2020 Remi Stud Young Rider Scholarship

The Saddlefitter Brisbane CDN Dressage Champs The Saddlefitter Brisbane CDN and Queensland State Dressage Championships event went ahead despite missing interstate competitors that couldn't attend due to border closures and COVID-19.

Queenslanders appreciated the opportunity and all the effort that went into the organisation of a brilliant show which featured a wonderful four days of relaxed and friendly competition.

The livestream produced by Equestrian Life was made possible by Dressage Queensland and Equestrian Queensland.

The footage captured key classes and entertainment and provided many spectators at home with the opportunity to still be a part of the event.

Organisers missed having major sponsor, The Saddlefitter Kathryn Sullivan-Butt, at the event however there was not a participant who was not grateful of the support shown in the past.

HOW TO MEASURE FOR A BRIDLE When you want that special look for your horse, Wagners are happy to advise on style colours, etc that will best suit your horse Wagners suggest you take a photo of your existing bridle on your horse - with a photo taken from each side and the front which shows then where the straps are sitting on your horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s head.

Wagners then know when they make the bridle what needs to be changed on the new bridle to create a better fit , ie noseband, head straps might be too close to your

horseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s eye and the noseband width might look too narrow.

The bridle needs to be done up where it fits your horse, it doesn't matter if it fits in the top holes.

They also need the noseband and throatlash done up when you take the bridle off.

You then have a few of options: The Best option is - you can send your bridle down to them and they can then take measurements and make the new bridle up for you.

Option 2 - lay your bridle out and measure it as per the bridle measurement chart pictured below.

HOW TO MEASURE UP A BRIDLE To start, place your home bridle on horse. Make sure it is fitting as you require. Do all buckles up - and make a note which holes are used. Please fit the bridle with the bits you wish to use in the new bridle. As ring sizes and shank lengths can alter the fit.

The benefits of Equine Hair Analysis

By THE NUDE HORSE There are three excellent reasons why running a hair analysis is extremely beneficial.

One – create a benchmark, meaning you can measure progress or decline from a specific point Two – find out if you horse has a toxicity or even a number of toxicities, usually heavy metal burdens Three- see nutritional gaps, either from dietary short falls or a toxicity that may be reducing the uptake of minerals you are feeding.

Tissue uptake from minerals, including heavy metals is not the same as the results from a blood test.

You can have high circulating minerals, yet there can be very little utilization, the body can send these to the tissue including the hair rather than use these.

This can occur when the mineral is not very bio available (synthetic), there is a systemic failure or another mineral or heavy metal may be delivered in too higher values for this mineral to be absorbed into the cells.

Hair analysis has professional credibility, the FEI use it to test horses for banned substances, usually anabolic steroids.

A three cm long section of hair (taken from cutting as close the skin as safely possible at the withers) has the ability to look back three months into dietary and environmental inputs.

cosis as his cause of death PAST CRITICISM There exists an experiment revealing that hair sent from the same horse to multiple laboratories returned conflicting results.

This experiment was run with bias, with the intention to discredit hair analysis.

How did they succeed?

They used long lengths of hair (each centimetre reveals a month of dietary and biological outcomes, so a 30 cm length would reveal things that happened up to 30 months ago).

The persons who ran this experiment apparently cut a long length into sections and sent each section to a different laboratory, so yes you would expect different results in this situation. They likely also took samples from different parts of

the body and there is no evidence to show the samples were free from environmental or chemical contamination for the required prior two week period.

Hair taken from the tail contains urine and manure, or hair taken from leg hair has soil contaminants.

Unless samples are taken following the proper procedure, the results will be varied.

Hair is recommended to be cut from the withers, and not have been in contact with any chemical including shampoos or conditioner for two weeks prior to the sample being taken.

The follicle is left in the skin, the sample is taken by cutting as close as possible to the skin surface.

The most recent three cm of growth is the correct sample to send in.

WHAT CAN I LEARN FROM A HAIR ANALYSIS? A professional hair analysis will reveal comprehensive results alongside an Equine Reference Guide values.

No horse will naturally fall within these ranges on all outcomes.

Several horses from the same property on the same feeds with show varying outcomes due to individual metabolic processes, age and underlying health issues etc.

Although sometimes testing multiple horses on the same

property will all indicate a toxicity of say aluminium, arsenic or iron due to them all being exposed to the same toxicities in the soil or water.

DID YOU KNOW? Health issues such as gastric irritation including ulcers, tremors, lameness, weight loss, fertility issues, behavioural problems likely stem from too little or too much of dietary minerals or heavy metals.

Iron: Australian soils are mostly very rich in iron, to an extent perhaps 85% of all horses are living with an Iron toxicity of some degree.

What does this mean, it means their zinc and copper are compromised.

If you are feeding sufficient copper and zinc, the results may still reveal very low tissue storage, indicating not much is actually available due to the iron.

Horse feeds that contain iron will further exasperate the toxicity and lead to symptoms that include gastric irritation, gastric pain, gastric ulceration as well as damage to the small and large intestinal lining.

Other signs associated with iron toxicity include diarrhoea, dehydration, depression and reduced immunity.

New research shows high iron is positively associated with the onset of glucose intolerance, potentially leading to insulin resistance.

