Michelin-starred chef plans to open his second Restaurant in ilfracombe

Ilfracombe’s very own Michelin-starred chef is hoping to open his second restaurant in the town - and this time he’s teaming up with his world record-breaking brother.

Thomas Carr, who earned Ilfracombe’s first Michelin star in 2016 at The Olive Room, hopes to open his second restaurant in 2018.

The venture sees Thomas partner up with his older brother Kevin Carr, who holds the world record for the fastest round-the-world run which he achieved in 2015, having run 16,300 miles through 26 countries.

The local brothers are also joined by friend and local marketing man Richard Evans for the venture, which would see the trio take over the The Lamb Hotel on Ilfracombe High Street to create the Thomas Carr Seafood and Grill.

The Lamb Hotel has been empty for some time and caught Thomas’ eye as he walked past it. He said: “ Ilfracombe has a

The Lamb hotel on the high st wonderful selection of great, small restaurants but lacks a bigger, casual dining venue where you can meet with friends for a quick bite and drink, or have an affordable, great quality three-course meal for less than £30. That’s what we want to achieve with the Seafood and Grill.”

Thomas, who trained under renowned chef Nathan Outlaw in Cornwall, says he is keen for the restaurant to help Ilfracombe’s thriving community. He said: “Ilfracombe has had its moments in the past, and still struggles to shift a negative reputation in some people’s eyes. But as a resident, business owner and father I can honestly say it’s one of the best places in North Devon.

“We want to give as much back as we can, so we’ll be looking for two local causes to support from the very outset - and offering anything we can to help.” Thomas, Kevin and Richard launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter in the hope of raising £15,000 to get the project off the ground.

They smashed this target with weeks to go and at the time of going to print had raised a whopping £17,600. Speaking on his Kickstarter page Thomas said: “Wow, we only went and did it! We’ve achieved the target we initially set to make this happen, so it’s happening! Now everybody give yourselves a big pat on the back.”

If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome to come along, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.

The concert on 24th February stars another of our previously Open Night featured artists, Derek Gifford, and it’s a delight to welcome this mellow-voiced singer for a full concert. Former teacher Derek has made the most of his retirement to spend more time fulfilling his main interests in life, folk singing, wine appreciation and birding (of the feathered variety, I hasten to add!), which used to be confined to school vacations, starting way back in 1981.

Over the years, he has amassed an enormous number of songs, both traditional and modern, from a wide variety of sources.

DEREK GIFFORD He collaborated with Bury poet Keith Scowcroft, setting many of his poems to music, and also became known as a specialist in maritime songs, having appeared at the local Lancaster Maritime Festival for many years, then backed this up by working with singers Keith Kendrick and Geoff Higginbottom as Three Sheets to the Wind. Derek also has numerous recordings to his name, most recently ‘Songs from the Past…Into the Future’ on the WildGoose label (on which can also be heard voices from Shammick in the persons of Tom & Barbara Brown). Accompanying

himself on guitar or bowed psaltery or just singing unaccompanied, a relaxed, laidback and humorous evening can be anticipated, with loads of good choruses with which to sing along. A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience.
