Platypus Discovery in The Hills – Taking Action

Thursday 1 August | 5:30pm – 7:30pm

Come along, celebrate the launch of Platypus Month and learn more about how researchers from Western Sydney University and a local environment group, Cattai Hills Environment Network (CHEN) discovered platypus, what we are doing now to help preserve this platypus population and how you can get involved!

Cooking Using Native Edibles and Working Bee

Saturday 10 August | 10am – 12pm

Engage the senses, develop new skills and learn how to cook and use native edibles in your everyday recipes or special treats! Cooking extraordinaire and Growing Food for Wildlife Project volunteer Linda, will teach you some methods on how to use native edibles in your cooking!

Plant Propagation

Thursday 26 September | 10am – 12pm

Come along and learn the art of plant propagation, a handy skill for any enthusiast and ideal for the home gardener, wildlife carer or foodie. This workshop will be run as a beginners course by Community Environment Centre volunteers and plant enthusiasts Tim and Claude, to learn and practice plant propagation skills. There will be cuttings, pots, and rooting mix available to start new plants to take home!

Beneficial Insects

Saturday 28 September school holidays | 10am – 12pm

Learn about the fascinating world of our insects and pollinators this school holidays! Deep dive into insect biology and learn about stingless bees, blue banded bees, hoverflies and wasp mimics! Which native bees and other insect pollinators are visiting your local flower patch? Can you tell if they are a bee, fly or wasp? Learn about their mysterious lives and how to recognise pollinating insects within Sydney this Biodiversity month.

Using Recycled Materials –No Dig Garden

Thursday 3 October | 10am – 12pm

If you have bad soil or poor drainage you can construct your garden beds by building up rather than digging down! Learn how to build a ‘No Dig’ garden using some recycled materials such as compost, newspaper, cardboard, manure and straw. These recycled materials can form layers in new garden bed that will break down over time to produce rich organic soil. Come and see a hands-on demonstration of how to make a ‘No Dig’ garden bed and bring these skills back to your own backyard and community!

Do You Know that Bird – Bird ID and photography workshop

Thursday 17 October | 10am – 12pm

Celebrate Bird Week and come along to learn, investigate Bird ID and birdwatching with this interactive workshop detailing a variety of ways in which birds may be identified. Join avid birdwatcher/ photographer Lachlan as we investigate how to ID birds based on their features and behaviour and learn some top tips and tricks for bird photography! Learn about common birds found in the local area, camouflage, water birds and introduced birds. Learn how to take action to help birds in your backyard and community!
