Fact: A single JUUL pod contains as much nicotine as a pack of 20 regular cigarettes Young brains continue to develop until about age 25 and nicotine can harm a growing brain – it is known to damage brain circuits that control attention, learning, and susceptibility to addiction E-cigarette use among middle and high school students has now surpassed use of regular cigarettes and continues to rise

JUULing is dangerous. The newest e-cigarettes are shaped like flash drives and are being used at alarming rates by teens. JUUL and MarkTen Elite are two popular brands. These devices are very discrete and come in an array of tasty flavors targeted at kids.

Mom, everybody is JUULing. It’s no big deal... way safer than smoking, and it’s fun.

Some don’t contain nicotine. It’s just harmless flavor and water vapor...

Whoa – I didn’t know that. I think I might stay away from that stuff. So not worth it.

welcome

My oldest learned last year when he went on his first summer break that most moms and dads don’t get summer breaks too. He thought I should have the summer off just like him. I told him I wish I did too! Having our oldest one in elementary school, we are learning how precious the summertime can be. Everyone in my neighborhood knows they’re going to find me playing outside with my kids all summer long. If we aren’t home, it means we are off playing somewhere. We have created the ultimate summer bucket list for you this year. We have so many local things to do as a family! You could do something fun every day during summer break. If you are looking to leave the area, we also have some ideas within a few hours of Sioux Falls. Once you get through our bucket list, check out our calendar on our website. We have thousands of events to attend this summer. Did you know you can even add the events right to your personal calendar now with just a click of a button? You will never forget an event again. Make sure to mark your calendar for July 27th for our FamilyFest event. We may be biased, but we think it’s the best summer event for families! You don’t want to miss the pictures in this issue. We had so many fun ones from Facebook, it was hard to pick which ones to use. We have lots of fun photoshoots coming up, so make sure to join our email list at thehoodmagazine.com for all of the details. You are also going to meet our first Inspiring Kid in this issue! She is outstanding and has accomplished so much for her age. From volunteering in the community, to even setting up a fundraiser for a classmate who was injured in an ATV accident, she is going above and beyond to make a difference. You can learn more about her on page 16. If you know an outstanding kid in your community, be sure to nominate them at thehoodmagazine.com.

Capturing Your Life on Video

by Hannah Parker, Pasque Creative

Take a stroll with me back in time when your parents used to get out the old VHS recorder on their shoulder and follow you around the house documenting all the cute and everyday things that made your family YOU! Those films (if you can still access them!) are priceless. You see the smiling faces and antics of family you have loved and, in some cases, lost. You can hear the laughter, see the connection and enjoy the joy of being together. Now, what do we have with today’s technology that allows these same types of keepsakes? Cell phone clips are poor quality and often only seconds long. If you’re anything like me, upon watching those clips years later, you wish you would have just kept recording longer, so you could relive the moments of baby’s laughter, children small and real-life connection. What’s more, YOU aren’t in these clips! THIS is why Keepsake Family Films are growing in popularity, and you should consider getting your own family in front of the lens.

Summer Savings!

Have your kids outgrown their summer clothes from last year? Get to Once Upon a Child today and get them stylish clothes that fit! We have an unmatched selection, value pricing, and we pay cash on the spot for what they’ve outgrown.

Keepsake Family Films document everyday life in your home, yard, neighborhood walk, or playing at the park with your family. They capture the special connections, laughter, and love that makes your crazy family so incredibly special. Usually filming takes between 90 minutes and two hours. There is no posing or stress of performing a certain way, just the videographer joining your day and filming you all connecting and enjoying the activities you like to do together. Usually the videographer will ask for a technology- free day, meaning you keep the TV, tablets, and phones off and use this time to reconnect with your family and really drink in each other’s company. Many people have commented that they leave the session feeling stress-free and even renewed as a family, just by being together. So, what are you waiting for? Keepsake Films are growing in popularity around the world, and no matter what life season you are in, these are beautiful and special moments you will love re-living with your family for YEARS to come! l

