Removing mould and mildew from leather (Information supplied by Leffler & Son) Can a leather cleaner remove mould and mildew? Yes, leather cleaners can remove mould and mildew—the photos at left are testamount to that—but it is very important to choose cleaners that don’t ruin your leather in the process or set the scene for future mould and mildew invasions. Leather is made of a tangled mass of fine root-like fibres, and once microscopic mould and mildew spores lodge deeply in this tangle they are very difficult to shift. Anything strong enough to penetrate the fibre tangle and destroy every spore could damage the leather fibres as well, compromising the leather’s structure and strength. Don’t use old time remedies like vinegar, household bleach or alcohol—the concentrations needed to kill mould and mildew spores are also strong enough to damage the internal leather fibres. Also avoid traditional cleaners like saddle soap on already mouldy leather—these contain glycerin, which attracts and holds the very atmospheric moisture mould and mildew thrive on. Rather, use penetrating, pH-neutral products like Leather Therapy, which lubricate leather deep to the core without introducing moisture, and which inhibit future mould and mildew growth. Leather Therapy Restorer and Conditioner is the only US Environmental Protection Agency tested and approved product that contains ingredients that inhibit growth of mould and mildew. The following procedure will deliver results similar to those shown in the before and after photos:

Before

How to clean mouldy mildewed leather 1.Take the mouldy or mildewed item outside to clean if at all possible—simply touching a mould or mildew patch will release countless numbers of spores into the air and you do not want to spread these inside where they can colonise other leather items. Failing that, remove any small leather items that are nearby and try to work in as well-ventilated an area with as much natural lighting or direct sunlight as possible. 2.Have a supply of old rags you are prepared to throw away. Wipe as much surface contamination as you can with a wet rag, then discard. Repeat with a clean wet rag. Be sure to discard rags in a way that won’t allow spores to spread further. Don’t rinse and reuse the rags. Use an old toothbrush to clean stitching lines and crevices. 3.Next, with all visible surface mould or mildew removed, use a water-based, pH neutral product like Leather Therapy Wash to give a safe, deep clean that removes the embedded dirt and organic residue that aids future mould and mildew growth 4.Allow the leather to dry fully in the sun— not only will evaporating excess moisture from the leather prevent new spores taking hold, but the UV rays of the sunlight will kill any remaining spores 5.Once dry, condition the leather with a pHneutral product such as Leather Therapy Restorer/Conditioner. Apply the conditioner with a sponge, sparingly as leather only absorbs what it needs. The Restorer/Conditioner will soak in and disappear, so there’s no need to wipe off. It will not stay wet or greasy unless you apply too much at once. The conditioner will not alter the colour or the gloss of your leather. But it will

After penetrate deep into the centre of the leather, nourishing and lubricating the fibres without introducing the moisture that allows mould and mildew to take hold. And being pH neutral means it won’t interfere with the natural acidic environment of leather but will increase its life. 6.We suggest you repeat this process with Wash and Restorer/Conditioner every three months to add years of life to your leather. Wash keeps the leather clean on the outside while Restorer/Conditioner nourishes and protects the leather from mould and mildew from the inside 7.Wash and Restorer/Conditioner are all you need for basic ongoing leather care and protection. However, you may wish to go a little further and use Leather Therapy Finish to give your precious leather a beautiful new shine while providing a protective shield from the elements. 8.A final treatment with Leather Therapy Water Repellant will give even more protection from water, wine, tea, coffee, dirt, mud and salt. Unlike Finish, the repellant will not make the leather look shiny. If anything it tends to give the leather a more matt finish so is best not used on anything you want to look glossy.

