Organic Gardening

Thursday 14 September | 10am – 12pm
Join us in a practical workshop exploring Organic Gardening! There will be a short presentation and then we will tour the vegetable gardens and show our organic garden practises and techniques that you can implement in your own backyard! A seed raising recipe will also be demonstrated and seeds will be sown in small pots for participants to take home.

Build Your Own Insect Hotel

Get active building and decorating an insect hotel this school holidays! Learn about beneficial insects in your local environment and the amazing services they provide for our backyards. Create a home out of recycled material for beneficial insects that frequent your garden and get artsy decorating your insect hotel with nature crafts and painting.
Compost and Worm Farms

Saturday 30 September | 10am – 12pm
Learn how to recycle your food waste at home this school holidays! This workshop goes through a step-by-step guide on how to setup a worm farm and compost bin and how to maintain it. There will be cross sectional model of a worm farm that is on display, along with a composting superstar native to Australia, a Giant Burrowing Cockroach! This workshop is supported by The Hills Shire Council Resource Recovery Team.
Platypus Discovery in The Hills

Tuesday 10 October | 6pm – 8pm
Learn more about how a local environment community group (Cattai Hills Environment Network CHEN) and Dr Michelle Ryan and researchers from Western Sydney University discovered platypus, what we are doing now to help preserve this population, and how you can get involved! Learn about the story of ‘Bluey’ the platypus and share stories and information about the platypus!
Plant Propagation

Thursday 12 October | 10am – 12pm
Come along and learn the art of plant propagation, a handy skill for the garden! Knowing how to make more plants from the ones you already have or from cuttings from other gardens is the best way to expand and plant your garden for free. You will see how to grow new plants from cuttings, divided clumps, runners and how to use techniques such as layering or grafting. You are welcome to bring your own seeds and cuttings.

Bird ID and Photography

Lachlan Community Environment Centre

Join us in Bird week to delve deep into Bird ID and birdwatching with this visual and interactive workshop detailing a variety of ways in which birds may be identified. Discover how to ID birds based on their features and behaviour, learn about common birds found in the local area, camouflage, water birds and introduced birds. Learn some top tips and tricks for bird photography!
Citizen Science Koala Project


Lilly Cattai Hills Environment Network (CHEN)
Thursday 26 October | 6pm – 7pm
Learn from citizen scientist Lilly from Cattai Hills Environment Network about the koalas in The Hills, the community citizen science work on the koala population and how you can help! During this interactive workshop there will be a short presentation and live Q&A session with citizen scientists to ask about koala population, research work, biodiversity in the region and how we can protect this iconic endangered species.
Join us for our free interactive workshops at the Community Environment Centre available to all residents of The Hills. Workshops are run regularly through the year exploring a range of topics. Places are limited and bookings are essential.
