‘major improvements’ for harbour
Major improvements are being planned for Ilfracombe Harbour to make it safer and more welcoming to its visitors - but not everyone is happy about it. North Devon Council is set to launch a public consultation on plans that they say will “celebrate th heritage of the harbour” whilst also making it “fit for purpose”. The plans include: * Creating an official entrance so people know they are entering the harbour * Improving the facilities for the commercial operators with brand new, fit for purpose, ticket sales kiosks that are modern, inviting and designed in cooperation with the interested boat trip operators * Removing the 1950s booths which will open up the vista of the harbour entrance to be more welcoming for residents and visitors * Widening the road, vastly improving the safety of pedestrians and cars * Creating a larger trading area for the commercial boat operators along the side of the pier, alleviating the cramped and congested area occupied by the old booths, creating a more pleasant environment for all harbour users * Enabling the underlying pipework that provides
The kiosks at entrance of ilfracombe harbour fresh water to be upgraded which is currently hard to access. But while the plans hav been lauded by the council, local boat operators say thy are not happy about the proposals. They have cited a number of reasons for their opposition, claiming that the existing kiosks, which date back to th 1950s, are not actually in as bad a state as many people believe. Despite that, the council has revealed plans to replace the concrete structures with newer kiosks which thy say will “create a larger trading area for existing commercial boat operators”. Chairman of Ilfracombe Harbour Board Cllr Geoff Fowler says: “The current booths were never built for their current purpose and do not reflect the image of regeneration that
Ilfracombe is striving for. There is now the opportunity to look to the future and bring in a new era of vitality to the harbour for the benefit of everyone.” Deputy Chairman of Ilfracombe Harbour Board Cllr Ian Meadlarkin says: “Ilfracombe Harbour is a wonderful facility but it needs to be made safer and more inviting. These plans are about celebrating the heritage of the harbour but also making it fit for purpose for the future.” The new kiosks are due to be installed in April with a planning application for the road widening expected to be made later in the year. unsuitable decking lands man in court
A North Devon resident has been ordered to pay a total of £791.25 after failing to comply with a Planning Enforcement Notice. On Tuesday 12 March at North Devon Magistrates Court, Mr Robert William Burgess pleaded guilty for failing to comply with the notice issued by North Devon Council to remove raised decking from the rear of 103 High Street, Ilfracombe. The decking had been constructed at the property without planning permission and was considered to be too close to the rear and windows of neighbouring properties with the potential for noise and disturbance. Failure to comply with the notice issued last summer
resulted in the case being taken to court by the council. Head of Place at North Devon Council, Michael Tichford, says: “Prosecution is always a last resort for us but is action that needs to be taken to put right breaches of planning control. This action can be avoided by complying with enforcement notices when issued which we will always follow up because of the impact unauthorised development can have within the district. We welcome enquiries and applications from the public through our pre-application enquiry service to find out if planning permission is needed before starting development work. Carrying out work
without the right permissions can prove costly especially if the development needs to be taken down and the property or land put back to how it was before it started.” Mr Burgess was ordered to pay a total of £791.25.

One of the things I love about Combebird’s photography is that she’s not one of these pretentious pseudo snappers who needs incredibly expensive equipment and ridiculously long lenses. A mantra I often remember is “the best camera is the one you have with you” - and that is entirely true. If you see something that captures your eye and you have an instant camera on you, get snapping in the most imaginative way you can think. This image would probably have been great as it is, but the joy of mobile phone photography - something we all have at our fingertips - is the ability to add creative filters which can transform our mini digital snaps into something quite breathtaking!

Open Nights are all about having a go if you want to, whether or not you’re an experienced performer. If you’re not, you’ll find a very supportive and friendly environment in which to try something out, and that goes for those who want to try out a new piece that they’ve never performed in public before, though of course it’s perfect when you try it at home! Equally, any performer needs an audience, so whether or not you perform, you’ll be very welcome. There’s no admission charge on Open Nights – we just pass the pot round for donations towards expenses of running Shammick Acoustic. The evening is quite informal and starts around 8pm. Everyone looks forward to a bit of home culture, and that’s what our April concert on Saturday 27th provides. Jim Causley needs little introduction, as he is a Devon-grown talent, who relishes the songs, music and folklore of his native West Country. His skill as a singer, songwriter, composer and musician is however recognised much further afield, as evidenced by his various awards and work for both radio and TV. His relationship to the celebrated Cornish poet Charles Causley has resulted in him setting

many of his poems to music, and to composing the soundtrack to the BBC4’s biographical film about him. More recently, the Charles Causley Trust commissioned Jim to create a new album of the poet’s children’s poems set to music, which is a total delight. As those who have heard Jim before, at Shammick Acoustic or elsewhere, will know, an evening with him will include beautiful singing, moving ballads, hilarious ditties and everything in between. Often accompanied with accordion, and served with a gurt dollop of West Country humour, it’s one not to be missed. A number of local or visiting performers will, as usual, be there as support artists, as well as
enjoying being part of the audience. Shammick Acoustic takes place at The Pack o’ Cards, High Street, Combe Martin from 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7.30.