Polocrosse is a family affair The sport of polocrosse is very much a family affair where Paul and Sally McGrath are concerned. The two experienced players will don their maroon uniforms once again for Queensland at the 2012 Barastoc Polocrosse Nationals being held in Warwick in April. However, there won't be the long road trip or weeks away from home they are used to when they have been selected to play for their state in previous years. This time around, the family will only have a half hour trip down the road to Warwick to play at the Nationals being held from April 23 to 29. Both members of the Warwick Polocrosse Club, Paul and Sally McGrath, have notched up 20 Polocrosse Nationals between them and both have again been selected to play for Queensland at the upcoming championships being held at Warwick's Morgan Park complex. With their two daughters, Keely and Jordan, who are also keen polocrosse players, both compet-

ing as juniors for the Warwick club. Already, both Sally and Paul, who live and work on the 210 hectare, Darlington Stud, at Greenmount, on the Darling Downs, have had their polocrosse horses in work for close to 12 weeks, getting them ‘in’ a week before Christmas. They are both seasoned campaigners when it comes to the sport and both have represented Australia in polocrosse, with Paul playing in 1994 in a Men's test series and Sally touring New Zealand in 2002 in an Australian Women's side, as well as playing at the World Cup in 2003. Paul started playing for the Gold Coast club at the age of 13 and

has since been a member of both the Toowoomba and Cunningham clubs until he joined Warwick in 1987. His first Nationals selection was as a reserve for the Queensland junior side in 1980 when the championships were held in Capel, Western Australia. He has picked up a men’s Open title with the Maroons in 1998, co-incidently at Warwick and has even had a stint at coaching the men’s Open side in 2010. He is back this year, well horsed on an eight-year-old mare, Kildare Belle, owned by Charlie Brook and is rearing to go as captain of the Queensland Open

Mens side. Sally's polocrosse career began long before she met Paul. At the age of eight, she had her first game of polocrosse for the Richmond Polocrosse Club in north western Queensland. From there, she played for the Flinders Club at Hughenden until she was 17-years-old. "I came down to Warwick in 1986, and was first selected to play at a Nationals in 1988 at Darwin," Sally said. Sally is also looking forward to the Warwick Nationals and believes her Open Mixed team are ‘a good chance’ to take out this year's title.

Heavy horse day to help worthy cause It will be a case of the old helping out the new when the Killarney Lions Club helps to host a heavy horse day at Yangan just outside of Warwick on April 29. Held on well-known identity and heavy horse operator and breeder, Mick Bradford, the day, now in its 11th year, will be a fund raiser with all proceeds going to the CareFlight Helicopter Service. The property has been in Mick’s family for generations with much of the original infrastructure still in place. time to see how things were done before the introduction of mechanised farm equipment, there will also be heritage displays by a local blacksmith, wheelwrighting as well as hay-

making, chaffmaking and corn shelling. The day will be as much a tribute to the role which horses such as the Clydesdale and Australian Draught Horse played in developing the nation as it is to the men and women who toiled behind the teams and equipment. Food and drinks will be available as well as local arts and crafts and it will be for a good cause, the CareFlight helicopter. Mick Bradford’s property is just 15 minutes east of Warwick on Swanfels Road, Yangan. For more details visit www.heavyhorseday.com.com or contact Mick on 07 4664 8206.

Introduction to dental care for horses By Dr SHANNON LEE BVSc MACVSc Eq Dent How many of you have experienced dental pain? a cavity, a broken or infected tooth, an ulcer? If you have then you know that dental pain can be severe, debilitating and constant. But did you know that horses suffer all of the dental conditions that we do, as well as many of their own. Observant owners might notice that their horse's breath smells unpleasant, or that they make faces while eating, or struggle with food like carrots. Riders should always have a horse's mouth checked by a professional if they show signs of discomfort such as head tossing, lugging or resistance, but should realise that many horses in pain won't show any of these signs. Humans have what are called Brachydont teeth, while horses have Hypsodont teeth... if this sounds like something used to describe dinosaurs that's because it is, it's a system used to describe the anatomy of different species. A brachydont tooth, the kind you and I have, is a simple tooth with a small crown ( part of the tooth in the mouth) and short roots. Once we are adults if we look after our teeth they don't change much, where as a hypsodont tooth is a tooth that erupts over the horse's lifetime and is worn away by grinding. This means there is constant change in the mouths of horses, a key difference between us. The second big difference between our mouths and our horses is that our top and bottom jaws are the same width where as the top jaw of a horse is wider than their bottom jaw and their top cheek teeth are wider than their bottom cheek teeth. This increases the surface area that the horse has to chew and grind with, but as they chew an area on the outside of the upper cheek teeth and on the inside of the lower cheek teeth gets very little wear (but continues to erupt) sharp points of enamel form in these areas cutting the cheeks and the tongue. As a horse alters the way it chews (to avoid or minimise pain) other problems develop including malocclusions (overgrown teeth) and periodontal disease (gum disease).

