A word from the editor
Hello and welcome to the November edition of The Ilfracombe Magazine. At the time of writing this column, Covid is spreading and multiplying across many parts of the country, specifically in the North of England. There’s no doubt that this is the ‘second wave’ we’ve all been talking about and who honestly knows whether there will be a third or even fourth wave. So much is unknown and unpredictable at the moment – but I was buoyed this month at the return of two things that are delightfully predictable and wonderfully British! Call me sad, but this time of year just isn’t the same without The Great British Bake Off and Strictly Come Dancing. Nothing can bring a smile to the face of even the most cynical viewer like the soggy bottoms and outrageous sequined outfits on display on these national telly gems. Combine that with the witty comments of Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas, and the withering put downs of Craig Revel Horwood, and you’ve got the perfect recipe to put a smile on the face of a nation which – let’s be honest – is feeling pretty worn down at the moment. As it stands, Ilfracombe and North Devon haven’t been hit
anywhere near as bad as other parts of the country, and long may that continue. I like to think that the strong community spirit we have here in the town is leading everyone to play their part and stop the spread of the virus. We are blessed with many wonderful people who go above and beyond in times of emergency like this – but there’s one particular group I’d like to mention who seem to me to have been a little overlooked. Anyone who attempted any sort of home schooling with their children during lockdown will doubtless have a new found respect for
teachers. It’s always been a hard job, but at the moment it’s particularly tough. The guidelines are such that any normality is barely recognisable in the classroom, with perspex screens being erected and teachers wearing face shields and all manner of PPE to provide our children with a good education. So spare a thought for them this month as we head towards Christmas – we may not know what it will look like yet, but it will be a welcome break for most!

Stray dog Amber rehomed after a year
After waiting exactly 340 days to find her special someone, one of Dogs Trust Ilfracombe’s longestterm residents has trotted off to her forever home. Three-year old Lurcher Amber arrived at the West Down based rehoming centre in October 2019 after originally being found wandering the streets, and has been waiting to find a forever home ever since. That wait finally came to an end almost exactly 12 months later this year when Charlotte Ferrand and Ross Higgins adopted her, after two months of visits to get to know the shy pooch. The couple even rented a nearby holiday cottage so they
could make daily visits to make sure Amber felt comfortable with them before adoption day. Charlotte says: “She stole our hearts! Amber is certainly a very special girl and we feel very lucky to have been able to give her a home. We had decided we wanted to adopt a rescue dog and because of Covid, we weren’t able to go along to Dogs Trust Ilfracombe to look around, so we ended up looking on the website, which is where we saw Amber’s profile video and we fell in love with her. I sent in our application and chatted to one of the team who thought we’d be a suitable match. A couple of video calls
later, we’d watched Amber playing and the team did a virtual home visit to check our set up would be suitable for her. Then it was time to meet her! She was super nervous around new people, so the process took around two months and we visited her around 15 times to get to know her – including three visits to our home. It was definitely worth it as each time we saw her, she got more and more relaxed around us, it was a lovely thing to experience.” Dogs Trust Ilfracombe is not open for public browsing but you can still make an appointment to adopt or bring a dog to us. 12 help with reducing your carbon footprint
North Devon Council and Torridge District Council are working together and encouraging local residents and organisations to “Find your footprint” to help combat climate change. “Find your footprint” is a joint project between the two councils and local environmental entrepreneur, Mukti Mitchell that aims to make reducing your carbon footprint easy and fun. The project has been launched in response to the national climate emergency declared across the UK by local authorities including the two councils. Other charities in the region, including Resurgence Trust, 361 Energy, Devon Wildlife Trust, Plastic Free North Devon, Beaford Arts
and the AONB Biosphere Reserve, have also joined the project, which hopes to reach 10,000 people across the region. Individuals and organisations can find out their carbon footprint using a five-minute online tool and then pick one action from a range of easy lifestyle options that save CO2. They can then measure their footprint again to see how much it has reduced as part of “Celebrate your Savings” week in March 2021. Mukti Mitchell, director of Carbon Savvy, a CO2 saving advice provider, says: “The great news is that reducing your carbon footprint almost always leads to improvements in your quality of life,
so this will also make us all happier, healthier and wealthier in Northern Devon over the next 10 years. “When I ask people at talks and workshops what they want to do to improve their quality of life, I often hear: spend more time with my family, partner, children and friends. Spend more time in the garden, or walking the dog or in nature. This image is all about perspective, and at a time like the present it’s important to try and keep as much of that as possible. As you can see in this picture, the tangled, intertwining nets are in focus and dominate the composition - while Lantern Hill and St Nicholas’s Chapel are blurred and feel distant. Much like life during Covid, the restrictions on day-to-day life seem to dominate our mindset while the light at the end of the tunnel feels a long way away, particularly at the moment. Although here in North Devon we’ve only had a relatively low number of cases, other parts of the country are rife with the virus at the time of writing. So please stay safe and try to keep the end game at the fore.
