JOB OPPORTUNITIES TDK-Lambda UK Limited, based by Bicclescombe Park in Ilfracombe, is the market leader in the design and manufacture of Electronic Power Supplies and forms part of the TDK Group of companies. Due to an increase in production demands, we are looking for ASSEMBLY & WIRING OPERATORS to join our team. Contracts will be for an initial 6 month period with a view to extending further and ultimately leading to permanent employment. We have several shift patterns available: Alternating shift pattern: Mon - Fri 06.00 - 14.00 and 14.00 - 22.00 (37.5 hrs/wk)* Standard day shift: Mon – Thurs 07.30 – 16.30 and Fri 07.30 - 12.00 (37.5 hrs/wk) Twilight shift: 17.00 – 22.00 either Mon – Thurs (20hrs/week) or Mon – Fri (25hrs/wk) The work is varied, of a light and clean nature where attention to detail and quality of workmanship are essential. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided. Hourly rate of pay: Initial 24 weeks £9.77, thereafter £9.97 * Alternating shifts attract 25% shift premium – Initial 24 weeks £12.21, thereafter £12.46 We currently have plenty of overtime available at 1.5 x hourly rate and double time Sundays. A word from the editor
It’s official, summer is here! As I type this, the sun is beating down on our fair town and the smell of freshly barbecued sausages is floating on the air. We all know the tourist season comes with its ups and downs, but the highlight for me is ALWAYS the Ilfracombe Birdman Competition. Sure, I’m one of the people who organise the spectacle so I’m bound to say that - but I genuinely love everything about this day. As well as being the busiest day in Ilfracombe’s calendar, it also exudes that quirky, coastal charm our town does so well. It’s
also a jolly good excuse for us locals to get out, have a beer or two, laugh at the pilots hurling themselves into the sea and then rock out until the wee hours at the live music stage. I won’t go on too much about the day itself - which is taking place on Saturday, July 30 - as all the information you need is contained within the pages of this month’s magazine. I will say this though, it’s going to be the biggest and best Birdman yet! Of course this isn’t the only event to take place this month - far from it in fact. Saturday, July 16, sees the return of the Round Lundy Yacht

race, one of the greatest spectacles in the town’s calendar. Regardless of whether or not you are a seasoned yachtsperson, the sheer sight of that many billowed sails swooping gently over the surface of the sea is a pure joy (the best view is usually at the back of Capstone or at the top of Lantern Hill). Take a walk down the sea front and see for yourself - and while you’re down there, why not head to the Yacht Club for a bacon butty? Go on, treat yourself - it’s summer!

birdman is back - bigger and better!
It’s that time of year again - the time when brave (or foolhardy) pilots prepare to hurl themselves off Ilfracombe Pier at the Round Table Birdman event. This year’s spectacle - which takes place on Saturday, July 30 - is set to be a belter with a fantastic line-up on the music stage, lots of new attractions - including a climbing wall and axe throwing - as well as a food village and the usual wellstocked bar. This year’s music stage will be joint headlined by hip-hop act Lazy Habits, who travel all the way from London to be
here, and the incredible Andy Quick Band, hailing a little closer to home in Plymouth. There’s also local legend The Rasscals, upcoming stars Shake The Geek, Ilfracombe lads Odds & 8-Balls, solo artist James Spencer and - all the way from France - the fantastic vocal talents of Ellie Sanders. Organisers are also hoping to attract some genuine flying machines - with a grand prize of £5,000 up for grabs by anyone travelling the furthest over 50 metres. Joel Cooper, chairman of Ilfracombe Round Table who organise the event,
said: “I’ve been involved in organising Birdman for over 20 years now, but I’m particularly excited about this year’s event. Not only do we have a brilliant musical line-up, we also have some brand new attractions which I know people are going to love! 10 twinning brings out the best in the town
Ilfracombe’s new Mayor Daniel Turton says the kind of friendships created by the Ilfracombe and Ifs Twinning Associations are just what the world needs. “Technology may have brought the world closer over the past few years, but due to various global events our world has never felt so apart,” councillor Turton told a welcome reception at the Ilfracombe Centre for 24 guests from Ifs, near Caen in Normandy. “This is why events like this, and the work of the Twinning Association, are more important than ever, especially for the future and our children, as we look to rebuild links and promote harmony and friendship around the world.” As a young boy, Mayor Turton played a football match against a side
from Ifs during the very first Twinning exchange in 1991. “I believe we lost,” he said on Saturday. “But it was a great experience for all.” The importance of reaching out to different people was shared later in the day by Martine Kerguelen, the Ifs Twinning Chair, who pointed to events in Ukraine. “More than ever, and especially since 24 February, we need to hammer home the values of brotherhood between people,” she told an audience of fellow visitors and their Ilfracombe hosts at St Peter’s Church. “This is what Twinning is for: to see something of yourself in someone else, beyond the differences in our customs or traditions… to discover that a stranger, another person, is not so strange to us after all – that they look
like us, they share the same feelings and they have the same anxieties and hopes.” The French guests left Ilfracombe on Sunday on the fourth day of a visit that included an entertaining race night at the George & Dragon in Fore Street, a trip to South Molton’s Quince Honey Farm and a visit to Marwood Hill Gardens. “It’s been a wonderful few days together,” said Terrena Howse, Ilfracombe Twinning Chair. “After postponing their visit for the past two years because of Covid, it’s been great to meet up with our French friends again. round lundy yacht race set to return
The annual Round Lundy Yacht Race takes place this month on Saturday, July 16. At 8.30am, the starting cannon will sound to signal that the 15th annual Round Lundy Race, the highlight of the local yachting calendar, is underway. You can expect a flotilla of around 40 yachts taking part. Since the inaugural race in 2005, Ilfracombe’s Yacht Club’s annual Round Lundy Race has become one of the classic sailing events in the Bristol Channel. The winner receives the Trafalgar Cup in recognition of a little-known connection between Ilfracombe and that momentous sea battle off Cape Trafalgar. When
HMS Pickle sailed into Falmouth with the terrible news of Nelson’s death, it was an Ilfracombe lad, Lt Lapenotiere, who conveyed the news onwards by road to the Admiralty in London. The Round Lundy Race is not for the faint hearted. If all goes well a race duration of between 8-12 hours lies ahead. Starting on the morning ebb tide outside Ilfracombe Harbour, a good race is dependent on catching the tidal gate at Lundy. Miss it, and your race is effectively over. Catch it right, and the steep rugged cliffs of the granite island can be circumnavigated before you begin the homeward run back to Ilfracombe to capi-
talise on the evening flood tide. But it’s not a straightforward run for the finish line. Skippers and crews need to be prepared to face a variety of challenging conditions on this open water event with a sailing distance in excess of 55 miles. By late afternoon, you should be able to see a flotilla of brightly coloured spinnakers making eastwards using every zephyr of the prevailing south westerly wind to gain a slight but crucial advantage in the final race to the finish line. Ilfracombe Yacht Club will be open from 7.30 till 9.30am serving coffee and bacon rolls, with a superb view of the race from the poop deck.
