A word from the editor
Good day to you fellow Ilfracombe-ites and welcome to the July edition of your free monthly magazine. As I type, Boris has just announced that we will not be coming completely out of lockdown on June 21 as expected, but will in fact be hanging on for a further four weeks. I’m sure this is something many of us expected and, annoying though it is, I would urge everyone to abide to the few rules that are still in place to give us the best chance of unlocking on July 19. Moving on to more colourful matters now, namely the amazing photo which adorns the cover of this month’s magazine (and the window opposite - so good we thought we’d use it twice). We all know Ilfracombe is beautiful, but it’s even more spectacular from the air as this incredible drone image shows. It was taken by Jake Robert Carr who is clearly both an experienced drone pilot and talented photographer. The colour of the sea puts one in mind of a fashionable Mediterranean resort rather than a town on the north Devon coast. Just goes to show how lucky we are to live in this particular corner of the world! Speaking of which, another thing we are
very blessed to have in Ilfracombe is a number of fantastic pubs (I bet you barely noticed that little segway eh)! The reason I raise the subject of pubs is that the Euro 2020 football competition is now upon us, and the finals are scheduled to take place in July (whether or not England will be involved by that point is another matter). Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that given the rough time local boozers have had lately amidst the Covid pandemic,
if you’re going to watch the footy, why not get down to your local licensed establishment and enjoy it with the atmosphere it deserves - along with a pint or two (and a bag of nuts if you’re feeling adventurous)? I know I bang on about supporting local at any opportunity, but every pound spent in the town’s economy makes a positive impact to local lives.

8 ilfracombe to star in new tv crime series Pics: Allan Collins
You may have noticed an array of cameras, lights and TV personalities around town in the past few weeks - and that’s because Ilfracombe will be making its television drama debut. ITV film crews have been joined by actors including Juliet Stevenson, Martin Shaw, Anita Dobson and Neil Morrissey shooting a new crime series called The Long Call, a large amount of which takes place in Ilfracombe. The lead role of DI Matthew Venn will be played by Ben Aldridge. The gripping four-part drama is inspired by the best-selling novel of the same title from award-
winning writer Ann Cleeves, creator of the iconic Vera and Shetland series. The writer, who grew up in North Devon, said: “I can’t think of anyone who could play Matthew Venn better than Ben Aldridge. He will bring an authenticity and commitment to the role. I always hoped that the actor chosen would come from Devon, where the books are set, and he does. Ben was the actor who read the audio book even before the TV show was commissioned. I love his pared-back, restrained narration. He’s worked on the novel as well as the script, and so he
understands the character in depth. No author could wish for more.” The character-led, atmospheric crime drama is driven by the intriguing and flawed protagonist, Detective Inspector Matthew Venn, who has returned to live in a small community in North Devon with his husband, Jonathan. It’s a place Matthew walked away from 20 years ago, after being rejected by his family. The series is being made by Silverprint Pictures and produced in association with ITV Studios, who are handling international distribution. No release date has yet been revealed.

10 harbour gets european funded security upgrade
Ilfracombe harbour has recently benefited from an upgraded CCTV system after receiving a grant from the European Maritime Fisheries Fund in January of this year. Seventeen new cameras were installed around Ilfracombe in April by Ad Hoc Ltd. Fifteen cover the main harbour with one overlooking Cheyne Beach to monitor the flood defenses only, paid for by the Environmental Agency and another covering Benricks skate park. All cameras have been carefully set so they don’t overlook private
property. Plans for two more to cover the Larkstone Cove are in place, ready for the estimated completion of the Watersports Centre in March 2022. Ilfracombe Harbour Master, Georgina Carlo-Patt says: “With these new high tech night vision cameras in place, it has given Ilfracombe Harbour much needed security coverage. I hope harbour users and our other valued visitors will enjoy the feel of security when visiting, or taking part in law abiding activities.” The funding has also allowed for a tannoy
system to be installed which has enabled the operator to give safety messages to specific areas or to the whole harbour.

The view with COMBEBIRD
All of Combebird’s pictures are great, but I specifically chose this one because it points out something I also noticed recently. I love the expansive, green area next to the swimming pool at the foot of Hillsborough, but I love it even more now. Someone, I’m guessing North Devon Council, has decided that rather than mowing the entire area so it resembles a neatly shorn golf course (which, I believe, it once was) it has instead been allowed to grow. The result, aside from the helpfully mown pathways, is a glorious mix of swaying long grass and wild flowers which will undoubtedly be doing wonders for local wildlife. A simple act that makes this already idyllic pasture even more special!

32 local man to swim 24 miles for charity close to heart
An Ilfracombe man is set to swim 24 miles across the Bristol Channel in aid of a cause very close to his heart. Neil Gilson will be attempting to swim from Swansea to Hele Bay in Ilfracombe in aid of PANS PANDAS UK on July 17, 2021. Neil’s son Jack, who is now 5, suffers from PANDAS which is a neuropsychiatric condition triggered by a misdirected immune response to a Streptococcal infection. It results in the inflammation of a child’s brain. Neil is undertaking this challenge in order to raise awareness of the condition, which is
not recognised by the NHS. Neil has made it his mission to raise awareness of the condition and raise funds for the charity to help other children and their families who are desperately suffering and don’t know what to do. Two years ago, Neil and his family had not heard of the condition, but Jack was unable to leave the house. Luckily a brave family who had a child suffering with similar symptoms to Jack shared their story on a TV show. The symptoms they described were identical to those that Jack had - after years of suffering for their family it was an amazing
