President’s Message Hello fellow Rotarians, Last Monday Maureen Andersen entertained us speaking about her dedication to the art of Bonsai. Maureen is a spritely senior lady who told me she has been treasurer of the Bonsai Association for 23 years. Is there a message there, Keith? Last Wednesday, at our monthly board meeting, the board approved the honoring of all the financial commitments that were in our club plan for each avenue of service. It was also confirmed that we will be hosting Ida Wagesson, the exchange student from Sweden, now that we have three confirmed host families. Thank you, Jim, for coordinating this exchange. It was also agreed that our club will consider an International project, possibly in Cambodia, in the next Rotary year. This Monday night is the United Awards Night and partners and friends are most welcome. It is expected there will be some musical entertainment from the group. President Rob.

Background Typhoon Haiyan, otherwise known as “Yolanda”, caused catastrophic damage in Central Philippines most particularly throughout Tacloban, Leyte and Samar Islands with maximum winds of 235 km/hr leaving approximately 11 million affected and thousands homeless. The rest of the world pledged their support to the Philippine government while a number of organizations and small groups moved immediately in an effort to provide basic relief for the survivors of one of the deadliest cyclone in years. The same group of talented musicians who had teamed up in March 2012 to successfully raise over $18,000 for the survivors for typhoon Washi (Sendong) supported by the Rotary Club of The Hills-Kellyville, the Rotary Club of Iligan and the Rotary Club of Cagayan De Oro, watched the aftermath of Yolanda in horror and couldn't just idly stand by. So, a group from within the original team re-UNITED, and together with a few special guests once more shareD their time, effort and talents to raise funds to help those requiring help, raising more than $10,000.
