The event is always a corker, but this year three Ilfracombe ladies are taking part in memory of a lady close to many local people’s hearts. Linda Weeks, Margaret Rudd and Sharron Blackmore will be walking in honour of Ilfracombe dance teacher Betty Blackmore, who received care from the charity before she died. It’s such a great event and such a fantastic charity - so a massive well done to all those who take part!

council unveils ‘vision’ for pier
The kiosks at entrance of ilfracombe harbour North Devon Council has revealed a ‘vision’ for the future of Ilfracombe Pier which includes a new walkway, sculptures at the entrance and wheelchair access. The pieris known as the jewel in Ilfracombe’s crown and is owned by the council, who recently consulted on removing the old concrete kiosks at the entrance. The plans, which have been developed with Barnstaple-based architect Peregrine Mears, are designed to increase the popularity of the pier and make it more user friendly. The plans include a walkway inspired by the old
Victorian activity of “promenading” which would allow pedestrians an unbroken route around the pier without having to cross the paths of cars. With the proposed demolition of the concrete kiosks at the entrance of the pier, a new opening would be created - possibly incorporating some sort of sculpture. The road at the entrance would also be widened, the existing roundabout removed, a wheelchair ramp installed and a dedicated pedestrian crossing introduced. An old path up to the Grade I listed St Nicholas Chapel, which has until now ben closed off, could also be reopened. Speaking in the North Devon Journal, architect Peregrine Mears said: “Initially we were asked to come up with an idea of what the entrance
to the pier might look like if the current kiosks were gone and to suggest what it would be like if it were a bit more open. We thought about putting something to mark the entrance of the pier - some sort of sculpture or structure. That hasn’t really been decided, it’s up for discussion at the moment. The next thing was how could we make it more open to people, perhaps thinking about a walkway that connects right round the edge of the pier. We want to make it a bit more people friendly and a bit less car dominated.” The first sign of new life at the pier has recently been introduced as new boat kiosks have opened. Dave Hutchings of Ilfracombe Sea Safaris said: “They’re much better facilities to operate from and nicer things for customers to see.”

The view with COMBEBIRD
A photographer called James Ravilious spent his career documenting rural life right here in North Devon, mainly between the 1990s and 1970s. At the time the subjects of his pictures may have appeared rather run-of-the-mill, but looking back now we can appreciate the bygone era and lost traditions that they captured so beautifully. The boats being lowered into the harbour is one of those unique Ilfracombe spectacles. Not only does it draw people out to see those huge cranes in action, but it also acts as a bit of a seasonal marker, reminding us that summer is nearly here. Recording these moments of local tradition is, to my mind at least, a very important thing for the future.

These evenings give an opportunity for people to give new material an airing or visit older items from their repertoire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Anyone is welcome to come along, whether or not they ‘sing, say or play’, and if you’re a musician and don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Held in the ‘museum’ of the pub, so there’s no need to compete with bar noise. The evening starts at about 8 p.m. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to Shammick Acoustic’s expenses. This month’s concert is on the third, rather than the fourth Saturday of the month, so the 18th May, due to The Hunting of the Earl of Rone on the following weekend. And what a treat for everyone this concert will be! Our guest will be John Doyle, who is not that well-known in England, which is our loss – but the situation is improving. John is an ex-patriot Dubliner, living for many years now in the United States, where with Liz Carroll he has performed for President Obama and the US Congress, and received a Grammy nomination for ‘Best Traditional World Album. Influenced from his early years by not only Celtic

performers such as Paul Brady and Dick Gaughan, but English folk artists such as Nic Jones, Martin Carthy, Richard Thompson and The Watersons, he is acknowledged as one of the finest guitarists in Irish music, but also as a superb interpreter of traditional songs, and is increasingly heralded as an excellent writer of songs concerning Irish emigration. The list of people with whom he has worked is far too long to list here, but it includes Andy Irvine, Donal Lunny, Mike McGoldrick, Mary Black, Kate Rusby, Linda Thompson, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Joan Baez, to name but a few. Regularly touring throughout America, Europe and Ireland, until very recently his touring
in the UK has been more or less confined to Scotland, so Shammick Acoustic is privileged to present this amazing and charismatic musician and singer. A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience.
