Despite these hiccups, the digital currency has remained a Wall Street darling for past several months. The latest love letter to Bitcoin comes from America’s most valuable automaker, Tesla Inc. On February 9, Bitcoin price on hit a record above $47,000 after Tesla’s announcement of a fresh $1.5 billion injection in the redhot currency. The electric vehicles maker also said it would begin accepting Bitcoin as a form of payment for its cars, trucks and other products.

This is the biggest endorsement the controversial cryptocurrency has received from a mainstream company. Elon Musk, Tesla’s founder and the world’s richest man, has been raving over the cryptocurrency for past several months, inducing the much-talked about Bitcoin rally that lasted several weeks until the end ofthe year.

Tesla, Inc. revealed in a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday that it has acquired $1.5 billion in Bitcoins in January. The revelation soared Bitcoin price to around $44,203, a significant gain of over 13% in early trade on CoinDesk.

Bitcoins worth more than $30 billion are held by companies using them alongside traditional reserves such as cash and shares.

In more volatile markets, Bitcoin price momentarily touched $47,000 for the first time before it boomerang. It was last traded at $45,669.

“In January 2021, we updated our investment policy to provide us with more flexibility to further diversify and maximize returns on our cash that is not required to maintain adequate operating liquidity,” Tesla said in a 10-K filing with the U.S. SEC.

Andy Jassy, head of cloud division Amazon Web Services known as AWS, has been named Amazon’s next CEO. Jassy, 53, joined Amazon in 1997 after Harvard Business School, founding AWS and growing it to a cloud platform used by millions of customers, the company’s website said.

Andy Jassy’s appointment as new Amazon CEO is a clear indication that Amazon is moving from its online retailer avatar to a fullyfledged cloud computing internet company.

Tom Johnson, chief transformation officer at global marketing firm Mindshare said, “Jassy’s background in steering AWS shows just how top of mind those services are to Amazon’s business

strategy.

It’ll be interesting to see how that affects their strategy and balancing that priority with a growing ad business and the commerce behemoth,” he said.

Under Andy Jassy’s leadership, Amazon has signed major customers, including Verizon, McDonald’s, and Honeywell.

Silicon Valley startups have long relied on AWS, and the division’s annual revenue grew 37% in 2019 and 30% in 2020, making it a major contributor in making Amazon a tech market leader.

Jeff Bezos in a note to employees posted on Amazon’s website, wrote, “As Exec Chair I will stay engaged in important Amazon initiatives but also have the time and energy I need to focus on the Day 1 Fund, the Bezos Earth Fund, Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and my other passions.”

The precious metal may still rise despite the 25% jump in 2020.

Bitcoin’s market capitalization, which is calculated by multiplying the price of the total number of coins in circulation, is $575 billion.

According to JPMorgan, Bitcoin would have to soar by 4.6 times in order to match the $2.7 trillion of private sector gold investment.

Bitcoin’s volatile value makes it hard to use as a traditional portfolio diversification tool.

According to JPMorgan strategist Nikolos Panigirtzoglou the current Bitcoin market is ‘overheated.’

“The valuation and position backdrop has become a lot more challenging for Bitcoin at the beginning of the New Year,” the strategist wrote.

The JPMorgan strategist suggested a method to get the true value of Bitcoin: using its intrinsic value. Gold has an intrinsic value that does not match its market

value. The intrinsic value of gold is based on what it costs to mine the precious metal. Bitcoin is also ‘mined’ using complex algorithms and machines, which use electricity.

According to Panigirtzoglou, it would cost Bitcoin miners roughly $10,000 to get a single Bitcoin for their efforts.

Panigirtzoglou is of the opinion that the $146,000 price point can be a long-term target as the cryptocurrency’s volatility fades and people get used to the idea of investing in a digital currency.

Skeptics view Bitcoin’s rally as somewhat reminiscent of 2017.

They see it as an asset with no intrinsic value and a bubble that’s going to burst at any point.

geosynchronous Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared satellites, the Pentagon announced Jan. 4. The DoD’s contract is for U.S. Space Force which is currently in the process of acquiring five OPIR satellites – three from Lockheed and two from Northrop Grumman Corporation.

