Brady’s boys prepare to take on EA SAMUEL TURNER ’18

Fifth Former Jed Senior laces up his cleats. Standing to his right, Sixth Former Kyle Wagner unties a netted bag, releasing a wave of soc-

cer balls. One of the balls trickles over to Sixth Former Michael Pilkington, who starts kicking it around. Fifth Former Nick Brill-Edwards juggles another. Memorial Field seems large and looming, but soon more balls cut through the thick wind and more players dance on the turf. Another day of soccer practice commences. Today, however, two star players sit on the sidelines. Injury plagues Sixth Form Captains Will Baltrus and Parker Gravina. Baltrus, starting goalie since Fourth Form year, may not return to the field this season, but his presence is still tangible. Head Coach Mr. Bill Brady said, “He’s quietly been doing a great job behind the scenes, with the younger guys especially, keeping them on course and focused through the ups and downs.” Sixth Former Bobby Stratts and Fourth Former William Boyes have defended the net in Baltrus’s absence. Sharing the responsibility, the two goalies have smoothly transitioned into their starting role, with Stratts starting most games and Boyes building his confidence. Fifth Former Dan Calvelli said, “Baltrus’s injury did rattle us, but our other two goalies have stepped in and done an amazing job. And even though he went down, Baltrus has been pushing us from the sidelines, keeping us focused.” Gravina has been in and out of the lineup with a hip injury, but abounding senior leadership and exceptional underclass performance has kept the team in high spirits. “My responsibility as captain,” said Gravina, “is to get the team riled up and playing with passion: every single game requires high intensity.” Sixth Formers Michael Pilkington and Niklas Golz both recently served as in-field captains, and “Younger guys have really stepped up and played

big roles for us, especially Fourth Formers M.J. Atkins, Mitchell Hark, and Luke Macione,” said Fifth Former Dan Calvelli. The team has drawn enormous strength from the depth of its lineup. The team’s bout of injuries has enabled many younger players to garner experience in competitive games. So far this season, the Fords are 8-8-2; they

While the Inter-Ac title is out of reach, the Fords aim to clinch the PAISAA title this next week. On Friday, November 3rd, the Fords faced Germantown Friends School in the first round of the PAISSA tournament. An overtime goal by Fifth Former Griffin Wada resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Fords. The Fords will face off against Episcopal Academy on Monday, November 6th in the PAISSA quarterfinals. Monday, however, will only be the first matchup against EA that week; the Fords will again battle the Churchmen on Saturday, November 11th: EA Day. Let’s travel back to the Fo rd s’ earlier encounter with the Churchmen this season. The team traveled down to Talen Energy Stadium, home of the Philadelphia Union. The field was pristine, the competition fierce, and the Fords ready. cont. pg. 5

are on track to finish third in the InterAc. In every game, however, “Whether it was Conestoga or South Kent, we haven’t felt like anybody has played better soccer than us,” said Coach Brady.
