DISCOVER THE HIDDEN GEMS OF TEMECULA’S WINE
Dear Reader,
There’s always been something about the holidays that brings out the deepest joy and excitement in me.
Maybe it’s the shimmering lights as you drive down Jefferson and into Old Town. Or the illuminated tree at the Duck Pond.
Perhaps it’s the smiling faces bustling around Promenade Mall and the Christmas music that plays as you explore.
Or maybe it’s the excited frenzy at Costco as shoppers frantically score deals and discounts.
Call me crazy but I love the chaos!
So here’s my message to you…
Embrace the chaos! Run amok!
Instead of letting the holidays stress you out, you stress the holidays out!
Be so jovial that the holiday season itself says “Enough already!”
I promise you it will change your experience and you will find yourself renewed with an overwhelming sense of peace, joy, and uncontrollable laughter.
Myself and the rest of The Hidden Vine team wishes you a TRULY HAPPY holidays.
With love, ~Porsché Mysticque

Bridging Gaps and Restoring Hope with M.A.L.H.Y
It was a cool afternoon at The Nook in Temecula Business Park, a venue that felt like the perfect setting for a story about resilience and hope. Against the backdrop of the floating bookshelves adorned with plants, candles, and well-loved books, Jessica Smith, founder of the 501(c)(3) non-profit, M.A.L.H.Y., sat perched on the edge of the plush gray couch. With her soft smile, she had a commanding yet calming presence. Her all-black dress exuded elegance, accented by a diamond brooch spelling out “M.A.L.H.Y. Jessica.”
As she settled into her seat, you wouldn’t be able to help but notice Jessica’s hands. They rested lightly in her lap, fingers entwined. Occasionally, she’d make a circular motion with her hand—up and outward—as if she were gently sending her words into the air for
others to hold.“I started M.A.L.H.Y. because I saw a big need in the community, and M.A.L.H.Y. is a personal story of mine and my family,” Jessica began, her voice steady but tinged with emotion.
The nonprofit’s mission is ambitious: to provide free resources for ages 10 to 25 in the areas of mental health, addiction, love, human trafficking, and youth financial literacy. The acronym itself, M.A.L.H.Y., stands as a powerful reminder of the interconnected struggles faced by today’s youth.
Jessica’s vision for M.A.L.H.Y. was born not just from observation but from deeply personal experiences. As she recounted her journey, the weight of those moments was reflected in her gentle gestures and thoughtful pauses.
“COVID was hard on everyone, but for my family, it really revealed how broken the system is,” she said, her fingers twisting in her lap. “One of our loved ones was struggling
with mental health, and when we reached out for help, they told us the waitlists were three months. Three months! How do you wait that long in a crisis?” She shook her head, her frustration hanging in the air.
The conversation turned even more poignant when she shared a harrowing experience involving human trafficking. Jessica’s hand motions became slower, deliberate, as if trying to physically temper the weight of her words.
“One of my family members was targeted through the Roblox app,” she said, her voice breaking slightly. She paused, clasping her hands tightly. “She was communicating with someone she thought was her age, but they manipulated and groomed her, convincing her to share her location. They then planned to meet her at a local park.”
A silence filled the room, heavy and thick.
“I noticed something was off in her behavior,” Jessica continued. “That’s when I stepped in, checked her conversations on her tablet, and saw what was happening. I took action right away. I called everybody that I needed to call, and they met that person at the park and were able
to find out what he was planning on doing.”
Her eyes glistened as she spoke, but there was a determined strength in her voice. “In our community, our kids are going missing, but it’s not like in San Diego County, LA County, or San Bernardino County where they have tracks.”
She explains that tracks are where you can actually see young youth and adults being trafficked out in the open, right on the street.
“Here, you don’t see that,” she continued. “What you do see are posts on social media saying ‘missing, missing, missing.’ Those kids are the ones becoming missing, and then they’re being trafficked. They could be transported to San Diego, LA, or the high desert.”
Jessica explains that Riverside Count is number one in human trafficking.
“We’re so close to the border, and a lot of people don’t realize that trafficking is happening through social media. It’s not something you see visibly—it’s all through social media communication.”
