the 16th annual round lundy yacht race
On Sunday 24th May at 7am, if you find yourself on Ilfracombe pier or Capstone Parade, you will be greeted by the sight of a flotilla of some 40 yachts of all classes lining up on a start line stretching some 600 metres. At 7.30am, the starting cannon will sound to signal that the 16th annual Round Lundy Race, the highlight of the local yachting calendar, is underway. Since the inaugural race in 2005, Ilfracombe’s Yacht Club’s annual Round Lundy Race has become one of the classic sailing events in the Bristol Channel. The winner receives the Trafalgar Cup in recognition of a little-known connection between Ilfracombe and that momentous sea battle off Cape Trafalgar. When HMS Pickle sailed into Falmouth with the terrible news of Nelson’s death, it was an Ilfracombe lad, Lt Lapenotiere, who conveyed the news onwards by road to the Admiralty in London. The Round Lundy Race is not for the faint hearted. If all goes well a race duration of between 8 and 12 hours lies ahead. Starting on the morning ebb tide outside Ilfracombe Harbour, a good race is dependent on catching the tidal gate at Lundy. Miss it, and your race is
effectively over. Catch it right, and the steep rugged cliffs of the granite island can be circumnavigated before you begin the homeward run back to Ilfracombe to capitalise on the evening flood tide. But it’s not a straightforward run for the finish line. Skippers and crews need to be prepared to face a va-riety of challenging conditions on this open water event with a sailing distance in excess of 55 miles. Navigation needs to be given careful consideration. The Stanley Bank, a couple of miles north of Lundy, whips up The White Horses race. Then the West Bank, the Hens and Chicken reef and Black Rock all need to be negotiated. Heavy tidal overfalls and
eddies, the ever-present Atlantic swell and numerous fishing markers all need to be navigated. And then there is the wind direction and strength to consider. Indeed, it is the rough sea conditions around the island which give rise to the local nickname of ‘Lumpy Island’. By late afternoon, you should be able to a flotilla of brightly coloured spinnakers making eastwards using every zephyr of the prevailing south westerly wind to gain a slight but crucial advantage in the final race to the finish line. Ilfracombe Yacht Club will be open from 7.30am till 9.30am serving coffee and bacon rolls, along with a superb view of the race from the poop deck. Everyone is welcome.

Local landlord fined for flytipping
An Ilfracombe landlord has been issued with a fine by North Devon Council for a flytipping offence. This is the latest incident in the Council’s clamp down on flytipping in the district, as council officers send a clear message to the public that dumping waste illegally will result in a hefty financial penalty.In early February, the man illegally dumped domestic waste from the House in Multiple Occupation (HMO), of which he is the landlord. A resident, who spotted the man in the act, took his vehicle details and later reported it to the council. The council’s environmental health officers used the vehicle details to locate the man, who does not live in the area. When questioned by council of-
ficers, the man admitted the offence. As a result he was issued with a £400 fixed penalty notice (FPN) for flytipping. As part of its Clear Messages campaign, the council’s Environmental Protection team wants to remind everyone of the responsibility we all have in keeping North Devon clean. This includes challenging and reporting those we see littering; acting as a positive role model to our children, friends and relatives; reducing the amount we throw away and playing a part in clearing up and keeping our public spaces free from litter. Ray Jones, an Environmental and Dog Warden for the Council says: “We sincerely hope this latest incident will send a clear message that flytipping will
not be tolerated in North Devon. On this occasion, the culprit was detected quickly when a watchful resident wrote down his vehicle details. We have the ability to check vehicle registration numbers almost immediately and when we receive good evidence such as this we will respond quickly. We are grateful to the member of public who contacted us when they witnessed this incident, and would encourage others to do the same if they see flytipping or littering in action. Help us tackle environmental offences; follow our Clear Messages campaign on Facebook and Twitter, and call out anyone you suspect of littering, flytipping or see failing to pick up their dog’s mess.”

Let’s be honest, at the moment the national coronavirus issue means we don’t know what is happening from one day to the next, let alone in a month or so’s time. But, all being well, the annual Ilfracombe Art Trail is set to take place on the May 9/10 (at least that was the case at the time we went to print). This is by far one of my favourite events in the town - not only does it offer us the chance to see some incredible art created by some very talented local folks, but it also gives us an opportunity to explore areas of the town we perhaps didn’t know existed - and some spectacular houses too. Finger’s firmly crossed for the 2020 event in which, of course, Combebird will be participating.
