Taylor Templeton didn’t celebrate a birthday until he was 8 years old. Before that, he lived in an orphanage in Bangkok, Thailand, where, as he recalls, “life there was very routine— basic needs came first, and with so many children, individual things like birthdays just weren’t acknowledged.”
That changed when he was adopted and moved to western Nebraska. Though he didn’t speak English at the time, Taylor remembers sensing something big was happening. “I remember sensing, deep in my body, that my life was about to shift in a big way.”
His first birthday celebration was simple but unforgettable. “My parents threw a small party with all the traditional things: cake, balloons, and presents. I was just in awe, ‘Is this really all for me?’ It felt unreal, like something out of a dream. A part of me even wondered if I deserved it.”
That moment became a turning point. “It was more than a birthday,” he said. “It was the beginning of feeling chosen and celebrated.”
Today, Taylor and his wife, Kandra, are raising four children—Marcus, Jalen, Miah, and Olivia—and birthdays in their home are intentionally meaningful. Not having a birthday celebration until he was eight has strongly shaped how he approaches his own children’s birthdays. He remembers how invisible he felt in his early years, and that is something he never wants his kids to feel in any way.
Taylor explained that the celebrations don’t have to be extravagant to be powerful. “Birthdays in our home are a big deal—not necessarily in terms of money or extravagance, but in making each child feel seen, loved, and celebrated.” Taylor and Kandra have created birthday traditions for their family. Things like letting them pick out a special meal and writing a card each year highlighting who they are and how loved they are.
Those small but intentional moments, he says, are deeply personal. “It’s my way of giving them what I didn’t have, and in doing so, I get to heal a little bit of that part of myself, too.”
When it comes to advice for other parents, Taylor encourages keeping the focus on the child. That could mean incorporating their favorite things or creating family traditions reserved just for birthdays. As kids grow older, inviting their input helps them feel respected and heard.
Most importantly: “Celebrating a birthday in a meaningful way doesn’t have to be expensive or elaborate. To me, it’s about making the person feel seen, valued, and loved. The best birthdays aren’t about perfection; they’re about connection. Let it be heartfelt, not just picture-perfect.”

Nestled just outside the hustle of Sioux Falls, the Benson Equestrian Center is more than a place to ride horses—it’s a space where hearts are healed, confidence is rebuilt, and families reconnect with what really matters. For owner Laura Benson, the dream of starting a horse-centered youth and family program came after a successful career in business.
“I spent a decade building a very successful business,” Laura says. “But there’s just a different level of fulfillment you get when you’re one-on-one with people, helping and serving and working with animals. Even when there’s work to do at the barn, it doesn’t feel like work.”
That sense of peace and purpose is what Laura wanted to create for other families—especially kids. In today’s fast-paced world, filled with pressure to
perform and an overabundance of screens, it’s easy for kids to lose touch with themselves and the natural world around them. At Benson Equestrian Center, the goal is to replace that pressure with presence.
Laura knows firsthand the impact horses can have— because she watched them help her own daughter heal.
Shortly after the family purchased the property that would become the Benson Equestrian Center, Laura’s daughter Charlie was diagnosed with Perthes disease—a rare childhood hip condition that causes the hip bone to weaken and fracture easily. “She couldn’t run or jump. Even riding hurt too much,” Laura shares. “For almost two years, she couldn’t do the things the other kids were doing.”
It was a difficult season, but Charlie found comfort from being with her horse. Being at the barn, where presence matters more than perfection, was grounding. When Charlie was finally able to return to horseback riding, something in her shifted. “The first time I saw her back on a horse, I saw her confidence return,” Laura says.
It’s that kind of healing and growth that Laura wants to offer to other children and families. At Benson Equestrian Center, kids don’t have to perform. They don’t have to be the best or meet anyone’s expectations. They just get to be.
“They’re good enough exactly the way they are,” Laura says. “And they can learn confidence with an animal who loves them unconditionally.”
The center runs a variety of programs, including camps, ranch experiences, and birthday parties. Some of these programs are intentionally faith-based, while others focus simply on providing a peaceful, supportive environment. But no matter the format, all sessions are screen-free.
“There are so many kids who are stuck behind screens,” Laura says. “And I want to be a sliver of hope—an alternative where they can trade screens for saddles, and where they can just be kids again.”
The impact isn’t just for kids, either. Laura is also launching faith-based women’s retreats at the center, designed to help moms and women step away from the pressure of everyday life and reconnect with peace. Also based at the Benson Equestrain Center
is HorsePower, a local non-profit that uses horses for therapy. The work Horse Power does points back to the incredible healing power of horses.
We offer two different birthday party packages: a Horse Riding Birthday Party and a Mini Highland Birthday Party. Celebrate an unforgettable birthday Birthday Party at the Barn!
At Benson Equestrian Center, horses aren’t just animals. They’re partners in healing, in learning, and in rediscovering joy. Sometimes, the most meaningful growth begins in the saddle, and at the Benson Equestrian Center, there’s plenty of room to ride.
Birthdays are some of the most joyful days of the year for families, but planning one can come with plenty of pressure. Finding a venue or service that fits your family perfectly can be hard. That’s where we come in!
Our Birthday and Party Planning Guide is packed with fun, local resources to help make your child’s special day stress-free and unforgettable. Whether you’re planning a cozy celebration or a big bash, you’ll find ideas and inspiration to bring their birthday dreams to life—right here in the Sioux Falls Area!