Beating the Rainy-Day Blues

After a long winter and very wet spring, everyone is ready for the sun and fun of SUMMER! Playing at the park, swimming, bike riding, camping, going to the park … all great ways to stay active outside in the summer sun. But not every day is sunny. What can you do on those rainy day or days when it is too hot to be outside? Are TV and video games the only thing to keep your mind and body active when you’re stuck inside? Absolutely not! Here are some great rainy-day boredom busters: 1. C heck out area museums like the Museum of Visual Materials, Old Courthouse Museum or the Washington Pavilion that offer hands-on exhibits and activities to keep your mind – and your hands – busy. The exhibits are continually changing so there is always something new to experience. 2. V isit your local branch of Siouxland Libraries and see what new books are in. The library also has regular activities to keep young minds reading and learning during the summer months.

10 |

May/June 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

3. I f you’re stuck at home, chase away the rainy-day blues with some colorful coffee filters. With just a little food coloring and some folded coffee filters, you can create some beautiful designs to hang in your windows. Have leftover cups from the family picnic? Use them with some cardboard or cookie sheets and see if you can build a tower that supports your weight. 4. G o on an Alphabet Scavenger Hunt! Look around and see if you can find something that starts with each letter of the alphabet. A, apple. B, bed. C, clock, etc. You might have to get creative with X and Z, unless you just happen to see a zebra playing a xylophone! Your days spent inside don’t have to be dull and boring. With a little imagination and creativity, you can learn AND have fun. l

Making Memories Without Technology How roller-skating became a timeless tradition for one family – enough to put down the phone and make lasting memories. When Allana was little, she and her twin sister had the chance to go roller-skating for birthday parties and a couple of school events. After these few experiences out in the rink, though, Allana admittedly says she “fell out of it.”

is a regular event for her and her family. Allana says she went ahead and even bought a pair of roller-skates for herself because of this. In fact, everyone in the family has a pair, including their two-year-old!

Several years later, Allana’s daughter was invited by her friends to go to Skate City, the local skating rink, to celebrate her birthday. Allana and the rest of her family ended up tagging along as well. Allana and her husband didn’t give this much thought, thinking they wouldn’t be the ones skating, anyway. However, they and all of the other adults soon found themselves out there in the rink, having just as much fun as the kids. The joy Allana had felt while skating as a child ran through her once more and she remembered how wonderful the experience had been so long ago. Allana recalled how, before, it was “really hard to find something that’s fun for everyone, especially when I have kids that are four years apart, but this is it.” Now, going to the rink to roller-skate

Roller-skating allows for “getting active together instead of just sitting,” Allana says. When you’re being active through roller-skating, it’s easier to put the phone away and simply enjoy the time together with your family. Sometimes, finding something to do that’s exciting and entertaining for the whole family can be incredibly difficult. Roller-skating proves to be at least one activity that helps to solve that problem, providing a rink for families to come and make memories that last in the years to follow. l

rTdZEE! a Y YAH The beautiful weather during the summer months might not seem like the obvious time to plan family DIY projects, but Summer can be the perfect time to work together on making fun and memories.

Outdoor yard games are always a blast. Yard Yahtzee is an easy one to create, even for the beginner DIY’er. Here’s what we used and how we created it:

by Museum of Visual Materials

Supplies: • 5 Wooden blocks. You can find wooden blocks at craft stores, or you could cut pieces of a 4x4. •W hite paint. You could use either regular paint and a small brush, or a can of spray paint works well too. • Black paint.

Instructions: To make your dice, start by painting each block white. When your white paint is dry, you can add the dots of the dice with black paint. Do this by either painting the dots with a small craft paint brush, or you can find circular shaped foam stamp brushes that make the job really easy!