Did you know Vitamin C increase iron uptake and decreases copper?

The Nude Horse recommends never feeding Vitamin C to horses, as a horse makes their own vitamin C as they need it. Antagonists to iron are Vitamins B12, D and E and minerals selenium, copper and zinc. Correcting antagonist feed ratios can assist in decreasing iron absorption.

Garlic is also shown to reduce iron absorption.

Lead exposure during pregnancy and lactation has irrecoverable effects on later cognitive and behavioural development.

Because, in these developmental stages, the brain is in a state of rapid growth and toxic metals exposure such as lead may result impairment of later cognitive functions.

High levels of lead can cause damage to the central nervous system, the brain, the kidneys and red blood cells, so it has been strongly linked to antisocial behaviour.

Calcium is an antagonist to lead.

Garlic juice administration during pregnancy and lactation may protect lead-induced neural damage in offspring while in gestation, when the mother is exposed to high levels of lead.

Other minerals Many studies in both animals and humans have shown that a deficiency in essential metals such as zinc and calcium can lead to greater absorption and toxicity of cadmium and lead.

Lithium - symptoms of mild to moderate lithium toxicity include, fine tremors, frequent urination, thirst, diarrhea, stomach pains, fatigue, muscle weakness and drowsiness, weight gain and cognitive dysfunction (dull).

Magnesium - recent fads prescribe large doses of magnesium for problems related to muscles, cramps and neurological disfunction.

Without understanding the knock-on effect to calcium uptake, imbalances occur and things like bone integrity are affected.

Manganese - toxicity can result in a permanent neurological disorder known as manganism with symptoms that include tremors, difficulty walking and facial muscle spasms.

These symptoms are often preceded by other lesser symptoms including irritability and aggressiveness.

Diets higher in phosphorus to calcium can lead to chronic calcium deficiency, visible symptoms include shifting lameness and in worst case scenarios enlargement of the upper and lower jaws and facial crests.

Don't panic. Having a high oxalate horse pasture isn't the end of the world - with a little understanding and some expert help, it is easy to supplement horses grazing high oxalate grasses to provide a healthy ration and avoid 'bighead disease.'

Marketing spin and urban myths about pasture oxalates abound in the Australian horse community.

This article provides scientific facts and veterinary recommendations to answer commonly asked questions, explain the risks and how to safely manage them.

How long does bighead take to develop?

The length of time it takes grazing horses to develop clinical signs of NSH associated with bone demineralisation depends on: 1. The calcium levels that were present in the bone to begin with; 2. The amount of oxalate consumed; and 3. The amount of calcium consumed.

Most recorded cases have taken at least a few months to develop.

Think of calcium as money, and bones as the bank. If you start taking out more than you put in, you'll move into deficit.

The time it takes to get into trouble depends on how much you had in the bank to start with, and how much you spend each day.

What are high oxalate pastures?

Oxalates are a naturally occurring plant biomineral thought to help plants with calcium regulation and improve light dispersion to improve the efficiency of photosynthesis and growth.

Many plants contain oxalates but only some contain the very high levels that can induce bighead in horses.

What makes oxalates dangerous to horses?

Plants contain oxalates in either soluble or insoluble form. Insoluble oxalates are bound to calcium and magnesium inside plant leaves and stems.

All the calcium and magnesium within a high oxalate plant can be oxalate-bound, making it unavailable to horses grazing those plants.

Ingested soluble oxalates can be broken down in the stomach into oxalic acid. This free oxalate binds calcium inside the horse's stomach and small intestine to form an insoluble calcium oxalate crystal which cannot cross the gut wall for absorption into the bloodstream.

The calcium that is bound to the oxalate molecule continues on through the digestive tract to be passed in manure.

Fortunately, oxalates are not like little pacmen with insatiable appetites! Each oxalic acid molecule can only bind a single calcium molecule.

Blood calcium levels are strictly regulated by hormones because calcium plays many

When inadequate calcium is absorbed from the gut, the kidneys excrete less calcium and bones release calcium from storage to replenish blood calcium levels.

If this continues over time and bones lose too much calcium, they become weak, fibrous and misshapen. The resulting weakened bone condition is known as equine nutritional secondary hyperparathyroidism (NSH) and is also called bighead, bran disease and fibrous osteodystrophy (FOD).

Do horses get oxalate poisoning?

It is extremely rare for horses to experience oxalate poisoning.

Oxalate toxicosis occurs when unbound oxalic acid is absorbed into the bloodstream and binds ionised blood calcium.

Acutely low blood calcium and magnesium levels can cause hypocalcaemia (very low blood calcium) or grass tetany.

Affected horses may have muscle tremors, staggering gait, loss of appetite, lethargy and can die without prompt treatment Oxalate toxicosis more commonly occurs in ruminants due to microbial breakdown of insoluble oxalates in the rumen.

High levels of free oxalic acid reach the small intestine from where it can be absorbed into the bloodstream.

When is the risk of bighead highest?

The higher the oxalate level of the grass, and the more grass the horse eats, the more soluble oxalates will be present in the gut, increasing the risk of calcium deficiency.

Broodmares and growing horses are most susceptible due to their higher calcium requirements.

The amount of oxalate that plants contain varies according to stage of growth and environmental conditions.