Lockheed Martin’s contract by the U.S. Space Force covers manufacturing, assembly, integration, testing, and delivery of the three Next Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared satellites by May 2028.

The company will also provide ground mission sensor processing and unique software platforms to the service branch and support NGG SV rocket integration as well as launch and early on-orbit checkout efforts, the DoD said Monday.

“The primary mission of [NextGen OPIR] satellites is to provide initial missile warnings of a ballistic missile attack on the U.S., its deployed forces, and its allies, according to Space Force budget documents.

“Next-Gen OPIR Space enhances detection and improves reporting of intercontinental ballistic missile launches, submarine launched ballistic missile launches, and tactical ballistic missile launches.”

The Space Force said the Next-Gen OPIR satellites will expand and eventually replace the coverage provided by existing Space Based Infrared System satellites, which were also manufactured by Lockheed Martin. The first NextGen OPIR satellite could launch as early as 2025.

For instance, a research project conducted in 2018 by Two Heads Consultancy with Kelly Services, found that two of the top four reasons job seekers gave for choosing one organization over another were the opportunities for training and development, and for promotion within the role.

This leads to a vicious cycle of unsatisfied employees constantly searching for external positions, which can only harm productivity, particularly in a virtual workplace.

If a silver lining can be found in the past year, it would be that the ramifications of the pandemic have led to a shift in approach. Many HR leaders are recognizing the need to look deeper at the skills within their company. Whether a result of external hiring freezes due to COVID-19 uncertainty, or simply the need to discover ‘hidden’ talent, businesses everywhere are now reassessing their talent management strategies. So in a time defined by disruption, how exactly can businesses begin to engage their teams?

Prioritizing talent management With many organizations looking externally to fill new vacancies, they are completely disregarding that one of best ways to motivate their employees to develop is to provide them with the opportunity of a new role. By not utilizing the resources you already have within a business, the time and money you have invested in hiring and training employees will simply be wasted if they have to leave to pursue further professional development.

Despite this, recent research suggests that fewer than 1 in 20 organizations immediately look internally when filling a new position.

Therefore, to increase engagement from employees, HR professionals must highlight the role of Talent Management, specifically concerning internal mobility, performance management and employee development. This plays a crucial role in empowering and therefore retaining talent, because, in reality, people join organizations, and stay, if they see they will have the opportunity to grow and learn new skills. Having these opportunities made more apparent needs to be hardwired into the fabric of the whole company to ensure employees receive the development they expect.

This is especially true within a remote workforce, where complete visibility has been replaced by a reliance on endless Zoom calls and back-and-forth emails.

With many businesses failing to successfully record the performance of their workforce, it’s easy to make employees feel pigeonholed within certain teams, divisions, roles or functions, without having the opportunity to show what they might be able to contribute elsewhere.

To ensure our people remain motivated, there needs to be increased transparency across the business and this needs to be made visible to business leaders, managers and HR teams alike.

So, when new vacancies arise, everyone involved in hiring and assessing potential candidates is aware of who may be appropriate within the business, ensuring internal talent is recognized in a meaningful way.

A focus on technology According to a report from McKinsey & Co, responses to COVID-19 have sped up the adoption of digital technologies by seven years, fuelled by a need to adapt to a virtual world. There is no reason, then, that businesses should be unable to utilize the correct Talent Management technology that can effectively provide all the information they need to successfully match the people and skills already within the business, against the vacancies that arise.

Despite this, according to Actus research, two in three employees say it’s easier to find a new role elsewhere than within their own company.

Given the challenge of new starters getting up to speed effectively in a hybrid or remote environment, this seems ludicrous. The problem is often compounded by performance data being siloed, or failing to be transparently recorded or shared. This means that employees who are suitable to take on new challenges within a business become invisible, due to a flawed and outdated system.

However, with the right technology which supports employees, records performance conversations, and makes the necessary analytics available to managers and the recruitment team, internal transfers could become seamless. In turn, this increases employee engagement by identifying internal development opportunities for the candidates who deserve it.

