A word from the editor
Happy New Year one and all and welcome to this, the first edition of The Ilfracombe Magazine of 2021. Let’s be honest, 2020 was not the year any of us hoped for and will certainly not be remembered fondly by the vast majority. It’s hard to imagine that this time last year we had sung in the new year, were just two weeks into Boris Johnson’s newly elected Government and something called coronavirus was causing a bit of bother in the far east. If only we knew then what we know now! The roll-out of the newly developed vaccines is music to the ears of most, though is likely to take time and it’s fair to say we have some way to go before a return to complete normality. That said, I for one am hopeful that 2021 will be a good year. Having collectively been through everything that 2020 threw at us, I hope we will see this year as an opportunity. Not just to see our friends and family down the pub and be able to put our arms around them once again (although that will feel amazing), but to learn from our shared experiences and use those tough lessons as inspiration to flourish as both individuals and as a community.
Go and see that long-lost cousin in Australia like you always said you would, enter that triathlon, join a band, make music, get that tattoo you wanted, swim in the sea at sunrise without a wetsuit, buy flowers for someone who isn’t expecting it - live life (though obviously when it is safe to do so, that goes without saying). And one thing I would urge you all to do now more than ever before is shop
local. Independent businesses have never needed our support so much. If day-to-day normality is still a little way off, then economic normality - especially for somewhere like North Devon - is just a tiny dot at the end of a very, very long tunnel. Buying what you can from small, local shops is more important than ever.

10 drive-in cinema raises ÂŁ15,000 for charity
A drive-in cinema that was the brainchild of a local charity has raised thousands of pounds for local worthy causes. Ilfracombe Round Table came up with the idea for car-based film screenings after their flagship event, Birdman, was unable to take place in 2020 due to the pandemic. The idea proved so successful that after dozens of screenings at venues across North Devon, Ilfracombe Round Table has raised more than ÂŁ15,000 for charity. As well as an initial series of films at Ilfracombe Rugby Club, the group of volunteers hosted themed events for Halloween at the spooky Seafield House in Westward Ho! as
well as festive Christmas screenings at Portmore Golf Club in Barnstaple. On top of this, the charity also offers its equipment and expertise on a hire basis to other groups across the UK, with all proceeds going to worthy causes in and around Ilfracombe. While the group has already donated some of the funds, the group is always looking

12 unleash your artistic side in 2021
The Arts Society is an international charity whose main objective is education and conservation in all the arts. Each Society provides an annual programme of stimulating monthly lectures by the best and most inspirational Art Lecturers from museums, galleries, universities and the media. Study Days are regularly arranged to thoroughly investigate a subject with a noted expert. Five-day Arts courses are run annually in five centres around the South West including Exeter. Members are encouraged to take part in various volunteering activities which include Church and Heritage recordings, the setting up of local Trails of Discovery for both adults and children together with the support of Young Arts country wide. The Arts Society North Devon, is a friendly group, we meet at the Durrant House Hotel,
Heywood Road, Northam, EX39 3BQ for our regular meetings throughout the season, which runs from October to May each year on the second Tuesday of each month at 2pm. At present due to the Covid restrictions the lectures are presented using Zoom at the usual time of 2pm.
Visitors are always welcome, however after three visits full membership would be expected. Donations of ÂŁ5 will be requested. The Society has given support for many years to the Annual Young Arts Exhibition which takes place at the Burton Art Gallery during the spring.

Cat of the month! Dude This is Dude, a middle aged gentleman who likes the finer qualities in life - good food, a warm lap and a clean litterbox. Dude is a friendly cat who generally seems to prefer the company of men, although as always with cats you never know how they're going to react to any particular individual. He is 10 years old, and having led a mainly indoor life has no road sense so would need a particularly safe space for his outdoor explorations. As I mentioned in my editor’s comment, I’m really hoping January is going to mark the start of a transitional year for everyone here in Ilfracombe. And nothing reminds us more of the earth’s natural transition than the cold winter months. While some understandably find this dark, wet and quiet time of year somewhat melancholy - and there’s no denying this winter will be one of the loneliest we’ve ever had to endure - for those looking, there is always beauty to be found, just like these frosty leaves in all their icy glory. I’m not saying it’s going to be easy, but if you try to focus on those positive little gems wherever you might find them, it may raise a much-needed smile.

what is reflexology and who can benefit? 21 By Sheila Shepherd Reflexology is a unique system of foot massage using techniques such as thumb walking and hooking. By locating and massaging the precise reflex points on the feet, the reflex points correspond to the different pieces of the body. The technique is thereby treating all the parts of a person as a whole, mentally, emotionally and physically. The bodies natural healing abilities may be stimulated to help restore balance, aiding the body to work as well as it possibly can. Everyone can benefit from reflexology. It is both a safe and relaxing treatment. Reflexology has been attributed in helping many common ailments including digestive problems, such as IBS, headaches, sleep problems, anxiety, stress, balancing hormones, fertility, pregnancy and the menopause. Sessions need to be adapted for children and elderly; For example having shorter treatments and taking care over some ailments. The elderly will find that stiff joints and circulatory problems, in particular, will benefit from reflexology sessions, while babies and children are the most receptive as their body’s are easily relaxed to therapeutic stimuli and results are good. I’ve been practising as a fully qualified Holistic Therapist for over 22 years, gaining a IIHHT diploma in 1998. It was a full time course covering Reflexology Aromatherapy, Aromatherapy Massage, Swedish Massage, Indian Head Massage, Anatomy and Physiology, Counselling, Diet and Nutrition and First Aid. I live locally in Ilfracombe, where I practise in a comfortable treatment room at home, I also work in private clinics and have a mobile couch where I provide home clinics and visits to holiday homes, B&Bs, hotels retreats and campsites providing relaxation and pampering treatments for guests and visitors.