Supplementing horses grazing high oxalate pastures Horses grazing high oxalate pasture can become calcium deficient, even when they eat their recommended intake of calcium.

Horses grazing high oxalate pastures must be supplemented with a supply of calcium greater than their oxalate intake or calcium in a form that cannot be bound by oxalate.

Supplementing horses on high oxalate pastures A 500 kg horse in light work needs to consume 30g of elemental calcium per day.

A portion of this calcium requirement will be naturally contained in the roughage and hard feeds the horse consumes.

Supplementary calcium is usually needed to balance any diet and horses grazing high oxalate pasture have an even higher requirement. Â Continued page 11

No. You do not have to supplement with chelated calcium but you do need to feed adequate calcium.

Some dietary inorganic calcium is necessary to bind all oxalates present in the gut to prevent soluble oxalates crossing the gut wall and entering the bloodstream.

To say that inorganic calcium cannot prevent bighead is akin to declaring paracetamol useless for pain management after using it at one-quarter of the recommended dose rate.

Scientists have known for decades that feeding supplementary such as lime or DCP inorganic sources of calcium and phosphorous successfully controls bighead in horses grazing high oxalate pastures.

How much calcium does a horse on high oxalate pasture need?

The amount of supplement required to provide 30 g of calcium depends on the percentage of actual calcium in a calcium salt or chelate A daily hard feed to mix the calcium supplement into is required to ensure each horse consumes enough supplementary calcium to prevent bighead.

There is no scientific evidence that horses innately 'know' how much calcium they need.

Australian research has confirmed that equine diets must have a total calcium to oxalate ratio of 1:2 to prevent bighead.

Optimal absorption only occurs when co-dependant mineral levels are balanced relative to each other.

It is of vital importance that calcium levels are balanced with the phosphorous and magnesium levels of the total intake.

High oxalate pastures, like horse pastures all around the world, also need trace mineral supplementation (especially copper, zinc, iodine and often selenium) to balance critical mineral ratios across the whole diet.

Can bighead be cured?

In many cases, the answer is yes.

Even when remodelled bone does not completely reshape, the structural weaknesses and secondary symptoms can be resolved with dietary changes and appropriate mineral supplementation.

Veterinarians treating horses with NSH have reported benefits from legume forages such as lucerne as well as supplemental inorganic calcium to establish a whole of diet calcium to phosphorous ratio of at least 4 to 1 for a period of six to 12 months.

What other management practices help?

In addition to feeding extra calcium as part of a balanced diet, there are some very effective management strategies to reduce the impact of high oxalate pastures and decrease the amount of calcium supplementation required. * Reduce the oxalate intake of the diet by replacing some of the pasture intake with low oxalate forages such as lucerne (which has the added bonus of supplying 10g of elemental calcium per kg of hay) and grass hay made from low oxalate species.

A 500 kg horse eating 10 kg dry matter of high oxalate pasture containing 1.4% oxalates and only 0.3% calcium will consume 30g of calcium from the pasture and enough oxalate to bind 70g of calcium. Unless the horse is supplemented with calcium, it will be mining 40g of calcium from bone to maintain blood calcium levels.

* Create a physical space between calcium supplements and oxalates.

Calcium uptake can be increased by removing the horse from high oxalate roughage and feeding low oxalate hay for half an hour before and after feeding the calcium supplement.

This allows the body time to absorb the calcium while fewer oxalates are present in the gut. * Pasture management to reduce high oxalate species. Strategic spraying, slashing and grazing management can be used to limit the proportions of high oxalate grass in a paddock.

But remember that high oxalate grasses have some benefits, too.

They're often tough, drought resistant and survive under heavy grazing pressure where other grasses die off.

They can provide green pick, omega-3 oils and ground cover at times of the year when low oxalate grasses and legumes have not survived.

With an understanding of what oxalates do, it is not difficult to supplement horses grazing high oxalate grasses to avoid 'bighead disease.'

Some supplement companies such as Farmalogic Equine offer free diet analysis services to help horse owners identify pastures and calculate their supplementation requirements.

To correct this balance with an inorganic calcium source, the horse needs 40 g of calcium (to 'feed' the oxalates) plus 30 g of elemental calcium (to meet the horse's RDI). He needs less Aglime than DCP because lime has a higher percentage of calcium. If 'Ned' has a larger hard feed or eats some low oxalate hay, he will eat less grass and need less supplemental calcium to balance the diet.

An alternative is to correct the balance with a bioavailable chelate.

The supplement only needs to provide 30 g of elemental calcium but should also add at least 40 g of inorganic calcium to bind soluble oxalates and prevent oxalate absorption into the bloodstream. It is also critical to ensure adequate phosphorous and magnesium are provided to balance mineral ratios for optimal uptake.

My horse Lou and his staggering gait

By FRAN CRAWFORD My horse Lou, who had been in my care since he was two, was very old (probably 27 or so) when I noticed he was developing a staggering gait type walk.

His hind legs seemed most affected. It appeared a new condition had developed over and above the deterioration I had ordinarily associated with his old age.

As I watched the way he walked, his staggering gait looked to me to be some sort of nervous incoordination, as though the messages weren't getting through to the back legs properly, as opposed to muscle weakness. I Googled nerves and nutrition, staggering gait, coordination, etc and found that magnesium was associated with good nerve function.

