JOB OPPORTUNITIES TDK-Lambda UK Limited, based by Bicclescombe Park in Ilfracombe, is the market leader in the design and manufacture of Electronic Power Supplies and forms part of the TDK Group of companies.

Due to an increase in production demands, we are looking for ASSEMBLY & WIRING OPERATORS to join our team. Contracts will be for an initial 6 month period with a view to extending further and ultimately leading to permanent employment.

We have several shift patterns available: Alternating shift pattern: Mon - Fri 06.00 - 14.00 and 14.00 - 22.00 (37.5 hrs/wk)* Standard day shift: Mon – Thurs 07.30 – 16.30 and Fri 07.30 - 12.00 (37.5 hrs/wk) Twilight shift: 17.00 – 22.00 either Mon – Thurs (20hrs/week) or Mon – Fri (25hrs/wk) The work is varied, of a light and clean nature where attention to detail and quality of workmanship are essential. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided.

Hourly rate of pay: Initial 24 weeks £9.77, thereafter £9.97 * Alternating shifts attract 25% shift premium – Initial 24 weeks £12.21, thereafter £12.46 We currently have plenty of overtime available at 1.5 x hourly rate and double time Sundays.

In return the company offers excellent conditions of employment, 25 days holiday + Bank Holidays per annum, company sick pay scheme, free life assurance and pension contributions above the statutory minimum (employee 3.25%, company 4.75%).

A word from the editor Greetings fellow coastdwellers and welcome to the June instalment of The Ilfracombe Magazine.

It’s official, we’re half way through 2022 and the summer is virtually upon us. One familiar sign that signals the tourist season is the sight of the Dotto Train and I’m genuinely delighted to see it running again this year. There was a period where a contractor simply couldn’t be found to operate this cheery little vehicle. I love seeing the Dotto doing the rounds of the town, so hats off to the team who made it happen this year.

As usual this month we bring you the very best in local tradespeople and businesses - all of whom we advocate you support in this tricky post-pandemic climate. We also bring you two significant news stories.

Ilfracombe has become the first location in Devon and Cornwall to employ a dedicated Maritime PCSO (which stands for Police Community Support Officer). The role has gone to Andy Bailey whose role will involve policing antisocial behaviour around the harbour area - not least people tombstoning into the water, an activity which seems fun but can have devastating effects. I’m really pleased

Ilfracombe has been chosen for this trial and look forward to seeing the positive results over the next 12 months. Sadly, we also bring you news of another matter involving the police.

The enormous fire at the Glen Tor Hotel can’t have escaped the notice of anyone in the town. The huge blaze took dozens of firefighters days to extinguish and, unfortunately, the fire has now been confirmed as

arson. Everyone knows Ilfracombe’s history with hotel and large building fires, many of which result in eyesore sites being left to rot for years (in some cases decades). I truly hope that doesn’t happen in this case and that we all, as a community, do everything we can to help police draw this matter to a swift conclusion.

8 fire service confirm hotel blaze was arson

A fire that destroyed Glen Tor Hotel in Ilfracombe has been confirmed as arson

by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue. Emergency service call handlers received more than 30 calls from locals who spotted smoke and flames billowing from the derelict property on Friday, April 22. Crews from 14 fire stations across North Devon, Mid Devon

and Exeter worked throughout the night to put out the blaze which was started deliberately. Devon and Cornwall Police has now launched an investigation to find those responsible for starting the fire, which destroyed the Victorian hotel in Torrs Park beyond repair. A spokesperson for the police said: “The fire is being treated as arson at

this time. It is believed to have been started between 2pm and 5pm on Friday 22 April.”

Police are appealing for witnesses and asking for anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious around the time of the fire to contact them via 101@dc.police. uk or by telephone on 101, quoting crime reference number CR/034573/22.

10 ilfracombe gets dedicated maritime pcso

A new Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) has started work in Ilfracombe with the specific remit of policing the town’s harbour.

PCSO Andy Bailey has been appointed to the new dedicated role as part of a 12-month pilot project, the first of its kind in Devon and Cornwall. The post has been jointly funded by North Devon Council, who own and operate Ilfracombe Harbour, and the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

During the summer season, when Ilfracombe’s popula-

tion swells, the harbour sees a rise in antisocial behaviour (ASB) including street drinking and people jumping into hazardous areas of the sea, known as tombstoning. The Maritime PCSO, who will be located at Ilfracombe Harbour Master’s Office, will work as part of the Neighbourhood Policing Team to provide an important, visible presence for the Harbour and to help prevent incidents of ASB. PCSO Bailey said: “I’ll be working with the Harbour Authority, the Harbour Master, Devon and Cornwall Police and hopefully in con-

junction with the community to make the harbour a safe place for both locals and visitors alike.” Ilfracombe Harbourmaster Georgina Carlo-Paat MBE, who is employed by North Devon Council, said: “PCSO Bailey has already been here for a few weeks and has been getting to know the local shop owners and members of the community. Having a visual policing presence of police authority here that has a direct link to the local police has never been done so we’re really looking forward to the benefits this will bring.”
