I write this from the comfort of my air conditioned office while outside the muggy closeness of the ongoing heatwave continues to swelter.

It’s the typical British attitude, we long for sun and when it arrives we moan it’s too hot! But uncomfotable as it is, remember the amazing effect this incredible weather will have on local businesses. If the heatwave continues, many families will ditch the last minute holidays abroad and look for somwhere closer to home.

So despite my sweaty complection and sunburnt cheeks, long may the heatwave continue!

arches street drinker prosecuted

North Devon Council has successfully prosecuted a local man for breaching a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO), which deals with drinking alcohol in public places. The case was heard at North Devon Magistrates Court on Tuesday 3 July 2018. Hans Ellis from Ilfracombe was fined £100 with victim surcharge £30 and costs of £60 for drinking alcohol at Market Arches in Ilfracombe. Mr Ellis did not attend the hearing, so the court heard the evidence in his absence. North Devon Council’s Executive Member for Community Safety, Councillor Pat Barker, says: “This conviction shows that the council is serious about tackling anti-social behaviour. We will continue to work actively with the

police to enforce the street drinking PSPO. Similar orders apply to parts of Barnstaple, South Molton, Woolacombe and Croyde and there are special signs posted in the area that is covered. We will continue to work with the police to address anti-social behaviour in problem areas,

this includes taking action where necessary but also signposting vulnerable individuals to support services that are available in the district.”

Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs), were introduced in 2014, and sit amongst a broad range of powers and tools to help tackle anti-social behaviour locally. PSPOs are aimed at ensuring public spaces can be enjoyed free from anti-social behaviour.

third generation takes over family firm

A family business in Ilfracombe will be taken over by the third generation this month. John Hiscock will take the reigns at Hiscock Plumbing on August 1st. The business was founded by his grandfather Stan Hiscock in 1946 when he was demobbed from the REMY. Before the war he had been plumbing and teaching plumbing part time at the Technical College in Barnstaple. He used his skills learned in the REMY, welding and repairing vehicles to build handcarts and help keep the business afloat until he became established. When his son Ian joined the business in the 1960s the men still walked to jobs carrying

their tool bags. Stan retired in 1976 saying it was getting too technical for him and his son took over. Ian’s son John joined the company in the late 90’s before leaving for New Zealand, where he worked on a variety of buildings from New Build High Rises to Farm

Stations. He returned in 2011 rejoined the company. Ian retired in 2017 after 50 years in the business to let the younger generation take the reins. John continues to keep his skills up to date with training courses and his Gas Safe qualifications.

At the time of writing, there is only one word being repeatedly uttered by the nation - no, not Brexit (although that is also mindnumbingly repetative). I am, of coure, talking about the meteorological phenomenon that is the heatwave. But is it actually a heatwave? It feels like it’s gone on way too long for this seemingly temporary moniker, perhaps we are now just living in a truly seasonal country where the summers bake in the hot sun and the winters are smothered with creamy pillows of snow (like they were earlier this year). Either way, one thing is for sure, Combebird will be there to capture the seasons, just as she has done with this sparkling summer sunset. Don’t forget the suncream!

Hilary Spencer trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, and has one of the most staggering voices ever to be heard on the British acoustic scene, with a breath-taking range of tone and mood. Previously known as ‘the voice’ of award-winning a capella trio Artisan, she also works

with the Mrs Ackroyd Trio, performing the musical works of the renowned comedy poet Les Barker. Grant Baynham became a household name with his five years as resident performer on the ‘That’s Life!’ TV programme with Esther Rantzen. A formidable songwriter and guitarist, his energy and enthusiasm create a high-powered performance in virtually every genre imaginable, from Django Reinhardt to Bach. With the pair’s supreme sense of the ridiculous, and their polished musical skill, their partnership creates entertainment which is second to none. As Ned Sherrin said, it’s ‘comic song touched with gold’! A number of local or maybe not-so-local

performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as audience. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards from 8 p.m.
