The Horse Report

You’re never too old to hit the trail Have you ever envisaged what life must have been like on the great stock trail rides of yesteryear? Could you picture yourself travelling the limitless plains country, on your own horse, camping out each night for five to six weeks. Well thanks to Lindsay Collins and Richard Capper, now is the chance to be part of the Great Geriatric Trail Ride which will cover 1600 kms (1000 miles) sometime between March and April this year. “The reason why we hadn’t was because we are both old enough to know better and silly enough to do it any way,” Richard said. “Well one thing led to another and we thought that there might be a few more people out there that might like to join us.” As the name of the ride suggests, these two are no spring chickens with Lindsay Collins born in Victoria in 1926. Though most of his working life was spent at the craft of coachbuilding, he has also worked as a drover, stockman, carpenter and builder. His droving days included bush droving bringing mobs of cattle from Queensland

Lindsay Collins on Chief

Richard Capper on Lily

down to Wodonga. He has also spent a large part of his life writing about his experiences and has four books in print. Richard Capper was born in 1946 and has been trail riding since he was 12. At 17, he undertook a 960km ride with a mate across Victoria. He has taught himself how to make saddlery but horse riding and saddlery took a bit of a back seat after that as family and work got in the way but he still managed rides up into the high country . In brief the proposed ride will take place in the area north of the Murray River in an area bounded by Barham in Victoria

to south of Broken Hill then south to Wentworth and back to Barham. The route is being determined by where it will be possible to camp horses and people every 40 or 60 kms. Bring your own horse, saddlery and bedroll whilst the food would be provided from a mobile kitchen. Depending on the numbers of riders so the level of comfort in camp will go up and the cost per rider will come down. With a large number of riders taking part, there would be motor vehicles to move the camp, transport horse feed and the riders' swags (belongings), rousies to erect and take down

the horse yards, tents and so on. The duo will consider any one who wants to join the ride for a shorter period. A mobile kitchen and staff to provide hot breakfasts and evening meals, with sandwiches carried by the riders for mid-day dinners. With enough numbers, the organisers are hoping to take along a mobile shower and toilet vehicle. Richard and Lindsay would like to hear from anyone who might be able to assist with either a kitchen trailer or shower/toilet block unit. They have already arranged for a rider skilled in saddlery repairs to accompany the ride and are hoping a rider with farriery skills will join in. Minimum age for a rider is 18 or 16 if part of a family group and there isn’t any upper age limit. To register your interest, email info@thousandmiler.net or by mail to The Thousand Miler,C/O P.O. Box 546, Lavington,NSW 2641. Include an A4 size stamped self addressed envelope for reply. For more information, visit www.thousandmiler.net

Australians go the distance in Abu Dhabi Australia’s junior endurance riders have finished among the medals at the sixth FEI World Endurance Championships for Juniors and Young Riders held at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in December. Allix Jones won the individual silver medal, riding Castlebar Moonlight, finishing just 12 seconds behind the winner Martin Sterling from Uruguay. However there was an Aussie connection with the winner as his horse, Vendaval, is owned and trained by Australian endurance rider Margaret Wade. Stirling finished the 120-km ride in 5:18:51 hours riding on an average speed of 22.581 km per hour. Jones’s time was 5:19:03 hours with an average speed of 22.567 kph. Another rider from Uruguay, Hunter Toro finished third to help his country to gold in the team event. Allix was very pleased with the silver though she would have loved to be the world champion.

Pictured at the medal presentation of the sixth FEI World Endurance Championships for Juniors and Young Riders are, from left, Ian Williams (Director, FEI Non Olympic Disciplines), Meg Wade (recipient of the FEI Against All Odds Award), and Australian team members Alexandra Toft (Qld), Georgia Toft (Qld), Brooke Warner (NSW) and Allix Jones (individual Silver medallist).

“Vendaval was too good,” she said. Australia also brought home bronze in the team section, finishing behind Uruguay and France. The Australians who placed included Allix Jones on Castlebar Moonlight, Brooke Warner on Kunama Safira and Alexandra Toft on High Society Te. The Australian rider results were:

second place - Allix Jones and Castlebar Moonlight (11yo AA mare) time 5:19:03 ; 16th place - Brooke Warner and Kunama Safira (9yo Arab mare) time 5:55:52; 37th place - Alexandra Toft and High Society te (8yo P/A gelding) time 6:55:44; Unfortunately Georgia Toft and Bremervale Arrogance,( 12yo Arabian Gelding) were eliminated at the end of Leg three. The championship is held every

two years in different parts of the world. The championship attracted 77 riders from 29 countries with 48 finishers. In Australia, the annual Tom Quilty Gold Cup will be held this year at St Helens in Tasmania from June 8 -10. Protect your horse from annoying insects BY WILD HORSE AUSTRALIA

What are Wild Horse Australia Insect Repellent Horse Rugs? Wild Horse Australia Insect repellent horse wear employs a specialised process that binds an active ingredient, Permethrin, into certain fabrics for long term protection. Most direct sprays also contain this ingredient, however with this patent pending technology the Permethrin remains in the fabric instead of on the skin.

