Vet-formulated equine joint supplement Provided by HEALTH WITHIN Vets have kept this secret for years and now it's finally available to every horse owner. For decades, experienced equine vets have had access to a powerful combination of ingredients to support joint health and mobility in horses. These ingredients-Rosehip, MSM, Glucosamine, Chondroitin, Green-Lipped Mussel, and Turmeric-have typically only been available individually or combined via vets through expensive, practitioner-only formulas, making them less accessible to the everyday horse owner. Now, for the first time, Health Within brings them together in one potent, vet-formulated supplement available directly to horse owners: Equine Rosehip and MSM Ultimate Joint Support. This advanced daily powder is a complete, high-quality joint support solution that was once reserved for veterinary circles. It delivers the same premium-grade ingredientswithout the inflated price tag or need for complex dosing protocols. And why shouldn't every horse owner have access to this kind of care? Horses aren't just athletes - they're companions, partners, and family. Providing them with effective joint support shouldn't be exclusive or out of reach. Many horse owners wait until stiffness or lameness becomes visible before acting-but joint health should be supported long before deterioration becomes painful or performance is affected. That's where Ultimate Equine Rosehip and MSM steps in-not just as a remedy, but as a proactive daily strategy to maintain flexibili-
It’s important to provide your horses with effective joint support. ty, mobility, and long-term soundness. At the core of the formula is Rosehip powder, known for its rich natural vitamin C and antioxidants. Although it's enjoying its moment as a trend in equine health, Rosehip alone isn't enough to protect and restore joints. It needs to work in synergy with proven co-factors. MSM, a natural sulfur compound, helps reduce inflammation, support soft tissue repair, and promote collagen. Glucosamine and Chondroitin work together to protect cartilage and improve joint lubrication. Green-Lipped Mussel powder, packed with omega-3s, helps reduce stiffness and promote smoother movement.
Lastly, Turmeric, with its potent curcumin content, provides additional anti-inflammatory support. "It's honestly mind-blowing to see all these powerhouse ingredients in one supplement. Ultimate Equine Rosehip and MSM is one of the most impressive joint support formulas I've come across," said Samantha Reid, Nutritionist. For a limited time, Health Within is offering 15% off your order at www.healthwithin.com.au using the code "Ultimate". Ultimate Equine Rosehip and MSM Support your horse before they show signs. Because prevention is the ultimate cure.

Holistic equine nutrition vs regular equine nutrition By JEN THACKERY HolisticAnimalStudies.com In the realm of equine care, nutrition is a cornerstone that significantly influences a horse's overall health, performance, and well-being. While traditional or regular nutrition focuses primarily on providing essential nutrients to meet basic dietary needs, holistic equine nutrition embraces a more comprehensive approach, considering the horse as a complex, interconnected organism. REGULAR NUTRITION Regular equine nutrition typically revolves around the formulation of diets that meet foundational requirements for energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. This approach often involves: Nutrient Balancing: Regular nutritionists analyze the horse's diet based on established guidelines to ensure it contains the appropriate ratios of carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and micronutrients necessary for maintenance, growth, or performance. Feed types: It generally emphasizes the use of commercial feeds, grains, hay, and supplements tailored to specific life stages or activities, such as dressage, jumping etc. Focus on physical aspects: The primary goal is to satisfy physiological needs, which can lead to overlooking other factors such as emotional health, digestive well-being, and environmental influences. HOLISTIC EQUINE NUTRITION In contrast, holistic equine nutrition transcends mere nutrient balancing by incorporating a broader perspective that values the synergy between body, mind, soul and environment. Key features include: Whole horse assessment: This philosophy recognizes that a horse's health is influenced not only by what it eats but also by the horse’s lifestyle, physical condition, emotional state, and surroundings. Holistic nutritionists assess the horse as a whole, tailoring diets to individual horses while considering their unique circumstances. Natural ingredients: Page 4
Holistic nutrition promotes thriving in all aspects of a horse’s life.
Holistic approaches often prioritize natural, minimally processed feeds and supplements, favoring whole foods over artificial additives or fillers. This focus aims to promote optimal health through high-quality ingredients that enhance digestion, immune function, and vitality. Balanced well-being: Holistic nutrition seeks to foster a harmonious balance between physical health, mental clarity, and emotional stability. Practices may include integrating herbs, forage variety, and forage-based feeding strategies that cater to the horse's instinctual behaviors and preferences. Environmental consideration: Holistic nutritionists often consider the impact of the animal's environment on its health. Stressors such as stalling conditions, social interactions, and exercise availability/turnout are factored into dietary recommendations. THE INTERSECTION While both approaches aim to nourish the horse effectively, the distinction lies in the scope of their perspectives. Regular nutrition addresses the mechanics of feeding-ensuring that the horse receives adequate nutrition for survival and performance. In contrast, holistic equine nutrition elevates the conversation to encompass the overall quality of life and well-being of the horse, integrating physical, emotional,
and environmental considerations into diet formulation. Choosing between holistic equine nutrition and regular nutrition can significantly influence a horse's health and performance. Holistic nutrition offers a more inclusive and mindful pathway, promoting not just survival but
thriving in all aspects of a horse's life. Our new Advanced Holistic Equine Nutrition certification course can be found at www.holisticanimalstudies.com We also offer a horse owner's basic nutrition non-certification course.

