On February 29th, over 4,000 runners participated in the city’s largest race, the New Balance Chilly Half Marathon. The distinct aroma of chilly was evident to spectators in certain areas along Brant Street, as they cheered the runners on. The Marathon, in its 24th year, includes some of Canada’s best runners including past champions, Olympians and Elites. This year, Krista DuChene came in first in the ladies category while Reid Coolsaet finished first in the men’s category, setting a new Canadian Masters Half Marathon record!

Heritage Pie Workshop BY LESLIE STYLES

THE AROMA OF freshly baked pie filled the kitchen at Ireland Museum’s Heritage Pie workshop on February 23rd. Guests attending the hands-on workshop chatted as they prepared a variety of pies; traditional apple, caramel peach crumble and a savoury beef and mushroom pie. While Marian baked the pastries in the open hearth, the guests learned about the Ireland family by touring the house at Oakridge Farm. Finally, the pies were baked and ready as all the guests met at the large kitchen table to devour the results of their effort.

The Human Body Warranty Critical Illness insurance is your Human Body Warranty Are you the type of person who pays attention to the Warranty that comes with the ‘things’ you buy? New cars, appliances and phones all come with various types of warranties ranging from a few months to lifetime coverage. Maybe you’re even the type of person who values the peace of mind that comes with the extended warranties that are often available.

6

These can cost a few dollars per month on a new phone to a few thousand dollars to add protection to a new or used vehicle. For certain, not all warranties are created equal, however, for the important ‘things’ in life, it’s nice to know that a warranty is there to help cover the cost of fixing what’s broken. So, what are the most important ‘things’ in your life? Your car? Your furnace? Your refrigerator? Your home? (you’ve got home insurance, right?). Now think about the importance of your very own

NEIGHBOURHOODMAGA ZINE .CA

body and mind? Critical health issues can cost huge amounts of money and need to be addressed quickly. Doesn’t it make sense to have a warranty for the critical things that can go wrong with your health? Critical Illness insurance from Brown Financial Security is your Human Body (and Mind) Warranty. It is a guaranteed legal contract that pays you a tax-free, lump-sum benefit when things stop working properly in a critical way. It provides you and your family with money when it’s needed the most. Did you know that Critical Illness insurance has started to outsell Long-Term Disability insurance at some major Canadian insurers? People are realizing that conditions such as Cancer, Heart Attack, Stroke and

Dementia (including Alzheimer’s disease) are being diagnosed more often and at younger ages than ever before. With Critical Illness insurance you can focus on your health and not your finances when a diagnosis happens. And, for those you that made it all the way to the end of this article, here’s a special offer - a 100% money-back guarantee for staying healthy. Yes, Critical Illness insurance has a Return of Premium option that will pay back 100% of your money if you don’t make a claim. Aren’t you glad you read the whole article? Food. Friendship. Fundraising.

Congratulations to Food for Life on their 25th Anniversary and a successful first of four ‘All Around the Table’ dinner celebrations! BY LESLIE STYLES

IT WAS A FULL HOUSE at RBG’s Rock Garden as Food for Life kicked off their 25th Anniversary Year with a celebration dinner which included guests and a number of very distinguished volunteer servers for a scrumptious dinner, friendship and fundraising. The Honourable Karina Gould, Mayor Marianne Meed Ward, councillors Kelvin Galbraith, Paul Sharman and Chamber of Commerce President Carla Nell were among the VIP volunteers plating the feast for guests. Providing music throughout dinner were local artists, The Poachers Ukulele Band with Diana and Martin Zimber, plus other talented ukulele-strumming singers. Food for Life Canada are true food heroes, having rescued and distributed over 4 million pounds of food in 2019, all donated by many generous suppliers. This quality fresh food, which has a retail value of over $10 million, would have otherwise gone to landfill. “That’s what we do six days a week,” explained Executive Director Graham Hill. “And sometimes we rest on the seventh.” Their Halton clients are often not able to afford fresh food and having access to this nutrition is essential. For more information regarding upcoming ‘All Around the Table’ dinners in Oakville, Milton and Georgetown, go to foodforlife.ca to learn how you can help and be a #FoodHero.

CRUSTED

Chicken Schnitzel

e: deliciousdishcookingschool@gmail.com d: 416.200.3522 deliciousdish.ca

with CHOPPED TOMATO GARLIC BRUSCHETTA MIXTURE

I LOVE Chicken Schnitzel, it’s one of my favourite guilty indulgences. No guilt with this one. It is baked, full of good nutrients, loaded with flavour and is a sure winner each time! Quinoa flakes replace the traditional breadcrumbs and can be found in any whole foods store. Make it with the Chopped Tomato Garlic Bruschetta Mixture or not! Either way, you will love it! Serves 4-6

Ingredients

Directions STEP 1. Preheat oven to Broil. Arrange the rack to second from the top position. Line cookie sheet with foil and spray with the coconut oil spray. STEP 2. Mix together in a medium size bowl Quinoa Coating ingredients, place in shallow dish. Place egg in another shallow dish, place flour in a third shallow dish. Arrange dishes so that flour is first, then egg, then coating. STEP 3. Dip each pice of chicken in flour, shake off excess. Dip in egg, then coat in Quinoa Coating mixture. Lay coated chicken piece on oiled cookie sheet. Repeat with all the chicken. STEP 4. Lightly spray each piece of chicken with oil). STEP 5. Broil for 3-5 minutes, flip pieces over, broil for 3-5 more minutes.

12

STEP 6. Serve with Tomato Garlic Bruschetta mixture. STEP 7. To make the Tomato Garlic Bruschetta mixture: Season the tomatoes with salt and put them in a colander to drain for 5-10 minutes (or longer). Transfer tomatoes to a bowl and fold in remaining ingredients, season with salt and freshly ground pepper.

Make Ahead Tip The chicken can be floured, egged and coated, placed on a sheet of wax paper and either stored for the day in the refrigerator or frozen uncovered as is. Once frozen, the chicken pieces can be stored in a zip-lock bag. Allow the chicken to defrost uncovered in the refrigerator for a few hours or overnight before brushing with oil and broiling.

Flour Child Bakery GRAND OPENING THE OFFICIAL GRAND OPENING of Flour Child Bakery at 355 Plains Road East took place on March 10th amid much fanfare and ribbon-cutting. Councillor Kelvin Galbraith, along with Judy, Andrea and Sonia from the BIA, and Maude and Lindsay from the Chamber of Commerce, all attended to officially say welcome. “Everything from scratch, every day,” claims Maria Thornton, proprietor of Aldershot’s newest bakery. Customers come from as far away as Port Colborne to buy Maria’s addictive European baking. She sells three varieties of sausage rolls

BY LESLIE STYLES

that are extremely popular, as well as breads, croissants, danish, cookies and so much more. “The sunflower flaxseed bread is great for grilled cheese and it doesn’t matter what cheese you use,” explains Maria. “The bread makes it a gourmet style sandwich.” As a way of giving back to the community, all leftovers that contain no meat or cheese are donated to the food bank at the end of each day. So don’t forget to drop into the Flour Child Bakery when you’re in the area (and check out the pretzel cookies!).