How long will it last? Permethrin is a water soluble repellent and cannot remain long term in fabrics without the unique Wild Horse Australia binding process. The EPA has approved their products to last for 25 detergent washes or six months of full time weathering. Latest test results revealed that even after 100 detergent washes up to 91.7% of the Permethrin still remained in the fabric. Proving the success and longevity of this unique binding process.

What is the difference between Wild Horse Australia Insect Repellent Horse Rugs and standard Horse rugs? Standard horse rugs do a great job at shielding your horse from the harsh Australian weather, but do

little on their own to stop insects from biting through or around untreated fabrics. Insects also like to harbor under standard rugs, around the belly area. Here they can remain undetected, as well as having direct access to a ready meal. Wild Horse Australia Insect Repellent Rugs offer protection from the elements as well helping to prevent insects from biting or annoying your horse.

Which insects does Wild Horse Australia Insect Repellent Horse Wear offer protection from? Their products are effective against all Permethrin sensitive insects. Permethrin and its derivatives are the most widely used form of Insect Repellent.

Which insects pose the biggest threat to my horse? Many biting insects cause annoyance, discomfort & pain to our horses but disease carrying insects pose the greatest threat. They include Sandflies which can carry Leishmania, ticks which can carry Lyme disease and last but not least, the mosquito, which is known to be the number one culprit for spreading debilitating and fatal diseases. How do these products work against Permethrin sensitive

insects? Permethrin, the active ingredient, works differently on the many different species of insects we have here in Australia. Some insects prefer to stay away from Permethrin, so are therefore repelled by it. Other insects are not directly repelled but once coming into contact are rendered incapable of biting, bloodsucking or feeding as Permethrin works on the part of the insect's brain that enables them to do so. Is it safe? Large percentages of what we spray on our horses, to protect them from annoying & disease carrying insects, are absorbed through the skin and held internally until it can be expelled and detoxified by your horse, re-applications increase these levels. Studies of dermal exposure, using urinary bio-monitoring to determine the level of Permethrin absorbed into the body from treated fabric, have shown that treated garments yield Permethrin exposure levels up to 182 times lower than exposure levels measured via a standard spray method. In summary, these impressive results confirm that with this unique process Permethrin can be bound so tightly into the fabric

fibres ensuring that it remains in place. Preventing high levels of absorption through the skin or allowing excesses to enter into the environment.

Is there a range of products available with Insect Repellent treatment? The Wild Horse Australia Insect Repellent range now offers a large range of products, including Rugs, Combos, Rugs with attached Hood & Ears, Leg Protectors, Belly Protectors, Fly Masks & Fly Veils. These great fitting products combined with their unique treatment, have proven results for horses who are annoyed by insects.

Where can I get Insect Repellent Horse Wear? Wild Horse Australia are the specialists in Insect Repellent Horse Wear. They are a dedicated company that has spent ten years researching and perfecting this very unique product. Previously recognised for their well fitting designs, now more renowned for their research and advancements in technology with fabrics which benefit the health of horses.

Gelding your horse things to consider By DAVID LOVELL BVSc Redlands Veterinary Clinic Last season's foals are now approaching weaning and 50 per cent of them will be colts so I thought it timely to offer some thoughts on turning your colt into a gelding. Should I geld my horse? Of course you should! Tractability, temperament, and ease of management are the most essential and desirable traits contributing towards making horse ownership pleasurable and fun. By nature, colts and stallions are going to be more dominant and aggressive and pose never ending management problems when exposed to other horses. An oft presented dream is that it would be nice to have a foal by him! Once upon a time perhaps but in this day and age, owning and maintaining a horse is such an expensive undertaking that if you are contemplating breeding a mare, then it becomes mandatory

that you utilise the very best genetics available. Mare owners now have easy access to fresh and frozen semen and so the very best bloodlines are readily available. The only instance where I feel this to not apply is if you intend racing the colt. In this case, I recommend leaving him intact until it becomes obvious that the horse is not readily going to progress and race. I say this, not because stallions are necessarily better racehorses than geldings, and certainly not because of the potential riches as a sire if you happen to end up with a champion. I believe that racing is an extremely difficult venture and any potential benefits that male hormones may offer, should be retained. Male hormones have no effect on speed, and little effect on ‘the will to win’, however, they do contribute to strength and aggression and sometimes this can be a benefit. When should I geld my horse?