Reducing the risk of colic in your horse Provided by FEEDXL Colic – it’s a word that sends cold shivers up every horse owners’ spine, and for good reason. Colic is the single biggest killer of horses worldwide. With their gastrointestinal tract the way it is, horses are simply prone to developing all sorts of problems with their gut. But…there are certain conditions that will increase the risk of colic. So there are things we can do to reduce the risk of colic in horses. Research presented at the European Equine Health & Nutrition Congress, March 2017 (by Lindroth et al) found the following areas of concern are key to reducing the risk of colic in horses: - Change of water source and/or a change of roughage more than twice (though the time period is not specific) doubled the risk of colic. Horses fed concentrates three times per day had twice the risk of colic compared to horses not fed any concentrates (amounts were not specified though) Here is the really useful bit: For every 1 kg increase in roughage (forage) per 100 kg bodyweight fed per day, the risk of colic dropped by three times. For every 1 kg increase in muesli feed (composition not specified but would think it contains grains) per 100 kg of bodyweight, the risk of colic increased by three times. Which makes a whole lot of sense, given the more forage we feed and the less concen-
THE SIGNS OF COLIC
When you suspect colic in horses contact your vet. trate, the closer we are to a horse’s natural diet. And when we can keep them closer to their natural diet, their gut and overall health is almost always much better! So more hay, less grain, less risk of colic! Colic in horses is a generic term that encompasses a combination of signs alerting to abdominal pain. It can vary from mild discomfort that resolves on its own to cases more serious that require emergency surgical intervention. It can affect horses of all ages and types. There are several different types of colic in horses, all of which occur in the gastrointestinal tract. They can be divided broadly into the following categories: Spasmodic Colic, Impaction Colic, Sand Colic, Intestinal Displacement & Gas Colic. The signs of colic in horses vary from case to case, however, horses with colic display some of the following behaviours: Roll Sweat Rapid respiration Get up and down Curl their upper lip Backing into a corner Kick at their abdomen Lie down for long periods Repeatedly look at their flank Paw continuously or intermittently Fail to pass droppings for longer than 24 hours. Stand in a stretched position as if trying to urinate If you are suspect that your horse may be showing signs of colic, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Tips on what to do feeding pregnant mares By FEEDXL EQUINE NUTRITION TEAM Pregnant mares carry your hopes and dreams, be it for the next big champion or just a quiet riding companion. Here are some tips for feeding pregnant mares to keep them healthy and breeding sound, strong and athletic foals: 1. DON’T LET MARES GET FAT Mares in their early stages of pregnancy don’t need many, if any additional calories than they needed when they weren’t in foal. All mares are different, so to really know how much feed your pregnant mares need you should condition score regularly. Pregnant mares should ideally be maintained at a condition score of 6 and should not be allowed to exceed a score of 7. Having mares too fat can: - Reduce their milk production when they foal. - Put unnecessary strain on their hooves and joints, making them heavy and uncomfortable. - Lead to difficulty foaling (though this isn’t necessarily proven to occur). - Make it difficult to fall pregnant again, particularly if a mare is forced to lose weight just prior to or immediately after foaling. As mares progress through their pregnancy their requirement for energy and protein does increase, so you may find you need to feed additional feed to maintain their body condition score. For more information on Condition Scoring visit www.Feedxl.com 2. DON’T LET MARES GET SKINNY A pregnant mare shouldn’t be allowed to drop below a condition score of 5. Mares that are any lighter will fall away quickly after foaling, reducing the body energy and protein reserves for milk production and also switching off the reproductive cycles, making it difficult or impossible to get in foal again. If you notice their ribs becoming easier to feel or their topline and rump starting to fall away, you will need to increase the amount of feed they are getting. Because so