Through her organization, Jessica has developed innovative outreach programs, including placing magnets with hotline numbers in public restrooms. “It’s a simple thing,” she explained, “but when someone sees that number and calls us, it can mean the difference between captivity and freedom.”
Jessica’s passion extends beyond human trafficking. She weaves education into every aspect of M.A.L.H.Y.’s mission, drawing on her 25 years in banking to teach youth financial literacy. “I want these kids to know how to manage their money, avoid debt traps, and build their futures,” she said, her hand making that familiar outward motion, as if offering the concept to the universe.
As the interview neared its end, Jessica lit up while talking about the upcoming Winter Gala. “It’s our biggest fundraiser,” she said, her smile softening the intensity of the previous moments. “The funds we raise help us provide therapy sessions, addiction recovery resources, and temporary housing, at no cost to those who need it most.”
Jessica’s words painted a vivid picture of the gala: inspiring survivor stories, educational presentations from task force members, and a celebration of resilience and hope. “This is more than a fundraiser,” she said. “It’s a chance to bring light to the issues no one wants to talk about; mental health, human trafficking, and addiction, and show people that help is here, and there’s no shame in seeking or talking about it.”
Anyone in Jessica’s presence will undoubtedly marvel at the depth of her dedication. M.A.L.H.Y. isn’t just an organization; in her own words, “We are the ones who fill the gap left by the systems that leave our most vulnerable deserted.”
In that moment, sitting on that gray couch in the warmth of The Nook, It was clear that Jessica wasn’t just sharing a story, she was assisting lives.

Dear Temecula,
I have lived in the valley and loved you since 1991. I am so grateful to have arrived when there was one stoplight and 27,000 residents. Such a small community allowed me to meet and engage with historic valley icons, a number of whom became mentors to me.
I love that I met wonderful people and characters such as Tony Tobin, a lifelong valley resident at that time in his 80’s, and considered the Valley’s preeminent historian of his time. He allowed me to regularly badger him whenever I visited the private museum he created in an Old Town Temecula storefront on Main Street.
I love you for allowing me to meet and be mentored by Vince and Audrey Cilurzo. They were so important to enhancing my love for you, the Temecula Valley, as they enlightened me about Wine Country history, taking me under their wing when I started my tour and event company in 1993. Every single visitor I brought to the winery would receive a private tour conducted by Audrey, guiding them through the production area, learning about the cultivation of grapes, the process of wine creation, and an explanation about the equipment used. Guests heard about Vince’s fascinating career as an Emmy-award-winning lighting director for ABC television. All with intriguing stories in abundance as Audrey talked about their relationship with Ely Callaway, John Poole, and other wine country pioneers.
My love for you has endured and been strengthened by the many well-intentioned, hospitable residents I’ve volunteered with as we’ve positively impacted this community through numerous non-profit efforts. One of these very important efforts involved a small group of people I was fortunate to be involved with, who, in 1996 decided some run-down, dilapidated buildings were worth saving from demolition. Twenty-seven years later in 2023, the structures were listed on the United States Department of the Interior’s Register of National Historic Landmarks.
These buildings? The Vail Headquarters.
The continued maturation of this valley’s attributes has only strengthened my love for our unique corner of the world, enhancing my passion for sharing your beautiful story with the thousands of visitors we have welcomed as our guests over the years.
Thank you, Temecula. I am grateful for the over 30 years of love you have shown me.

If you were to walk down Front Street in Old Town, you wouldn’t even see it. If you were to enter the trendy Crush & Brew restaurant, your eyes still wouldn’t land on its doors. If you were to wander around a bit inside Crush & Brew, you just might need a waiter to point you in the right direction.
Talk about a Hidden Gem!
Tucked away behind the unassuming red swinging doors at Crush & Brew lies one of Temecula’s best-kept secrets: Thompson & Twain, a speakeasy-style saloon that masterfully blends Old West charm with modern creativity. If you didn’t know it was there, you’d walk right by—and that’s precisely the point.