Dental health for horses is crucial to their general well-being and performance. It is important to remember that all mammals share the same basic nervous system and that horse's teeth contain nerves, if these nerves are damaged then the horse experiences pain and the affected tooth will die. When treating horses for dental conditions, it is important to understand that we are dealing with a living tissue. An adult horse has between 36 and 44 teeth and most horses are still having adult teeth erupt into the mouth until they are between five and six years of age so there are a lot of teeth that need to be examined and a lot of activity going on. So what do you need to do to look after your horse's teeth? Firstly all horses need regular dental care, think about it this way - if you spend many years avoiding the dentist chances are when you finally get around to seeing one, your worst fears will come true. In the same way if you don't provide regular appropriate dental care for your horse, then when you finally reach a point where you think you need someone chances are you will have left it far too late. To provide your horse with a high level of care, they will require sedation and pain relief ( provided by your vet). Imagine trying to examine and treat your horse's mouth in detail while they shake their head (the dental exam and treatment won't be very good). So after your horse has been

examined and provided with sedation and pain relief, the outside of the head is examined looking for swellings, discharges and signs of pain and discomfort, then the lips and front teeth are checked ( ulcers and dead teeth

will often be detected here), then a full mouth speculum or gag is placed on the horse and the mouth thoroughly rinsed, the horse’s head is supported and a bright light and mirror used to examine to mouth in detail. An explanation of any problems is then given, a dental chart written and treatment can begin. All horse's, even ones with ‘ good mouths’ should be seen regularly to identify problems early, as a general guide horses under six should be seen twice a year, horses over six once a year, horses over 20 twice a year and horses in work twice a year. This very brief overview of Dental care for horses compress textbooks as big as the yellow pages into a couple of pages so this is just the basics. In future issues, we will provide information on common dental problems, periodontal disease (gum disease), dentistry for older horses, extraction of teeth and malocclusions (overgrown teeth) and equipment used to provide dental care Further information can be found at www.equinedentalvets.com and at www.advancedequinedentistry.com.au

As well as true allergy and direct irritation from the bites, an often forgotten cause of severe dermatitis and irritation are parasite larvae transmitted by the insects, in particular, biting flies. Onchocerca and Habronema infection of the horse can cause terrible reactions and hypersensitivity. Both parasites are adult worms in the horse but the larval stages of their life cycle are picked up by flies and passed onto the horse in the fly's saliva when the fly bites the horse. Each can result in specific recognised syndromes but I also believe that many larvae are deposited into the horse and just cause local irritation. Treatment with anti parasitic drugs can sometimes result in a miraculous turn-around and relief for the horse. Treatment of insect bite hypersensitivity is very difficult and primarily revolves around attention to detail, persistence, and excellent animal husbandry. First and foremost, it is essential to minimise the fly population and stable and paddock hygiene with speedy manure removal is essential. Insecticides must be used. The options are Permethrins, Pyrethrins, and ‘tickicides’. Permethrins such as the Brute and Permoxin are helpful.  Continued Page 13

No easy answer with itch   From Page 12

These insecticides must be applied regularly. They ‘soak’ into the hair and are supposed to be residual but the time frame is a bit limited particularly if the horse is washed regularly. Pyrethrins in myriad forms are the short term applications available. We use Muscoban but there are many forms. They have a mixture of chemicals, citronella is a good repellent. These must be applied, probably twice a day, once when putting out in paddock and again in evening to areas not covered with rugs. The tickicides are of limited value and are more toxic. Barricade or Malathion once a week will help as a spray. Medical drugs are always requested. Corticosteroids are the most useful and almost essential with true Queensland Itch. Injectable Depomedrol is commonly used. Mixed responses and again limited more by the overwhelming numbers of insects rather than the drug. There are some limitations and risks, mainly a possibility of laminitis.