much room is taken up in the mare’s abdomen late in the pregnancy, you will likely need to feed high energy grains or high energy fibre feeds that use ingredients like sugarbeet pulp or soybean hulls to allow them to increase their energy intake enough to hold their body condition. High fat feeds are also useful for late pregnant mares. 3. MAKE SURE MINERAL AND VITAMIN REQUIREMENTS ARE MET Meeting the mineral and vitamin requirements of pregnant mares during early and late pregnancy is crucial to: - Promote the sound development of their foals. - Prevent deficiencies like iodine that can affect the thriftiness and survival of newborn foals. - Prevent problems in the mares like retained placenta and the associated laminitis. - Maintain a strong immune system in the mare and foal. - Maintain the long-term health and soundness of the mare for future reproduction. While pregnant mares can often be maintained on good quality pasture with little additional feed, without supplementation of minerals, a pasture-only diet will almost certainly have quite dramatic deficiencies of copper and zinc and depending on the geographical location may also be very deficient in calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iodine and selenium. If the mare doesn’t receive the additional minerals she needs to support herself and
her growing foetus she will draw them from her own body reserves. However if she is required to do this for many consecutive breeding seasons it will eventually have implications for both her and her future foals’ long-term health, soundness and athletic ability. One study has shown that foals born to mares early in her breeding career have less structural problems than foals born later in that mare’s life, which may indicate that over consecutive pregnancies, mares can run out of reserves of minerals that directly impact the sound development of her foals. FeedXL allows you to quickly and easily determine your mare’s requirements for these critical minerals as well as vitamins and helps you make sure the diet you are feeding is meeting her requirements through all stages of pregnancy. 4. FEED HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN During pregnancy a mare requires high quality protein to meet her own requirements and those of her growing foetus. If the pasture your mare is on is of low quality (for example sub-tropical C4 Type pastures, or pasture that has matured, gone to seed or browned off), add some high quality alfalfa/lucerne hay to raise the quality of protein in the forage component of her diet. 5. MAKE THE MOST OF PASTURE IF YOU HAVE IT Pasture is an excellent source of energy and protein. Feeding a diet that relies largely on pasture has two main positive effects. The first is it will make for an economical diet, with pasture being one of your cheapest feeds available. Secondly, a high fibre diet will keep your mare’s gastrointestinal tract healthy, reducing the risk of problems like colic (something to be avoided in a pregnant mare). To really know what is in your pasture and what your mare needs in her diet have your pasture tested and enter the results into your FeedXL account. For more information visit www.feedxl.com

Should I feed my horse from the ground? By RANVET There has always been debate over the best way to feed your horse. Is it best to feed on the ground or is a hanging feeder a better option? Below we have a look at the pros and cons. BENEFITS OF FEEDING ON THE GROUND: Horses graze naturally for hours a day with their heads at ground level, so this is their natural foraging habit. Eating with their head down is the natural alignment for a horse spine. This promotes a health respiratory system. The grazing position allows the horse’s respiratory system to naturally drain helping to prevent unwanted health conditions. It assists better digestion, chewing with their head at ground level promotes saliva production helping the digestive process. Saliva also acts as a natural buffering agent to the stomach’s natural, but potentially harmful, acids. This lowers the chance of choke for those horses that tend to eat a bit quick. Placing some larger rocks, bricks or even a salt lick block in the feeder can also help to slow down the fast eater. Feeding on the ground can be essential for veterinary reasons as well. Horses that have recently had surgery or are prone to respiratory infections may have to be feed with a ground feeder, to allow proper drainage of their sinuses and respiratory tract.
Page 10
Horses graze naturally with their heads at ground level & helps digestion
The use of hanging feeders may be essential in many circumstances
WHEN MAY A GROUND FEEDER NOT BE PRACTICAL? Ground feeders can tip over if you have a horse prone to putting their foot in their feeder and tipping it over Clip on feeders can be a better choice for use in stables and yards, so feeders aren’t getting knocked over or stepped on in smaller spaces. In wet weather conditions, it can be a cleaner option to feed with a feeder on the fence to
help keep the feed up and out of the mud. Fence feeders may be easier to move if you are doing a lot of paddock rotation. No matter what type of feeder you use, it does seem over the long-term feeding on the ground is a better option for you horses’ health. However, having the availability to use a hanging feeder on the fence or stable wall is a good option for some horses and in certain circumstances.