Changes to Corporate Culture Managers discouraging their employees from exploring other opportunities within the organization for fear of losing their best performers is an all too common practice. With management often rewarded for having a high performing team, it leaves great talent unable to test themselves elsewhere. Ultimately, with high performing employees restricted to a particular team, this can gradually disengage employees as they are left unmotivated and unchallenged.

With so much potential going unleveraged, it is no wonder that so many employees seek new challenges outside of their current organization.

If we are to seek to increase engagement and retention rates, internal mobility should be viewed as a key component by keeping the skills, capabilities and knowledge of existing employees, propelling their growth and development as opposed to hindering it. To make this possible, the entire corporate culture must shift so that managers are rewarded for producing talent that benefits the company as a whole, as opposed to simply within their particular team. To avoid information being siloed, managers should be encouraged to share all data and analytics of their best performers, as well as assist them in looking for new challenges and opportunities that will empower and keep their best talent motivated.

Employee Engagement within the new norm Employee engagement is a vital energy source and one that HR teams must nurture and tap into. As the workplace continues to adapt and evolve with these tumultuous times, business leaders need to consider whether their culture supports the growth of their employees and nurtures talent by making performance visible and ensuring those who are capable of progressing further internally are encouraged to do so.

Automakers steer toward our gleaming autonomous future By: Christy Gren Much like the flying car, the autonomous car has appeared frequently in sci-fi movies and TV shows. Who could forget Bruce Wayne’s favorite toy – the Batmobile. In Gotham, the autonomous car is so reliable that Wayne often gets criticized for his own driving skills. Minority Report took the concept of self-driving cars to a whole new level. The driverless cars in the sci-fi movie could travel not just traditional roads and highways, but also vertically -- even delivering a passenger right outside of their apartment.

Like sci-fi movies, the automotive industry doesn’t seem to shy away from tackling ambitious ideas. This has much to say about the current state of transportation as it did about the future. Meanwhile, the coronavirus crisis has strengthened the use case for automation in industries where the technology is being built.

There’s never been a better time for medicines and groceries delivered by a self-driving car than now. While the economic fallout from the Pandemic will undoubtedly shutter automotive factories around the globe due to numerous reasons to scrap their self-driving skunkworks.

This hasn’t stopped ambitious automakers from using the current crisis as a spring to turn the self-driving car race into a marathon. Even before lockdowns and social distancing, self-driving car engineers were hard to work dialing back on expectations and pushing promised timelines. In early 2018, General Motors Co. promised to have a fleet of self-driving taxis running around in San Francisco by 2020.

While it unveiled an autonomous car in January, GM’s launch date for taking on passengers is yet to be fixed. Similarly, Daimler backed away from its promised timeline of 10,000 self-driving cars on the streets by 2020. The nation’s most valuable automaker, Tesla Inc., too seems to have backed out on a promise. The automaker hopes to fulfil its vision of delivering 1 million autonomous robotaxis on the roads by 2021.

Carmakers set their sights on 2021 for initial deployment – and this was before the COVID-19 crisis that forced companies to recalibrate their timelines.

As of now, the only platform to carry passengers in fully autonomous vehicles is Waymo, a subsidiary of Google parent company Alphabet.

The company began testing autonomous vehicles in 2009 and has since logged over 10 million road miles in 25 cities.

The company has obtained 2,118 patents for self-driving technologies by partnering with Fiat Chrysler, Jaguar Land Rover, Lyft, and Honda Motor.

Members of the public have also been testing commercial selfdriving service, Waymo One, since 2018.

Next in line is Amazon’s self-driving company Zoox. The company took the wraps off its first robotaxi in December.

The carriage-style car can travel up to 75 miles per hour and can run up to 16 hours on a single charge.

Amazon founder and former-CEO Jeff Bezos previously expressed enthusiasm around the self-driving car industry and the company has been using autonomous trucks to haul cargo. Over time, Zoox could fit into the retail giant’s sprawling logistics networking, and make its last-mile delivery cheaper and faster than ever before.

With Uber drivers delivering food and freight in addition to driving passengers, the use case of autonomous cars becomes even stronger.

