Harbourmaster scoops top award
Georgina Carlo-Paat (centre) receiving her award Ilfracombe’s harbourmaster has picked up an internationally recognised award for services to the port and dredging industry. Captain Georgina Carlo-Paat received the DPC (Dredging and Port Construction) Magazine Commendation for Services to the Industry Award at a ceremony last month, an achievement which highlights an outstanding individual who has made a positive impact and contribution to the industry. The 2018 Dredging and Port Construction Awards promote innovation, efficiency and sustainability in the dredging industry.
The industry is constantly evolving to keep pace with the wider maritime sector, introducing new, more environmentally friendly means of operations, incorporating new technology such as sensors and digitalisation, and also taking on more ambitious projects. Georgina Carlo-Paat said: “It was an honour to receive this award and it was a privilege to be able to represent Ilfracombe Harbour at the award ceremony in the company of such internationally acclaimed people.” Chief Executive of North Devon Council, Mike Man-
sell, says: “George is no stranger to achievement, which is why we were so pleased to appoint her as our harbourmaster. “This award is well deserved, so many congratulations.” Georgina has been in position as Ilfracombe’s harbourmaster for six months and is one of very few women who hold that role in the UK. She was one of the first of a new wave of women in the UK to become a Class 1 Master Mariner, which means she can sail any ship, of any size, anywhere in the world.

What matters to you in the district? Whatever needs changing in your local area, you could be the person to change it by becoming a councillor. With a few months to go until North Devon goes to the polls, potential candidates for the district elections are being encouraged to find out more about what it means to become a district councillor. North Devon Council is holding a prospective candidates
event on Tuesday 5 February. The aim is to give people an understanding of what the role involves and discuss aspects of becoming a councillor. Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor Des Brailey, says: “Decisions made by councillors affect the lives of everyone in the area in countless ways. Representing a population of over 93,000 across the district, understanding the issues and
concerns they face and taking action are the most important tasks that any councillor undertakes. North Devon Council can only be as effective, relevant and vibrant as the people elected to run it. The council needs councillors who are capable, energetic and engaged, with a commitment to local people and a passion for change.� The prospective candidates event starts at 6.15pm on Tuesday 5 February in the Barum room at Brynsworthy Environment Centre. Sir ian Mckellen is coming to combe
Lord of the Rings legend Sir Ian McKellen will officially launch the reopening of the Landmark theatre in Ilfracombe after a new firm was brought in to manage North Devon Theatres. North Devon Council has awarded a new contract for the operation of the theatres to Selladoor Worldwide, who will tak over this mont. The announcement follows the successful retender of the theatres contract after a very difficult period for North Devon’s theatres. Back in January 2017, the theatres were thrown into disarray when North Devon Theatres Trust unexpectedly announced it was going into administration and the theatres had to close. The closure was short-lived thanks to Parkwood Theatres, who stepped in to run the theatres for an interim period. Parkwood’s intervention ensured that both theatres remained operational while the council prepared and tendered
a new, long term operational contract. The council went out to tender for in August 2018, seeking an operator to run both theatres for 10 years and has formally awarded the new contract to Selladoor Worldwide. Selladoor is an international, award-winning theatre company with a fantastic reputation in theatre production. Executive Member for Parks, Leisure and Culture, Coun-
cillor Dick Jones says: “The future is looking very bright for our theatres for the next 10 years and beyond. We are very excited about the grand opening event at the Landmark in March, where fans of Sir Ian McKellen have the chance of entering a ballot to see his one man show, it’s going to be a fantastic start to The Landmark’s programme.” Phillip Rowntree of Selladoor Worldwide said: “Over the last ten years of producing in theatres of all scales and sizes, in the UK and around the world, Selladoor has always been acutely aware of the importance of local theatres in the regional landscape. We could not be more humbled by the trust vested in us by the Council and people of North Devon, nor could we be more excited by this thrilling new chapter in Selladoor’s life. And we start Shammick Acoustic’s New Year on Saturday 12th January with our usual AGM at 7 p.m. preceding the first of 2019’s Open Nights. Most people see AGMs as a necessary pain in the proverbial …, but this year’s is really important for a number of reasons. So if you want Shammick Acoustic to continue to provide opportunities for local people to perform in an informal and supportive environment, as well as the chance to hear top class acoustic musicians from all over the country and beyond in an up-close-and-personal situation, please come along to this very important meeting. January’s Open Night takes place straight after the AGM in the ‘museum’ at the Pack o’ Cards, well away from the noise of the bar. Open Nights are about anyone and everyone having a chance to ‘sing, say or play’ whatever takes their fancy, or just to listen and join in with the odd chorus if you prefer. If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the

club’s expenses. Our guest artist for January’s concert on Saturday, 26th is the one and only Jez Lowe. Always one of Shammick Acoustic’s favourite guest artists, it’s a treat to welcome back this brilliant North-Eastern songwriter. Jez just goes from strength to strength, with nominations in the BBC’s Folk Awards for both Folksinger of the Year and Best New Song – and that, without being part of the ‘younger generation’, says an awful lot about him. In a career that has lasted for at least forty years, his popularity shows no sign of abating, with tours all over the world, either solo, accompanying himself on guitar, cittern or harmonica, or with his band, The Bad Pennies; with James Keelaghan and Archie Fisher
in the Men of Words tour in Canada and the USA; as part of The Pitmen Poets with Bob Fox, Benny Graham and Billy Mitchell; with fellow songwriter Steve Tilston; and with the quirky supergroup, The Broonzies. As if this isn’t enough, he is also in constant demand to take part in a variety of song-writing projects such as The Radio Ballads (which earned him a Sony Radio Award) or Along the Wall. Belle’s Place, formerly known as The Real McCaf, is a safe and friendly environment for young people to meet and socialise. Run by qualified and experienced youth workers who offer advice, support, guidance and information on a wide range of areas affecting young people.