Step through the doors, and you’re transported to another world. The intimate, dimly lit space channels the spirit of a vintage saloon, complete with Western memorabilia, quirky pop culture references, and enough hidden Easter eggs to
keep you scanning the room all night.
Buffalo heads, a jarred snake named Sam, and even a well-hidden Baby Yoda are just a few of the surprises waiting to be discovered.
Opened in 2017, Thompson & Twain takes its cues from iconic Westerninspired media like Westworld and Red Dead Redemption. But while its ambiance is steeped in nostalgia, the experience is anything but stuck in the past. Bar Manager Steve Fylpaa describes the vision as a “2024 twist on the Old West,” welcoming patrons of all ages and tastes.
The star of the show? Their “Dealer’s Choice” drink menu. Here, the
bartenders’ skills truly shine. You pick your spirit, be it whiskey, gin, rum, or even rye, and share your flavor preferences. From there, the talented team crafts a custom cocktail tailored to your tastes. “We’ve got some of the most skilled bartenders in town,” Steve shares proudly.
For those craving a bite, Thompson & Twain also offers small plates like their charcuterie skewers, expertly curated by Chef Journey from their sister restaurant, Espadín.
Finding this hidden gem is an adventure in itself. Accessed through Crush & Brew, it’s a first-come, first-served experience—no reservations allowed. As Steve says, “Get here early, or be prepared to wait…it’s worth it.”
For locals and visitors alike, Thompson & Twain isn’t just a bar; it’s an experience that captures the soul of Temecula’s Old Town while offering something completely unique. Discover it for yourself, and don’t forget to look around—you never know what hidden treasures you’ll find.

The Prophet of the Turntables
Golden light beamed through the tan shades of The Nook, bathing the room in a soft glow. Tucked into the corner of the room that seemed to hold the sun’s rays the best, Kris Figueroa was seated in striking couture chairs near the large windows. Better known as DJ Prophet, Kris leaned back, his easy grin as magnetic as his reputation suggested. His charisma filled the space, tempered by a grounded energy that spoke of experience and purpose.
Of course, we had to start with the name; DJ Prophet.
A laugh bubbled from Kris, the kind that immediately puts one at ease. “Yeah, it’s Prophet, spelled P-R-O-P-H-E-T,” he clarified, leaning slightly forward as if letting the listener in on a secret. “It’s about the message through the music; not religious text or fortune-telling. My goal is to only speak the truth to create a positive vibration and create an experience for people to take them somewhere nostalgically and musically. I take them to some part in their life where they’re at their happiest or into a situation that they’d like to be moving toward.”
The whole team listened intently as Kris seemingly spoke our manifestations into existence. At that moment, it was undeniable that there was something special about his abilities.
In truth, his philosophy isn’t just lip service. Kris’s passion for his craft is evident in the way he describes “reading the room.”
“I tune into the vibe,” he explained, his hands moving expressively as if he were crafting an invisible melody. “I read the people, the environment. It’s about making everyone feel like they’re part of one energy. It’s not just playing songs, it’s creating an experience.”
The journey to becoming DJ Prophet started humbly. “It was in my friend’s bedroom, actually,” Kris shared with a laugh, his eyes twinkling with the memory. He described sneaking into his friend’s older brother’s record collection, discovering turntables,
and experimenting with beats and scratches. What started as an attempt to rap over instrumentals quickly evolved into a fascination with how music could move a room.
“I’d carry crates into college parties just to watch my friend’s brother DJ,” he said, his tone shifting into reverence. “Seeing him control the energy in the room without saying a word. It was electric. I knew I wanted to do that.”
From those early days of hauling vinyl to now having a résumé that reads like a who’s-who of the music industry, Kris’s journey is a testament to his relentless commitment. He’s toured Canada with The Pharcyde, worked with Goody Mob’s Big Gipp, and DJed events for icons like Stevie Wonder and Britney Spears. He’s been on TV, spun at high-profile weddings (including one featured on Vanderpump Rules), and graced radio stations like LA’s original hip-hop station, 93.5 KDAY.
Still, it was his family that ultimately led him to Temecula.
