Local (Polegate) AltNet Lightning Fibre has launched its highly anticipated Full Fibre Broadband Network in North Hailsham, with the full town roll out predicted to be completed by Christmas.

Privately-funded, the local network builder, operator and ISP uses a combination of existing Openreach ducts and poles via the Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA), and brand new infrastructure using micro-trenches in public highways, pavements and verges. Once a customer signs up, the fibre optic is extended from the street right into the modem inside the proper ty. This Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) network is more reliable and much faster than the old Fibre to the Cabinet (FTTC) broadband we’re all used to.

The company is ‘community-centric’ - delivering Full Fibre connectivity whilst making a positive im pact in the communities it serves. This includes an ongoing financial partnership with Hailsham Ac tive, supporting local sports and recreation clubs. The company is the Digital Partner to both Hailsham Festival and Hailsham Artists Network, and sponsors the Hailsham Festival Virtual Art Festival.

The Government’s Levelling Up White Paper, pub lished in Feb 2022, set a target for gigabit-broad band to be available nationwide by 2030. National Coverage is defined as 99% of premises. An ambi tious target, but the Government recognises that the industry will build in harder to reach areas only with ‘public funding alongside commercial roll out’.

The company aims to reach almost every home and business in Hailsham, revolutionising broadband access for everyone. With 95% of employ ees living in East Sussex, and an HQ and 7-day Customer Service Team (8am to 8pm) oper ating from Polegate, this is as local as it gets.

Hailsham Mayor, Councillor Paul Holbrook, recent ly cut the ribbon on the new primary node cabinet for Hailsham North and commented, “I have been very impressed by Ben and his team. Lightning Fi bre have engaged proactively with local Council lors, looking into complaints promptly and resolving matters that inevitably arise with a project of this scale. This new network is fantastic for our town.”

Ben Ferriman, Lightning Fibre’s Founder and CEO, added, “We are ahead of schedule and hope to complete the whole town by the end of 2022. That will mean over 10,000 homes and business es can, at last, say goodbye to rubbish broadband!” Find out more www.LightningFibre.co.ukat or call 01323 380260

With it being so hot it is very strange to be talking about Christmas but, details of the towns Christmas events organised by the town council have been published and if it’s any where near as good as last year then it’s going to be spectacular.

We are really looking forward to the array of events being showcased and we hope you will enjoy it as much as we will. As always thank you for reading and have a great couple of months ahead. EYE ON HAILSHAM - GOOD NEWS STORY

Hailsham’s Superman!own

Keith Dickman doesn’t often shout about what he does, but if you scratch beneath the surface you will find nothing much less than a superman! For many years he has been raising money for charities – Marie Curie, Demelza Hospice Care for Children, Great Ormond Street and the British Heart Founda tion , to name just a few, and there are many oth ers. He is also an active member of Hailsham Lions. In September he is attempting to climb Kiliman jaro to raise money for Demelza, at the age of 63. You can see him on his static bike outside the BP ga rage at Pevensey some days raising money towards the trip, and last weekend the garage ran a raffle to support him too. He cycled for 5hrs last Thursday and a further 6hrs on Saturday. He will be doing more “rides” during August to raise awareness of Demelza, as well as funds.

To donate visit raising/keith-dickman13https://www.justgiving.com/fund-

On chatting to this man I feel exhausted just listening to what he gets up to.- Amongst his charity fundrais ing efforts he has done sponsored cycle rides, bungee jumps, abseils, long distance walks and is waiting to be allowed to do a wing-walk, but still has to knock off a few pounds! Weight is a vital condition for that event.

Somehow I think he manages to find 48 hours in every day! And where he finds the energy…? Well done Keith! I hope people in Hailsham will continue to sup port him.

Normally with our restaurant reviews we stick to just food however when you are going to a Tap Room it would be quite strange to not try what they have to offer at the bar. These guys regularly have 7-8 keg beers and 4 cask beers at any one time with this being the case we decided to have a go at a tasting flight so we could try three types of their beer. Cleverly, the glasses for a flight are 1/3 of a pint each so you can try three types of beer in one pint! The beers we chose were the well-rounded How’s the Serenity, it’s really fruity and super hoppy and definitely Jarred’s favour “ When it comes to food at Gun Brewery they have a rotation of fabulous food outlets which range from pizza to tacos and even Egyptian! ”

While on the theme of design we’re going to do our first shout out for the toilets of a venue. They are so high end and completely unexpected and whilst we know you want to know about the food and drink we really felt they deserve a small mention!

This place really has been created with an expert eye for detail and design, the views from the outside tables are stunning and the actual tap room itself was quite reminiscent of my home country Australia. It has a contemporary style with huge views of the brewery where all the magic happens.