Gelding of a colt should take place as soon as possible

As soon as possible! The testicle does not really become active until the horse matures and this becomes progressive through the yearling, 2 3 year and older stages. That being said, there is always some effect even in younger horses and so if the goal is to achieve a nice placid individual, then geld the horse as soon as you can. There are risks and complications that can occur associated with gelding and these have more bearing on when to do him, rather than leaving him entire to help him grow. Testosterone, the male hormone, has absolutely no effect on growth. It does have an effect on weight and mass, but not really until the horse is fully mature. The four major complications associated with gelding are bleeding, (haemorrhage), intestinal herniation, (evisceration), post operative swelling, and infection. The younger the horse, in most cases the lower the risk of swelling, infection and bleeding, but unfortunately, the risk of evisceration is higher in the very young animal. Unfortunately, if this happens, it is very likely that you will lose the horse as dealing with such a complication requires immediate urgent action, and a bit of luck. I have castrated horses over the whole spectrum from day old to 25-years-old and all can be easily achieved with perhaps slightly differing techniques. The decision of when to geld will vary with circumstances and desired outcomes but I would recommend as young as possible. In the real world, the majority of horses will be gelded either as weanlings, 6 - 12 months, or yearlings, 15 - 20 months. Once a colt heads towards his second summer and is approaching 2-years-old, the testicles are really starting to kick in and the horse tends to start

really acting like a stallion and so become more difficult to manage. Another determining factor is the presence or otherwise of two descended testicles. Occasionally horses are born with one, (or rarely both), testicle retained in the abdomen. Removal of this testicle is a very major surgery that needs to be done in a hospital. It can be difficult in some horses to detect the presence of both until the testicle starts to grow as the horse matures and so this can be a reason for delaying castration until a bit older. How to geld? Most operations will be performed by a veterinarian. The manner of the surgery is often a personal preference of the vet but owners should consider their options. Certainly if the colt is well grown, easily controlled and the testicles are obviously present, standing castration under sedation and local anaesthesia is by far the easiest for the veterinarian, and also the horse as the stress and risk of a general anaesthetic is avoided. Most young horses however, are not well enough handled and so the majority are gelded under short general anaesthetic. Modern anaesthetic agents are very predictable and make this procedure very safe. With both methods, most veterinarians simply apply an instrument called an emasculator to the cord which crushes the blood vessels and cuts off the testicle. The wounds are left open for drainage. At Redlands, our preferred technique is to operate under general anaesthesia but we use a technique whereby we actually tie off the blood vessels, eliminating the risk of haemorrhage and we actually also tie off the opening into the abdomen via the inguinal canal.

Horse owners encourage to fill in Hendra virus survey Horse owners are encouraged by the NSW Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) to participate in a survey on the Hendra virus. The horse owner survey is being funded by the Queensland Centre for Emerging Infectious Diseases, Biosecurity Queensland and is supported by NSW DPI. The survey aims to gain a clearer understanding of horse owners' attitudes, opin-

ions and horse management practices relating to Hendra virus. The information will be used to assist NSW DPI and Biosecurity Queensland to plan more effective Hendra risk management and related communication strategies should another outbreak occur. All information provided is in confidence and no individual data will be released. People have until February 28, 2012 to

have their say. There are no current cases of the Hendra virus in NSW. Throughout 2011, 10 horses on eight properties died as a result of the Hendra virus. These cases were concentrated in the NSW localities of Wollongbar, Macksville, Lismore, Mullumbimby and Ballina. The survey can be accessed at: www.agriculture.nsw.gov.au/info/hendra

Post-op observation and exercise are keys to recovery   From page 12

The actual skin wounds are still left open for drainage but closing the tunic virtually eliminates the risk of evisceration and so we feel it is a much safer procedure. Post operative management: Fortunately the majority of procedures are performed with minimal complications. Post operative management is very important. Obviously herniation and haemorrhage, if they are going to occur, will be present in the first hours, possibly up to 48 hours,

post operatively. The horse should be under very close observation during this time as either are critical emergencies and need to be dealt with quickly. Swelling is more likely to occur from 5 - 14 days afterwards. This is usually progressive and the earlier action is taken to deal with it, the better the outcome. Exercise is by far the best way of controlling swelling and we advise that weanlings if possible, and certainly yearlings and older, are exercised twice daily at the lunge and maintained in a larger paddock the rest of the time, to encourage movement.

