A word from the editor

I want to start this month’s note from the editor by acknowledging the premature and unexpected passing of a local legend and friend of mine, Nigel Pugsley. ‘Pugo’ was well-loved across the town, particularly at the football and rugby clubs.

I was lucky enough to see first-hand how much time and effort he put in at Brimlands, in order to put back into the club where enjoyed a distinguished playing career. He always enjoyed a beer and a story, was generous to a fault, and will be missed by many.

Nigel would have especially enjoyed this time of year, as both local football and rugby would normally be getting back into full swing.

While football has been allowed to make a tentative return at grassroots, rugby is still on hiatus for safety reasons, and with the threat of more restrictions as virus cases balloon nationally, we cannot rule out a re-shutting down of many community activities including sport. Ilfracombe coped incredibly well when this virus first presented itself.

Cases were extremely low thanks to locals doing the right thing on large, while the community also rallied around in an unprecedented way (remember how

our Community Volunteer Scheme was lauded and rolled out across the country). Now that life has opened up again and we have had the economic necessity of welcoming thousands of tourists into the town, that glimpse of normality has been tantalisingly dangled in front of us.

It’s made some greedy and careless, wanting to take a mile when an inch has been offered. That’s not to say I don’t have sympathy, especially when the current guidance would be as thick as a phone book (and constantly changing). However, if we are to keep the liberties we have so enjoyed getting back, such as a pint

at the pub or watching a local sports match, some more patience and restraint is needed. Let’s walk before we try to run, especially as the nights draw in and the conditions in which flu-like viruses thrive become more prevalent. Let’s just back to the mindset of those heady (albeit unnerving) days in March when not only did Ilfracombe show tremendous amounts of common sense to avoid being badly hit, but when our community spirit really took centre stage. If we can continue of think of others instead of just ourselves, life will return to normal far quicker, and we will be the stronger for it.

TYRELL HOSPITAL TO REOPEN FOR WINTER

There’s good news for Ilfracombe’s Tyrell Hospital this month. The community hospital and minor injury unit, which was closed due to the coronavirus pandemic, is due to reopen for the winter. The assurance was given to county councillors by a senior NHS manager.

It followed a question from Cllr Paul Crabb at a meeting of Devon’s health scrutiny committee on Thursday. Mr Crabb, the Conservative county councillor for Ilfracombe, asked John Finn of Devon NHS about the future of the Tyrell Hospital, as well as the Minor Injury Unit at Bideford. Both units were closed in March due to the

pandemic and staff were redeployed to the emergency department and North Devon District Hospital in Barnstaple. The hospital trust said in August the decision was being kept under constant review, sparking concerns it may prompt the closure of the hospital. Cllr Crabb questioned whether the ongoing closures were part of a strategy to change services and move away from using Minor Injury Units. But Mr Finn replied that the two units would be “up and running” for the winter. Cllr Crabb said he was relieved to hear the news. He said earlier that the local hospital trust had reported it was unable to

staff the MIUs because of the pandemic. Mr Finn told the committee: “There is a plan to reopen those two MIUs. I can absolutely give you an assurance that they will be up and running for the winter period.”

new support for carers in ilfracombe

A new support service has launched in Ilfracombe for carers wanting to take a well-earned break. Caring for a loved one is a very demanding role both physically and emotionally.

That’s why One Ilfracombe has teamed up with Devon Carers to provide a helping hand. The service offers trained volunteers who can help by providing carers with some much needed time out. Whether it’s meeting friends for coffee, relaxing with a good book or pottering around in your garden, the service offers

The view with COMBEBIRD

Before we all lose our minds and start worrying about social distancing and the “rule of six”, this is an old picture - a throwback, if you will. It depicts swimmers taking part in the Ilfracombe Triathlon back in, I believe, 2017. As I write this, coronavirus cases are starting to creep back up across the country with several local lockdowns announced in the north of England. The reason I chose to share this picture this month - as well as it being a fantastically moody image - is to remind us that, no matter how hard things seem at the moment, it will get better and we will eventually be able to live our lives again. Who knows, perhaps once it is all over, you might even be tempted to sign up for the triathlon!

Cat of the month!

Socks Although once an outdoor cat, for the past twelve months Socks has lived in just one room. Despite being much loved she found this enviroment very stressful at times, so we now need to find her a quiet home without any other pets or young children and where she can once again enjoy the great outdoors when she feels the need.

Once she gets to know you Socks is a very sweet friendly gentle little puss who loves a cuddle and a play. If things get a bit scary however she is great at finding something to hide under!

She has had some hair loss probably due to long term stress and a bad flea infestation but is now in the process of regrowing lovely sleek new fur.