“L.A. was closing in on me,” Kris admitted, his voice tinged with nostalgia. “I’d just had a baby girl, and I wanted her to grow up with family, her grandparents, her cousins, on a cul-de-sac like I did. My wife and I are both entrepreneurs, so having that support system here made all the difference.”
While life in the Inland Empire is slower than the fast-paced grind of Los Angeles, Kris found his rhythm in the community. He’s become a fixture in youth sports, coaching basketball and football while also mentoring kids through mindset coaching.
“I felt like during the pandemic, the a lot of kids were underdeveloped in their social skills and their self reliance and personal development due to being isolated,” he said in a serious tone. “I felt like it was something I could help with through athletics; getting their mindset right to believe in themselves and tap into their infinite potential as human beings. If they believe it in their minds, they can create it with their hands.”
The same focus on connection drives Kris’s work as a DJ. “It’s not about me,” he said simply. “It’s about the people in the room. Whether it’s a brunch in Menifee or a high-energy club set, my goal is always the same: to inspire joy, unity, and love through music.”
As the golden light of the afternoon began to fade, Kris leaned back with that winning smile.
From the streets of L.A. to the neighborhoods of Temecula, DJ Prophet has stayed true to his mission: spreading truth, light, and unforgettable experiences—one beat at a time.

On November 13th, the Global Society for Female Entrepreneurs (GSFE) celebrated International Kindness Day in grand fashion at the picturesque Murrieta Hot Springs Resort. With a theme centered on kindness, the event was a vibrant showcase of community, empowerment, and generosity.
The venue buzzed with excitement as attendees, dressed as princesses in shades of pink to honor both GSFE and the color of kindness, gathered for a day filled with inspiration and celebration. Hosted by the dynamic duo of Dr. Madeline Plate and her younger counterpart, Hannah Carter, the event seamlessly blended elegance with fun, creating a truly memorable experience for all who attended.
One of the highlights of the day was the Kindness Awards ceremony, where over 70 women from across the globe were recognized for their acts of kindness. While many recipients attended in person, others joined virtually, showcasing the far-reaching impact of GSFE’s mission. Each honoree received a trophy as a testament to their commitment to spreading kindness and positively impacting their communities.
The event featured a variety of captivating performances,
offering attendees a chance to shop while supporting local businesses. A silent auction and a grand raffle added an extra layer of excitement, with guests eagerly participating for the chance to win incredible prizes.
The Hidden Vine team was honored to capture the magic of the day through photography, preserving the moments of laughter, camaraderie, and celebration. From the beautifully dressed attendees to the uplifting speeches and performances, every detail highlighted the event’s focus on kindness and empowerment.
The GSFE International Kindness Day celebration was more than just an event; it was a testament to the power of women supporting one another and making a difference in the world. By honoring acts of kindness, GSFE continues to inspire others to follow suit, creating a ripple effect of positivity that extends far beyond the day itself.
For those who attended, the memories made will undoubtedly last a lifetime. And for those who missed it, GSFE’s message is clear: kindness is a gift we can all share, and together, we can build a brighter, more compassionate world.
Stepping into Portals feels like entering a new dimension. The bold black and purple branding sets the tone for an adventure. To the left, arcade games flash and chime, while straight ahead, families share laughter over pizza at bustling tables. A nearby counter buzzes with guests exchanging tickets for prizes and gearing up for the attractions.
On this day, a youth football team energized the space as they prepped for a laser tag showdown. Beyond them, glowing black-light mini golf courses beckoned, while Portals’ hidden speakeasy offered adults a quieter retreat.
The scene is a perfect snapshot of the community atmosphere that co-owners Chad and Alfred Williams envisioned when they first dreamed up Portals.
Amid the buzz, our Editor-in-Chief, Porsché, and Alfred were ready for a showdown at the air hockey table. The puck slid across the board with dizzying speed, the click and clack of the rally blending seamlessly with the arcade’s soundtrack. Alfred’s competitive grin gave away his love for the games and the joy of sharing them with visitors.
As the showdown began, so did the story of Portals’ beginning.
“It started out with a concept of a laundromat,” Alfred began, indicating that the entrepreneurial spirit that most Temeculans are known for was beaming inside of them.
