It won’t be long before the tourist season is upon us once again, so it’s timely that this month we look at two issues that will effect our harbour. One concerns those who organise boat trips - a popular past time in Ilfracombe and another that concerns the entrance to the harbour, or as I always think of it, the jewel in the town’s crown. Harbour kiosks could be demolished
The kiosks at entrance of ilfracombe harbour Plans have been submitted to demolish the concrete entrance kiosks at Ilfracombe pier. Having been built back in the 1950s, the kiosks are used as offices for some of the local boat firms. However, the structure has developed “concrete cancer” and North Devon Council, who own and operate the pier, have suggested it might be time for an upgrade. In the planning application it says: “This application has arisen as a result of inherent structural defects being identified in the current kiosks’ or toll booths as they were originally known, located at the entrance to Ilfracombe Harbour. As a result of this, officers of the council, supported by the senior management team, have made the decision to move forward by removing the kiosks and associ-
ated porticos and plinths from the site. Whilst we fully appreciate there are some heritage and historical elements which are of relevance and need to be given serious consideration in this respect, we feel strongly that this project should be look at on a very positive basis. Especially in terms of what it could bring to this specific area going forward. The removal of the current kiosks will allow the opening up of the entrance to the pier, combined with a more co-ordinated use of advertising signage, will provide much improved, safer access into and out of the pier itself. “We are in the process of having architectural impressions prepared which should give a visual aspect to how this will have a positive impact on this area of the town. As a team, the
harbourmaster and estates, very much view this project as the first phase of what could be an exciting opportunity to enhance this area of the harbour and make a positive contribution to the conservation area and adjoning listed buildings, including Old Quay Head and Lantern Hill. Subject to the removal of the kiosks thereby creating space in this vicinity, the chief executive has suggested we take the opportunity to engage with the planning team and conservation officer on the potential to create a more appropriate entrance feature for the pier to celebrate and embrace its heritage and identity for harbour users and visitors to the town.” For more information or to comment on the plans visit www.northdevon.gov.uk and head to planning.

Council consults on boat trip ‘touting’
North Devon Council is carrying out a consultation on plans to introduce a Public Spaces protection Order (PSPO) at Ilfracombe Harbour. A number of licensed boat trip providers operate from Ilfracombe Harbour and in the busy summer months, ticket sales can become competitive. The proposed PSPO is intended to give a more balanced opportunity for boat trip providers to secure customers. The proposed PSPO will restrict the soliciting of services at Ilfracombe Harbour by word of mouth, handing out leaflets or other means, unless under the express terms of a licence or the written permission of the Harbourmaster or an authorised council officer. The consultation runs for a period of four weeks from 4 February to 4 March 2019. Ilfracombe Harbourmaster, Georgina Carlo-Paat, said: “During this last season, being my first as appointed Harbourmaster, I spent the majority of my time walking the harbour, getting to know the people and how the harbour works. I personally received reports from members
of the public in regards to the amount of ‘leafletting’ that they had experienced when walking down Quay Road to the harbour entrance and at the entrance itself and on occasion being approached before even turning onto the harbour approaches. I was asked what I was going to do about this. For this reason, the council is consulting on the use of a PSPO to restrict leafletting or touting to defined areas. Once the results of the consultation are known, the issue will be reported to Full Council for a decision as to whether to proceed. I would invite all interested members of the public or businesses, whether in favour of a restriction or not, to submit their comments to us. I can assure everyone that these comments will be taken into account when taking a decision.” Executive Member responsible for Community Safety, Councillor Pat Barker, says: “There is a fantastic choice of boat trips available at the harbour, from fishing trips to dolphin cruises. The PSPO will ensure there is a level playing
field for all operators and that visitors can make their own choices about which excursions to choose. Our Harbourmaster has already discussed the proposed PSPO with the Ilfracombe Harbour Board and Harbour Forum. I love this picture, not only is there a really moody sky overhead, the inclusion of the benches is what makes it special. It got me thinking about all the different places there are to sit in out town. Every place of note or a spot that offers a stunning vista is blessed with a bench, for which there is only one intended activity: sitting. Life is hectic, life is fast - we should all be taking more time to just sit and take things in. It’s this principal on which mindfulness is based, the art of being in the present and appreciating your surroundings. Try it, you might like it!

24 shammick acoustic A not-for-profit organisation - 2nd & 4th Saturdays at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin EX34 0ET - Contact: Tom & Barbara Brown - Tel: 01271 882366/07977 914736 After a great Open Night last month (well, it was when I wrote this!) when we barely made it twice round the room, we’re looking forward to a similar number of people in February and the coming month, which is on Saturday 9th March. Open Nights are all about having a go if you want to, whether or not you’re an experienced performer. If you’re not, you’ll find a very supportive and friendly environment in which to try something out, and that goes for those who want to try out a new piece that they’ve never performed in public before, though of course it’s perfect when you try it at home! There’s no admission charge on Open Nights – we just pass the pot round for donations towards expenses of running Shammick Acoustic. The evening is quite informal and starts around 8pm. After February’s sell-out concert with Kimber’s Men, we look forward to a first visit from the outstanding trio Granny’s Attic on Saturday, 23rd March. One of the younger rising star groups on the folk scene, Granny’s Attic have been stunning audiences with their skilled singing and playing over the last few years. Having started playing together at school in Worcester, all three of them went on to study music at degree level, although not the usual ‘folk’ degree at

Newcastle. In 2014 the group were nominated in the BBC’s Young Folk Award, and since then have been in huge demand at festivals and clubs all over the country in between studying. Cohen BraithwaiteKilcoyne plays melodeon, concertina as well as singing. George Sansome also sings, and plays guitar – he also plays euphonium, but not in Granny’s Attic! Lewis Wood provides fiddle and mandolin, and writes many of the tunes the group play. In his other life, he is a composer, and also plays for dancing. Such talent is exhibited by this ‘boy band’, and their enthusiasm is infectious! We’re in for an exceptional night! A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as
support artists, as well as enjoying being part of the audience. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin from 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30.