At around the same time, I was showing my elderly neighbour my citrus trees, as they had developed an unusual pattern in the colour of the leaves.

The leaves were dark green in colour around the veins, but pale and almost yellow in the inter-spaces.

"They need a dose of Epsom salts", she said.

"Dissolve it in water and spray on the leaves".

So I Googled this and found that citrus trees were susceptible to magnesium deficiency.

The penny dropped. If the soil on which the citrus trees grew and the grass that the hors-

I researched magnesium supplements for horses. Yes, Epsom salts came up but it was not absorbed well.

I got onto a chelated magnesium and vitamin E supplement and started feeding that to Lou. It was very expensive, so no opportunity existed to feed it to all my horses. I believe the results for Lou were moderate, but of

course, because of the cost and for fear of poisoning him, I only fed at the recommended rate. This was without altering his largely pellet and lucerne based diet.

'Only the very best for my horse', I thought.

A friend referred me to Pauline Moore's article about magnesium supplementation for horses, so I purchased a bag of Elektra magnesium flakes and followed the recommendations Pauline suggested.

The results were clear and rapid and much more significant than I had seen with the previous product. Not only that, but it was so cheap that I could afford to feed it to all my horses - so I did.

In essence, laminitis is a vascular disease. Yes, toxic products from the gut, and more commonly now, high levels of insulin, have been shown to cause inflammation and directly damage the structural integrity of the hoof wall but the direct, and lasting effect of this, is disruption to the blood supply to the foot.

In a nutshell, recovery of the horse depends on the ability of the healing processes to restore proper circulation to the foot.

This is where the venogram becomes invaluable.

In the majority of high scale cases of laminitis, the initial toxic insult is transient and causes the damage to the laminae in the first few days.

Unfortunately, it is most often up to three to six weeks before the devastating effects of the insult become apparent.

This is when the pedal bone "rotates" and penetrates the sole, or even worse, the horse becomes a sinker.

A lot of horses can appear as if they are improving or holding their own in the interim and by the time the disastrous signs present, it is too late to really do a lot about it.

The use of the serial venograms from the onset of the case of laminitis allows precise and objective measurement of the state of the circulation and progress of the disease and subsequently allows preventative measures to be Full Service Equine Clinic It’s all about your horse

Without doubt, the most useful new technique that has arrived for us in recent years has been the use of venograms to assess the blood supply to a horse's foot.

The technique has been around for quite a number of years but has only really become a widespread tool in equine practice over the past six to 10 years.

Basically it involves sedating and nerve blocking the horse, applying a tourniquet to the lower limb, injecting radioopaque contrast medium into the veins that supply the foot and rapidly taking a series of x-rays.

The images obtained are spectacular and give precise information as to exactly what is happening to the blood supply to the foot.

The technique is a little demanding technically but practice and teamwork allows very rewarding images to be obtained.

Laminitis is the critical disease where venograms come to the

invoked before the foot collapses.

Veterinary schools teach the value of x-raying horses with laminitis as a tool for monitoring progress but by the time radiographic changes have developed, it is once again too late.

Venograms are a relatively simple step to add to the x-ray evaluation to allow a much more complete and objective assessment of what is happening.

We believe they are invaluable and essential and can make an incredible difference to the management of the condition.

The technique is relatively simple but can be prone to artefact and this is the major limitation.

These artefacts are well documented and plenty of advice is available as to how to avoid them. It simply boils down to good technique and all it takes is a little practice to be able to obtain excellent contrast studies.

The critical area of interest is the blood supply to the dorsal hoof wall, sole, and in particular, the circumflex vessels at the tip of P3.

Subtle changes in the circulation here indicate the commencement of rotation, and allow us to take preventative shoeing measures.

Sequential venogram monitoring of the circulation then provides us with real and accurate measures of the response to treatment.

Laminitis requires prompt treatment From page 14 Â If there has not been a satisfactory response, we are then in a position to proceed to more invasive techniques which can be life-saving for the horse.

We believe the use of venograms to be essential in the management of acute laminitis.

The technique is also useful in more chronic cases but the need is not quite so acute.

Chronic cases require aggressive shoeing techniques to attempt to correct the displacement of the pedal bone that has occurred in the foot.

The venogram gives us essential information in relation to how aggressive we should be and whether surgical intervention may be necessary for there to be any hope of correction of rotation.

Radiographs are essential to prescriptively shoe any horse that has chronic laminitis and the addition of the venogram to the assessment simply provides the clinician with more information that ultimately will increase the prospects of a successful return to function for the horse.

What is exciting about being a veterinarian is the exponential availability of new knowledge and techniques for the management of the whole spectrum of equine disease.

We are now well into the 21st Century and relying on old techniques and procedures from last century is archaic and certainly not achieving the best possible outcome for the horse. Yes, it can become expensive, but so is everything else.

Simply owning a horse is expensive.

All horses are valuable.

venting irreversible damage to a valuable horse, and in many cases very much loved members of the family, then it can be money well spent.

It is certainly going to cost a lot more to care for an animal that has become unsound for the rest of its life. We believe the use of venograms to be one of the most useful new innovations that have come along.

