welcome

It’s

Party Time It is hard to believe another summer is almost over and fall is here! I love having my kids home with me during the summer months, but I am ready to get back to routines! And nothing helps me get back into a routine better than working on our 11th annual birthday and party issue! I know party planning, especially birthday parties, can be a lot of work as a parent! My kids both have summer birthdays, and we did two types of parties this year! Jaxson was all about heading over to Galaxy Gaming and having Pizza Ranch delivered while Khloe wanted a big backyard birthday bash with an inflatable from Bounce Around Inflatables and Snow Cone Machine from ABC Rentals. In this issue, we created a list of the best party venues and party services that can make your event extra fun! Whether you are planning something simple or going for an over-the-top party this year, we have the resources here to help! If you are looking for something fun to do for a party or a memory maker as a family, check out SelfieWrld in the Empire Mall. The cover girls (along with Miranda and I) had so much fun checking out all the backdrops! If you don’t have a party to plan in the next few months, don’t worry! The great thing is you can keep our September issue on hand or you can head over to thehoodmagazine.com to find the Party Planning Directory on our website all year long. No matter what month your birthday is in,

we will have the ideas to make it a success waiting here. Last but certainly not least, it was so much fun seeing all the families on the Familyfest Fun Cruise! Fancy the Unicorn was busy this year traveling around to all our amazing stops. I hope you were able to stop by a few businesses to learn what they have to offer for families. We couldn’t do the cruise without all our vendors and sponsors – thank you! The Familyfest team is working on some fun things for 2022! Make sure to follow the Familyfest Facebook Page for our announcement this fall.

Expanded Family Fun Opportunities

Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park

The new school year might be right around the corner, but that doesn’t mean the end of summer fun. Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park has experienced a record year due to recently expanded family fun opportunities and easy access.

The Corn Maze at Jellystone Park™ has continued to improve on the existing maze complex to create an all-day experience that is right for any family in addition to mini-golf, outdoor pool, and the area’s only jumping pillow. “New amenities allow us to expand our offerings during the corn maze season,” said Ray Aljets, General Manager of the campground and corn maze complex. “We will continue to offer the same great maze experience including several family-friendly add-ons that can fill your whole day.” A new mining attraction that gives kids a hands-on experience has been added to an already packed facility featuring an outdoor laser tag arena with 16 state-of-the-art laser tag guns and multiple game modes for all ages. There is also an expanded merchandise and snack area, new restrooms, and additional activities in the heated and cooled recreation center.

Paint your own ceramic figurine, choosing from a wide variety of designs including the one and only Yogi Bear™ himself. They even have custom fall-themed t-shirts that you can tie-dye at the park “The variety of packages and price points available mean there is an option for every family and budget,” Aljets said. “We’re also a destination for those that are traveling in from other states or just making a quick trip from the Sioux Falls area.”

For the last 28 years, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park has focused on quality, family-focused entertainment. Speaking with the park manager and part-owner, Ray Aljets, ‘Hood staff learned he is a 3rd generation owner-operator of the park he co-owns and operates with his parents, Bruce and Donna, and his sister, Christina Lien. Built by his grandparents in 1989, the park continues its family focus, employing extended family including three of Christina’s children and her son-in-law. Aljets is proud of the park’s ability to retain and hire new employees during a tough hiring year. “Despite the employee hiring challenges other businesses faced this year, we were able to quickly fill our workforce needs,” said Aljets. “This is a testament to our employees’ appreciation of our family-focused activities and the interaction with our guests.”

If you are looking to get your camper out for one last weekend, be sure to check into the Halloween-themed weekends through the end of September. There are magic pumpkin patches, site-to-site Trick-or-Treating, Halloween crafts, and much more! Be sure to bring your Halloween costumes for a fun-filled weekend. While pets are welcome in the campground, the corn maze has teamed with the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society to open the corn maze to pets for one day only. Bring your pet for a trip through the corn maze on Sunday, October 6th and 20% of your admission fee will go to the Humane Society! Get the Facts about Concussions

A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head or body. It can happen in any sport – even if the athlete is wearing a helmet. It’s estimated that four million sports-related concussions occur each year. Many of these dangerous brain injuries go unrecognized. Concussions can be difficult to prevent, but there are some steps athletes can take to better protect themselves. Proper gear and playing techniques can offer protection. Athletes should also avoid unnecessary contact in order to minimize their risk of injury.