"become a gelding" and recover. Once the horse is older than two, the testosterone levels have risen and the muscle and physiological function of the horse have become dependent on its presence. The removal of the testicles can result in some "withdrawal" symptoms and place a stress on the horse. Also, if the colt is mature, sperm can remain alive stored in the secondary sex glands and it is theoretically possible for the "gelding" to impregnate a mare for up to six weeks post operatively. We recommend horses be given three months off after castration for recovery.

Infection is rare, and usually follows excessive swelling and so it is very important to deal with swelling quickly. Occasionally the end of the cord can become infected. This is rare, but very serious and requires further surgery.. There is always some discharge around the incision and down the legs and simply spraying water form a hose is the best way to deal with this. Flies are rarely a problem in the inguinal area. Very importantly, particularly if the horse is older or mature, it is best to give the horse a period of time after the surgery to

Learn how to develop a bond with your horse By LINDA PARELLI “I have just bought a new horse and want to make sure I develop a good bond and relationship with him can Parelli techniques help?” - Mary James. This is a wonderful thought your horse will really appreciate it! Horses don't care how much you know until they know how much you care but befriending horses is often unsuccessful because we are two completely different species. Horses are prey animals and people are predators. A human is not something a horse would go out of his way to be friends with and yet the relationship we've shared with them for thousands of years is quite extraordinary, if not always fun for the horse. When you are able to overcome the prey-predator barrier your horse's confidence will soar, making him more responsive and safer to be around. Think of it this way... horses don't bite or kick people they like and trust! The Prey-Predator Barrier When horses get scared, they're

not afraid you're going to hurt them, they're afraid you are going to kill them. It doesn't seem logical to us, but prey animals are 'programmed' that way. They've survived for millions of years by reacting faster than, out-thinking, outsmarting and out-running predators. So when it comes to the horsehuman relationship, even if you are a vegetarian, you are still a predator species and your horse knows it. The reason we make such a big deal about this is because many people tend to get mad or frustrated when their horse misbehaves, but often they have no idea what is driving that. For many horses, it is mortal fear that is making them bolt, rear, bite, kick, prance, headshake, buck, not stand still, spook, shy, etc., and when the human gets annoyed it throws fuel on the fire. The horse is already scared, they have a predator on their back and now that predator is mad... or scared. Either way, the feeling that is transmitted to the

horse scares the life out of him. One of the first things Parelli students learn is to not blame their horse for how he's behaving and to take control of their own emotions. You have to get calm and objective. Then you need to know what to do to convince your horse that even though you look and smell like a predator, you would never act like one. Here are some ways you can prove this:  Never punish your horse because prey animals do not understand punishment. They live in the moment and they react to their feelings about a situation and then behave as their instincts tell them to. Here's what to do: say to yourself “How interesting!” and then think about what may be causing him to act this way.  Never tie his head down with draw reins or martingales. There is a reason that head comes up and you need to find out what it is. Horses don't resist for no good reason.  Never strap his mouth shut.  Never yank on the reins or hold them so tight that he feels no way out. Horses are naturally very claustrophobic so they fight to get free. There is a natural way to collect horses on shorter reins and there are far better ways to control a horse than pulling back on the reins.  Never trick him by hiding your halter behind your back or using treats to lure him into places he doesn't want to go. Your relationship has to be based on trust.  Patience, patience, patience. When your horse doesn't do what you want right away, calmly and sensitively repeat it and repeat it and repeat it until your horse is calm or change your strategy in case you weren't being very clear. Pat Parelli says it best when he quips “You're doing great... I've never seen it take longer than two days!” If you adopt the two day attitude you'll slow down, be less intense and your horse will feel better!  Look first at yourself. A good teacher blames himself before he blames his student and knows that it's devastating to the learning process for his student to feel fear. Not many people are naturally patient, but horses can