Humanity has now come to a “moment of truth,” United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said in his State of the Planet speech in December. “COVID and climate have brought us to a threshold.”

The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached record levels in 2020, hitting 417 parts per million in May 2020.

The last time CO2 levels were consistently at or above 400 parts per million was around four million years ago, during the Pliocene era, when the world was 3ºC warmer and sea levels were 10-25 meters (33-82 feet) higher than they are today.

“We are seeing record levels every year,” says Ralph Keeling, head of the CO2 programme at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, which has been monitoring CO2 concentrations from the Mauna Loa observatory in Hawaii since 1958. “We saw record levels again this year despite COVID-19.”

In the three years since 195 nations pledged in Paris to cap global temperature increases at 2 degrees Celsius, a few things have become unmistakably clear.

The world must quickly phase out the fossil fuel industry. And that is no longer enough.

We need CO2 removal strategies that also act as an essential bridge to a clean-energy future.

“CO2 removal has gone from a moral hazard to a moral imperative,” says Julio Friedmann, senior research scholar at the Center for Global Energy Policy at Columbia University.

There are several reasons to put this at the forefront of our climate strategies and targets. With economic recovery, gas-to-coal switching and low fossil fuels will drive energy sector CO2 emissions 1.4 gigatons (4.4%) higher year on year in 2021, according to S&P Global Platts Analytics.

We are clearly not moving with the right momentum to reduce carbon dioxide emissions – or even in the right direction.

“The longer we have postponed drastic reductions, the more daunting the challenge of achieving those reductions in the necessary time frame,” says Erica Belmont, a University of Wyoming engineering researcher.

Even if the developed part of the world switched to renewables, poorer nations would likely to fall behind in the race. CO2 emissions from some industries, such as steel and cement production, which contribute significantly to the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, will be challenging to eliminate. The cheapest (and cleanest) kinds of sustainable aviation fuel still cost roughly twice as much as conventional jet fuel.

Sea Change The good news is that CO2-removal technology has advanced at a far greater speed than expected in the last decade, says Stephen Pacala, a Princeton professor who oversaw a study of carbon remove strategies published by the National Academics of Science.

The cost of machines that directly capture CO2 from the atmosphere have fallen by two-thirds or more. Advances in research and developments from industrial carbon-capture has helped push for innovation in efforts to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Climeworks builds giant machines that capture carbon dioxide from the air and store it in solid state underground to create negative emissions. The air-captured CO2 can also be upcycled into climatefriendly products such as carbon-neutral fuels and materials, or delivered to high-profile clients, such as The Coca-Cola Co., who then use it to put bubbles in fizzy drinks. In September 2020, it partnered with Audi to build the world’s largest direct air capture and storage facility for converting atmospheric CO2 to rock in Iceland. This facility will remove 4,000 metric tons of CO2 from the air and mineralize it underground. Audi removes 1,000 metric tons of CO2 with Climeworks.

Climeworks plans to expand its projects and make CO2 direct air capture technology more accessible to private individuals, businesses and organizations.

The No. 2 U.S. automaker said it is “doubling down” on connected electric vehicles and plans to invest $22 billion in electrification through 2025.

The amount is nearly twice what it had previously committed to electric vehicles. Additionally, Ford would invest $7 billion in autonomous technology development over a period of 10 years through 2025 – nearly double of $5 billion from 2021 forward.

“If EVs continue to quickly gain favor, especially with commercial customers, we want to be clear that we will not cede ground to anyone,” Chief Financial Officer John Lawler told reporters on a conference call.

The legacy automaker is keen to increase its battery capacity and add more electric vehicles in its future portfolio. “We are accelerating all our plans,” said Ford chief executive Jim Farley on the conference call with analysts.

The $22 billion EV investment does not include potential investment in battery production. Ford will make more announcements soon around its EV partnerships.

The listed price carries a premium to the underlying value, which represents the strength of retail demand for Bitcoin. In “premium trade,” accredited investors sell into the market after the lock-up and benefit from Bitcoin appreciation and the premium, and often reinvest all or part of the proceeds into new trust shares. Without strong retail demand, the premium would fritter away.