Symptoms of concussions Because a concussion is a brain injury, it can change an athlete’s thinking, behavior, and physical function. Signs of a concussion include: • Memory and concentration problems • Headache • Dizziness • Confusion • Sensitivity to light and noise • Nausea and vomiting • Loss of consciousness If a concussion is suspected, an athlete should be pulled from a game immediately. They’re at greater risk of further brain injury if they continue playing. Some athletes will avoid reporting their concussion-like symptoms in order to keep playing. That’s why it’s important to educate players about selfreporting if they feel something is wrong. One of

16 |

September 2021 | thehoodmagazine.com

the worst things any athlete can do for their health is to keep playing after a concussion, but most players don’t need to see a doctor right away. After a concussion, athletes need plenty of rest in the first 24 to 48 hours. Players can safely sleep after a brain injury if they’re able to follow a conversation. They should go on walks on the second or third day after their injury and slowly introduce modified activities, depending on their symptoms.

When to seek emergency services An athlete needs medical help as soon as possible if they have these red flag symptoms: • Loss of consciousness for more than 30 seconds • A headache that dramatically worsens over time • Won’t wake up • Can’t recognize familiar people or places • Seizures • Uncontrollable vomiting • Slurred speech As the school-sponsored sports season returns, you can help your child enjoy the game by having important conversations about safety and recognizing the signs if they need to take a break. l

Our Optical Boutique features one of the largest selections of kids’ frames in the area. Cool looks. Great durability. We have something for everyone.

Has your child asked you for a phone yet? Chances are they will soon if they haven’t already with 53% of kids having a smartphone by the age of 11 in the US. While technology can be exciting, helpful, and makes a great gift, there are several steps we recommend taking prior to taking the plunge. • D etermine if they’re ready.

There isn’t a single perfect age to give your child a phone. We recommend talking to your child and making a list of how he or she can make good use of a phone. Make another list of potential problems and concerns. Then, compare the two lists together. As your child grows, be prepared to revisit this again in the future as needs change.

• P ick an appropriate device.

BACK AT SCHOOL WITH

HEALTHY SMILES

We recommend an entry level device such as the Samsung Galaxy A42 or the iPhone SE. Available at a reasonable price and loaded with all the features kids need, they can grow into a premium device when the time is right.

• S et boundaries with Verizon Smart Family. To keep your kids tech

use healthy we recommend using Verizon Smart Family. It helps you limit screen time, filter content, track location and more. It’s your parenting app for the new normal.

Back to School Co-Parenting Summer is over and the school year here! Here are some tips to help have a smooth transition back into the school year while co-parenting: 1. Put your child(ren) first. Effective co-parenting requires the parents to put their personal differences aside and put the needs of the child first. When co-parenting, it is important to focus on what the children need and not what you as the parent want. Doing this can make the child feel loved and supported regardless of which parent they are with.

track and help both parents stay in the loop about what is going on at school. It can be used to track school events, pick-ups, drop-offs, holidays, extracurricular activities, lesson plans, homework, and parenting time. This will also allow each parent to coordinate with the other and can help eliminate controversies and keep everyone on the same page.

2. Communicate, communicate, communicate. Communicating with the other parent is essential to co-parenting. Both parents need to be on the same page. This does not mean you have to agree about everything. It simply means you need to keep each other in the loop, have civil conversations, discuss issues regarding the child, and communicate about schoolwork, activities, and schedules. The more communication that happens between parents, the smoother things will be for your child.

4. Attend important school events with the other parent. It is in the best interest of your child to attend events, such as teacher conferences or performances, together. By attending together, it demonstrates to your child that you care about them first and foremost.

3. Work together to coordinate schedules. Between the day-to-day schoolwork, school events, activities, pick-ups, drop-offs, and your individual work schedules, things can become very hectic. Using a shared calendar, co-parenting application, or other like technology can keep everyone on

5. When conflicts arise, put your child’s interest first. Co-parenting is hard and issues do arise. It is important to go directly to the other parent about the issue. Do not put the child in the middle. Try to avoid discussing the issue in front of the child. The hustle and bustle of school, and all the activities related to it, can make co-parenting hard. Using the above tips can help have a smooth transition into the new school year. l September 2021 | thehoodmagazine.com |

Celebrating a Child’s Birthday After Their Death Ivy Addison was born into Heaven on June 15th, 2019. With no medical reasons as to why her heart stopped beating hours before her delivery, June 15th has been a difficult day to navigate for my family. I can remember the anticipation leading up to her first birthday; not knowing what would trigger me and have me on my knees. The anxiety was almost too much to bear, however, I put on a smile and planned a first birthday party with our immediate family. We ate cake & released balloons. Nevertheless, the exhaustion kicked in shortly after, and I was thankful I had taken the week off from work, so I could rest.