Prednisolone granules are safer and could be used but my feeling is that unless really rubbing or acutely damaged areas occur, probably not necessary. Topical ointments, (Prednoderm), to raw or rubbed areas can be a real help. When the horse has spreading and multiple areas of crusty dermatitis, we recommend shampooing with a chlorhexidine shampoo, (Chlorhex). Lather the horse, let stand for 15 20 minutes, and then wash off. Then spray with fungicide and let dry on. Injectable anti histamines have a high safety margin but are of limited efficacy and have a very short duration. I feel Apple Cider Vinegar can help some horses. This is given twice daily in the feed. It changes the pH and character of the gut contents a little. This in turn is absorbed into the body fluids and may change the odour of the sweat thereby acting as a repellent. This is not proven but it does seem to help in some horses. There is no answer. Understanding the problem is the first essential. This then dictates management procedures designed to minimise the exposure and contact with insects.

My beautiful 5yr old 17.2hh Warmblood gelding (Ray) had a complete Mid level break of his scapula (shoulder blade) during June 2011 in a freak paddock accident. Surgery was not an option so we elected to try and save his life resulting in many highs and lows in the first few months. 7 months later one of the problems was so much weight bearing on the good leg meant the tendon sheath and sesamoid areas were quite large and very sore to touch, despite bandaging for added support ... the leg was in desperate need of being unbandaged. His broken shoulder had healed by this time but we were left with a large haematoma and muscle damage.

Ray was not getting better, in fact he was getting worse. My vet had casually mentioned TuffRock so I did some research and several people suggested a combination of Poultice, Equine Joint Formulae (EJF) & Conditioner Plus (C+). The Poultice has been a blessing enabling tendon support yet still allowing the leg to breathe plus a full range of motion. Load bearing was no longer an issue and it was especially good in the summer months, no heating of the leg, and simply slap the poultice on any sores. It really helped keep any wounds clean, dry and protected from flies. On the shoulder we have seen the mass of swelling and fluids decrease to less than half the size ... these are the visible things I can see on the outside. Internally for his joints that are under serious strain I am positive the combination of EJF and C+ have been working wonders!! The tendon inflammation has reduced and have all but cut the Bute out, which is a huge relief. I am sure had I put him on the products straight away his recovery would have been faster. Now I am able to sleep the whole night through without checking him every 4 hours! Thank you TuffRock !! Brooke

When emotions affect your horse relationship By CYNTHIA MCFARLAND with LINDA & PAT PARELLI No matter how independent we may be, none of us exists in a vacuum. Our thoughts, emotions and actions impact not only ourselves, but those around us. This includes our horses. Emotions, in particular, play a part in every decision we make. When it comes to our relationship with horses, our emotions can have both positive and negative impact. Horses themselves are highly emotional creatures. In a herd, they virtually experience a kind of united nervous system. When something startles the herd, instinct, or the ‘right brain’, takes over because conscious thought is too slow, so instinct and feeling are everything. “This is precisely why horses buy into the emotional imbalances of other horses, as well as their riders and handlers,” says trainer Linda Parelli . “When you learn how to become your horse's leader, he will ignore everything else and only focus on being in harmony with

you as his leader in a 'herd' of two.” In a past article, we talked about doing a pre-ride check to make sure your horse is safe and ready to ride. A savvy horseman will also do an ‘emotions check’ to make sure he's in the right frame of mind and attitude before going out to play with or ride his horse. A major reason emotion comes into play is that most of us only have so much time to spend with our horses, and we want to make the most of it. “People tend to be very time-oriented compared to horses,” Linda said. “You show up to be with your horse and you're beset with goals and time limits. “But your horse is fully present. Horses live in the moment, whereas most people live in the past or the future. This makes for a major disconnect with their horses. “ Making an effort to concentrate less on time can have a positive effect on the hours you have with your horse, whether you're riding, grooming, playing, or just being there.