“But then we started thinking about what are the things that are lacking in this area? I’ve lived in this area since high school about 20-plus years ago, graduating from Temecula Valley High School. Unfortunately, there wasn’t really a whole lot then, and still not a whole lot now. So we thought, what can we do to bring something fun and exciting to the Inland Empire?”
Alfred focused his attention back to the table and back and forth they went. With little effort, Alfred sent the puck flying into his opponent’s goal… twice.
His joy seemed to light up the room with child-like wonder, but that was the point. Portals was meant to delight and illuminate all who entered, not just the children.
“We wanted to make sure we covered all ages, from the little kids to the parents to the grandparents,” Alfred explained. While speaking, Porsché scored two goals of her own.
“Okay, it’s gonna get serious now,” Alfred said with raised eyebrows.
While the game intensified, so did the story of Portals’ birth.
“It took us about three years to get to where we’re at now,” Alfred admitted. And it’s no wonder. Everything inside the laser tag, mini-golf, and speakeasy was hand-designed, fabricated, and painted by incredible artists. The attention to detail is astonishing.
The two players focused their attention back on the game. After several intense passes between them, Alfred scored the final winning shot.
Chad, who was standing off to the side, smiled warmly.
It was Chad’s vision that made Portals what it is and, over a game of skeeball, he explained.
“We have a couple of strong beliefs,” he says as he presses the game card to the console causing the balls to rush down to both his and Porsché’s lane.
“One of those is supporting kids in various roles. Foster kids are very important to us as well as kids with special needs. We have an accessibility and inclusion hour twice a month. We also support military families.”
Chad nonchalantly rolled skeeballs up his lane, scoring several thousand points in a matter of seconds.
“We offer a 10% discount every day for our military families and have partnered with MilVet to be a drop-off location for their toy drive for the holidays. We’ve also partnered with local nonprofit VSSN to host one of their holiday events here.”
He went on to explain that both he and Alfred have come from military families so it was important for them to give back. It wasn’t just military families that were close to their hearts either.
“Alfred was in foster care as a kid,” he revealed as he rolled another ball right into the 5,000-point slot. “So we believe
that every kid should have equal opportunity and be able to have these experiences too. And sometimes the kids in the foster care system haven’t. So we want to make sure that our center is available to them too.”
Both Alfred and Chad live and breathe this mission daily, especially after adopting their amazing son out of foster care.
Chad rolled his final ball and ended with a total of 15,000 points.
Arcade games aren’t the only thing Chad and Alfred are good at. They have also seemingly mastered the art of relationship building. Putting local collaborations at the forefront of everything they do at Portals, their desire is to make their businesses an impactful and permanent part of Temecula’s history.
“In our lounge, we sourced a lot of the beverages from local wineries, breweries, and microbreweries. We really want to be a partner to other local small businesses to make sure that we can all grow together,” Chad explained.
“We also work with local libraries to bring about youth literacy programs,” Alfred added. “So, we want to collaborate with local businesses that have a passion for advocacy for military families, veterans, foster youth, or literacy.”

In-house BBQ Bacon Burger, handcrafted by sous chef Cameron Sherar, is the kind of meal that makes you forget everything else happening around you.
First things first, the patty. This isn’t your standard beef; it’s a blend of three different cuts, freshly prepped daily, and cooked on a flat top for that unbeatable caramelized crust. Each bite is perfectly balanced, juicy without being messy, with a flavor that lingers just long enough to make you go in for another.
And then there’s the bacon. Not just any bacon either. We’re talking about crispy, smoky, and cooked so perfectly it could star in its own movie. Add to that a drizzle of in-house barbecue sauce that’s tangy, sweet, and just a little rebellious, tying the whole thing together.
Stacked with golden onion rings for crunch and served with hand-cut fries that practically demand a round of applause, this burger isn’t just food—it’s an experience.
Chef Cameron summed it up best: “Come on down and ask for me. I’ve got more dishes to show you.” And trust us, once you’ve tasted this masterpiece, you’ll be planning your next visit before you’ve even finished the last bite; and you don’t even have to be a guest!