Why Hay Cubes can a beneficial feed By HI FORM AUSTRALIA PTY LTD Studies show that hay cubes can be beneficial for horses because they offer a consistent nutrient profile, reduced dust content, easier portion control, and can be particularly helpful for horses with respiratory issues due to their minimal dust particles, making them a good choice for research where standardized feeding is crucial; however, some research also notes that horses may eat hay cubes faster than long-stem hay, potentially leading to less chewing and potential digestive concerns depending on the horse's individual needs. Uniform nutrient profile Little variation occurs from one load of forage cubes to another load of cubes, especially when they are from the same manufacturer. Most cubes are made to certain specifications and offered to the consumer with established nutrient values. Generally, manufacturers must provide guaranteed levels of protein, fat, and fiber. Less forage wastage Horses generally clean up hay cubes more readily than they do conventional hay. Because of their incredibly mobile lips, horses can easily separate the tender, palatable leaves from the stems in conventional hay. The stems are sometimes deemed undesirable by horses and are frequently left behind. Feeding studies reveal that as much as 20% of conventional baled hay may be wasted when fed, and forage wastage can reach an alarming 40% when large round bales are provided to horses. Feeding hay cubes in a container, such as a bucket or tub, also keeps them from becoming trampled and unpalatable, though horses are likely to retrieve spilled cubes off the ground. Portion control When feeding cubes, it is easier to control the amount of forage the horse consumes. Horses should be fed by weight and not volume. Forage cubes make this more manageable because the weight of cubes is more consistent than the weight of traditional hay. A bucket of cubes one day will weigh similarly to a bucket of cubes the following day. On the contrary, four flakes of hay may weigh significantly more or less from one day to the next. Weight of traditional hay depends on a variety of factors: size of flakes, density of flakes and type of hay (legumes tend to be heavier than grasses). Less dust Hay cubes contain little dust, so they represent a healthy dietary choice for horses with respiratory problems such as heaves or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(COPD) that are triggered and aggravated by environmental dust and particles. Even fleeting exposure to organic dusts can trigger bronchospasm and airway inflammation in affected horses and ponies, which leaves them with breathing difficulties. Ease of storage Forage cubes are more dense than traditional baled hay. A 50-pound bag of hay cubes takes up far less space than a 50-pound bale of hay. Approximately three bags of hay cubes fit in the area of an average-sized, square bale of hay. Therefore, forage cubes are ideal for owners with limited forage storage space. Will travel Because they are condensed, hay cubes are easier to take on the road. Horse owners can pack more of them in less space when traveling to horse shows, rodeos, parades, or trail rides. Using cubes for horses that travel frequently is a smart management technique, as cubes require less room, possibly avoiding a change of forage when away from home. Chewable Horses grind long-stem hay with the teeth in the back of their mouths, called cheek teeth or molars. Horses sometimes have misalignment of their molars, which precludes them from properly masticating stemmy forages. Hay cubes are easier for these horses to chew. Cost On a pound-for-pound basis, hay cubes are more expensive than traditional hay. Increased cost can be attributed to processing and expenses associated with shipping cubes from the point of production to the point of sale. The price of a 50-pound bale of top-notch alfalfa hay varies throughout the country, but likely does not come close to the cost of a 50-pound bag of alfalfa cubes. Interestingly, pure alfalfa cubes are usually cheaper than timothy or alfalfa/timothy cubes.
Excessive intake Most horses cannot be given free choice access to cubes as they sometimes can with medium-quality long-stem hay. Research has shown that voluntary intake of alfalfa cubes was much greater than for the same alfalfa fed as long-stem hay. Controlled feeding ensures that horses do not become overweight or incur digestive problems such as colic. Palatability Most horses that refuse hay cubes do not have an issue with the taste of the cubes, but rather the texture. Some hay cubes are not designed to crumble easily. Horses must bite them with their incisors, the teeth in the front of their mouths, and then advance the pieces to the rear of their mouths, usually with their tongues. At first, some horses object to using their incisors for anything other than tearing pasture grass. The majority of horses, however, have few problems in figuring out just how to break the cubes into bite-sized pieces. Speed of intake Mature horses may finish a serving of hay cubes more quickly than an equal weight of traditional hay. Without as much “chew time” horses may become bored and look for other outlets in which to release pent-up energy. Therefore, horses should be given plenty of time to romp and wander in pastures as well as time under saddle or in harness, if appropriate. Choke The incidence of choke or esophageal obstruction increases when cubes and pellets are fed. Often, however, choke has little to do with the feed form and is related more to the speed with which the feed is eaten. Hay cubes are appropriate for horses of all ages. Depending upon the plants from which the cubes are made, they are even suitable for broodmares and young horses because of their high nutrient values for energy, protein, and calcium. Feeding recommendations •Always feed by weight not volume. •Horses require a minimum of 1.5% of body weight (kg) of forage per day. •For example 4.5kg per day for a 300kg pony or 7.5kg for a 500kg horse. •Forage requirements depend on pasture availability, horse’s weight, age, size, condition and work level. •Fresh drinking water should always be available. •Consult a qualified nutritionist to develop a complete feeding plan specifically for your horse. Understanding different types of hay BY LARISSA BILSTON (BAGRSC HONS), Equine Nutritionist, Farmalogic Hay and fresh grass are both essential forage sources for horses but