Dental checks for horses of all ages

By SAMANTHA GUNTER, AEDP The common advice given to most horse owners is that horses should see the dentist every 12 months. A qualified dentist, however, will alter this time frame to suit your particular horse’s needs. Often a horse will require more regular treatment, however, it is also possible that a horse may need to be seen less regularly, especially older horses that have had regular treatment throughout their life.

Nonetheless, regardless of age, it needs to be a qualified dentist who recommends a timeframe, otherwise you could be either putting your horse’s health in jeopardy by allowing problems to emerge that otherwise wouldn’t, or you could be paying for useless dental visits!

So, what determines how often your dentist will want to see your horse at each age bracket?

Youngn’s – let’s say two to six years – will almost always need more regular dentistry. Six months is the go-to timeframe recommended and this is because of the many changes that occur during this period.

Deciduous teeth are shed, permanent teeth erupt, and usually horses are mouthed and brokenin at this time. The teeth also erupt more quickly during these early years so they become very sharp, very quickly. A lot of things can go wrong at this time and they go wrong in the mouth of an inexperienced, immature horse. If you’d like more details on your young horse, please refer to my article ‘Dentistry for the Young Horse’. Very rarely will a qualified dentist recommend a young horse be seen less regularly than six months because of the aforementioned reasons.

Middle Age – roughly seven years to about 18 years - is a timeframe that things settle and eruption slows down, so if a qualified dentist has properly seen your horse during his/her younger years, then this is the time your dentist can recommend to reduce the regularity of the dental visits. However, this general rule will not apply if you horse hasn’t had competent dental treatment during the younger years. This is because of the many problems that form due to

neglect: deciduous teeth can get stuck causing permanent teeth to erupt incorrectly and feed to pack and fester and genetics and lifestyle cause malocclusions to form and become destructive.

For more in depth information on the possible malocclusions in horse’s mouth, please refer to my article ‘Major Malocclusions’. So, depending on the diagnosis of your horse’s mouth, your dentist may recommend they revisit your horse more regularly to address these problems. However, after a few visits to reverse any problems, this age group can usually revert back to annual dental visits as the eruption of teeth, and therefore the formation of sharp points, has slowed.

Retirees - obviously not all horses 18 years and over are retired, but this term will be used to encompass all of our lovely golden oldies! The older a horse is, the slower their teeth erupt.

A 20-year-old horse, who has been lucky enough to see a qualified dentist when due for its entire life, may only need a touch up every year or 18 months. This is in stark contrast to a horse that has not received such careful and particular dental care.

With age, comes a myriad of other problems that if the horse hasn’t seen a qualified dentist and hasn’t had any malocclusions addressed and reversed earlier in life, can be detrimental to an older horse’s health and

quality of life.

All malocclusions’ eventual outcome is tooth loss caused by periodontal disease and subsequent decay and pain. A horse only has a certain amount of tooth that can erupt throughout their lifespan - once that tooth has erupted fully, it will eventually wear down to nothing or be put under so much pressure by the surrounding oral structures that it will fall out. It does not just magically fall out however, and the years leading up to this scenario are painful and often dangerous for the horse as they are no longer able to chew properly, thus risking colic and choke. Excessive weight loss is an almost certain symptom of a dental problem, and as most of you know, it is very hard to get condition back on an older horse who loses weight. For more

If you have an old horse who, for one reason or another, hasn’t been able to keep up-to-date with the dentist, your dentist may not actually be able to do much for them except recommend a new diet.

Once they’ve reached this age, a horse doesn’t have enough tooth left to erupt to enable a dentist to do any major corrections. If a dentist were to drastically reduce a wavemouth for example (refer to my malocclusions article for more detail), the horse would be left unable to chew since their teeth would no grind together and they would not have enough tooth left to erupt to fix this situation.

Basically this horse, having reached such a bad stage of a malocclusion, will need to be on a special diet for the remainder of their life to ensure they do not colic or choke. This is not a good situation and can often cost the owner a lot of money having to provide this food, and feed many times a day to keep their horse healthy.

The dentist will recommend they visit the horse every year if only to help postpone any loss of tooth and any further periodontal deterioration.

The dental health of each age group can be maintained very economically as long as the owner takes the time to firstly make sure their dentist is properly qualified, listens to their dentist, and ensures their horse is never too overdue for a dental visit.

The earlier a horse can get into a good dental routine the healthier your horse will be for their entire life!

Cannabis-based feed supplements for livestock Medicinal Organic Cannabis Australia (MOCA) has announced a partnership to produce a cannabidiol (CBD) product for high end livestock in Europe.

MOCA has entered into partnership with Sementi, one of Europe's largest livestock feed producers to manufacture a range of medical cannabis-based feed supplements for high value livestock.

The new product range will include a cannabinoid formula developed by MOCA and will be sold under the MOCA CBD brand and will enter into the market for distribution in December this year.

Further investigation predictably revealed that the different organs and parts of the body were made up of different minerals, and/or different apportionments of those minerals.

He therefore concluded that those different minerals and/or different apportionments were vital for both the integrity and functioning of those individual organs and parts.

