JOB OPPORTUNITIES TDK-Lambda UK Limited, based by Bicclescombe Park in Ilfracombe, is the market leader in the design and manufacture of Electronic Power Supplies and forms part of the TDK Group of companies. Due to an increase in production demands, we are looking for ASSEMBLY & WIRING OPERATORS to join our team. Contracts will be for an initial 6 month period with a view to extending further and ultimately leading to permanent employment. We have several shift patterns available: Alternating shift pattern: Mon - Fri 06.00 - 14.00 and 14.00 - 22.00 (37.5 hrs/wk)* Standard day shift: Mon – Thurs 07.30 – 16.30 and Fri 07.30 - 12.00 (37.5 hrs/wk) Twilight shift: 17.00 – 22.00 either Mon – Thurs (20hrs/week) or Mon – Fri (25hrs/wk) The work is varied, of a light and clean nature where attention to detail and quality of workmanship are essential. No experience is necessary as full training will be provided. Hourly rate of pay: Initial 24 weeks £9.22, thereafter £9.40 * Alternating shifts attract 25% shift premium – Initial 24 weeks £11.52, thereafter £11.76 We currently have plenty of overtime available at 1.5 x hourly rate and double time Sundays. In return the company offers excellent conditions of employment, 25 days holiday + Bank Holidays per annum, company sick pay scheme, free life assurance and pension contributions above the statutory minimum (employee 3.25%, company 4.75%). A word from the editor Well, here we are - December! The tail end of 2021. Undoubtedly better for most than 2020, but probably not up there among the best of our lives! Regardless, time marches on and things seem to be getting more optimistic in terms of the whole Covid situation, which is good news! I’m delighted to welcome back our fantastic competition to win a roast dinner at the wonderful Lakeside Restaurant at Hidden Valley Holiday Park. We were overwhelmed by the number of entries we received for our inaugural competition last month - and you can find out who the lucky winner was by simply turning over the page. I’m also really happy to feature two great local clubs this month - the Ilfracombe and North Devon Sub Aqua Club and the Ilfracombe Men’s Shed. Small communities like ours thrive on the enthusiasm of groups like this and make our town a better place to be. Given that we’re surrounded by the sea, I often find it remarkable how many people - myself included - never really do much with it, other than look and admire it. Not that there’s anything wrong with that of course, but the beauty of the ocean is far
deeper than the surface most of us see - and that’s what the Sub Aqua club love doing. Whether its local waters, further afield or boat trips to Lundy, their busy underwater schedule is open to all - so check out more about them on page 8. Alternatively, if you’re the kind of person who has hidden DIY or gardening skills and a bit of spare time, then Ilfracombe Men’s Shed could be right up your

street. The group of guys meet at a dedicated space tucked down an alley near the Chocolate Emporium where they let their creative and manual skills flourish with all manner of useful community projects. 8 sub Aqua club celebrates its 60th birthday
Whilst Ilfracombe and North Devon Sub Aqua club celebrated it’s 60th anniversary in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic meant that members could only get together and celebrate in style this November. Old members and new came together to commemorate the club’s big birthday and to remember founder members and friends. Club president, Brian Watts, has been associated with the club since its inception and only gave up diving in the last couple of years. Current club members benefit from
the fundraising and pioneer spirit of former members. Club assets include a clubhouse on Ropery Road complete with compressors and a training facility, and two boats – Neptune which sits on a mooring in Ilfracombe harbour and Combe Diver, a RIB which is used for local diving and trips away. ILFSAC is part of the British Sub Aqua Club and was formed when BSAC had only being going for four years. It is one of the oldest BSAC dive clubs in the country, has been consistently active all those
years and remains a vibrant SCUBA diving club for members in Ilfracombe and beyond. The North Devon coast boasts world beating diving with historic shipwrecks, reefs and wildlife. 10 love diy? why not become a ‘shedder’?
If you ever wondered what the mysterious ‘Men’s Shed’ sign pointing down the alleyway behind the Ilfracombe Chocolate Emporium was indicating then follow the arrows and you might find you become a “Shedder”! The Ilfracombe Men’s Shed meets every Wednesday from 10am to 1pm and would welcome anyone interested in joining. The Shed was launched in December 2019 with support from One Ilfracombe, funding from the Ilfracombe Lions and space generously donated by the Chocolate Emporium. The workshop is fully equipped (includ-
ing all PPE) and the space includes a quiet breakout room, a kitchen and a toilet. The remit of the Shed is to create a place for men to get together in a fun, social atmosphere and share DIY making and repairing skills for the benefit of local community projects. It’s equally welcoming for just a chat over coffee or tea. As well as operating in the workshop, members have also been involved in outside projects at the Ilfracombe Junior School, the Straw Patch project and have other such projects in the pipeline. The Shed is managed by a number of “sen-

20 bicclescombe park scoops record award status
In a record-breaking year for the Green Flag Award, Bicclescombe Park in Ilfracombe and is celebrating award success again this year. The news that Ilfracombe’s green space has achieved the Green Flag Award is testament to the
hard work and dedication of those who look after them. 2021 is the 17th consecutive year that Bicclescombe Park - owned and managed by North Devon Council with help from the Bicclescombe Park User Group - has achieved Green Flag status. The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for
the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world. Ward member for Ilfracombe West, Councillor Geoffrey Fowler, says: “In yet another difficult year where outside space has been a haven for a lot of people, Bicclescombe has come up trumps once again. The limited staff, all credit to them, have maintained the park in extremely good condition under the circumstances, as several of our late influx of visitors have testified. Well done to all concerned.”

Cat of the month! Rosie Barnstaple Meet 10 year old Rosie, a real good looker who knows it! A much loved pet since kittenhood she has found herself homeless as her original owners new home is not suitable for her. Although generally friendly she is a bit of a diva with 'catitude' - a grown up cat who knows her likes and dislikes. She will come to greet you with friendly body language, enjoy a little stroke and sit next to you while she grooms her silky coat into tip top condition. She doesn't like too much fussing though and will let you know when she's had enough. Rosie does get worried by things surprising or unfamiliar, so would be happiest in a quiet home with no other pets or children. She loves the great outdoors, so free access to this would be essential. She would benefit from living with an experienced cat owner who can take the time to understand her nature, and give her the time and space she needs to gain confidence and trust in her new environment.