they differ in their nutritional composition due to processing and storage methods. These differences can significantly impact a horse's diet, particularly for those with conditions like laminitis. This article examines common types of hay, their nutritional profiles, and considerations for feeding specific horses. Types of hay for horses Grass Hay Grass hay is the best substitute for pasture during drought, dry summers or for horses in stables, yards or kept on overgrazed paddocks. - Meadow Hay is widely used in southern states and is made from various combinations of naturalised grasses and sometimes native grass and legume species. It varies widely in nutritional value, often providing moderate protein and energy. - Ryegrass Hay is a palatable, nutrient-dense feed with moderate to high protein (12-18%) and energy levels. However, its high ethanol-soluble carbohydrate (ESC) and starch content makes it unsuitable for laminitic horses. In some regions, ryegrass may contain endophytes, which can cause health issues like ryegrass staggers. - Rhodes Grass Hay is typically low in ESC and starch, making it a safe option for horses prone to laminitis, insulin resistance, or equine metabolic syndrome (EMS). Rhodes grass has a moderate protein content (8-12%) and high fibre, promoting digestive health. Rhodes hay is a common type of grass hay available in northern states. - Teff Hay has become a popular choice for metabolic or overweight horses. It is frequently low in sugars and starch, has moderate protein and typically is high in fibre. However, like many warm-season grasses, it can contain moderate to high levels of
Page 16
oxalates, which may interfere with calcium absorption and contribute to conditions like nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSH) or "big head disease" if fed long-term without calcium supplementation. While it is palatable and digestible for most horses, testing for oxalate content and balancing the diet with calcium supplements is crucial when using Teff hay as a primary forage source. - Jarra Hay is grown in the Northern Territory (NT) and is popular for its palatability with moderate protein (8-12%) and energy content. Jarra hay is low in oxalates, unlike many other tropical grasses such as Humidicola or Buffel grass. However, its nutrient levels can vary depending on maturity at harvest, so testing is recommended to ensure it meets the horse's dietary needs. Cereal Hays - Oaten or barley hay is made from green oats/barley harvested before the grain matures. Cereal hays are commonly used in Australia but should not be the sole forage source for horses without grazing. They are highly palatable and provide moderate energy and protein (5-10%) but are often high in carbohydrates, unsuitable for metabolic horses. Quality can vary widely depending on plant maturity and seed fill at harvest. - Straw is made from the dry stems of a mature cereal crop (wheat, oats, barley or
rice) cut and baled after the grain has been harvested. It is high in fibre but low in protein (2-5%) and energy. Straw is sometimes recommended for weight loss, used to substitute up to 50% of hay intake but its sugar and starch content can vary, so testing is recommended before feeding. Legume Hay Legume hays are richer in protein and energy than grass hays, making them ideal for topping up the diets of performance horses, growing foals, and lactating mares. - Lucerne Hay is the most popular legume hay fed to Australian horses. It is nutrientdense with high quality protein (16-25%) and calcium levels. It is usually low in ESC and starch, making it a suitable source of quality protein for horses with metabolic issues. Whilst beneficial in many horse diets, lucerne should be limited to 20% of the total daily intake. For horses with a sensitive gut, lucerne's richness can lead to digestive upset. - Clover Hay has a high protein content (1520%) and is often baled as a ryegrass and clover mix for cattle. Clover hay can be too rich for horses and some contains phytoestrogens or mycotoxin producing endophyte fungi. It should only be used strategically in small quantities to boost protein and calcium levels. Continued page 17

Know the importance of feed testing From Page 16 The nutritional value of hay is influenced by plant species, maturity at harvest, and growing conditions. Key nutrients to test for include: * Digestible Energy (DE (horse)) is a value given in MJ/kg, an indicator of the amount of 'fuel' the hay contains. Younger, leafier and cool-season pasture hays (such as ryegrass) are higher in energy than hay from mature (stalkier) plants and warm-season species. * Carbohydrates. Water Soluble Carbohydrates (WSC) include simple sugars (monosaccharides such as glucose and fructose; and disaccharides such as sucrose and maltose), short-chain polysaccharides (oligosaccharides and fructooligosaccharides), and fructans. Ethanol Soluble Carbohydrates (ESC) measures only simple sugars and short-chain polysaccharides. Starch is a carbohydrate made up of complex polysaccharides which are digested in the foregut. Hay high in ESC and starch increase the risk of laminitis due to their influence on blood insulin levels. * Crude Fibre (CF%) is an indicator of the total amount of indigestible fibre in the hay. This is fermented by microbes and is an important component of gut health. Acid Detergent Fibre (ADF) measures cellulose and lignin levels whilst Neutral Detergent Fibre (NDF) measures cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Hay made from more mature plants is usually stalkier, and higher in indigestible fibre. * Protein (CP%) supports muscle development, body maintenance and overall health. While high quality protein is essential for young, growing horses, broodmares and horses in intense work, excess protein can lead to unnecessary nitrogen excretion, which stresses the kidneys. Lucerne is considered a quality protein source for horses because it is rich in the amino acids that horses are lacking. * Mineral level analysis of hay, especially when it forms a dominant part of the diet, ensures supplement requirements can be