Another thing in favor of Bitcoin’s popularity is that the young generation is not keen on gold investments and is open to Bitcoins. IT gives them freedom from institutional control of investment assets and a lot more flexibility.

Last month, financial advisory firm deVere released the results of a survey of over 700 of its millennial clients, which showed two-thirds of them prefer Bitcoin to gold as an investment.

The 2020 rally of Bitcoins was driven more by institutional hedge funds, family offices, and money managers. Hileman of Bitcoin.com expects to see continued buy-in from retail and Wall Street investors going forward, rather than corporates.

This does not mean that gold investment is over. Gold’s role as a store of value is well entrenched in the world economy and investors and advisers recommend that Bitcoin complement the yellow metal rather than replace it.

For now, the impact on gold flows is negligible. The market sentiment at the moment favors Bitcoins with premium trading freeing money for investment.

Funds will rush into industry ETFs when markets get wobbly, and the commodity price starts to move up again.

Bitcoin can be used by corporates to offset the liquidity risks associated with fiat currency. Foreign exchange risk leaves a company vulnerable to fluctuating conversion rates and fees. Bitcoins could serve as a “bridge asset” on the balance sheet.

Its bearer nature, ease of transfer, smart contract functionality and growing support for Bitcoins from financial institutions, will lead to some interesting developments in the years to come.

Some investors’ sentiments on Bitcoins;

Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio, who has spoken out against Bitcoin in the past, has softened his stance, and said in an AMA on Reddit this week that he thought bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies had “established themselves” over the last 10 years and were interesting “gold-like asset alternatives.”

In a long Twitter thread, investor Raoul Pal said, “My hunch is BTC is a perfect collateral layer but ETH might be bigger in market cap terms in 10 years.”

Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic adviser for €2.3 trillion fund manager Allianz, tweeted last week he had sold Bitcoin after holding for two years, and that his decision was “not based on any deep analysis.

German media giant Bertelsmann has invested in a crypto fund managed by venture firm Greenfield One.

Skeptics view Bitcoin’s rally as somewhat reminiscent of 2017. They see it as an asset with no intrinsic value and a bubble that’s going to burst at any point. JP Morgan’s CEO, Jamie Dimon, once called Bitcoin a fraud worse than the tulip bulbs craze in the 17th century.

In the Nevada desert, a cryptocurrency magnate hopes to turn the ageold dreams of a futuristic “smart city” into reality. Blockchains LLC wants to build a smart city within its 67,000 acres of land in Reno’s east. The company’s chief executive, Jeffrey Berns, is working with local authorities over grants among other things to get the green light on similar projects in the state.

According to documents floated by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Blockchains LLC will break ground on a Tom Wiscombe Architecture and Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects (EYRC) designed smart city in Nevada in 2021.

The city’s governor Steve Sisolak will give it, and similar projects across the state, the power to form their own governments.

The initiative to build a 68,000-acre innovation park in Nevada based around blockchain was announced in 2018.

These “Innovation Zones” across the state will draw technology giants, and thus, give them the power to set up their own government. In return for the autonomy, the Nevada state government will forgo the tax abatement and incentive packages typically offered to big businesses to come and set up in the state.

Sisolak first broached the idea during his State of the State address on January 19. It was later confirmed that the bill was to be rolled out soon. According to internal documents reviewed by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the alternative form of local government is needed to encourage tech bigwigs to take over local governmental duties from their respective counties. Each of these Innovation Zones will be overseen by a board of supervisors, with the company taking over the developments as well as a say in who gets appointed as the supervisor.

The development work extends to futuristic work; relating to renewable energy research, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, blockchains, robotics, and similar research. Companies applying to set up an Innovation Zone through the Governor’s Office of Economic Development would need to acquire/own and be intent on development at least 50,000 acres of the city or town. These companies will need $250 million on hand, along with a plan to invest at least $1 billion in the area over the coming 10 years.

Jeffrey Berns has donated $50,000 to Sisolak through Blockchains LLC for the cryptocurrency-powered smart city. The company also donated another $10,000 to Sisolak’s 2018 election campaign. If
