A WORD FROM THE EDITOR...

Hello, and welcome to the August edition.

It’s ironic that in the same month as one of Ilfracombe’s favourite events - Birdman - that we are also carrying a warning to people about jumping off the town’s harbour walls (see P10).

However, the difference is clear - one is a highly regulated and safeguarded charitable spectacle, the other is dangerous thrill-seeking. I know there is a sentiment out there that pier-jumping is part of the town’s heritage, but it’s also very risky - so if you feel you have to jump why not sign up to Birdman and do it safely.

Pier jumpers warned they are breaking the law

Serious concerns are being raised about people ‘tombstoning’ in Ilfracombe Harbour.

A number of people have been jumping into the water off the harbour walls which is extremely dangerous. Not only do they not know where the shallow areas are, but there are boats coming and out of the harbour all the time.

Advice from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency states why tombstoning is dangerous: * water depth alters with the tide; the water may be shallower than it seems * submerged objects like rocks may not be visible; they can cause serious injury if you jump onto them *the shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim * strong currents can rapidly sweep people away

A tombstoner leaping into the sea from a great height Ilfracombe Harbourmaster Rob Lawson says: “With the recent warm weather, we have noticed more and more people jumping into the water.

This is not only very dangerous but also against the law.

A local byelaw exists because Ilfracombe Harbour is a busy place with many boat and ship movements a day. Those that are risking their lives with

sometimes little or no knowledge of the water depth or vessels movements are being foolhardy and we need to stop them before somebody gets hurt. Along with the police and with CCTV evidence we will be monitoring this behaviour and prosecuting offenders where appropriate.”

junior rangers learn about wildlife & environment

The latest group of school children from Ilfracombe Junior School have made the grade as ‘Junior Park Rangers’, in what is the scheme’s twelfth year.

More than 110 children from Year Four were presented with their certificates for completing the four-week course, based at Bicclescombe Park.

The course, organised by North Devon Council’s Parks team, raises awareness about the importance of parks and how we can help look after them.

As well as learning practical skills, such as pond dipping and bird watching, the children are taught about wildlife, biodiversity and the natural environment.

junior park rangers assemble at Bicclescombe park Leisure and Culture, Councillor Dick Jones, says: “It’s great to see so many young and enthusiastic new park rangers, who I hope will carry the experience and knowledge they have gained during this course, with them into the future.

“The scheme is just as popular today as it was 12 years ago and it’s clear the children really enjoy themselves.

“Our parks are so important for local wildlife and the health and well-being of those who use them, so it’s reassuring to know that we have another group of young park rangers who will be keeping a close eye on them.”

Local ward member, Councillor Geoff Fowler, says: “I have been privileged to attend many of these presentations in the past and it never fails to impress me how many of our youngsters want to get in-

volved in the natural environment of the park. It certainly bodes well for the future and I feel assured the park is in safe hands for the next generation.”

Joe Alcock from Ilfracombe Junior School, says: “The Junior Park Rangers course is a great way of educating the children about the importance of looking after the park grounds. It’s also a nice opportunity for the children to explore different parts of the park and find out how they can use them properly.”