In 1938, Dr. Maurice Blackmore (1906-1978), an Australian Naturopathic Physician, devised a method that retained the symptomatology of Schussler, but employed small pharmacological doses of mineral substance (ranging from 4mg in the case of calcium fluoride, to 260mg in the case of sodium phosphate).

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Maleah Lang-McMahon is no stranger to success in the showjumping arena with the young rider amassing a trove of accolades despite her young age.

Adding to her already impressive list of achievements, the 16year-old who hails from Waterford, Queensland can now add Sport Australia Hall of Fame (SAHOF) Scholarship recipient to the list.

The Sport Australia Hall of Fame Scholarship & Mentoring Program was created to assist the next generation of young elite Australian athletes to achieve their potential in both sport and life.

The scholarship program is open each year to Australian athletes under the age of 21 and is one of the country’s most prestigious bursaries for young athletes.

“It is a great honour to be recognised by the SAHOF. As an aspiring elite athlete I believe initiatives such as the SAHOF along with their mentoring program will be a vital tool for any young athlete, and I hope to be able to use this to further my sporting career and gain more recognition as an equestrian athlete for both myself and my sport,” Maleah said.

Maleah is one of the most suc-

cessful up and coming young riders in the country and she hopes to one day represent Australia at the Olympic and World Equestrian Games.

Showjumping is not only a passion for Maleah it is also ‘in her blood’ with both her parents having competed at the highest level of the sport themselves, a factor that further fuels her ambition.

Her father Peter McMahon represented Australia at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and her mother, Michelle LangMcMahon, represented Australia at the 1994 World Equestrian Games at The Hague in the

Maleah currently has a team of five horses that she competes regularly Australia-wide and is dedicated to achieving her future goals of riding internationally.

Each day Maleah starts riding her horses at sunrise spending approximately six hours in the saddle before helping her family run their racing and pre-training stable which has around 200 horses at any one time.

Her dreams of winning on the world stage have been held since she was a little girl and Maleah has already taken the first steps in turning those dreams into reality, gaining international competition experience in Europe at the age of just 14.

The experience has left her hungry for more and she has already started planning a return journey to the continent.

“I would really like to compete in the German Friendships next year.

With the Teams League starting now I think I will only have time to go away for a short period, but I would really like to have an insight on how they train and compete,” explains Maleah.

When asked what she enjoys most about showjumping Maleah couldn’t pick just one element. “I love everything about getting in the ring and giving it my all whether it’s in

the silver tour or on the young horses in the 80cm. I always try to take mum and dad’s horses too, just to get an extra ride somewhere!”sh said.

With determination, dedication and talent well beyond the average 16-year-old the future for Maleah Lang-McMahon looks sure to shine bright in the showjumping arena.

Shane Rose and Virgil claim victory at FEI

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA Olympian Shane Rose and Virgil have taken out the CCI4*-S at Equestriad in Camden, NSW the first FEI competition to be conducted in Australia since the COVID-19 global pandemic placed the world on hold.

Shane and the iconic Vigil are no strangers to success in the international arena with numerous wins and placings under their belt including 1st at Blair Castle CIC3* (SCT) in 2017 and 3rd place at Pau (FRA) CCI5*-L in 2019.

The combination also represented Australia at the FEI World Equestrian Games 2018 in Tryon (USA) with the team securing Australia’s place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

"It was his first event out since Pau 5* which was almost a year ago and I couldn't have been happier with him," Shane said.

"I was very happy with his dressage test. We have been working on some new things with Bettina Hoy and I am really happy with the improvements we are seeing, I think we have some really good scores coming our way soon.

“His showjumping was as good

Shane Rose as it has ever been, he has always been a great jumper and on the cross country he found a really good rhythm once we got about six or seven fences in to the course, I was really thrilled with him."

Making this win even more special for Shane was the fact that he is also a member of the organising committee responsible for conducting the event.

and Virgil at Equestriad photo by rider striving for success at the top level of the sport, but also dedicates himself to giving back to the eventing community by ensuring riders are able to compete at quality events.

Shane and the team at Equestriad worked tirelessly in the lead up to the event to ensure all FEI safety and COVID-19 guidelines were in place and adhered to onsite so the event could go ahead for Australian riders.

"The event was awesome and really ran seamlessly for the two days,” he said.

“As a committee we had to pull it all together in a very short space of time and the entire committee worked so hard in the last few weeks and did an amazing job.

“The feedback from the riders has been amazing."

Obviously we had to run the event in a very different format with the COVID-19 restrictions and we could only have 500 people on the venue at any one time.

“This was the first time we have run two separate events over two days, with some classes running on both days."

Calico Pony Fellow Olympian and High Performance Eventing Gold Squad rider Stuart Tinney rounded out the top three positions in the CCI4*-S finishing in both second and third place.

Stuart finished second on the stunning chestnut Celebration owned by Elisabeth Brinton who's fresh off his win at Canberra Horse Trials, and finished third on his own Leporis.

The event, which was held under strict social distancing protocols, hosted a range of classes at FEI and national level.

With some States in Australia still in various stages of lockdown, notably Victoria, NSW competitors dominated the entry list across all classes.

The event was held over two days with all three phases of the competition for each class being conducted on the same day.

