When designing a living space, leave room for your everyday habits and favourite activities. Read on for inspiration and tips to create cozy corners within the home.
A SPACE FOR READING
Create a cozy reading corner with comfortable seating, the perfect lighting and an accent wall that makes it feel like its own little room within a room. Choose colours like greens, blues or a deep brown that will help you stay immersed in the story you’re reading.
A PERSONALIZED COFFEE AREA
Start every day on the right foot with a personalized coffee nook. Choose a corner near windows for maximum sunlight exposure first thing in the morning. Here, you can paint window trim for a unique accent that will make the room pop. When selecting a colour for the trim, keep the wall colours in mind and go for a contrasting look.
A CORNER FOR WELLNESS
In today’s fast-paced world, creating a space that promotes your wellbeing is essential. From a skincare vanity to a dedicated fitness area, make your home your sanctuary and reserve an area for self-care and peace. Choose paint colours that calm the mind – such as Benjamin Moore Palest Pistachio 2122-60, a barely-there hue with crisp notes of blue and grey, or Benjamin Moore Natural Linen CC-90, a sandy neutral with just the right amount of rustic warmth and elegance. ◆ newscanada .com

LEMON ASPARAGUS
Carbonara
DIRECTIONS
STEP ONE: Separate 2 eggs, reserving whites for another purpose. Whisk the 2 yolks with 2 whole eggs, Parmesan cheese, lemon zest, 2 tbsp (30 ml) lemon juice, salt and black pepper; set aside.
STEP TWO: Fill a large, deep skillet with water and bring to a simmer. Add 1 tbsp (15 ml) lemon juice. Crack 4 to 6 eggs (use 1 per serving) into ramekins and slide into the simmering skillet of water. Poach eggs for 3 to 4 minutes or until whites are set but yolks are still runny. Use a slotted spoon to carefully transfer poached eggs to a paper-towel-lined plate.
STEP THREE: Meanwhile, cook spaghetti according to package timing for al dente in a dutch oven of boiling water seasoned with 1 tbsp (15 ml) salt. Reserve 2 cups (500 ml) of hot pasta
water before draining pasta. Reserve pasta in colander and return dutch oven to stovetop; set over medium heat.
STEP FOUR: Add butter and asparagus to dutch oven; sauté for 3 minutes. Add garlic; sauté for 1 minute.
STEP FIVE: Gradually whisk about 1/2 cup (125 ml) of reserved pasta water into the egg, cheese and lemon mixture to temper it. Add hot, drained spaghetti and egg mixture to asparagus. Cook, tossing constantly and adding additional pasta cooking water until pasta is saucy and heated through.
STEP SIX: Divide pasta between serving bowls and top with a poached egg. Serve immediately with extra cheese on the side.

INTENTIONS Warm
Interiors that embrace autumn’s slower rhythm
By Golara Ghasemi | Studio Golara Design
THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THE COOLER MONTHS THAT NATURALLY DRAWS US INDOORS. AS DAYS SHORTEN AND THE AIR TURNS CRISP, OUR LIVING SPACES TAKE ON NEW MEANING, BECOMING PLACES OF REFUGE, GATHERING, AND COMFORT. THIS SEASONAL SHIFT IS THE PERFECT CUE TO INFUSE YOUR HOME WITH LAYERS OF COZINESS AND INSTANT WARMTH, ACHIEVED THROUGH THOUGHTFUL TEXTILES, GLOWING LIGHT, AND THE INVITING FLICKER OF A FIRE.
BRING ON THE LAYERS
The simplest way to add warmth is through the art of layering. Think of it like dressing for fall: lightweight linens and cottons make way for richer, more tactile fabrics. Velvet cushions, boucle accent chairs, wool throws, and chunky knit blankets not only look luxurious but invite touch, instantly creating intimacy. Layering also extends to the interaction between surfaces and finishes. Picture a sleek leather sofa paired with a nubby boucle pillow, or a linen bedspread topped with a quilted coverlet and wool throw. The key is to strike a balance between contrast and chaos stick to cozy neutrals like sand, cream, and oatmeal, punctuated with warm autumnal tones of rust, ochre, and burgundy.
SET THE MOOD WITH LIGHT AND FIRE
If textiles provide the tactile element, lighting sets the stage. As daylight fades earlier, harsh, cool-toned bulbs can feel sterile. Designers like myself lean into warm-toned bulbs for fall and winter, which instantly soften a space. Dimmers, sconces, table lamps, and pendants layered throughout a space create pools of light, while sculptural bases and textured shades add personality. And for a sensory boost, candlelight never fails. Clusters of varying heights on a mantel or dining table are especially effective.
Of course, nothing delivers warmth literally and visual like a fireplace. Whether traditional wood-burning, gas, or even a modern electric insert, the glow of a fire becomes the heartbeat of a cozy home. Styling the hearth with natural stone, ceramic vessels, or stacked logs only amplifies the effect, creating an instant focal point.
INTRODUCING DEPTH WITH COLOUR AND TEXTURE
Colour is another great way to cultivate warmth. Fall leans into earthier hues. Shades of terracotta, olive, mustard, and auburn feel grounding and organic.
For richness, layer tones within the same family, think deep terracotta with soft clay, or burgundy paired with muted rose. Warm whites, oatmeal’s, and caramels balance the palette, keeping bolder hues cohesive and calm.
Texture also plays beyond fabrics. Think woven baskets, rustic ceramics, hammered metal trays, or a boucle ottoman, add tactile depth. Pairing these with natural elements, wood, stone, and leather ensures a room feels grounded. Small swaps, like a jewel-toned velvet pillow, a wool rug underfoot, can shift the mood instantly.
With mindful choices in textiles, lighting, and colour, your home can transform into a cocoon of comfort, inviting for now and adaptable for the seasons ahead. ◆