accurately calculated. Look for analysis of the macrominerals: calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, sodium, chloride, potassium and key trace or microminerals: iron, copper, zinc, selenium, iodine and manganese. Plant maturity at harvest The maturity of plants at the time of harvest is a significant factor affecting hay quality. Leafy Hay (Early-Maturity) - Plants harvested at an earlier stage of growth retain more leaves than stems, which are richer in nutrients. - Early-maturity hay has higher protein and digestibility but lower fibre, making it more energy-dense. Mature Hay (Late-Maturity) - Plants allowed to grow to full maturity have more stems and seed heads. This results in lower protein but higher fibre. The energy content depends on the amount of filled seed heads (grain) and remaining leaf. - Mature hay is often coarser and less digestible but may be better for horses requiring low-calorie diets, such as those at risk of laminitis, provided the carbohydrate levels are in the safe range. Safe hay for laminitis-prone horses Metabolic dysregulation (insulin resistance) is the primary cause of laminitis, which is triggered a spike in blood insulin caused by eating food high in sugar and starch. Forage for horses prone to laminitis requires constant, detailed attention to sugar and starch
levels. 1. Ideally, choose hay which has been analysed and has a combined ESC + Starch value of less than 10%. 2. Avoid high production grasses such as ryegrass and do not feed cereal (oaten, barley, wheaten) hay. 3. If carbohydrate levels of hay are unknown, soak in warm water for 30 minutes or cold water for 60 minutes to remove soluble sugars. Drain and discard soak water before feeding. Soaking hay can reduce water soluble carbohydrates by up to 30%. Rhodes grass and teff hays generally have lower carbohydrate levels than cereal hays. Some meadow hay can be suitable, although this varies based on species, growing conditions, and harvest timing (hay cut in the late afternoon is higher in energy than early morning cuts). Factors to consider when buying hay 1. Nutrient analysis - where possible buy in bulk and test hay to ensure it meets the specific nutritional needs of your horse. Some large hay sellers provide test results for each batch of hay. 2. Visual and physical inspection - look for some green colour (indicating freshness) and a sweet smell. Avoid hay with mould, dust, or foreign objects. 3. Horse-specific needs - match hay type to your horse's workload, age, health condition, and metabolic status, taking into consideration the nutrient balance of the rest of the diet (pasture, hard feed and supplements). Conclusion Hay is a cornerstone of equine diets, providing essential fibre and nutrients when horses lack fresh pasture. However, its nutritional value varies widely, and careful selection is key to meeting a horse's specific needs. Compared to fresh grass, hay contains lower levels of water, vitamins and omega-3 fatty acids as these are lost during drying and storage, making supplementation essential.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.
T
he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).
While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin. Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).
KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin. It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.
Also rugging, hooding or stabling your horses between the hours of 4pm – 7am during spring and summer will limit the contact of the flies. Should your horse already be suffering from the effects of allergic skin dermatitis, ensure you use QUIT ITCH to treat and relieve the effects of insect bites. Since the 1970’s, QUIT ITCH has been an essential weapon in the fight against skin disorders in horses.
These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects. Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.
Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
As well as KURITCH as a repellent, nt, environmental management will also so assist in protecting your horse.
The effects on the horses can be dramatic. They suffer intense pruritus (itchiness) on the mane, tail, face, ears and back, resulting in biting, rubbing, hair loss, self-trauma and a change of temperament. They become miserable and irritable.
Midges breed near stagnant water. er. As they don’t fly more than a few w hundred metres from their breeding ng area, housing or paddocking your ur horses more than 500 metres from m those areas will reduce their exposure re to the flies.

Your Horse Deserves A Better Ride...OzGlide Ph: Allen 0438 637 828
What is the Oz Glide? The Oz Glide concept is unique. It is the only hitch dampening system available in Australia that offers a smooth ride in both tow vehicle and the trailer. While the Oz Glide does not change the static ball weight, it delivers a smoother ride by reducing the downward impact applied to the vehicle tow ball through its airbag and shock absorption system. As a result you will achieve a smoother and safer ride. When applied to a horse float you will have the added benefit of reducing stress to livestock. Following extensive testing the Oz Glide system has met Australian Design Rules and will provide you with an assurance of a quality product which will enhance your towing experience while delivering increased safety.

The Horse Report Better performance might be beneath your horse’s hooves Provided by EQUINEPURE PELLETS Every rider knows that nutrition, training and well-fitting tack contribute to a horse’s performance—but what about their bedding? It’s easy to overlook, yet what lies beneath your horse could affect their health, comfort and competitive edge more than you realise. Enter EquinePure Pellets, the game-changer in equine bedding. Made from 100% premium pine with zero additives, chemicals, or glues, EquinePure Pellets offer unmatched purity. Why does that matter? Because impurities in bedding—dust, mould spores, synthetic fillers—can quietly compromise your horse’s respiratory health, hoof condition and overall well-being. A horse that’s uncomfortable or struggling with low-grade health issues won’t train or perform at their best. EquinePure Pellets are ultra-absorbent, locking in moisture and odours while creating a soft, dry and dust-reduced environment. That means cleaner stables, healthier horses and happier riders. The pellets expand with water into a fluffy, cushioned bed that supports joints and promotes rest, which is especially critical for performance horses during recovery. The best part - it’s incredibly efficient. Less waste, quicker muck-outs and longerlasting bedding mean you’ll spend more time in the saddle and less time mucking. It’s biodegradable so go ahead and put it on the garden or into the compost.