Some people have already discovered that being with their horse is a relaxing time that truly offers escape. Unfortunately, most people have not found this place because they are frustrated with or afraid of their horse. But is there ever a time when you should not be around your horse because of particular emotions? “Yes and no,” Linda said. “Yes… in terms of expecting your horse to perform. He can only be as good as the leadership you offer and almost nobody wants to follow an emotionally imbalanced leader. Horses are really grounding. You can leave your very stressful day in life and find solace by being totally present with your horse.” Because horses live in the moment without fear of the future or sadness from the past, people tend to find comfort in their presence. Our emotions, or moods, definitely impact the time we spend with our horses. One emotion that many horse owners experience is fear, although most don't feel safe to admit it. “Many riders are naturally brave and competitive but many are not, and sadly, they are made to feel somehow stupid or inferior,” Linda said. “Worse, they are pushed into situations that feel threatening or even dangerous.” “Horses are natural followers who are looking for natural leaders. As prey animals, horses are cowards, claustrophobics and 'panicaholics.' They expect you to be the brave one,” Pat said. Pat said that fear is often caused by thinking you should be riding your horse and doing what everyone else is doing. The Parelli Method emphasizes that horses are for way more than riding, and teaches you how to play on the ground, as well as when riding. If you have fear issues, playing with your horse on the ground and doing things with him that don't necessarily include riding can help you gain confidence and move past that fear. Many horse owners are nervous around their horses because they don't feel in control of the situation. “Unfortunately, many people getting into horses for the first

time are pushed into doing things, such as getting on the horse, before they are mentally and emotionally ready,” Linda said. “At Parelli, we believe in developing a trusting relationship with the horse before ever thinking about getting on his back.” People have all seen the sad spectacle of someone taking out their anger on a horse. As responsible horse owners, this is one emotion that we must keep out of the equation because it's not the horse's fault. Like it or not, our horses consider us as `predators’ and because they are prey animals, they aren't capable of discerning the difference between an aggressive or frightened predator. To the horse, whether you approach him with anger or fear, you are tense and have an unbearable energy, which comes across to him as emotionally unbalanced and out of control. Some owners use the excuse that their horse `makes’ them angry because of things he does. “If your horse makes you angry, chances are you are an angry person and you don't know how to maintain your composure in situations you don't know how to handle,” Pat said. “When you get angry with your horse, it's probably because he's not doing what you want. He's not going to react favorably when you lose your temper because he thinks you are going to kill and eat him! His instincts prevail and he'll do whatever it takes to survive…” “The more we know, the less we will get frustrated or angry, mainly because we learn how to set things up for success rather than be the victim of accident or failure,” Linda said. Take a lesson from your horse and make an effort to live in the present, especially when you are around him.  David Grace is a 4 Star Parelli Instructor in Queensland that offers Parelli Courses in this area. Teaching turns, rollbacks and spins some horses turn their nose away from the turn. The horse should always look into the turn not lead with his shoulder. Dropping his shoulder in or out results in bad balance, lost athleticism and lost forwards. Over-bending will put your horse’s shoulders in a bind and will make it harder to step with is inside leg. Some suppling exercises that will help are freestyle head in and out, shoulder in and counter arc for shoulder control and soft feel (flexion of the poll) for shoulder elevation. These are only exercises to help your horse’s balance and suppleness for a correct turn. In a correct turn, if your horse counter arcs he may take a bigger step with his inside leg but he won’t be balanced so he can't turn smoothly, fast or consistently. If his head is too far to the inside it puts too much weight on his inside shoulder making it harder to step with the inside foot. 2. Start the Turn with his Inside Leg

By KEN FAULKNER Hi everyone, many people ask me about turns, rollbacks and spins, so I thought I'd share some of my ideas and hope it might be of some use to you in your training methods. With any turn you should focus on the first step. The first step should be his leading front leg, you have to be able to pick and place his leading front leg in a full range of positions starting with forward all the way around to backward. In any turn your horse must be able to do three things easily: 1.Follow his nose. 2.Start the turn with his inside front leg 3.Go forward There are more than just these elements but at the moment let’s just explore these three: 1. Follow his nose. To be able to do this he will need good body control. He should look right if you lift the right rein and left if you lift the left rein. This sounds simple but