teach you this. By breaking things down into simple steps and giving your horse time to think and pause for a moment after he does something right. This develops confidence like you can't believe and some horses need a lot more waiting time than others before they can relax. You are your horse's teacher and many horses come to school confused, worried, sometimes terrified.  Learn the Parelli Seven Games. By studying horses, Pat Parelli observed seven distinct games they play with each other to establish friendship and dominance. He adapted them so humans could use them to establish successful relationships with horses, starting on the ground and moving on from there. These Seven Games are so powerful they go straight to the psyche of the horse quickly breaking down the fear barrier... provided an attitude of love and understanding is used. If not, they'll go through the motions but hold on to their primitive fear. When a horse doesn't want to be with people or he's always tense, you need to spend a lot of undemanding time with him, just hanging out with him like his horse buddies do. Horses that are acting out of self defense feel that everything is pressure... catching, leading, saddling, bridling, lungeing, riding. In order to get him to let down and relax around you, you need to spend a lot of undemanding time with him and gradually start asking him to do things, in fact, your horse will probably start wanting to play with you. And if you have a more confident horse who is already looking for action, start playing with him right away and think about ways you can keep it fun. Classical, simple, natural and correct PETER ACTON Dressage Specialist Student of world Masters Nuno & Joao Oliveira of Portugal Classical Horses Australia method of training is classical, it's simple, it's natural and correct. Based on over 2000 years of horsemanship, which in the last century, has led to the developed awareness of the Classical Principles. Over the past 30 years, I have trained with leading instructors in Australia and overseas, developing my own personalized teaching and training techniques along the way. In 1986, I met Nuno Oliveira and was tutored by him in Brisbane. Nuno Oliveira was the greatest exponent of equestrian art in the 20th century. In his training method he applied the totally indispensable classical (general) princi-

ples that were discovered and formulated by the other great and determined people of the previous centuries and took the art form to an all time high. After 2000 years of gathered knowledge, Oliveira had practiced and perfected the latest and most effective developments in this unique art form. In 1990, I spent time in Portugal with Joao Oliveira, son of the maestro, riding twice daily at Quinta Do Brejo. On returning to Australia , I opened a school of Classical Riding, giving lessons up to seven days a week and offering as many as five school horses specially trained by myself for the benefit of students. Since 1986, I have immersed myself theoretically and practically in the art of Classical Equitation. When you choose to use the Classical principles to educate your horse, you are, quite sim-

ply choosing to create a winwin situation everyday you work with your horse. Building relationships and educating animals as whole hearted, sensitive and obliging as horses are, casts a duty on the rider always to seek the horse's willing participation without damage to the horse's emotional and physical state. A badly- trained rider will always make a horse unhappy and sore. A well-trained rider will always know how to place the animal's emotional and physical well-being as a priority.

Therefore I invite all people wishing to achieve the horse’s trust and obedience, who are interested in the best for themselves and their horses to embrace this wonderfully holistic and caring approach to equestrian pursuits. I make the point that correct Classical training will produce excellent results for all horses of any discipline, be that competitive dressage, hacking, show-jumping, pony clubbing or pleasure. 2. Suppleness/Relaxation/ Losgelassenheit The second level is normally referred to as relaxation and/or suppleness. The German term Losgelassenheit encompasses both words. Let's talk about relaxation first. Lack of relaxation causes tension in the movement of the horse and this often leads to a loss of rhythm. Again all the rules are interconnected. Tension also causes resistance be it to the aids or the bridle. However tension is often unavoidable in the initial training of a

movement as the horse struggles with a concept. Through repetition, and the rider being persistent and consistent, the horse finally understands what is required, learns to accept the task and should relax within the exercise. A well-trained horse will show a willingness and relaxation through all movements. Now let's talk about suppleness. This term refers to both lateral and longitudinal flexibility/suppleness. Lateral suppleness is the ability of the horse to bend and flex around the rider's inside leg so as to conform to a circle or when lateral placement is required such as is required in leg yield. This ability to bend and flex also generates the outside rein and the carrying power of the inside hind leg of the horse creating roundness or the second element of suppleness, longitudinal submission. Longitudinal submission refers to the horse being loose and flexible, a swinging back with a soft poll and jaw. This creates swing within the paces. Watch a well-trained horse and a tense stiff horse perform the same movement. The relaxed horse springs from leg to leg lifting its whole body in the exercise whilst the tense horse shuffles from leg to leg showing no expression and even often appears lame 3. Contact/Anlehnung This refers to much more than just the connection on the reins between the rider's hands and the horse's mouth. It includes the horse's acceptance of the rider's legs, seat and hands . The horse should move forward into the rider's hands whilst maintaining an elastic soft poll and jaw. The weight of the connection on the reins is created by having the reins at the correct length so as when the rider's driving aids are applied the horse pushes forward into the rider's hands thus creating contact. The reins are not taken backwards to create contact. This pushing forward into the rider's hands creates roundness as it should raise the base of the horse's neck if the horse is longitudinally submissive (see rule 2). He should stay soft in the rider's hands as he lifts his back and becomes round. I personally think that the roundness of the horse or the horse carrying himself on the bit is a product of the first two rules. I never ask a horse to come on the bit if the tempo is incorrect or there is no lateral submission. If I have a problem with the roundness of the horse I look to tempo first and then lateral and longitudinal submission.  The next three rules, next issue.