Tips on maintaining your arena surface By TODD CUNNINGHAM Equestrian Land Developments When addressing your arena surface, I recommend using the flat side of an ELD Arena Spread-a-bar for everyday use. The tined side can be used when your Arena Surface may have become compacted or requires loosening up. Offset your ELD Arena Spread-abar ® to one side of your towing vehicle to ensure you are able to get right up to the edge of your arena. Each time you use your ELD Arena Spreada-bar® start in a different corner of the arena, by placing the ELD Arena Spread-abar® in the corner, you will drag out any built-up surface.. Start about ½ a metre in from the arena edge during the first round. This will help to fill in the trench that often occurs around the outside track of the arena. As you come around again you can then run the ELD Arena Spread-a-bar® up against the edge of your arena. The ELD Arena Spread-a-bar® is weighted and in-filled. This design will also pick up surface in heavier areas and distribute it to areas that have less. If you drive too fast or have it hooked up too high on the towing vehicle (lifting the front of the ELD Arena Spread-a-bar®) it will not be able to do its job and this can result in ‘speed humps’ or corrugation in your surface.
It is recommended to try different patterns each arena maintenance session. Big circles to help even out ruts along the sides. Small half arena size circles will help distribute sand if the arena has developed high and low spots. Working in figure 8 patterns to even out sections of deep footing and bare areas. Dragging lengthways will shift footing toward the ends of the arena.

Slashing can help improve pasture health Slashing horse pastures, which involves cutting down tall grass and vegetation, can be a useful management practice for improving pasture health and evenness. It can help control weeds, reduce unpalatable grass, and encourage more palatable, new growth, especially when combined with rotational grazing and proper manure management. However, it's crucial to consider timing, potential impacts on weeds and the overall health of the pasture before and after slashing. Here's a more detailed look at the pros and cons of slashing horse pastures: BENEFITS: Improved pasture evenness: Slashing can help even out grazing pressure and prevent areas from becoming overgrazed while others remain ungrazed. Weed control: Regular slashing can reduce the flowering, seedset, vigor and density of weed infestations. Reduced unpalatable grass: Slashing can help to reduce the amount of rank, unpalatable grass, encouraging the growth of more desirable, palatable grasses. Enhanced nutrient cycling: After slashing, the cut grass and other debris can be left on the ground to decompose, enriching the soil with nutrients. Increased green pasture regrowth: Slashing can remove dead standing pasture, allowing sunlight to penetrate and stimulating new growth, which can lead to improved animal performance.
Remote controlled machines like the AutoSlasher allows mowing of steep slopes of up to 60 degrees.
POTENTIAL DOWNSIDES AND CONSIDERATIONS: Weed seed spread: Slashing flowering or seeding plants can spread weed seeds. So its best to slash before plants are in flower and avoid the spread of seeds Over-slashing: Cutting grass too short can reduce leaf area and potentially stress the plant. Soil degradation: In some cases, repeated slashing can remove some of the valuable topsoil, especially if done in wet conditions or without proper soil management practices. Cost and labor: Slashing can be costly in terms of fuel, equipment maintenance, and labor.
The conventional tractor and slasher is great for mowing large paddocks.