When your child is struggling in school—especially with something as fundamental as reading— it’s hard not to feel helpless. That’s how Amber and Byron felt before they discovered vision therapy at Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center.
Amber’s son, Cameron, had been facing significant challenges. “He has a lazy eye, is farsighted, and has astigmatism,” Amber explained. “He would read the same word differently in the same passage, struggle with blending and decoding words, and couldn’t repeat multi-syllable words accurately.” A recommendation from their eye doctor led the Schafersmans to Visions Therapy Center and, ultimately, to a path forward.
Cameron began vision therapy—and he never looked back.
Cameron started vision therapy with Tricia, a therapist at Visions, and quickly found it to be something he looked forward to. “Cam was always excited to go,” said Amber. “He had fun learning and absolutely loves Tricia!” For Amber, the experience was just as positive. “I looked forward to taking Cameron, hearing about his progress, and seeing how excited he was when he was learning a new skill that Tricia worked with him on. We learned so much about how Cameron was seeing and
processing things. Simple things like riding a bike were difficult for him, and we couldn’t understand why.” Cameron’s vision was processing information differently and just needed some help.
The changes, both in and outside of the classroom, have been significant. “Cameron’s confidence in the classroom and when trying new things has soared. He’s made immense progress in reading and writing,” Amber shared. She also loved that Tricia worked with Cameron on helpful coping strategies he could use when faced with overwhelming moments at school.
Amber encourages other families to look into vision therapy at Visions Eye Care + Therapy Center. “The confidence alone that it brings your child is 100% worth it,” she said. “Seeing your child thrive, feel confident, and keep up with his peers is exciting and heartwarming. Cameron wouldn’t be where he is today without Visions!”

For the Irvine family of Sioux Falls, summer brings more than sunshine-it brings the joy of baseball. For the past few years, their daughter Macy has been part of the Miracle League of Sioux Falls. The Miracle League provides an adaptive baseball program to youth and adults who may not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in baseball.
“Macy loves going, and we love that she has this opportunity,” says mom Sara Irvine. “It’s great for her to get the social interaction as well as the physical exercise.”
Adaptive programming like the Miracle League provides more than just an outlet for fun; it creates a sense of belonging. For Macy, being part of the team is meaningful on multiple levels. Her older sister played softball when she was younger, and now Macy gets to experience the same thrill of the game, just on her own terms.
Programs like Miracle League are crucial for families who may not always find a place in traditional leagues. “It helps kids feel included,” Sara explains.
“They get to do the same things their peers do, even if it’s in a different setting or performed in a different way.”
The community that forms around adaptive sports is an amazing one to be apart of. At Miracle League games, families, volunteers, and athletes come together in a shared celebration of ability. Volunteers like Ball Buddies play a key role in creating a positive and safe experience for participants.
“They treat the kids like any other kid, and they are always so nice,” says Sara. “I appreciate their willingness to volunteer and help with these programs. Without them, the programs would not be what they are today-they may not even be possible.”
The Irvines first learned about Miracle League through another parent during their time at HorsePower, an adaptive horseback riding program. Like many families, they found the path to adaptive activities through word of mouth and community connection.
Sara encourages other families and community members to support programs like Miracle League however they can—whether through volunteering, attending fundraisers, or simply spreading the word.
“Just knowing these programs are out there is a huge help,” she says.

• Delayed speech or trouble expressing needs
• Struggles with transitions or new routines
• Sensory sensitivities (avoiding textures, loud sounds, or certain movements)

What are some back-toschool health tips?
Immunizations – It is common to be anxious, but keep in mind that all recommended childhood vaccinations are monitored for safety.
If you experience symptoms such as muscle aches, soreness, or fever with fatigue, this IS common and suggests your body is responding appropriately to the vaccine.
Healthy routines – It is important to introduce healthy behavior habits as soon as a child becomes more independent. Limiting screen time is key in encouraging healthy peer-to-peer interactions, as well as incorporating physical activity and creativity in the form of the arts.
Vision and hearing screenings – Vision testing should be done at least once from ages 3 to 5. Hearing screenings should begin at 1 and 3 months of age.

It seems like summer has just begun, but back-to-school season will be here before we know it. There’s always a mental checklist echoing through our homes. New sneakers? 3 Labeled water bottles? 3 But there’s one essential item that often gets pushed to the bottom: vaccines.
Think of vaccines like a team of superheroes— batch-delivered to your child’s immune system— ready to battle measles, whooping cough, meningitis, and more. These aren’t relics from history; outbreaks are happening right now, and it’s a real risk if our collective defense weakens. Everyone knows that school is a hotbed for sniffles, coughs, and spreadable illnesses. Getting kids vaccinated is like providing a shield that keeps them and their classmates safer.
We’re big fans of the phrase “it takes a village,” and nowhere is it truer than with vaccines. Community immunity, once called “herd immunity,” occurs when enough people are vaccinated to stop diseases from spreading. That means babies too young for shots, kids with cancer, pregnant moms, and grandparents all find protection in the immunity provided by their neighbors. When you roll up your sleeve at the pharmacy, clinic, or doctor’s office, it’s an act of community care.
We understand people worry. Parents often ask, “Can we space out shots?” or “Do we really need them all?” Medical experts like the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) have spent decades studying the answers. Vaccines are safe, the side effects are generally mild, and the recommended schedule gives the strongest protection at the ages that need it most. Spacing out vaccines or skipping doses might feel gentler, but it also leaves a vulnerability window big enough for disease to slip through. And no one wants their child or classroom to be that open door.
Vaccines are more than just a medical task—they’re an act of care that strengthens our community. As the school year approaches, ensure your child’s immunizations are up to date. Vaccinated children are not only protected from preventable diseases but are also ready to engage and thrive in the classroom. By vaccinating, you’re helping create a safer, healthier environment where every child has the chance to succeed.
