A WORD FROM THE EDITOR... June is now upon us - but what a month May has been! We started off by electing new representatives to the town in the local elections (see P10) and as I write this the annual Ilfracombe’s fantastic Art Trail has just been and gone (more on that on P22). The summer season is nearly upon us and, I have to say, I think the town is looking about the best I have ever seen it. Already visitors are flocking here in their numbers and I have a feeling 2019 is going to be a great season for all our cracking local businesses!

Meet THE new (and Old) councillors
Ilfracombe, along with the rest of North Devon, went to the polls in May to elect both town and district councillors. While some familiar faces return to their seats on North Devon Council, there are also a few new faces who were voted in to represent the town. Stalwart councillors Geoff Fowler (Lib Dem) and Paul Crabb (Conservative) were re-elected to the West and East wards respectively, while newcomers Netti Pearson (Green Party, West ward), Daniel Turton (Conservative, East
ward) and Jim Campbell (Independent, East ward) were also voted in. North Devon Council had previously been run by the local Conservative party as they had the majority of seats. However, the Liberal Democrats secured the most seats this time round, though not enough for an overall majority. At the council’s first full meeting on May 16, Councillor David Worden was elected as the new leader of the Council with Malcolm Prowse elected as deputy leader. Both will stay in the
posts until Annual Council on April 1 next year. The council has adopted a new constitution and has changed from operating an executive system to a committee system. Part of that change means that the Leader and Deputy Leader are appointed on an annual basis. A new Strategy and Resources committee replace the Executive as the main decision making body of the council. One of Ilfracombe’s new councillors Netti Pearson has been selected to form part of thi new committee.

Park gets £15k of new play equipment Work to install new play equipment at Greenways play area in Ilfracombe has now been completed, with the all-new climbing frame now available for young people to use. The equipment - described by the council as a “multi-play unit” - was installed after a consultation with local ward members (prior to the recent elections). Play equipment does not cme cheap - and this was no exception with the unit setting the council back £15,500. However, the project has been funded by
what is called Section 106 money from the 41 dwelling Torrs Park development. Section 106 funding is a financial contribution made by developers towards the local infratructure or to provide new amenities. Mark Kentell, Contracts Delivery Manager at North Devon Council, says: “It is great to see money from local developments being spent at the heart of the community on projects such as this one which will provide play equipment for children to enjoy.”

As I type this the Ilfracombe Art Trail has just been and gone - and what an INCREDIBLE event it was! There was an huge amount of talent on display at some truly fantastic venues - and to top itoff, the sun shined the entire weekend. The highlight of my weekend was paying a trip to the famous Round House at the Cairn which, if you have never seen it up close or been inside, is absolutely unbelievable! Beautifully decorated rooms, amazing gardens and the most stunning vistas of our lovely town! Combebird was, of course, involved in the Art Trail and while I could wax lyrical about this beautiful picture of hers, the truth is I just like it!

Away from the noise of the bar, so no need to worry about the fact that there’s no PA, these evenings give an opportunity for people to give new material an airing or visit older items from their repertoire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Anyone is welcome to come along, whether or not they ‘sing, say or play’, and if you’re a musician and don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. The evening starts at about 8 p.m. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to Shammick Acoustic’s expenses. Our concert night on Saturday 22nd sees the return of the wonderful Paul Downes. Paul is one of our favourite musicians, and we’re proud to say that he is a son of Devon as well, hailing from the village of Lympstone in the east of the county. This will be his fifth visit to Shammick Acoustic, having accompanied both the late Maggie Boyle and Mick Ryan as well as playing two solo concerts. Having started as a classical guitarist, including a solo recital in Westminster Abbey as a 16-year-old, he joined up with Phil Beer and subsequently toured all around

the UK and Europe for a few years as Downes and Beer, later forming Arizona Smoke Revue with Bill Zorn. He has also worked with the legendary Pete Seeger, and currently, The Joyce Gang, One of the most respected artists on today’s British acoustic music scene, he performs a dazzling array of styles with effortless brilliance, and is a fine singer of both traditional and modern songs. With his sensitive yet fun approach to live performance, a thoroughly entertaining evening is guaranteed. A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part
of the audience. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin from 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30. Cat of the month! Captain Captain is a very large, handsome and muscular boy with striking green eyes. He is very laid back, good tempered and loves attention and tummy rubs. Unfortunately Captain has tested positive for FIV which although not transmitted to people or dogs means he will now need to be kept away from other cats. This would involve keeping him either as an indoor only cat or allowed only into a cat-proof garden. He is so friendly and good natured that he should be happy to live with children and possibly a dog and would make a great addition to many a household.