Potential for increased weeds: Some weeds can thrive in disturbed areas, so slashing might not be the best solution for paddocks with weed problems. Proper timing: Slashing should ideally be done before the grass becomes too mature and unpalatable, and after the pasture has been rested. Other things to consider : Rotational grazing, manure management (including pickup and compost), and proper fertilization can also help provide better and more sustainable pasture management. Slashing can be a valuable tool in horse pasture management, but it's important to consider all aspects of pasture management and use it strategically as part of a broader management plan that prioritizes pasture health, weed control, and the overall well-being of the horses

Connection via trust and communication By TANJA KRAUS Connection is often misunderstood as being "wishy washy" or "woo woo" or for the 'snowflakes'. Connection as I see it is built on a mutual trust, which in turn is built on each party feeling confident in the others actions. Be it in a human to human relationship, or a human and horse or human and dog, as we spend time with each other, we build an ability to 'predict' or at the very least anticipate the others behaviour or actions in certain circumstances. Im sure you could tell me that if a balloon popped nearby, what the reaction of your partner, horse and dog would be. But predictability doesn't always build trust. In fact if you are keeping company that is reactive and unstable, you may be able to predict a reaction, but that reaction isnt necessarily one that makes you feel safe. So connection is built on not only the predictability of the actions of the person / horse / human, but in turn how those actions make you feel - safe or unsafe. So if we want to connect with our
horses, we need to learn how to be predictable in a way that builds confidence, that builds our horses trust and their desire to turn to us in times of stress. This begins with a set of boundaries, or consistent "rules". No relationships can build trust if there aren't 'rules' that each person (or horse or dog) is following. I have several basic boundaries that all horses in my presence must adhere to - Don't crowd me, dont take my hand, dont put your head over my head, dont rub on me, and dont push me - this is consistent for all horses, everywhere, and through these boundaries the horse learns that he is in a safe space. I also uphold a set of boundaries for myself, as I relate to the horse - I wont pull on a horse, I wont be agressive towards a horse, I wont crowd a horse, I will listen. I can establish these 2 way boundaries in a matter of minutes, and this gives me and any horse I work with a great starting point to work from. Connection is built through clear, consistent communication, with respectful boundaries established for both parties.

The Horse Report
Exciting new book release: Back in the Saddle By CYNTHIA TERELST Back in the Saddle captures love, loss, and life on a horse breeding farm. The book is a heartfelt secondchance romance set against the backdrop of Australia's thoroughbred breeding industry. Horses, heartache, and hopethese are at the core of Cynthia Terelst's latest novel, set on a working thoroughbred breeding farm in the Hunter Valley. This deeply emotional secondchance romance offers readers not just a love story, but an authentic glimpse into the highs and lows of rural life and the horse breeding industry. Back in the Saddle is the first book in Terelst's new Diamond Firetail Farm series, which blends real-world equestrian experiences with heartfelt storytelling. Inspired by her daughter's work as a horse midwife, Terelst captures the intensity of foaling season, the challenges of managing a breeding farm, and the emotional stakes of those whose lives revolve around horses. The book focuses on Ciaron and Taylor Murphy who have built their lives around their family and their horses but somewhere along the way, their marriage took a back seat to the demands
of the farm. Taylor's world revolves around Diamond Firetail Farm. As drought conditions worsen and foaling season promises sleepless nights, she pushes herself to the brink, determined to keep the generational business afloat. Ciaron carries the weight of their family. He works alongside Taylor on the farm and raises their children, while also, quietly wondering where their love went. When Ciaron walks away, it isn't because he stopped loving her it's because he felt forgotten. But their children aren't ready to give up. Their scheme to bring Ciaron back into the family home forces the couple to confront their shared past, their mistakes, and the question of whether love can survive hardship. "Running a horse farm isn't a job - it's a way of life," Terelst explains. "It's early mornings, long nights, and a love for horses that runs as deep as the roots of the land. But what happens when that love for the farm eclipses the love between two people? That's the question at the heart of this story." Back in the Saddle doesn't just
skim the surface of farm life - it dives into the gritty realities of working in the thoroughbred breeding industry: - Foaling Season Pressure: Sleepless nights, high-stakes deliveries, and the emotional rollercoaster of bringing new life into the world. - Drought & Financial Strain: How environmental challenges like water scarcity and rising costs test both the farm and personal relationships. - Legacy & Sacrifice: The weight of generational expectations and the personal sacrifices required to keep a farm running. "Readers will walk away not only with a love story but with a genuine appreciation for the people behind the pedigrees,"
Terelst said. What readers are saying: "As someone raised on a farm, this tugged at my heart. The pressures of drought and keeping the animals fed are real. I really enjoyed this story." "This story is captivating. I felt the devastation of the drought and rooted for them to find their way back to each other." "Watching these leads learn about life, love, and themselves was a treat. I learned so much about ranch life and the horse industry!" "It was emotional and raw, full of hurt and bitterness and then such hope and joy. And a bit of spice!"

It is with great sadness that I offer Ollie for sale through no fault of his own. Ollie is a liver chestnut, 14yr old thoroughbred gelding, officially measured at 16.3 ½ hh and is registered with the SHC and has an OTTB passport. Perfect to float, clip, shoe and show prep. He is well behaved off property and loves the show environment. He has had a successful season so far, winning at most outings. Some of his past placings include Runner Up Large Show Hack at the 2024 SHCWA Classic qualifying him for the SHC Grand Nationals. He recently competed at his first Perth Royal Show 2024 winning Novice Hack over 16.2hh and the Open Hack over 16.2hh. Due to his size, he would excel with a confident rider and handler. He will be at the SHC Horse of the Year on the 12th of October should anyone wish to view him out. Please only serious inquiries for Ollie and this is a very hard decision he will only go to the best of homes. He is located in Upper Swan. Contact: Jess Knight Ph: 0458 387 287
