We’re delighted to be able to give you details of the brand new Woolacombe Parkrun event which has only recently started but is already a firm hit among local runners, joggers and newcomers hoping to find a new hobby. I’d always hoped that Parkrun could have found a home in Ilfracombe but sadly there’s just nowhere big enough to really give it a proper go. That said, the stunning beach and rolling dunes at Woolacombe certainly aren’t a bad second place! Why not give it a go?

new parkrun draws big crowds

the woolacombe dunes parkrun volunteers team A brand new Parkrun for 2019 has proved very popular with runners from Ilfracombe. The new event on the dunes at Woolacombe is one of the toughest, but most beautiful, Parkruns in the UK. The stunning run is set on National Trust land and in the heart of the North Devon Coast Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The 5km (3.1m) route starts at the stunning Marine Drive car park overlooking the award-winning beach. It then heads down onto the rugged dunes before hitting the beach and returning back

on the dunes to the start point. Jonathan Fairhurst, National Trust lead ranger for the area and Parkrun event director, said: “The dunes at Woolacombe are a special place to locals and tourists alike. We love to see people enjoying our places and Parkrun offers a fantastic opportunity for people to get active in what is surely one of the most stunning Parkrun locations in the world.”

The weekly free event happens at 9am on every Saturday morning and welcomes everyone to their events free of charge. Jonathan added: “Those keen

to participate or volunteer should head to the Parkrun website to sign up for their runner’s barcode (which needs to be brought along to every event). A team of local volunteers have come together to make it happen but they’re always looking for more help to keep the weekly free event going.

“The run is open to everyone - from the fittest athletes to those looking for a way to gently get themselves active in a supportive and social setting.”

One thing Combebird does superbly in her photographs is reflections, in this case those of a mellow evening’s sky in the water soaked sands of the harbour. February is a good month for reflection. Caught thoughtfully between the January blues and pre-Easter March madness, February is a time to take stock of one’s life and perhaps even formulate some meaningful plans for the year ahead (not like those New Year’s resolutions which most of us have probably already binned). In the busy age we live in, it’s really important to take some quiet time to reflect and, fortunately for us, Ilfracombe has some uniquely serene spots to do a good bit of thinking.

Open Nights are about anyone and everyone having a chance to ‘sing, say or play’ whatever takes their fancy, or just to listen and join in with the odd chorus if you prefer. If you’re a musician and you don’t want to play solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. Anyone is welcome, and although encouraged to participate, they won’t be pressurised to do so. There’s no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses. At February’s concert on Saturday, 23rd one of the most popular shanty and maritime groups in the country, Kimber’s Men, make a welcome return to Shammick Acoustic. Their use of harmonies is second to none, particularly with John Bromley, probably the finest bass singer on the British folk scene. John has been singing folk songs since his teens, and has worked both as a solo artist and with several folk groups. Neil Kimber likewise has a long history of singing, with a massive repertoire of songs – he’s also the only real sailor in the group! The group is completed with the powerful and bluesy voice of Gareth Scott, and the high harmonies

of Steve Smith. Their various instruments – guitars, whistle, bodhran, etc. – give another dimension to the group’s performance. Kimber’s Men have appeared at maritime festivals all over Europe as well as in the UK, and have featured on a number of TV programmes, including Gareth Malone’s ‘Sea Songs’ – BBC4’s most viewed programme of the year. The audience can expect to have plenty to join in with, and to be thoroughly entertained by real quality singing. There have been full houses for both their previous visits and tickets are already selling well, so don’t miss out! A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as enjoying being

part of the audience.

Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin from 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30.