EYE ON FOOD

This edition we headed a bit further outside of Hailsham than we have before to visit the newly built Tap Room at the Gun Brewery in Gun Hill.

Gun Brewery gunbrewery.co.uk www.hailshameye.co.uk

ite. Up next was, Spin Drift, this dry hopped IPA is a real summer time one, packed with stone fruit and citrus flavours, perfect on a hot one! Lastly, Scaramanga, one that has been tried and tested previously at Hellingly Rugby Club, perfect if you’re in for the long haul being only 3.9% ABV and was great with the food we ordered. When it comes to food at Gun Brewery they have a rotation of fabulous food outlets which range from pizza to tacos and even Egyptian! They keep their website updated to let you know what is coming up for the month. Currently there are 7 different ven dors for September so you will be spoilt for choice. We were lucky enough to be able to sample the pizza from The Dough Miky pizza oven. This pizza is good, as in really good. It’s a perfect go at an authentic Ital ian pizza, the choice of toppings was great, definitely something for everyone. Our favourites were the Salame Piccante – not crazy hot but a good bit of heat and Broccoli which had a garlic base which was a first for us and something we would like to repeat. The toppings were super generous and you could tell they were great quality too. The brewery have told us that they are planning to stick with having The Dough Miky there every Sunday! We were so impressed with the variety of products they had to offer, we decided to take some home for another day. We were in luck as they sell 6 of their beers in cans as well as 4 in mini kegs and a few more types in 750ml bottles including a barrel aged stout. If you’re interested in how the magic happens at the brewery then make sure you head to their website to find out more about their brewery tours. What a brilliant way to spend a Saturday lunchtime doing a tour and beer tasting for £20 a head!

Hold on to your vinyl as Hailsham music writer Sharon Davis celebrates the career of Diana Ross

September/October 1980

Sharon www.radio-illumini.comDavis

EYE ON MUSIC www.hailshameye.co.uk14

Simply titled “Diana”, the front of the black-and-white gate fold cover showed the singer dressed in tattered jeans and t-shirt, while the full colour inner sleeve revealed her in a more elegant pose. And within the first few months of its release, the album, which was crammed with hits, passed one million sales in the UK alone.

As Diana Ross has recently been cleaning up over here with a series of sold-out arena concerts and, of course, her spectacular performances at Glaston bury and at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee concert, I thought a quick back step in time was needed. And we stopped in September 1980 when she was riding high with “My Old Piano” following a short hiatus from our charts. So here’s the story… Diana needed help to revive her flagging recording career, so she recruited the services of Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards from Chic, the top selling dance outfit at the time. This was the first time she had handed over an entire album to someone else to write, arrange and produce. However, upon hearing the finished product, Diana admitted it sounded too much like Chic. While she quickly realised she was onto a winner with the album, knowing it would attract a younger audience, Diana needed to personalise it, so returned to the studio with producer Russ Terrana to change some musical interludes and to bring her voice more to the front of the music on certain tracks. The result was a ground-breaking album of the eighties.

A convincing story was obviously told!

The result was rather bland, featuring her dancing around a white piano, but, to be fair, it was filmed in secret at a moment’s notice in a London hotel, with very few takes, because it was against the Musicians Union’s regulations at the time. Motown executives in London had to convince the authorities that the filming took place during a lightning trip to Geneva to enable it to be shown on British television.

The first extracted single was “Upside Down” followed by “My Old Piano” which peaked at number five in September 1980. Diana was enjoying a private holiday in London with her boyfriend Kiss’ Gene Sim mons yet she agreed to host a press conference to collect numerous outstanding British awards and film a video to accompany the release of “My Old Piano”.

Wealth Check How

Another option which may help to prevent fraud is to put a power of attorney in place, which allows someone you trust to make decisions on your behalf. In England and Wales, there are two types: health and welfare (covering decisions on things like med ical care) and property and financial affairs (covering decisions on things like managing a bank account or paying bills). The second can be particularly effective in combatting financial abuse within families as the at torney has a legal responsibility to act according to your best interests.

A financial adviser can help you set up a power-of-attorney and help you prevent fraud by speaking to you whenever anything regarding financial matters doesn’t quite feel right.

“If you’ve had no real experience with financial ser vices previously and you receive a call from someone pretending to be your financial adviser or your bank, you’re going to be more likely to believe them be cause you have nothing to refer back to,” she says. “So please always make sure you contact your adviser to talk to them”.

Powers of Attorney involve the referral to a service that is separate and distinct to those offered by St. James’s Place and are not regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. to protect yourself from fraud.