Winners of the FEI classes were: CCI4*-S Shane Rose and Virgil CCI3*-S Niki Rose and Dreamcatcher CCI2*-S Courtney Foster and Gattamelata HPS

National Horse Traceability System

By EQUESTRIAN AUSTRALIA The Victorian Government is co-leading the development of a national horse traceability register, which will improve biosecurity and tracking measures for all horses across Australia.

A National Horse Traceability Working Group has been established to inform the design of the register, following agreement at the Australasian Racing Ministers Conference and Australian Agriculture Ministers’ meeting that Victoria and Queensland would lead its development.

Minister for Agriculture Jaclyn Symes has announced the following industry organisations and representatives will make up the Working Group: •Kathy Gibson, Animal Health Australia •Linda Kelly and Dr Meredith Flash, Australian Horse Industry Council •Karen Day, Racing Australia •Kathleen Mullan, Harness Racing Australia •Dr Bidda Jones, Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) •Equine Australia •Representatives from state and territory governments as well as the Commonwealth.

Reward moments of greatness

By TANJA KRAUS We all put up the pretty pictures.

The reality is that when you are training any horses there are going to be plenty of 'ugly' pictures.

One of the mantras we ride by at TKH is 'it's got to be big and ugly before it can be small and pretty'.

This is especially true when it comes to green horses.

Daisy is learning how to move with a rider without tension and brace, which means there are plenty of moments with tension and brace.

The important part is that I, as her rider, feel the 'moments of greatness' and release and relax signalling to her that this is the 'but' that I'm chasing.

It's not about getting her to submit, it's about her relaxing and feeling good, and me releasing and helping her feel even better in those moments.

Then she will crave those moments.

Safety initiatives support effective risk management Some great progress is happening in the safety space within equestrian sport.

Despite COVID-19 being disruptive to many of our lives, it has also gifted us some time to review EA national safety processes and documents.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s about creating great education and resources to support our sport organisers, while also creating more efficient and effective risk management processes.

We all know there is a risk of injury or illness within equestrian sport, regardless of the activities we participate in.

Therefore, EA is dedicated to checking safety processes, consulting with experts, improving safety education, event planning and emergency response.

Areas of focus over the past few months include, but are not limited to, the following: â&#x20AC;˘A review of existing concussion protocols has been completed, with the development of a fresh training program, documents and reporting for athletes, officials and organising committees. A National Discipline approach will be rolled out from 1st January, 2021. â&#x20AC;˘A review of injury/illness reporting processes at events, including consultation with the Eventing Medical Consultative Group, medical service providers and organising committees. The aim has been to streamline our injury reporting to provide consistency and enable effective data analysis across all Sport Disciplines. â&#x20AC;˘A critical review of medical support and coverage across all events, regardless of size and budget, is a currently underway. We are focusing on developing improved relationships with our medical service providers, whilst also supporting those who volunteer their expertise.

Identifying ways we can work together to fund and support adequate medical care despite our event location, budget and available resources is an important aspect of making our sport safer. - EA

Horses helping humans

By SUE SPENCE When I started Horses Helping Humans (HHH) 16 years ago, I had no idea it would become an award-winning program and earn the reputation it has of being an outcome based Equine Intervention so popular with family and youth services and for my story to be published by Pan Macmillan.

We have now had 1000s of students through the program with proven outcomes of helping change lives for the better.

It was these outcomes, which led me to license HHH so the program would help those in other communities.

Becoming a licensee means you actually become part of your local community as only one license is granted per area. eg ( HHH Gold Coast, HHH Sunshine Coast etc ) Helping you become a respected youth and family service within your government boundary lines assures the quality and outcomes delivered at a professional level are the same in every area.

This assures that case workers and counsellors in all areas can confidently refer to HHH for communications intervention and assist them with opening the doors of communication with their challenging clients.

This helps them immensely when applying for their own funding, as HHH is a known program for helping with re-

engagement back into school or study.

Youth and family services, school chaplains or counsellors, mental health organisations, child protection, homeless youth, DV services and the Justice Dept refer the students we work with.

The training covers extensive communication and body language techniques as well as requiring horsemanship ground skills to be of a high level.

(The program is based on professional horsemanship, self-regulation and life skills which translate straight into everyday life situations.)

The License includes full business set up, extensive hands-on individual training with me at HHH on the Gold Coast as well as me working with Licensees at their property with their horses.

It also includes, me speaking at Licenseesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; local Youth and Family interagency meetings to discuss outcomes and the referral system, I contact local council, MPs and training colleges, my attendance at the opening as I organise a media launch and offer ongoing support.

Everything from invoice templates and advertising, referral forms, training manuals, videos, workbooks for youth workers, horsemanship, media releases upon opening, follow up and our annual conference is included.

It is the most rewarding career and it is a blessing to be able to help so many make positive changes in their lives.

Australian Miniature Horses

By LIANA WYNNE The Miniature Horse industry has expanded rapidly over the past 10 years throughout Australia.

The enthusiasts vary in age groups from tiny tots right through to those in their 80s.

There are numerous reasons why horse lovers purchase a miniature horse or pony.

Some maybe unable to continue riding but still possess the love of the animal, lack of space, affordability especially in times of drought, safety issues or simply keen to try another discipline with equines in hand, performance or harness.

