A WORD FROM THE EDITOR... Autumn is here - the leaves are changing colour and there’s a welcome chill in the air (well, it’s welcome for some). While Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations will soon be upon us, there will be some more excited about another upcoming event - dare I mention the C-word yet (that’s Christmas, just to be clear)! While I’ll admit that I am always the first to scoff at supermarkets stocking their festive wares now, it does secretly get me a little bit excited. It won’t be long now!

academy headteacher to step down

The headteacher of Ilfracombe Academy has announced that she plans to retire at the end of this academic year. Longstanding head Sharon Marshall revealed the news to parents in a newsletter issued in September. The popular head paid tribute to staff and pupils at the school, saying it had been a “real privilege” to work with them all. Mrs Marshall said she had decided to give a long period of notice to assist in finding her replacement and will leave at the end of this term in Summer 2020. Here’s her letter to parents in full: “I am writing to let you know that I will be retiring at the end of this academic year and that the school will shortly be going out to advert for a new Headteacher. “My reason for giving such a long period of notice to the Directors is so that the school has plenty of time to firstly appoint a successor at a time when recruitment can be challenging, and secondly so that there can be a well-planned handover of responsibilities. “It has been a real privilege to work with such a committed team of staff, students who are enthusiastic

and positive, and to have support from parents and so many areas of our wider community. We have all made a very positive start to term. Year 7 have made a great start in their new school and the other year groups have had a very purposeful and businesslike first few days. You may have seen in the press that

we were really delighted with our summer results which showed significant progress at A Level and some of the best progress we have seen at GCSE too. “We have exciting plans in place for this year too and I look forward to working with everyone for one final year at The Ilfracombe Academy.”

New lights will illuminate sea front

Ilfracombe will be getting brighter this Autumn thanks to more than £12,000 worth of new lights. The new lamps and LED colourchanging lights are set to be installed at the town’s sea front and on the southern slopes gardens to mak the area even more visually appealing. The lights have been paid for by North Devon Council who agreed to release £12,269 for the project at a recent meeting of its Strategy and Resources Committee. The money has come from a pot of what is called Section 106 funding. This is

money paid to the council by developers as part of the planning conditions of planning applications. The money can only be used for certain things, but is used primarily for public open space projects. The funding was designed to aid projects which will help to improve open spaces, with Chulmleigh also receiving £26,183 for a new adventure playground. Ilfracombe’s new lights, which the council say will “lighten, brighten and modernise” the sea front and southern slopes will start to be installed in the

autumn (work may have even started by the time we go to press). It is hoped that the new lighting will encourage more people to use the open space after dark by making it a safer and more attractive place to visit. Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden, said: “Section 106 funding, made as part of major planning applications, allows the council to give back to our communities in a meaningful way. “The funding for these two projects will provide much needed facilities which will help to improve public

The view with COMBEBIRD

This picture made me laugh when I stumbled across it on Facebook. Usually Combebird treats us to dazzling images of sunsets, glittering reflections and coastal curiosities - but, for me, this shot perfectly sums up this time of year. Here we are surrounded by all this wonderful scenery and natural beauty, yet our optimal view in this season is usually through a rain spotted window. But that’s just fine by me, there’s nothing cosier than wrapping up warm next to the fire, sipping a sweet hot chocolate and watching the elements do their thing. This is what the visitors and tourists don’t get to experience, this is unique to locals and, frankly, it’s why we choose to live here.

22 shammick acoustic A not-for-profit organisation - 2nd & 4th Saturdays at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin EX34 0ET - Contact: Tom & Barbara Brown - Tel: 01271 882366/07977 914736 Everyone is welcome to come along to Shammick Acoustic Open Nights, which this month takes place on Saturday 12th. Open Nights are all about having a go if you want to, whether or not you’re an experienced performer. If you’re not, you’ll find a very supportive and friendly environment in which to try something out, whether it be a song, music, poem or story, and that goes for those who want to try out a new piece that they’ve never performed in public before, though of course it’s perfect when you try it at home! Equally, any performer needs an audience, so whether or not you perform, you’ll be very welcome. There’s no admission charge on Open Nights – we just pass the pot round for donations towards expenses of running Shammick Acoustic. The evening is quite informal and starts around 8pm. It’s hard to believe that it’s well over six years since Bob & Gill Berry last gave a concert at Shammick Acoustic – and it’s been far too long! But they’ll be back with us on Saturday 26th October. The duo have a long history within the folk movement, having run Chippenham Folk Festival for many years, sometimes to the detriment of their ability to take their own music around the country. They’ve now handed that job over to others, which means that many

Bob & Gill Berry

clubs and festivals will have the chance to hear more of them. They also regularly run events at Sidmouth and Towersey Festivals. They were honoured by the English Folk Dance and Song Society for their significant contributions to the development and continuity of traditional English folk music, song and dance. But aside from all that, their strong voices with harmonies and some accompaniment on guitar, mandolin or bouzouki, are more than impressive! Last year saw the release of their latest album, ‘Echoes of Alfred’ with songs from the Alfred Williams collection from Wiltshire and the surrounding counties. Nothing fancy – just good, honest presentation of good, honest songs. Can’t wait to welcome them back!

A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin from 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30. Tickets for the concert are £9 in advance from Shammick Acoustic, from the Pack o’ Cards, or Pets’ Pantry, High Street, Combe Martin, online via www.wegottickets.com/ ShammickAcoustic, or £10 at the door. Shammick Acoustic is a not-for-profit organisation. More information can be found on the website at www. shammickacoustic.org.uk, or contact Tom or Barbara Brown on 01271 882366, or by e-mail at contact@shammickacoustic.org.uk.

Cat of the month! Boots Lovely little Boots is a lively and very friendly seven year old. She loves people and a warm lap to sit on. Coming from a quiet home in a quiet area, she'd probably do best if her new home is similar. That said, although she's only lived with adults in the past she has got on fine with visiting children. In fact, she seems an unusually confident and mature cat with a beautifully laid back attitude to life. Boots loves to go out, but doesn't wander too far we're told, and is always ready for a good meal! A recent vet check was all good, and as with all CP cats she's microchipped, neutered, and vaccinated. All she needs now is a loving new home.

WHIP-CRACK AWAY! CALAMITY JANE RIDES ON IN TO THE LANDMARK THEATRE

35

S I H T TH N O M

Joanie Baxendale as Calamity & Billy Buckingham as Wild Bill Hikock This month Small Pond Productions returns to the Landmark with their ‘all singing- all dancing production of the classic musical ‘Calamity Jane’. Hot on the heels of their recent productions of The Sound of Music and Oliver!, Calamity Jane promises not to disappoint, with a highly talented cast working hard in rehearsals to bring this family favourite to the stage. Director, Lee Baxendale says “ It’s always great to work with the Small Pond

company on any musical. There is so much talent in our town and surrounding and it’s great to be able to showcase that in our musicals.. Calamity Jane is such good fun and it really is a musical comedy with lots of humour and laugh out loud moments!” Based on the historical figure of the actual frontierswoman, Calamity Jane was first a major motion picture featuring Doris Day and Howard Keel It features the hit songs ‘The

Deadwood Stage’, ‘Windy City’ and the Oscar winning ‘Secret Love’. The show has a cast of over forty and will be backed by an 11 piece professional orchestra. Calamity Jane can be seen at The Landmark Thurs 17th - Sat 19th October at 7.30pm (Saturday Matinee at 2.30). Tickets are available from Landmark & Queen’s Theatre box offices on 01271 316 523 or online at www. queenstheatre-barnstaple. com.