Michael Scalise wasn’t just a man of stories; he was a master at capturing them. As the founder of Black Tie Productions, a premier video and photography company based in Temecula, Michael’s passion for storytelling had roots stretching back over four decades. He began humbly, as he recounted, during an internship at a local television station in San Diego in the early 1980s.
“I started in the mailroom,” he said with a small smile, a hint of pride slipping into his otherwise soft tone. “That was just the way to get your foot in the door back then.”
The internship, however, was no ordinary starting point. It was the beginning of a career that would see Michael climb the ranks in broadcast journalism. From delivering mail to editing video in the newsroom, his trajectory was nothing short of inspiring.
Back at The Nook, the late afternoon sunlight cast a warm glow over the cozy space. Seated on the growingly popular gray couch, Michael Scalise exuded an understated presence. His vivid blue eyes held a quiet intensity, a trait that became strikingly apparent as he spoke. With his hands gently clasped and his arms pulled close to his sides, he gave off a calm and composed air, underscored by an occasional smile that hinted at his reflective nature. But when the subject turned serious, his brows knitted, and his intense gaze seemed to darken, drawing listeners in.
parade honoring the troops returning from Operation Desert Storm,” he said. The project required him to distill hours of live footage into a compelling one-hour broadcast. “It was all on videotape back then, no nonlinear editing like today. It was intense, but the payoff was worth it.”
After decades of juggling a demanding broadcasting career and his side business, Black Tie Productions, Michael made a pivotal decision that most would hesitate to make. “In 2022, I retired from broadcasting to focus entirely on my company,” he said, his voice tinged with a mix of relief and excitement. But it was clear
“Television news teaches you everything,” Michael explained. “You’re constantly on your toes, dealing with breaking news, editing under tight deadlines. It’s a fast-paced environment that prepares you for anything.”
Over the next several years, Michael honed his craft at two major broadcast stations in San Diego: KGTV, the ABC affiliate, and KFMB, the CBS affiliate. His work was not limited to editing the daily deluge of news footage; he also delved into entertainment production, writing, and celebrity interviews. “I’d go up to Los Angeles for junkets and talk to celebrities,” he reminisced. “It was fun because I was doing things most people don’t get to experience.”
But it was his work on special projects that garnered him the industry’s highest accolades. Among his many awards, Michael proudly recalled winning an Emmy in 1991. “It was for a special we produced about a
that the transition was transformative. “For the first time, every minute of my day was mine. It allowed me to dive deeper into projects and connect more with the community.”
Community engagement has always been a cornerstone of Michael’s approach, exemplified by his role as an ambassador for the Temecula Chamber of Commerce. “Being an ambassador means you’re an extension of the chamber,” he explained. “You guide new members, attend ribbon cuttings, and represent the chamber in the business community.” His passion for supporting local businesses and fostering connections is evident, prompting us to give him the affectionate nickname “Mr. Ribbon Cutting.”
Through Black Tie Productions, Michael has brought his journalistic expertise into the world of visual storytelling. His knack for quick turnarounds, sharpened by years of working under newsroom deadlines, is a unique edge. “In television news, you might get the video five minutes before airtime. You learn to edit fast and never miss your slot,” he said with a chuckle. That same dedication now powers his work with clients, delivering polished productions with a personal touch.
One of his recent achievements includes a documentary on Reality Rally, a fundraising event benefiting Michelle’s Place Cancer Resource Center. The project won recognition at the IndieFest Film Awards, a proud addition to Michael’s growing list of accomplishments as a filmmaker. “Exploring the film festival circuit has been a new and exciting challenge,” he shared. “There’s so much to learn and so many opportunities to grow.”
As the conversation drew to a close, the golden hour light seemed to frame Michael in an almost cinematic way, fitting for a man whose life has revolved around capturing moments and crafting narratives. His journey from a mailroom intern with dreams of making movies to an award-winning storyteller is a testament to perseverance and passion.
Michael Scalise may have retired from broadcasting, but his love for visual storytelling and capturing moments burns brighter than ever, making him not just a creator but a curator of timeless moments.