The Horse Report WORKING YOUR HORSE ONLINE

3 Re x A in us Ch ing F tralia am utu n pio rit n y

BY KEN FAULKNER Using angles to help the horse learn to lead When teaching a horse to lead, the quickness of our release is the most important ingredient. We can stand in front of our horse slightly off to one side and take up the feel of the lead rope. If the horse resists we need to hold the feel but not pull as this will only cause more resistance. Hold the feel until the horse gives (which may only be an inch or so), and then release immediately. Timing is critical here as not releasing quickly enough means the horse won’t get the immediate reward for doing the right thing. Ask for a little more each time until your horse understands to move forward to get release on the lead. Standing slightly off to one side rather than directly in front of your horse will make this task a little easier for your horse to learn. Once your horse learns to follow the feel of the lead you can ask him to move around you in circles, between you and objects or over jumps. The possibilities are endless, only limited by your imagination. Using the lead to improve communication to all parts of the horse. You can use the lead and the principles of feel and timing to work with other parts of your horse. For example with an unhandled horse, you might choose to pick up your horses feet by making a loop at the end of the lead and placing it around your horses fetlock. Then you can lift the horses leg using the lead. You can check the softness of your horse and your level of communication by standing in front of your horse off to the side a little about four feet down the lead, and ask your horse to move just one front leg laterally. Try this until you can ask for a whole circle with the hind-legs relatively still and the front legs stepping around and crossing over laterally. Using feel and timing to help the horse yield to a feel. When we ride we’ll want our horse to be able to move away from the pressure of our legs and hands, so in this exercise we’ll teach our horse to yield from pressure in various part of his body to prepare for when we we’re on his back. To yield your horses forequarters, stand beside your horse with your bellybutton facing towards the horses eye. Rub your horse before you start. Stand straight and tall with energy in your body and with one hand holding the side of the noseband and the other resting on the horses neck apply gentle pressure on the nose until your horse takes a step to the side. Immediately reward the horses try by stopping and standing relaxed and giving the horse a rub. If the horse does not respond from gentle pressure you may need to increase the pressure in four stages until he takes a step. (These four stages are called phases and mimic the behavior of horses when interacting with each other). Reward immediately and start again, asking for a little more try from the horse each time until you can complete a full circle with the hind legs remaining relatively still and the front legs walking around in a circle. If you need to go to a high phase (phase4), be sure to stop and start again giving your horse a chance to respond on the first phase of gentle pressure. During this exercise, look for the horses leg which is closest to you to step across in front of the other leg, and the leg that’s further from you to step laterally and not forward. This will ensure the horse remains in a submissive frame of mind and does not become defensive. The same principle is used to yield the hindquarters. Stand beside your horse with your bellybutton facing the horse’s hip. Using the lead rope, ask you horse to turn his nose slightly towards you. Using gentle pressure place your other hand near your horses flank and apply pressure until your horse step laterally. The hind leg closest to you should step in front the other one. In this exercise the front legs should move only minimally and the hindquarters should step around in a circle. Using this method of increasing pressure (phases), we can teach our horse to move virtually any part of his body. Backing up from the nose or chest, lifting his legs, moving sideways or lowering his head are just a few. For further information Ph 0427 732 394 or visit

The Horse Report

Horses that ‘freak out’ By LINDA PARELLI You've seen them, maybe you own one - they are uncontrollable, not all the time but often enough to cause you concern. They're skittish, can't stand still, hard to lead, barging and shouldering, leaping in the air, rearing, kicking out. They act like you don't even exist. And if you ever got up enough nerve to ride, it turns out almost suicidal. Fighting the bridle, leaping, plunging, trying to run off and rearing when you hold them back. But you hold them back for all you're worth because you know if they get the jump on you, they're off at full speed, blind with crazy and you're on top pulling on the reins with all your might and it's as though they can't feel a thing. It's terrifying. I've been there. This may seem very extreme to those of you who've never had this experience. Those who have experience this know exactly what I'm talking about. I thought I was pretty confident with horses until I met this horse.

