WITH COCONUT AND PINEAPPLE

Most vegan cheesecake recipes out there call for soaking cashews overnight and whirling them in a food processor to get that sought-after creamy texture. SKIP THAT TIME-CONSUMING STEP WITH A PREPARED PLANT-BASED SPREAD.

DIRECTIONS STEP ONE: Stir together 1/4 cup (60 mL) shredded coconut, walnuts, 1 tbsp granulated sugar and coconut oil in a small bowl. Press into bottoms of six 1/2-cup (125 mL) glass jars or ramekins, or small serving glasses, dividing evenly.

TOASTING THE SHREDDED COCONUT AND WALNUTS ADDS CRUNCH AND ENHANCES THEIR FLAVOUR. TRY TOASTING THE COCONUT IN A DRY SKILLET OVER MEDIUM-LOW HEAT, STIRRING OFTEN UNTIL LIGHT GOLDEN, ABOUT FOUR TO FIVE MINUTES.

STEP T WO: Beat cream cheesestyle spread with coconut yogurt in large bowl using electric hand mixer on low speed until smooth. Increase speed to medium; beat until creamy, about 1 minute. Beat in icing sugar and lemon juice. STEP THREE: Spoon cheesecake mixture into jars over top of shredded coconut mixture, dividing evenly. Cover and refrigerate until chilled, about 1 hour, or overnight. STEP FOUR: Stir pineapple with remaining 1 tbsp granulated sugar in separate small bowl. STEP FIVE: Spoon pineapple mixture over top of cheesecakes and sprinkle with remaining shredded coconut, dividing evenly. Top with fresh mint (if using).

Swap out the pineapple for any tropical fruit, such as MANGO OR PASSION FRUIT.

Having a bunch of objects floating around a coffee table can often look like a cluttered mess. Having items grouped together on a stack of books or a tray allows your eye to see all elements as one grouping, so it’s less busy and more impactful.

VARY HEIGHTS Having a few things with varying heights creates movement and interest. I like to pair higher floral arrangements or greenery with shorter decorative items like candles and objects.

HAVE CONTR AST Contrast is a wonderful way to add interest to whatever you’re doing. If you have a light coloured coffee table, try adding a dark tray and then lighter items on it. This layering of light, dark, and light will make you look like a pro.

INCLUDE VARIOUS TEXTURES Having natural textures such as flowers and greenery juxtaposed with smooth and shiny decorative objects is a beautiful way to add interest to your grouping. The various textures add layers and make the collection more attractive than if all elements were similar.

The clients, Jesleen and Jihad, a young professional couple expecting their first child, approached Taylor Smyth to design a new residence, having been impressed by one of their other contemporary houses nearby, winner of the People’s Choice Award for the Ontario Association Design Excellence Awards (“House on the Bluffs”). Both sites feature breathtaking views over Lake Ontario, perched fifty feet above the lake at the edge of the cliff formation known as the Scarborough Bluffs.

Maximizing the views to the lake and embracing the landscape were guiding design inspirations. The house is focused on a two-story great room, skylit along one side, and fully glazed at the back, with large sliding doors that open out to the backyard and swimming pool. An exterior planter extends inside, along with a vertical screen of oak slats, to define the separation between the great room and dining room. An open feature stair winds through the centre of the house up to the 3rd floor roof terrace, specifically requested by the client where they could enjoy spectacular views of the lake above the tree canopy.

Outside, the white stucco walls and black metal accent panels are combined with warm oak-look phenolic panels (Trespa) on the garage door and soffits, chosen for their no-maintenance composition, important considerations in Ontario’s widely fluctuating summer and winter climate. The material palette inside features light oak floors throughout, with accents of both white and black large-scale porcelain, the former reproducing the rich patterns of Statuario marble. The second floor contains three bedrooms. The master bedroom features a spacious and luxurious ensuite bathroom and walk-in closet, where the white and black porcelain slabs are combined to create a dramatic contrast. ▹

Since moving into the house, the client has welcomed their second child and the house has become a frequent destination for large extended family events. “My daughter loves it here,” Jesleen says. “Every morning she comes down to the living room and says, ‘hello world! She likes to wave out to the birds and the trees.”
