A WORD FROM THE EDITOR... I say it every year, but it’s always true - I LOVE September in Ilfracombe. The crowds quieten down, the weather is (usually) still good and Autumn is nearly upon us. It’s been a mixed summer in terms of the weather, but I can honestly say I can’t remember a season when I’ve seen the town so consistently busy! You could walk to the pier on any day and in any weather and find hundreds of people milling around, promenading if you will, and enjoying everything we have to offer - what a wonderful sight!

15th year of special status for park
Bicclescombe Park has retained its Green Flag status for the 15th consecutiv year, marking it as one of the UKs best green spaces. This international award is a sign that the park boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and provides excellent visitor facilities. Bicclescombe is managed by North Devon Council, along with the help of the Bicclescombe Park User Group. International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have
more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who
work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Award. We congratulate each & every winner on their fantastic achievement.”
Have your say on council’s top priorities People in Ilfracombe are being encouraged to have their say on what they think North Devon Council should be focusing on. Following council elections in May this year, the new council has drafted a new corporate plan which is based on four priorities and it wants to know whether the public agree. The priorities are: * Protecting and cherishing our natural environment, including reducing carbon emissions across North Devon * Financial security in the wake of government bud-
get cuts - looking for innovative ways to save money and draw in more income without hitting the council tax payer’s pocket * Providing the best service to our customers - looking at all of our services from a customer’s perspective and improving our digital services * Creating a better future for North Devon by working together with our partners to create a vibrant economy for future generations The council has launched an online public consultation where people can read the plan, look at the
priorities and tell the council what they think. Leader of the Council Cllr David Worden says: “We are here to represent the people of North Devon and so it’s important that what we do in the future is what they want us to do. I’d encourage as many people as possible to have their say so that we can be confident that we are basing our future services and activities on what the people of North Devon want.” The survey is available at www.northdevon.gov.uk/ consultation and is open until the 15th September.

Two important players in town’s community have come together for a new venture which will see them working closer with one another. The Ilfracombe Academy has become the first corporate member of the Ilfracombe Rotary Club. The academy’s Head of IT Strategy and Communications, Rob Whitney, said the school is looking forward to forging strong community links and creating leadership opportunities for its students. Speaking about the scheme, Ilfracombe Rotary Club’s President Pam Cox said: “Ilfracombe Rotary Club is branching out in
offering a new category of membership within its Club – Corporate Membership. “We recognise that social responsibility of organisations, corporations and schools is growing in importance and Corporate Memberships invite them to participate in giving back to the community through the well-oganised systems and structures of Rotary. “Rotary membership also offers excellent opportunities for staff leadership development and a medium to learn more about community needs locally, nationally and internationally.” Mr Whitney added: “We

The view with COMBEBIRD
Combebird, like thousands of others, was at Birdman at the beginning of August - so, as one of th organisers of this event, of course I’m going to share one of her fantastic shots from the day. I could have chosen images of costumed aviators plunging into the harbour water, revellers enjoying a Pimms or Prosecco at the bar, dancing to the live music, scoffing any of the incredible food offerings or families enjoying the attractions and entertainment - but I went with this one because, well, it’s just stunning and shows another side to the event that many just don’t see. It was taken from the boat on which Combebird watched the jumping, just as the sun came out. And what a day it was!

And for a change, we are looking forward to special featured artists. Tricia Moore & John Connor became the duo Silvington after getting together at the excellent Folk on the Moor club at Ivybridge, S. Devon. With a growing reputation for fine vocal harmonies and varied accompaniment, they present a repertoire of both traditional and modern songs, many of them self-penned. But the most important thing about the Open Nights is that they provide an opportunity for anyone to have a go. Away from the noise of the bar, so no need to worry about the fact that there’s no PA, these evenings mean that you can give new material an airing or visit older items from your repertoire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Anyone is welcome to come along, whether or not they ‘sing, say or play’, and if you’re a musician and don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. The evening starts at about 8 p.m. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to Shammick Acoustic’s expenses. Our monthly concert takes place

on Saturday 28th, when our guest artists will be another duo, Mike Wilson & Damien Barber. These are two of the UK’s finest exponents of traditional song, and much in demand outside of their usual musical combinations. Mike Wilson is the youngest of the famed Wilson Family, the powerful Teeside singing sibllings who have raised many a rafter at festivals and folk clubs, not to mention the Royal Albert Hall and as part of Sting’s ‘The Last Ship’. Mike’s musical heritage is emphatically that of the North East, rural and industrial, traditional and modern. Damien was raised in Norfolk and was heavily influenced by earlier singers from that area, such as Walter Pardon and Peter Bellamy. He is a stylish and
distinctive singer, either unaccompanied or using guitar or concertina, and is probably best known these days for his roadshow ‘The Demon Barbers’, reaching out to new audiences through combining different styles of music and dance. Mike and Damien have a rich shared repertoire of traditional songs plus the work of more modern writers like Bellamy, Ewan MacColl and Mike Waterson often sung in full-throated harmony. An evening “chock full of nothing but great songs brilliantly sung” can be expected! Kitty Pretty Kitty is a very affectionate lap cat who would make a perfect companion, perhaps for an older or less mobile person, although at 7 years old she's very much in her prime and would also need safe access to the great outdoors.