ARTROCKS

An inexpensive boredom buster for this summer is painting rocks! Use up the paint at your house by gathering rocks and designing them! Turn it into a scavenger hunt finding rocks. Maybe the rock shape reminds you of a shark, create an ocean theme rock pile with rock-sharks and rock-fish. Get creative using your imagination! When finished, place them in your backyard for decoration or an art rock hunt later. Just don’t mow them over! Other great ideas for your new fabulously decorated art rocks:

Keep your dice in a cute bucket and enjoy some summer fun right in your back yard.

• Decorative handmade paperweights.

Some other ideas for outdoor games are:

• Remember the crayon melt canvas projects? Use a hair dryer to melt crayons onto your rock.

Tic-Tac-Toe: Paint the grid on a piece of plywood. Have your kids gather rocks and paint them different colors instead of the traditional “x” and “o”.

• Join The Kindness Rock Movement and write a simple message to inspire happiness. Use acrylic paint, and then a sharpie to create a sweet message. Encourage your children to be positive and be kind when you place your rocks around the neighborhood. It will be sure to bring a smile to someone, and spread kindness. Use sayings like, “Inhale Courage, Exhale Fear” or “You’re beautiful”. People find a little bright, happy moment when they come across something unexpectedly cheerful. l

Twister: use sidewalk chalk to make the circles on your driveway. Or for a more permanent option you could spray paint colored circles in your grass!

• Attach a magnet to the small rocks and place them on your fridge or give the rock-magnets as gifts.

A Checklist for

by Audra Staebell, University Center Sioux Falls

Checking Out College For those families with students entering junior and senior year, there is no time like the summer to include some college visits into the vacation itinerary or to schedule trips explicitly for this purpose. When planning those college visits (remember, colleges are much quieter in the summer, so you may have to revisit your top choices in the fall for a complete experience), there is a multitude of features to consider – some for students, some for parents, and some for both. The entire process can seem overwhelming, but it needn’t be if families are armed with a checklist to help focus the visit. The checklist below (you do not have to complete ALL the points in the checklist – focus on what’s crucial to your needs and goals) will help parents and students think about the important details and narrow the search when it comes time to submit those applications.

Lifejackets are an important aspect of summer living. Before the season is in full swing check out these tips and frequently asked questions. Newborns to small children can benefit from a properly researched product. Search for the Standards: The U.S. Coast Guard sets the standard on PFD (Personal Flotation Device) safety and has to test and certify any life jacket that is going to be sold as a lifesaving device to the public anywhere in the USA. If the life jacket is certified by the U.S. Coast Guard, it is required to be marketed and sold with a “Think Safe” booklet attached to the PFD. It will have a Coast Guard Seal on the bottom center of the front cover. Life jackets and Newborns: PFD/Life Jackets are made down to newborn sizes, usually from 0 - 30 pounds. If an infant is going in the water to swim, they most certainly should be wearing a lifesaving device. Please note that all life jackets fit differently and infants are not all the same fit. It is always better to test fit with a professional before using any life jacket with an infant in the water. Fitting: No general fitting requirements, but a properlyfitted life jacket should be tight but comfortable

with no gaps between the user’s shoulders or sides. The vest should fit snug and close to the skin all the way around. To check the fit of a vest, put it on and tighten down the straps or zipper. Then, make sure when pulling up on the vest from the bottom, that it does not slide up easily under or over the chin.

Expiration: PFD’s typically do not have an expiration date. However, every time before using you should inspect for damage. If the jacket has a foam core, make sure it has not been crushed in storage or during the previous use, as this can affect buoyancy in the water. Neoprene life vests usually carry a higher price tag but typically fit more comfortably, retain less water, and tend to hold up longer over time. Storing: The best way to store a life vest would be to make sure it is fully dry then place it on a hanger or shelf in a dry area with low moisture. If put away wet, they can start to grow mold, or deteriorate. l

