council officers get police powers
Council officers in North Devon now have more powers to tackle anti-social behaviour in the district. North Devon Council’s Environmental Protection officers have received accreditation of the Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) run by Devon and Cornwall Police. The scheme allows chief constables to grant people who work in community safety roles with a limited range of legal powers, to enhance the contribution they make in tackling anti-social behaviour. The council’s five Environmental Protection officers will now have the power to access and share information with the police and also the power to request names and addresses from people for a relevant offence or anti-social behaviour. They will also be able to issue fixed penalty notices for certain disorder offences and have the power to stop and direct traffic, which will assist with the recovery of abandoned vehicles. The main benefits of the accreditation include: * Increasing uniformed presence on the streets (all CSAS accredited officers wear an ID badge) * Reductions in local issues such as street drinking,
begging and dog fouling * Saving police time in community safety to deal with low-level crime and disorder * Promoting partnership working and the exchange of information, helping to reduce crime and improve community safety North Devon Council Leader, Councillor David Worden, says: “This new accreditation will greatly assist our officers in their work tackling anti-social behaviour and environmental crimes. We want local communities to feel safe in their neighbourhoods
and to know that things are being done to keep them safe.” Partnership Superintendent Claire Armes said: “They are not a replacement for our neighbourhood policing team, but work in partnership to complement each other’s work.” CSAS Manager Becki Brodest added: “There are a number of benefits of the scheme including reassurance to members of the community of the training and vetting completed by the officers.” More information on antisocial behaviour visit www. northdevon.gov.uk/asb.

Why not give aikido a go at new club Ever fancied trying your hand at martial arts? If so, a new club in Ilfracombe might be just for you! Set up by local and 20 year Aikido veteran Matt Gallagher, the Shinbukai club is designed to teach and train in the Nishio style, which is completely new for North Devon. The difference between this medium and standard Aikido is a focus on body positioning, ‘atemi’ (strikes used in Aikido to interrupt your opponent’s attacks) and a good understanding of the sword. Matt said: “This is a
great opportunity in Ilfracombe to learn a fantastic martial art in a style rarely seen in the UK. This stunning image may look like a vintage print from Century’s past, but it was actually taken a mere few weeks ago - the wonder of smart phone filters and modern digital imagery eh! The ship in the picture is, I am reliably informed, a square rigged training boat named Tenacious - and it visited Ilfracombe towards the end of last month. Another, slightly larger ship will be visiting the town soon too. The Holland America cruise liner MS Rotterdam will make two calls at Ilfracombe in North Devon on August 9 and then again on September 24. As well as two theatres, a casino and outdoor swimming pool, the 238-metre long vessel also boasts “a multi-million dollar art and antique collection”.

Away from the noise of the bar, so no need to worry about the fact that there’s no PA, these evenings give an opportunity for people to give new material an airing or visit older items from their repertoire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Anyone is welcome to come along, whether or not they ‘sing, say or play’, and if you’re a musician and don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. The evening starts at about 8 p.m. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to Shammick Acoustic’s expenses. Our concert night on Saturday 27th sees the return of the delightful Kentbased songmaker Helen North. This lady is gaining a growing reputation for her skilfully-turned lyrics, strongly visual songs and beautiful, true voice. Her knowledge of musical forms is evident in the breadth of styles in her musical composition. Her ‘day job’ as a sailing instructor has informed much of her writing, and her debut CD ‘Shifting Sands’ has brought her songs to the attention of other artists such as Mick Ryan, renowned for his own songwriting – a real compliment in itself.

Helen was the winner of Towersey Festival’s open mic competition, opening more doors for her to perform at clubs and festivals nationwide. Locally, some may remember her performances at Sea Ilfracombe a few years ago, much to the delight of many, particularly in the Yacht Club. Singing both self-penned and traditional songs, her captivating performances have her audiences in gales of laughter one moment, and rapt attention the next. This talented lady is well worth catching! A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being part of
the audience. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin from 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30.