Every turn should start with the inside front foot. This should be the basics of every turn. If you promote the inside leg you get direction and set your horse up for speed later. It is important that the outside leg steps in front of the inside leg. When your horse’s steps with his inside leg, he will lower his body giving him better balance and also allow him to add strength to the turn. It will also allow him to move back the other way more easily with strength. An exercise to help him learn to use his inside leg is to walk a small circle on a freestyle rein. When he is comfortable lift the inside rein and pulse in time with the foot asking him to step further into the turn. Reward often by walking out in the same direction so you can spiral down again. Over time he will allow you to step his foot like you have a direct line to his foot much like a puppet. Expect

to take weeks to develop your horse’s confidence and ability. 3. Go Forward Forward motion means that the horse moves easily and freely where you want and when you want. You shouldn't have to ask more than once. Forward motion means the front feet keep moving around the back feet with rhythm and consistency. Forward motion means the horse can keep his back end still and pivot (walk around) his inside back leg. Exercises for the back end: Hind quarters in while you spiral your horse down to a smaller circle and half pass. Hind quarter over-engagement exercises will help as well. It is also important to have a horse that back softly and easily. For information on Ken Faulkner courses or DVDs phone 0427732394 or check Facebook or website: www.australiannaturalhorsemanship.com

The Horse Report New bit can provide benefits in all horse disciplines Whether starting young horses, correcting existing mouthing problems, through to performing to the highest level, the Macs Equine Pee Wee Bit may be just what you need. The Pee Wee Bit is proven to provide benefits in all disciplines . For showjumping it lightens the horse up on the front end and transfers the power to the back end where it's needed. In barrel racing, polo and campdrafting it will encourages a more balanced turn at speed as the whole neck comes down over the inside leg ensuring the entire body weight is in the best position. It is an excellent training bit for dressage as it encourages the horse to flex at the pole and be in a great position to work. Eliminating mouthing issues so the horse is relaxed at all times. Riders use the Pee Wee right up until five minutes before their dressage test and then swap into their dressage approved bit and the benefits are obvious. It’s very popular with endurance riders because it gets the horse naturally over the bit rather than getting behind the bit and putting its head in the air. This makes rating the horses speed over the first 20km so much easier especially when a very fit horse just wants to gallop. Trail riders like it because the horse stays relaxed at all times due to elimination of pinching of the tongue and lips by the mouth bar. As tongue pressure is also eliminated, swallowing is not impeded which is a vital advantage for a trail horse. In race horses it prevents lugging, head tossing and tongue over the bit an in driving it has so many advantages. It prevents the horse laying on the bit and so contact is not lost which greatly enhances control. Turning is greatly enhanced. Horse flexes down at the pole so is in a very good position to work. Head stays still due to an absence of mouth irritations Surveys have shown that 80% of horses have low palates and large fleshy tongues. This means that the majority of bits on the market are too thick in the mouth bar and so don't leave enough room in the mouth for the tongue. As a result the tongue lifts the mouth bar up until it contacts the roof of the mouth. The Pee Wee bit eliminates this problem by introducing a thinner mouth bar which leaves plenty of room for the tongue and eliminates contact to the roof of the mouth as well as being lightweight and beautifully shaped to fit over the tongue. Also being a fixed mullen mouth bar there is no "nutcracker "effect which is very disconcerting to horses. The photos to the right show the correct position for all riding disciplines. Note the position of the side bar and how it points back to the rider’s legs. As the mouth bar is aligned with the side bars it gives you a good indication of the position the mouth bar is sitting in the horse's mouth. It is positioned squarely and evenly over the tongue and bars which results in even pressure when rein contact is applied. As a result no discomfort occurs from pinching the sensitive parts of the mouth such as the tongue and lips. It is also important to note that there are no wrinkles or creases in the corner of the horse’s mouth. The mouth bar should only make passive contact when the cheek straps have been set at the correct length. Ensure you can place a couple of fingers between the chin strap and the horse's chin. This strap is not a curb strap and only acts as security in keeping the bit in place and therefore should not put any pressure on the chin. Only by being straight can we harness the power we are trying to create in impulsion or collection. The horse needs to be straight so as to engage and push into the bridle/rider's hands and engage.