Custody Agreements: How to Set Summer Schedules

32 |

March 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

Summer is here and the children are excited. However, parents who are trying to set a summer parenting time schedule may not be. Parents who share custody of their children and are co-parenting often struggle with setting a summer parenting time schedule. When children are in school, families usually have a set schedule with agreed parenting time days and transitions. But, during the summer, a more flexible schedule can be used because a set schedule is not necessary to accommodate school and other activities. Communicating with your co-parent about summer plans and how best to organize your parenting time is helpful to make a stress-free summer for everyone. Here are some simple tips for parents to use: 1. P lan ahead – Work with your co-parent to plan ahead and let each other know of vacation plans, summer camps, family gettogethers, special dates, and other big events. Notifying each other of these dates early helps avoid conflict and allows you to create a schedule that accommodates the events. For the benefit of the children, it is important to try to work with your co-parent so the summer is fun for the kids and they can make some fantastic childhood memories with both parents. 2. T alk with the kids – When making a summer parenting schedule, it is important to talk with your children. This allows you to factor in their preferences and what they may like to do. This really helps children, especially older children, feel more comfortable with the summer schedule. 3. B e flexible – Summer is about spending quality time together and making lasting memories. When working out a schedule, be flexible. It is okay to accommodate the other parent’s request and work together. By working together and cooperating with each other, you can create a schedule you are both happy with and where the children benefit. Use these tips to help set a parenting schedule that makes everyone happy. Don’t spend your summer worrying about parenting time, and spend it making lasting memories with your children! l

Summer of Swim: Staying Active no Matter your Age Kids, teens, adults and seniors can all enjoy the benefits of a dip in the pool or the lake this summer. Not only is swim-time a great way to cool off when the temperatures start to rise, but swimming is an exercise you can do throughout your life even if you’re a little late to the game. “Everyone can learn to swim, and we start at all levels,” says Kathy Grady, the aquatics supervisor at the Sanford Wellness Center at 49th and Oxbow. “It’s a great thing to do swimming lessons because just having someone to point out a few things to you is going to help tremendously.” The American Red Cross offers swimming lessons and private lessons for adults and children as young as 6-months-old and up. Grady says the earlier you can start lessons with your kids the better. “Teaching them the basic rescue skills, how to flip over on their back, how to get to the wall and the safety around the pool is important for children at a young age, because water is such an attraction,” says Grady. Additional programs are offered to more serious swimmers looking for an organized workout or training for a triathlon.

Whether it’s for fun, rehabilitation, or a way to shake up your workout, swimming is one of the best ways to work your entire muscle groups says Grady. “It’s good for your cardiovascular system and endurance, plus the buoyancy of water also puts less stress on your muscles and joints” explains Grady. “It’s just so easy on your body,” she says. “Overall, it just makes you feel so much better.” Even if you’re a little nervous about getting in the water, there’s no better place to start than swimming lessons. “Even people who can’t swim or are scared of the water can still do shallow water classes,” says Grady. “It all depends on what their goals are. Swimming is all inclusive. Just have a swimming suit and a desire to get in the pool.” l

What to Look for in a

Travel Pillow

More often than not, we are so excited for that upcoming trip that we neglect to consider how to stay comfortable during said trip. Train, plane, or automobile – each of them will place your neck and spine into a compromising position. What, exactly, constitutes as a ‘proper’ travel pillow? It is all about the shape and the level of support it offers. The most common travel pillow is likely that small, u-shaped pillow that is filled with little foam balls. What you will find when you use that u-shaped pillow is one of two things occurring when you’re using it: your neck constantly falls too far forward, causing harm, or the filling all settles to one side of the pillow leaving you and your neck imbalanced. Neither of these things are good, and each of them will result in strain and stress on your cervical spine. Now, what about sleeping? A reclining position is how most people find themselves when they’re in travel. Whether that is slight on an airplane or up against your car window, one thing is for certain – the perfect recliner chair that is so loved at home will not be along for your ride. Falling asleep with a less than ideal travel pillow seems fine until you wake up with a horrifically-labored range of motion. Pay attention to the design and structure

of the pillow for optimal support. This will prevent your head from bobbing and help to keep your spine in proper alignment. Travel should be fun - not painful! Heading to the beach or making your way to visit extended family and friends should not come with the sorry aftermath of poor travel accessories. Do yourself a favor and ditch the donut. l