EYE ON FINANCE www.hailshameye.co.uk16

Loneliness has many negative effects on those who have the misfortune to experience it, most notably poor mental and physical health. But one further consequence that’s often overlooked is the increased likelihood of becoming the victim of a financial scam.

According to a recent survey by the Nationwide Building Society, 25% of people in the UK who have experienced loneliness or social isolation at least once a week have been scammed. A primary factor in their vulnerability is not having someone with whom they can discuss anything they might feel unsure of, says Professor Keith Brown, a leading expert in financial fraud among the elderly. “It’s the lack of having somebody with you to double-check things”, Brown adds. How to protect yourself from fraud So, how can lonely people protect themselves from fraudsters?

One effective way is to contact your fi nancial adviser to double-check anything finance re lated you might not be sure of, says Hannah Coffey, Vulnerability and Client Assistance Manager at St. James’s Place. This is especially important if you’re not very experienced at handling financial matters –as is often the case with older people who have lost a spouse who dealt with the money side of things.

When selecting new trees, it’s sensible to purchase a species native to your area’s hardiness zone. Trees native to milder climates may experience significant stresses during winter months.

Lay down a layer of mulch around the bases of your trees to moderate temperature fluctuations and moisture loss. Don’t forget to leave a space between the mulch and the stem of the tree to prevent bark decay.

In preparing for winter, remember to prune only after your trees have entered dormancy to reduce the risk of new growth.

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the evolution of design and design trends in 2022, and beyond.

Perhaps another thing I have noticed is the prominence of multiple toilets in new homes being built. It seems we have almost as many toilets now as we do bedrooms! As for the future design trends, well there is that say ing, “architecture is so slow there is no point trying to be fashionable with it because by the time you’ve built something it’s already out of date!”, and I think there is a lot of truth in that. Certainly, a good building will always fulfil the needs and loves of the people who inhabit it. It’s a place that needs to be responsive to the people. The very first part of that must always be shelter, and security, in all conditions. Once you’ve solved that you can start experimenting and having a bit of fun. With that in mind, I think entertainment space is rap idly becoming a priority; and with the cost of living continuing to increase, this will be even more the case going forward, where perhaps we’re swapping eating out for eating in.

personally, I would love to have a covered deck where I could just sit, sheltered, and just enjoy the view… perhaps with a glass of wine, and the guar antee of a sunset! When you factor in all these things it makes you real ise having all those toilets really doesn’t matter after all…!

It’s over 20 years since Grand Designs first appeared as a concept, and in marking that anniversary I’ve had a number of people ask me how new design and ofthe-moment architectural planning has changed over that period, and what evolution we might see in fu ture. Well, with tongue firmly in cheek, I’ll begin by noting that these days there is an unend ing appetite for bifold doors! Also, a significant movement from tones of brown and black to the real on-trend colour of the moment, which is grey. I’ve always thought there is a real versatility to grey and that seems in evidence.

With the summer coming to a close, it’s back to school for many Wealden pupils. I am pleased that a number of these pupils will be returning to better facilities that will enhance their learning experience.

I want to ensure that every child in Wealden gets the same education funding and opportunities as pupils across East Sussex and the rest of the country, and I will continue to campaign for more government support for Wealden to ensure that our pupils can thrive in an improved environment and reach their full potential.

Last year, I was pleased to open a fantastic addition to Wealden education services, Ropemakers Academy, a new Hailsham free school providing education and care for primary and secondary school pupils who have been identified as having complex special edu cational needs.

This year, I am incredibly proud to have secured government funding for building upgrades at three Wealden schools: Beacon Academy in Crowborough, St Mary’s School in Maynard’s Green and Hailsham Community College. These allocations are in addition to the £1.3 million already secured for Beacon Academy last year and are an excellent win for Wealden.

September also means back to Parliament for me, and I look forward to another busy term ahead and to welcoming more Wealden schools to Westminster, for a first-hand experience of our democracy and for an opportunity to quiz me on my role and work as an MP.

It is always encouraging to see our young residents engaged in learning more about active citizenship, and it is a great testament to the fantastic education they are receiving at Wealden schools.

Hailsham Community College is a fantastic school and every year I am proud to be championing their careers fair, which exhibits local work opportunities and inspires the future career choices of our students. I was pleased to welcome the COP26 President to the school earlier this year, to give the students a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to discuss Britain’s leading work on tackling climate change and inspire them to consider careers in delivering the green agenda.

