ords Basketball is young and hungry, but the team is also contending with injuries to two key players, Fifth Former Duke Cloran and Fourth Former Emmanuel Butts. With Inter-Ac play set to kick off on January 5, the team hopes to figure out its identity without two of its stars. In the wake of these injuries, other players will have to step into a larger role on the floor. “I think they’re doing a good job,” Head Coach Mr. Bernie Rogers said. “It kind of changes who you are as a team a little bit, so we’re trying to find different roles for guys, and trying to figure out what’s the best way to play for the guys who are healthy. It’ll probably be a learning process through the preseason to figure it out.” Two players who will help carry the load are Fifth Formers Jacob and Leo Becker, who transferred to the school this year. “They’re really unselfish; they’re great guys,” Coach Rogers said. “We’re just kind of throwing a lot at them, and I think they will get better and better as the season goes on.” The Beckers are talented players in their own right, but their experience of playing together provides valuable on-court chemistry. con’t on p. 14

Service at Haverford... and beyond
Milan Varma ’25
S
ervice is known as a noble cause, taken up by many to improve major aspects of our world. But service can take the smallest of forms, attainable by small efforts that compound into massive effects. Service is a way of giving back to the universe that has given us so much, serving not only our surroundings but ourselves. It is well known that the holiday season is the season of giving, with celebrations such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Diwali, and many more. One less well-known celebration is that of GivingTuesday, which is, according to GivingTuesday.org, a “global generosity movement unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.” On campus, service comes alive during this season. From the Can Drive to the Turkey Drive, the entire school works together to do their part for the community. Though Haverford does not have a service-hour requirement, it emphasizes service learning. One of the main methods of giving back to the community is the Can Drive, run by the service board, which is headed by Director of Service Learning Ms. Jini Loos.