There is a misconception in the equine circles where some people think that competitors become involved with miniatures as they can't â&#x20AC;&#x153;cut it in the large horse competitionsâ&#x20AC;? which could not be any further from the truth.

There is a naivete especially regarding performance, as the training in this discipline is extensive.

Many hours are devoted to groundwork at home.

In competitions, the horse is not to be touched and only hand gestures and vocals can be used.

Touching a horse is regarded as a penalty.

Unlike a large horse you can ride and give aids, this is obviously not possible so other methods of training and practice have to be adapted.

cessful especially in performance and harness.

The Australian Miniature Horse Society (AMHS) has recognised the popularity of the miniature equines and have catered for their needs by extending the height categories.

The AMHS has opened their books to allow for horses of any breed between 42" up to 50" (12.2 hands at mature height).

This height category is known as the Australian Show Horse Foundation (ASFR) and at least one parent must be registered with either AMHS/ASPA/AMPR or an approved Association/Society for resulting foal to be ASFR registered.

A general description is of a sound, well-balanced horse, possessing the correct conformation characteristics required of most breeds.

The Foundation Show horse should show refinement and femininity in the mare.

Boldness and masculinity in the stallion at the same time showing an impeccable temperament.

The general impression should be one of symmetry, strength, agility and alertness.

The AMHS caters for four separate height categories: Miniature Horse, Small Horse, Little Horse and Small Foundation Horse as well as Miniature Ponies and Small/Little Ponies.

As with their smaller counterparts, the Foundation Horse can be utilized in all disciplines from Halter, Performance and Harness.

The Foundation Horse can comprise of a variety of breeds and is as versatile and capable in the showring as the smaller miniatures.

By introducing breeds such as e.g. Arabs, Welsh, Riding Ponies and American Shetland etc and crossing them with miniature horses, it provides more scope for the breed.

Depending on the cross, it could produce refinement with great movement and temperament with the added height.

The Foundation Horse can also be used as a lead-line pony broadening its show capabilities.

Being a reasonably new addition to AMHS, the Foundation Horse is beginning to be recognised throughout the industry for its versatility and wonderful breeding prospects.

The Horse Report NORTHERN NSW HACK CHAMPIONSHIPS The Northern NSW Hack Championships, which were postponed from earlier in the year, have now been approved for a new date and venue in November 2020.

The 2020 event which was originally to be held at the Lismore Showgrounds in May will now be held at Hawthorne Park in South Grafton from November 28th to 29th.

This event will have a condensed program covering all the Grand National Qualifying events and is still in the planning process.

The club membership has grown with lots of new members and volunteers who are very keen and are working hard to get this up and running and be a fabulous event.

will be holding three day camp on Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 21,22,23 January.

Instruction will be provided in show jumping, sporting, showriding, dressage, mounted games, theory Horsemanship, and scary obstacles.

There will also be theory lessons, fun with games, trick riding and vaulting and lots more.

Following the camp, there will be the annual Zone 15 fundraiser T-shirt gymkhana on Sunday, January 24.

The program offers something for riders of all ages and interests from the lead line under eight riders up to associates rider 17 yrs and under 26 yrs.

Events include dressage, best presented, hack, rider, pleasure and bareback classes, showjumping and sporting events.

The club operates out of the Murwillumbah Showgrounds and offers great facilities, stables, camping, canteen, new dressage arenas, jumping and sporting equipment, qualified instructors and friendly helpful members.

New members are welcome to join the club and join in the fun but riders from any club are welcome to come along.

Nominations are essential to attend both the gymkhana and camp.

“BYE BYE FLY” QUEENSLAND ITCH, SWEET ITCH, SUMMER ECZEMA and EQUINE ALLERGIC DERMATITIS are names for distressing skin conditions which affects horses in spring and summer months throughout Australia and around the world.

T

he usual cause is a hypersensitivity to the bites of flies (in particular sand flies or midges).

While the bite of the flies are an irritation, some horses develop sensitivity to the bite and will rub themselves so much that they cause injury to their skin.

Research shows the cause is an allergic reaction to the chemicals in the saliva of the midges (as with humans).

KURITCH has been specially formulated to help assist this problem effectively, in a number of ways: Firstly, it repels the biting insects using the combination of the natural repellent “Citronella Oil” and a highly effective repellent “DEET”. Secondly, it soothes the irritated areas thus relieving the horse from biting and rubbing, which in turn allows the normal healing process to begin.

It achieves this by the inclusion of the natural antiseptic “Eucalyptus oil” and nd Camphor oil” which naturally relieves es itchy skin.

These significant benefits are also so enhanced by the “Rain Resistant” and nd “Low irritant” formula. As it doesn’t n’t contain alcohol (prevalent in most fly sprays) it won’t “sting” the horse. It can an also be applied to surface wounds, s, minor cuts and skin abrasions to help lp prevent irritation and possible infecction by nuisance insects.

Registered by the APVMA in Australia for over 40 years, extennsive field experience has proven en KURITCH to be a most effective ve solution for both preventing and nd healing distressing skin conditions ns caused by biting insects.

Not only that, but once or twice a day, stable lies come to the horse, feed vigorously for a minute or two, and then return to the shade to digest their food. These bites can cause intense irritation in some horses. The bites appear as small raised lumps with a central scab.
