This month - as well as the beautiful weather we’ve been having - there’s another reason we at The Ilfracombe Magazine HQ are feeling bit excited. As you can read on P18, it seems plans for a ferry service between Ilfracombe and Wales could possibly be back on the cards. OK, admittedly they could still be a long way off and the latest news is a bit of a roundabout way of reintroducing them, but frankly any glimmer of hope on a subject as massive as this has to be greeted with a sense of optimism.

highlighting the problem of dog poo

Could highlighting dog mess be an effective deterrent in Ilfracombe? North Devon Council is using biodegradable spray paint to highlight the problem in Braunton, alongside leaflet drops, increased signage, high-profile patrols, CCTV and covert surveillance.

By painting around dog mess in an area known to locals as ‘Dog Poo Lane’, the council has already seen significant results.

Monitoring the frequency of fouling in the most recent seven-day period, the team found that having sprayed all existing mess, no new incidents were found, where previously it was as high as five or six a day.

Prevention and education continues in the Saunton Park area of Braunton and the council’s Neighbourhood Officers are working with local schools and community groups to tackle the problem. Similar work will be done on other problem locations, which have already been identified.

Neighbourhood Officer Alan Kyle says: “The results of our spraying are very encouraging. Seeing the paint reassures people that something is being done, puts those responsible on notice and helps monitor if our interventions are working. It’s not

all about catching people – our education work and raising awareness is just as important and it is the direct support of the public that makes the biggest difference.”

Dog fouling is the latest issue being addressed as part of the council’s Clear Messages campaign, which aims to raise awareness of environmental issues such as littering, fly-tipping and responsible dog ownership. Failure to clean up after your dog can result in a fixed penalty

notice of £80 with a maximum fine of £1000.

ferry plans could be back on the cards

A ferry service between Ilfracombe and Wales could still be on the cards after £25m plans for a regeneration and flood protection scheme in Ilfracombe have been discussed. The Environment Agency (EA) gave a presentation to the town’s harbour board last month at which flood prevention work was discussed. Simon Dart, a flood risk engineer with the Environment Agency, said the town is in need of updated flood defences as waves frequently “overtop” the existing defences, both at Cheyne Beach and at the harbour. He said: “We are planning to get some measures in place by 2021 which won’t cost a vast amount, around £500,000. Unfortunately we just can’t afford the ‘all singing, all dancing’ scheme which would reduce Ilfracombe from a high risk of flooding to a low risk. But we remembered that North

Devon Council had mentioned plans to regenerate the town’s harbour area and spoke to them about their vision – now it’s started to click.”

Mr Dart said although the EA would not take the lead on any regeneration scheme, they do want to “tag on” and be a part of it. He said: “An outer breakwater would reduce the size of waves at the inner and outer harbour. There would also possibly need to be something like a tidal gate installed. The figure of £25 million is the overall estimated regeneration cost from the Ilfracombe Harbour Board and we would all have to work in partnership to attain funding at this level – probably working with organisations such as the Local Enterprise Partnership, European Union and Coastal

Communities. Such plans could unlock potential development sites in the area too – it would be a very worthwhile project.”

Councillor Geoff Fowler, chairman of Ilfracombe Harbour Board, said the EA’s involvement was a “very positive step”. He said: “It is a real possibility and feels closer than ever before. Having said that, there is a lot of work and consultation to be done.

We have to work closely with North Devon Council and other bodies.”

Mr Fowler said a ferry service linking Ilfracombe to Wales was “still a possibility”. He said: “If the people behind these latest plans thought they might get help with some of the facilities they need, it could well act as a catalyst.”

Of course, by definition this usually means we’ve had a nice, sunny day, meaning many of us will have spnt the afternoon in one of the many fine beer gardens around the town - which obviously makes the whole experience just that little bit more euphoric. Speaking of weather, how lucky were we with the meteorological conditions for the Ilfracombe Art Trail last month - what an event! Not only was it great to see so much talent on display, but you get to look inside so many houses!

Fingers crossed that it lasts a while, and that we can look forward to a flaming June!

Certainly we have much to look forward to at Shammick Acoustic that month, starting with our usual 2nd Saturday Open Night on the 9th. Open Nights are about whoever comes along, with anyone and everyone having a chance to ‘sing, say or play’ whatever takes their fancy. If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome to come along, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen. It’s held in the ‘museum’ of the pub, so there’s no need to compete with bar noise. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.

And on Saturday 23rd June, we have the exceptional quartet of a capella singers, The Teacups, who have been a sensation wherever they have performed. Comprising the talents of four graduates of Newcastle’s Folk and Traditional Music degree course, this group has been singing up a storm across the UK

circuit during the past few years, with acclaimed performances at Shepley, Beverley, Warwick, Sidmouth, Whitby and many other top folk festivals, as well as in Europe.

One of their number, Alex Cumming, is no stranger to Shammick Acoustic having performed here with Nicola Beazley and with James Finlay. Now living in the US, he is a multi-talented performer and workshop leader in both countries. Kate Locksley, concentrates on songs and singing, whether it be with The Teacups, the all-female a capella trio Wychwood, or with the folk trio Night Fall.

Rosie Calvert is another multitalented person who teaches, composes, makes and plays

instruments as well as singing, and performs with female trio Speldosa and in a duo with the other member of The Teacups, Will Finn, who she describes as ‘awesome’.

As a whole, The Teacups provide “a proper feast of English folk songs sung with intelligence, heart, and soul.”

As to their group name, their website gives no clue as to its origin, so if you’re curious, you’ll have to come along and ask them in person, which in the intimate surroundings of this cosy venue, you’ll have an opportunity to do. Can’t wait!
