Happy June you lovely Ilfracombe-ians you! In this month’s issue we focus in on one of my favourite spots in the town - Bicclescombe Park.

Like many of us who were born and bred in the town, I spent a large chunk of my youth at that park - playing football, tennis, leaping off the park equipment and thrashing around the lake in a pedalo (OK, we’re going back a few years there)! But as you will see, this jewel in Ilfracombe’s crown is continuing to flourish thanks to the fantastic people who love it as much as we do. Turn to page 10 to find out more!

double-whammy for beautiful bicclescombe

Bicclescombe Park celebrates a double win this month. Not only has it retained its prestigious Pride In Parks award, but it has also scooped a healthy £15,000 in funding to restore its historic mill.

Having flown the Green Flag since 2004 and achieving the highest rating in the Pride in Parks awards last year, Bicclescombe Park has been awarded five stars again by this year’s judge. Pride in Parks, which is run by Southwest in Bloom in conjunction with the Royal Horticultural Society, is awarded to parks and open spaces that demonstrate good community involvement, excellent maintenance and development, and care of the environment.

Gary Tovey from Bicclescombe Park Impovement Group, says: “We’ve seen massive growth in visitor numbers to Bicclescombe and with the recent play equipment

And last month North Devon Council’s Executive approved £15,000 funding for the restoration of the mill wheel at Bicclescombe Park. The project will be completed using £9,590 of Section 106 funding*, £5,710 from the council’s repairs budget and £1,500 raised by the Bicclescombe Park Improvement Group.

During the refurbishment, the wheel buckets and boards will be replaced, the mill wheel repainted, debris cleared from the waterwheel pit and the gable wall repainted.

Inside the building, the timber beams and floor joists will be replaced and a new window fitted to the gable over the mill wheel. The restoration will bring the wheel back into full working order, adding to the attraction of the historic mill house and tea room in this multi-award winning park.

This stunning image of a moody summer sunset at Wildersmouth beach was sent in by the ludicsrously talented Nick Dickenson who, quite rightly, points out that this must be one of the best “sunset spots” in Devon. You certainly won’t hear me arguing with that! I recently had cause to visit London and while I enjoyed my brief time there, the fast pace of life and dull grey surroundings made me miss Ilfracombe every single minute I was there. Never take this town for granted!

Open Nights are about whoever comes along, and anyone and everyone has a chance to ‘sing, say or play’. If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome to come along, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.

On Saturday 24th, we look forward to the very welcome return of Bob Fox, the holder of one of the finest voices around! Bob has been a professional singer and musician since the mid-1970s, working initially in duos with the likes of Tom McConville and Stu Luckley. As a solo performer, he continued to work around the folk scene and toured both at home and abroad.

He started the new century with an appearance as a ‘special guest’ at Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival, which started an almost meteoric rise in recognition in the wider music world, and continued with tours across the pond in America and Canada, and down

Over the years, he has several times been nominated in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, but never quite got there – but who can tell why one person gets it rather than another?

In 2006 he was invited to join an elite group of singers, writers and musicians to record six new Radio Ballads commissioned by the BBC, which received great acclaim.

For several years now, Bob has held the role of ‘Songman’ in the stage production of ‘WarHorse’, both in the West End and on tour. In breaks between performances, he has been doing solo gigs, in a duo with Billy Mitchell of Lindisfarne, and working with Benny Graham, Jez Lowe and Billy

Mitchell as The Pitmen Poets, recently at The Plough, Torrington, drawing on the rich traditions of songwriting in their native North East of England.

With such a long musical career, it seems unlikely to be ending any time soon, and solo gigs are relatively few and far between, so don’t miss this opportunity of seeing him in the intimate surroundings of Shammick Acoustic!

A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience.