Play + Therapy

Every adult can remember a time in their childhood when they engaged in some type of play activity. Maybe the activity was playing with toy figurines, dressing up in play clothes, engaging in make-believe or playing a game of kick ball or tag. One is reminded of the joy and positive feelings that play induces for an individual. When we become teenagers and eventually adults, we leave behind the activities that once gave us joy and satisfaction, and find other activities that are similar (hobbies, sporting activities, dance lessons, etc.) to fill the void that leaving play behind, brings into our lives. Play for children involves much more than enjoyment. It is the way in which they act out their emotions, test their ability to be successful, or experience defeat. Most importantly, it is the way

44 |

May/June 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

they learn how to navigate the world and interact with others. It promotes the development of cognitive reasoning, emotional regulation, physical endurance, and social interaction. In other words, play is essential to the healthy development of all children. In recent years, play has been a topic of research regarding its importance and the negative impact children experience when time isn’t set aside for children to participate in free play. The American Academy of Pediatrics (2007) made recommendations for pediatricians to discuss with families the

health/wellness

benefits of free play. This encouragement came from the growing number of children presenting with depression, anxiety and health issues related to non-activity and play. Mental Health professionals have undertaken the job of bringing play into the therapeutic setting by providing play therapy. This type of therapy has proven to be the most effective way to help children ages 0-12 deal with mental health issues before they become chronic and impact their life as an adult. Children cannot express their inner turmoil in the same manner that adults can. Through a child’s play, the toys become their words and the play becomes their language. Play therapists work with children in a play setting by watching the themes of their play, creating a safe environment in which they can work out their frustrations and challenges, and helping them to identify and develop the strengths that are inherent in each child.

Theraplay is an approach to child and family therapy, for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful enjoyment. Families are taught games and activities to enhance their interactions and build the capacity of each family member, to become a cohesive family unit that can withstand the many challenges life can present. l

PICNICKING Simplified

The traditional picnic with a blanket, a basket, and the family on a leisurely, sunny day still holds a special appeal, especially in our ever-busier lives. Afterall, being able to enjoy a relaxing and fun outing with our families is something to be cherished. Here are some things to make picnicking even simpler so you can focus on making memories while you’re out there with your family:

A basic checklist to help you remember all the odds and ends and other essentials you may need…

CHECKLIST q Plates, utensils (including serving spoo ns) q Sunscreen q Insect repellent q Wet wipes q Hand sanitizer q Blanket q Knife q C utting board q Napkins q Mini condiments/seasonings (Here’s a use for all of those extra packets from restaurants!)

great tip: d

q Kitchen towels (for wiping off sweating water bottles or covering food to keep out insects)

q Trash bags q Ice packs for keeping food and/or drin ks cold

q Camera & portable charger q Picnic chairs (for anyone who may not want to sit on the ground)

q Flashlight (for use in the evening hour s)

q First-aid supplies (in case of the possible May/June 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

scrape or scratch)

Some tips and ideas for when you’re packing and picking up afterwards…

• U sing stackable containers for food can make packing up all the easier and keep things from being tousled around during the trip. • T rash bags can be incredibly useful (and not just for cleanup). Keep in mind that they can serve as rain ponchos in a pinch. And, in case the ground where you will be laying out your blanket is wet or damp, a couple of slicedopen trash bags can be positioned under your blanket to provide an extra barrier. • F rozen bottles of water and other drinks can serve double duty as ice packs in the cooler and (once they’ve thawed a bit while everyone’s having fun) something cool to drink. • A simple tray can be set on the blanket to serve as a flat surface for drinks and other containers. • F ood safety is a top concern when picnicking. Make sure to properly store, chill, and wrap anything to keep it from spoiling. Wrap sandwiches well to ensure their freshness. • I f you have access to an open flame (whether it be a grill top or firepit), your local bakery just might know of a number of hearty breads that can hold up well when toasted. GRILL FOR IT!

