December is always a manic month, but this one just gone has been even more hectic than usual. It’s enough that the Christmas chaos and New Year’s nerves invade, but this December we had the added pressure of a general election to contend with - which pretty much took over the entire first half of the month. pier entrance and kiosk plans submitted
Two planning applications have been registered for exciting improvements to Ilfracombe Quay and Victoria Pleasure grounds. North Devon Council has made the applications which if approved will run side-by-side providing the opportunity to make the quay more welcoming and safer for visitors, as well as regenerate the Victoria Pleasure Grounds. The plans for Ilfracombe Quay include removing the existing 1950’s tollbooths/ticket kiosks which are in poor condition and open up the quay entrance. As part of this the entrance to the quay will be widened, a new designated pedestrian crossing installed for added safety at the entrance and an archway on the pier installed featuring the historic clock from the quay. Following these works the second application would see the Festival of Britain style Fins
from the toll booths, which are included in The Local Interest List for Ilfracombe, relocated to the Victoria Pleasure Grounds and used as a design feature for two new multi-purpose kiosks. As part of the application the area would be opened up providing a new seating area for the kiosks plus a seating area for the bus stop. The new installation will frame views of the sight lines from the St Philip and St James Church and Landmark Theatre. Head of Resources at North Devon Council, Jon Triggs, says: “The registration of these two planning applications is an exciting point in this project for Ilfracombe. We’ve listened to feedback from Historic England and local residents and believe that the new applications provide an opportunity to really help with the regeneration of the town whilst retaining as many of the
original features as possible. We’re going to be very busy as we are planning to complete all the works at the quay before the 2020 holiday season. Following this we can then move on to the works for the Victoria Pleasure Grounds. Ilfracombe Harbour Master, Georgina Carlo-Paat, says: “Ilfracombe Harbour is a fascinating place to visit for holiday makers and our local residents. I really think these works will make the area more accessible and encourage more people to enjoy what the town has to offer.”

18 meet North Devon’s new mp selaine saxby You can’t have escaped the fact that, unusually for December, we have had a general election. Given that all the candidates standing were complete newcomers to the North Devon political scene, we were always going to get a brand new MP. But we’ve also got North Devon’s very first female MP too. Meet Selaine Saxby, the new Conservative MP for North Devon who romped to victory over her competitors at the polls on December 12. But who is Selaine? And what is she going to do for us when she gets to Westminster? Well, Selaine lives in Instow and before being elected MP she was also the local member for North Devon District Council. She has run her own business, been chief of staff to Ben Howlett MP in Bath and most recently trained to become a teacher at Bideford College.
Speaking on the North Devon Conservatives website, Selaine said: “I have a wealth of fund raising experience having raised over £500K for breast cancer charities through a series of charity aerobathons I founded and ran called Pink Aerobics. I come from a family of teachers and am passionate about access to education and ensuring all children receive an excellent one. Sometimes you’ve got to look at things from a different angle - particularly in that funny stretch of time after all the fun and excesses of the Christmas and New Year period. They say the third Monday in January is officially the most depressing day of the year - and that stuck with me when I first heard about it. But, determined to fight against it, I decided to do something special on that day (this year I’m taking myself off to the Austrian alps for some snowboarding and well-deserved relaxtion - and I can’t wait)! His influences include ancient folk blues records, to English traditional music and song from the likes of Bob Copper and Shirley Collins to various immigrant cultures, so who knows what we can expect on the night?