That was when I knew I didn't know enough, but I didn't find anyone who could help me make a real change with the horse until I met Pat Parelli. And even then, I really didn't realize how much of the horse problem was me. Why horses go crazy around people? Most of these horses are just fine when with other horses but the moment the human comes into the picture is when the ‘crazy’ side comes out. These horses aren't crazy and they don't have a mental condition. They are just terrified of people and can't tolerate any mistakes or attitudes of force. These horses take a lot of understanding. Even though we think we have a domestic horse, inside every horse (even a gentle horse) is the wild primal horse. After 6,000 years of riding and genetic development in breeding horses, we have managed to develop some strains that are less sensitive (drafts) and some that are super sensitive (Arabians, Thoroughbreds) and everything in between. Mostly,

it's those that are more toward the hot blood that people have trouble with. (The equine at the other end of the spectrum: the smart, less sensitive guy who's more inclined to be lazy such as mules and Warmbloods… that's another article!) The more sensitive and highlystrung the horse, the more difficult they are for people who don't know enough. I thought I could handle spirited horses! It took an ex-racehorse that really scared me on several occasions to make me realize that I was not as confident as I thought and that I didn't have what it took to deal with it. It never occurred to me that this could change. I thought that high-spirited horses would always be hard to control. Why are you part of the problem? Because you are not part of the solution. If your horse keeps acting like

this around you, it's because you are not actively solving it! It's much easier to blame the horse - “He's screwy. She's a nutcase. She has hormonal problems. He was abused.” It doesn't matter how the horse got like this, it's just a hypersensitive horse. They cannot be expected to behave quietly and perfectly no matter what you do, no matter how clumsy, insensitive or uneducated/unsavvy you are. Once I accepted that I was part of the problem, that's when things changed. Horses are capable of making phenomenal changes in a very short time. If only people could do that!

The Horse Report

Perseverance leads to understanding between horse and rider   From page 23

It took a horse like my Thoroughbred, Regalo, to make me look beyond the English riding world and go to Pat Parelli for advice. But I had my back to the wall. Did I feel like giving up? Oh yeah… often because frustration and failure surfaces a little too often for comfort. But I didn’t because I believed that it would work out in the end and I was prepared to do what it took. That's the difference between failure and success with a horse like this. If you have a horse like this, it's an invitation to learn more and get better quick! Why? Because this horse won't give you much time to learn, he won't tolerate your mistakes. That's why it's such a major decision to decide if you are willing enough to learn. If you are not prepared to go out of your way to learn at full speed about horsemanship, if you don't think you'll be able to get through the emotional swings of elation and frustration, don't go there. Quit now. But if you don't quit, if you do decide to give it your all no matter what, the one thing that

you'll end up appreciating more than anything is how much your horse is willing to forgive. This horse is really going to teach you how to let go of your own ego and really learn the meaning of what it takes to gain rapport. Essentially, you stop making them wrong for being different from you. I did whatever it took. But that's me and I'm not saying it should be you. You might not be prepared to stretch yourself like I did. The important thing is you know who you are and do what is right under the circumstances. The worst thing you can do is pretend. Why riding is often worse than on the ground Mostly it's because when we are on the horse, they can feel everything. Every time we tense up, lose our balance, are late on our timing, etc it upsets the horse much more when he can feel all this along with his reaction. When our feet are on the ground, loss of control doesn't seem to feel nearly as scary. For this reason it's easier to get along with these horses on the ground, and the better the rela-

What does ‘less sooner’ really means? Less sooner really means doing more about it sooner! Most people are too slow for the horse. By the time the horse has done something you're in correction mode. Now you're going to have to do 10 times as much because

you're late. If you can react the moment something starts to happen, you'll be more effective. Don't be late, don't be early, be right on time. You'll get better and better at this as you progress. Basically, your horse will start to experience consequences every time it goes right brain (not punishment, but a job etc.) and find out that when he's left brain everything is safe and comfortable. It won't take too long before the right brain times get shorter and shorter and they go from right to left brain more and more quickly.

tionship gets the less reactive they are when you start riding. You're going to have high highs and low lows because every now and then, just when things were going fantastic, you'll have a setback. While it feels like you're back to square one, you're not. Play the ‘friendly game’ (desensitizing) or get your horse left brain again and move on or start fresh the next day. Accept the challenge and keep learning at full speed. Don't let yourself feel defeated, just because it got a little tough. It doesn't mean you aren't capable of getting past it. If you expect some difficult times it will help you manage it emotionally much better than if you think every day is going to be wine and roses! Hang in there; it's just a temporary thing.