And some final thoughts to inspire you…

• T o make an ordinary picnic a bit more extraordinary, why not try giving your outing with the family a theme? For example, pizza pinwheels could make for a fantastic finger food at an Italian-styled picnic! • A picnic doesn’t always have to be an overly active endeavor. Reading and coloring can be a more relaxing way to spend part of the afternoon together. For a fun little game, try asking each other to draw what they see while looking at differently-shaped clouds floating by in the sky. l

Setting Your Lawn Up for Success Spring is the critical time to set your lawn up for success for the rest of the growing season. By this time, you should be wrapping up any seeding of bare spots, dog spots, and winter kill. After your seed has been mowed twice, it is a good time to apply pre-emergent to the turf before the lilacs are done blooming. Your lawn will be growing aggressively during the month of May, so you may need to mow up to two times per week. In order to keep your turf at optimal health, make sure you do not cut more than 1/3 of the leaf on any single mowing. You can do this by setting your mower blade at no less than 3” in height. All of this growth is going to be requiring a lot of macronutrients from the soil, so applying a balanced fertilizer is very important during this stage of your lawn’s lifecycle. The final piece to the puzzle is to make sure you utilize broadleaf weed control to clear out broadleaf weeds such as unsightly dandelions, thistles, and clover.

Check it off your list: •A pply Pre-Emergent. Pre-emergent (also called crabgrass preventative) applied around the time the lilacs are blooming prevents over grassy weeds such as crabgrass and sandburs. Do not use pre-emergent on any areas that you are

48 |

May/June 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

reseeding, as the pre-emergent can cause injury to the new turf. •F ertilize! Get a jump-start on the spring greenup by fertilizing with a balanced fertilizer. •A pply broad-leaf weed control to eliminate weeds like thistles and clover. •L ook for low, settled areas maybe from excessive dripping water, where a stump was ground down, or erosion. Haul in some good quality dirt to level these areas out and re-seed. The last frost date for the Sioux Falls area is May 2nd. This is the perfect time to transplant flowers, tomatoes, and peppers, and plant vegetable seeds such as melons and cucumbers. Remember Mother’s Day is Sunday May 12, 2019 so make sure to love on your Mum, (pun intended) and give her the gift of a beautiful lawn and garden for Mother’s Day. l

Safety Tips for Spring Driving Now that the snow is gone and the flowers are blooming, many are preparing to hit the road for another season of exploring and adventure. However, it’s important to understand that each season change brings different driving conditions. Here are some safety tips to keep you and your family safe on the road this spring: Check Your Air Pressure During the winter months, cold temperatures cause tires to lose air and become underinflated. As temperatures start to rise, tires can become overinflated. Each situation can lead to increased wear, as well as poor handling and gas mileage. To ensure your tires are performing their best, check to make sure they are inflated to the manufacturer recommended level (found in the driver’s door or in your owner’s manual) at least once a month and especially before long trips. To make it even easier, you can always visit Discount Tire for a free air check and tire inspection!

Check Your Tread Depth Your tread depth plays a pivotal role in wet weather driving. It’s important that your tires have enough tread depth to evacuate water from the contact patch and properly grip the road. You can easily check your tread depth by performing the penny test: simply stick the penny into the tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down. If Lincoln’s head is visible, it’s time to replace those tires. Slow Down for Spring Showers Spring showers bring May flowers – and wet driving conditions. Slowing down on a slippery road can be critical to reducing your car’s chance of hydroplaning, which happens when the tires encounter more water than they can disperse. As soon as it starts to mist, make sure you reduce your speed and increase your following distance to allow for proper braking. Lookout for Potholes Repeated freezing and thawing of cracks in the road surface cause potholes that can seriously damage your tires if hit hard enough. The faster you are driving, the more serious the damage you can cause. If you can’t avoid running over a pothole, slow down before hitting it. l May/June 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com |

Is Your Air Conditioner

Ready for Summer?