I started out the morning with a solo two-mile run to clear my head and honor Ivy’s two years in Heaven. We then spent the next few hours on the golf course, as that is a place that flutters with dragonflies and is a reminder to us that Ivy is never far away. We went out to eat, sang her “Happy Birthday”, had cake & bought balloons and yellow roses. We tried to do all we could to find true joy in a day that causes us much heartache and grief. We will always celebrate our little girl and will do whatever feels right in that moment. Everyone journeys through grief at their own pace. Things you may find comforting this year can evolve into different things next year. Keep a fluid mindset and follow what is on your heart, there is no right or wrong. l

I am a person driven by routine and tradition; I initially wanted to continue the same celebration from Ivy’s first birthday for years to come but I quickly remembered how drained it made me feel. For her second birthday, I decided to handle it a little differently; we get to make that decision. There is no playbook for how to handle grief. There isn’t a step-by-step instruction manual telling us how to celebrate the birthday of our child who is gone from our arms. For Ivy’s second birthday, my husband, our fiveyear-old daughter, and I planned a day for just us.

Until we meet again, sweet Ivy! Fly high, dragonfly! 30 |

How to help your child when they are

Not Invited to Parties Although we’d like to shield our kids from the hurt of not receiving a birthday party invitation, events like this can provide unique learning opportunities. Pause and then use the situation to model and teach adaptive coping and resiliency skills that are necessary for building and maintaining social relationships.

As part of the validation, you might find it beneficial to first help your child determine the reasoning behind her feelings. If the hurt stems from believing the other child was her friend, use the opportunity to discuss and validate how your child is feeling confused, disappointed, and/or hurt. This also provides an opportunity to teach your child how to use and practice appropriate coping strategies. An adaptive coping strategy can include teaching your child positive self-talk, such as “I am kind,”“I have friends that like to play with me,” or “I’m fun to be with.” This positive self-talk emphasizes her strengths that she can use to build relationships with new and current friends. Additionally, consider motivating and supporting your child’s friendship development in various activities. This could include encouraging your child

to invite a neighbor or a friend from daycare or extracurricular activity over to play. In some cases, your child may benefit from direct social skills instruction to learn how to interact with peers more effectively. This can include providing parent-directed play as a model of good play skills with similar-age peers. This can also include role-playing with your child(ren) on how to meet a new friend, ask to join a group, or play with another child. Comparatively, if your child is sad because she is worried about missing out, consider planning a fun event with your child while praising the adaptation to the change in plan. This encourages future flexibility when other plans don’t work out. Altogether, your child will likely gauge her response using your response as a guide. Therefore, remember to monitor your overt reactions to the event and provide a calm, positive model of these suggested strategies. This will help to encourage your child to utilize adaptive coping styles in similar situations. l

Adaptive coping skills include identifying emotions, regulating emotions, and determining appropriate responses. Validating your child’s feelings while modeling an appropriate response is important to building resiliency.

Make the Air You

Breathe Inside Better When people think of air pollution, they tend to think of the air outside. But air pollution also affects indoor air. Given that most people spend, on average, 87% of their time indoors, it is important to ensure the air you breathe most often is better. In our part of the world, we might even spend more time indoors given our two seasons of Hot and Cold. While we benefit from fewer pollutantcausing factors than more populated areas, i.e., traffic, manufacturing, mining, etc., we still suffer the drawbacks of airborne pollutants resulting from those factors and others like wildfires and wildlife. Other factors can include dangerous gas leaks and contaminants brought into the home by pets. Older homes may contain asbestos, lead particles, and radon. Be sure to consult a professional if your older home may have these contaminants present.

Here are some other ways to improve the quality of your indoor habitat. • Change the AC filter. We’re a broken record on this, but it is a simple, affordable, HUGE step you can take in bettering your indoor air quality. • Change other filters. Huh? Think about other appliances that have a filter...vacuum cleaner, clothes dryer, bathroom vents, kitchen vents. Speaking of kitchen vents…

•U se it whenever you cook. Gas stoves emit carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide, as do electric ranges in lower levels. If your kitchen is ventless, crack a window. • Clean rugs and carpets regularly. Contaminants love to hang out in rugs and carpets. Vacuum (with that clean filter) your floor coverings once a week to minimize contaminant spread. • Check and clean air ducts, especially in older homes. Make a point to have them professionally cleaned periodically. • Humidity breeds mold and mildew and the presence of both can cause respiratory issues. Invest in a dehumidifier if your HVAC system does not include one. • Place plants around the home to freshen the air. Plants are nature’s air filters and they enhance the decor of your house. If you feel your home is particularly challenged when it comes to air pollution, contact an HVAC professional. l