They run a number of shows each year including two Grand National qualifiers and the Queensland Rising star. The Qld Country Hack championships are held in Maryborough each year in September and the prestigious SHCQ Inc Horse of The Year is held in October. Winners and runners up at these two events then gain an invitation to compete at SHC Grand Nationals run by the Australasia governing body and held in NSW. The running and preparation involved in staging these events only happens thanks to hard work and dedication from the committee and also from our wonderful sponsors. Warwick to host 2012 Polocrosse Nationals The cream of the country's polocrosse players have marked April in their calendars for the 2012 Barastoc Polocrosse Nationals, to be held in Warwick, Queensland. Warwick is set to host approximately 500 players and more than 800 horses at the 2012 National Titles from April 23 to 29 this year, and plans are well underway for the event which will attract teams from each state and territory. Warwick Polocrosse Club president, Les Fraser, said after successfully staging the two Polocrosse World Cups in 2003 and 2007, the Warwick Club again took up the challenge to stage Australia's most prestigious polocrosse event. “Warwick as host club and Queensland as host state will work in conjunction to put together the best Nationals ever witnessed,” Mr Fraser said. “All the action will take place at Morgan Park - Australia's finest polocrosse facility on the edge of the historic town of Warwick.

“The relationship kindled between the Warwick Polocrosse Club and Barastoc through our association in the running of the 2007 Polocrosse World Cup at Warwick, continues to thrive. “We are pleased to announce that Barastoc have been successful in acquiring the naming rights to the 2012 Australian National Polocrosse Titles.”

Team Penning action heads to the NSW Far North Coast Team penning has hit the Northern Rivers and is certainly here to stay with the third event set to provide some action, adrenaline and thrills for the competitors and spectators. Alstonville show grounds will come to life with Northern Rivers Team Penners hosting their next event on Sunday, 12th February, 2012, starting at 8am, prize money and prizes are up for grabs on the day. Billed as the fastest growing horse sport in the world, team penning involves three riders entering the arena and having to separate three color nominated cows from a herd of 30, muster them to the other end of the arena and then penn them in a small enclosure. While this all sounds easy competitors must complete this task in under two minutes. So get ready and saddle up folks, bring the children as this sport is for the whole family, come join the fun, and the horse action. If you just want to come and watch, it's lots of fun. The Alstonville Show Society will have plenty of food and refreshments on the day and for the spectators entry is free. The Northern Rivers Team Penners club is always happy to welcome new riders or teams, if you've never Team penned before we'll show you the way! Nominations close 5th February, 2012, please contact Jane Jackson on 0414 340 451 or email nrtpa@yahoo.com.au or check out our website www.wix.com/nrtpa7/nrtpa for nomination forms or further information.

Teams will be vying for national polocrosse supremacy from the home state Queensland, NSW, Victoria, South Australia, the Northern Territory, Western Australia and Tasmania, in 12 competitions including men's, women's, mixed, intermediate, junior's and masters. There will also be an Under 12 team exhibition from all states, which is non-competitive.

The Polocrosse Nationals are held every two years in a different state. Queensland won the men's competition at the last nationals in Queensland in 1998, which was also held in Warwick. For more information on the Nationals please contact Les Fraser on 0419 714 545, or visit www.warwickpolox.com.au

The Horse Report NATIONAL RODEO ASSOCIATION TOUR SERIES 2012 - Tweed Coast The National Rodeo Association started its 2012 series on the Tweed Coast with the Cudgen Leagues Club Bull and Bronc Spectacular in January. While the bulls dominated the cowboys in that section, the cowboys had beeter luck against the

broncs with the Saddle Bronc Ride seeing five qualifying riders on the night. Finishing first was Warwick cowboy, Michael Maher , second, former Rookie of the Year Joel Hill, third Beaudesert cowboy David Mawhinney and equal fourth was Peter Carswell

What goes up must come down as Chris Bateman discovered at the Tweed Coast rodeo last month

and Peak Crossing cowboy Trent Jackson. This month the series continues at Oakey, Mulgowie, Urbenville, Gympie, Harrisville and Alstonville. For details visit the NRA website, ww.nationalrodeoassociation.com.au