50 |

May/June 2019 | thehoodmagazine.com

Keeping your system in good shape with regular maintenance and inspections can help extend the life of your system. Your system should undergo a thorough inspection each season, to check for leaks or needed repairs. Catching issues early can help keep repair costs low. Routine maintenance can also prevent you from needing to make repairs. Have your system tuned up annually to clean the condenser and evaporator coils and check the blower components. Specific tasks you can accomplish on your own include: (Turn off power to the unit at the service panel prior to taking any of these steps.) •C lean or replace your furnace or air-handler filters twice a year or whenever they begin to look clogged with dust. If you don’t, air flow will be restricted, reducing efficiency, and you will recirculate dust into your home. •C lean the coils. Using a refrigerator coil brush or a soft brush on a vacuum, gently clean the coils from the outside of the unit. Be careful not to bend the delicate fins or damage the coils. If you do bend the fins, you can straighten them with a “fin comb” made for this purpose. After cleaning from the outside, vacuum the coils from the inside. To release stubborn debris, spray water from the inside. Sometimes it’s necessary to use a hose with a trigger-style

nozzle to blast dirt and debris out of the coils from inside the unit with a strong but focused stream, but be very careful if you do this. Take care not to bend the fins. •S coop leaves and debris out of the base of the condenser and, if it has a drain, make sure the drain is clear. •C heck the coolant lines. The refrigerant tubes or pipes that run from the evaporator on the air handler to the condenser outside are typically covered with foam coolant line insulation to prevent them from losing energy. If you see areas where the insulation is frayed or missing, replace it. To do this, install foam insulation sleeves or wrap the lines in a spiral fashion with foam insulation tape (you can cut both with a utility knife). Following these steps you need to test the air conditioner by turning your thermostat to off, turning the power to the unit back on and then set your thermostat to cool. If the unit is not functioning properly it is likely time to contact a qualified service technician

Prepping Your Outdoor Space The harsh snow of this past winter is quickly melting and fading away leaving a few new ponds and lakes, but spring is being ushered in its wake. The grilling enthusiasts typically don’t put their grills away from season to season, even though the opportunity to use our outdoor space is limited by Mother Nature! As She allows us to see our backyards, patios and decks again, we begin starting to plan for entertaining guests in our outdoor settings. Now is the perfect time to begin to add new touches to your outdoor living space. Let’s look to enjoy and savor the sounds and smells of spring and summer as we look to grilling in our outdoor kitchen. Whether it is a free-standing gas grill, a built-in wood fire grill, or anything in-between, the smells and sounds of grilling create the environment of fun and excitement. In addition, you have the opportunity to try lots of different options. Don’t let your grill cook only hot dogs, hamburgers, and steaks. Utilize the grill manufacturer’s apps and websites to expand your culinary grilling experience. You’ll be glad that you did! refrigeration that can be free-standing or built into your backyard landscaping. You’re sure to be a hit in the neighborhood if you have a 16-gallon Root beer dispenser! In addition, there are lots of other reasonable options for your outdoor space that include all refrigerators either in a door or drawers format. Don’t have a bunch of landscaping to build these items into? No problem. There are several brand specific grilling solutions that can be combined, or ones that are universal in their applications. There is definitely an item that fits every budget. Let your imagination fit your budget by including a TV, or wireless audio, a beverage cooler/refrigerator to keep the grilling items and drinks cold, the grill to heat up the excitement, and the music to bring the family together! Access all of this in your garage, three seasons area, patio, and/or deck. Enjoy the season of sun and fun and create a new “room” at your home—the FAMILY ZONE! l