A fleet of 11 Ebikes, 3 of which have baby seats and various sized pedal bikes, EBike Hire will have something for all ages and riding abilities. A perfect day out for just you or the whole family. We arrived for the afternoon session and Natalie gave us a thorough safety talk about the bikes, we were given a hi-vis jacket, helmet, some directions and off we went. The first thing we noticed was how easy it was to slow down once the battery power kicks in. We felt very safe on these bikes, once you stopped peddling the power would cut off immedi ately and the bike would slowly come to a stop or you can brake the traditional way! It was incredibly windy so we were very happy that we had some battery power to help us along.

In this edition with our Town City Card we head over to Camber Sands for the next Days Out Sussex review.

On a very blustery day something more suited to windsurfing, which may I add, you can do whilst in Camber Sands we went over to try out EBike Hire, an electric fat bike and pedal cycle hire company based in Camber Sands, Rye.

We headed along the sea wall about a mile before the wind and sea spray got too much and headed back to some sheltered paths, this consisted of a small journey along the road until we met up with the newly surfaced cycle path which would eventually take us right into the Rye Harbour. Rye itself being a wonderfully preserved medieval town, we were really excited to go take a look. Before we got there, we were able to give the bikes a bit of off road cycling which is what they are made for, riding on some gravel tracks and grass fields, these bikes didn’t miss a beat and easily glided over whatever surface we faced, unfortunately given the weather conditions we decided to stay off the sand dunes but from all reports these bikes are up for that challenge and sounds like the best reason to come back and try it Beautifulout.views, friendly sheep and a quick stop off at the park with the little one was all we could squeeze in for this excursion given it was a trip shared with a little one. If we had more time to explore, we could very easily spend the whole day travelling around the Rye Ride Trail which is part of the National Cycle Network, cared for by Sustrans.

Prices starting at £12.50 for the pedal bike hire and £30 for the ebikes it doesn’t break the bank and you can create some life-long

The reality though is that the communications net work is run by four companies and four companies only – O2, EE, Vodafone and Three. Every other provider is piggybacking off their signal, so, in effect, it’s the same signal.

The recently launched Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers a grant of £5,000.00 towards the costs of installing a heat pump system. Renewable heating systems are also zero-rated for VAT. As with any heating system it is important to ensure that the amount of heat lost from a property is kept to a minimum. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme requires minimum levels of thermal efficiency such as loft insulation, double glazing, and cavity wall insulation to qualify for the grant. [exemptions can apply].

Aspen Renewables Ltd have been designing, install ing, and maintaining Air Source Heat Pumps for over 10 years; in all types of property from new builds to properties that are over 300 years old. An Air Source Heat Pump harvests ‘free’ energy from the outside air, typically delivering three to four times more heat energy than the electrical energy that the system uses. This heat energy is transferred into the heating / hot water system and operates in a similar way to a conventional boiler system via underfloor heating or modified radiator systems.

Elsie Bowerman was born in Tunbridge Wells on 18 December 1889, the daughter of William & Edith Bowerman. William Bowerman owned rental properties and several drapers’ shops in Hastings and St. Leonards. However in 1890 he sold his shops and retired. Elsie was raised in comfortable, but unos tentatious circumstances. Although wealthy her par ents were very careful with money. William frequently appealed against local rates and had many rental prop erties reassessed in his favour. William Bowerman died when Elsie was 5 years old. However Elsie and her mother lived comfortably on rent income from their numerous properties. In 1901 Elsie attended Wycombe Abbey School, High Wycombe. Then 11, she was the youngest girl there. However she achieved first place in a form of eleven girls nearly two years her senior. In 1907 Elsie en tered Girton College, Cambridge where she studied Mediaeval and Modern Languages. At college, she or ganised talks by the Women’s Social and Political Un ion (WSPU). She wore suffragette badges in lectures, shared and sold copies of Votes for Women, and or ganised debates. During the university holidays, Elsie was an Organiser for the Hastings Branch of the InWSPU.April 1912, Elsie and Edith, travelled to America as first-class passen gers on the Titanic to visit William Bowerman’s rela tions in America and Canada. When the Titanic sank Elsie and her mother were placed in Lifeboat no. 6 and later rescued and taken to New York. Elsie and Edith then continued with their itinerary. In 1914, the suffrage movement suspended their ac tivities and the WSPU became ‘The Women’s Party’ and encouraged women to volunteer for war work and men to sign up. Elsie became a paid organiser and toured nation-wide with Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst. At each town, Elsie organised and adver tised mass-meetings. In some places she addressed Elsie Bowerman

She then worked briefly for the Ministry of Information before spending three years in the USA as a liaison officer in the BBC Overseas Services and later became Chief of General Services to the London office, responsible for conferences. EYE ON HISTORY

Having been so involved in political campaigning and war work, and with her large private income it was not until the age of 31 that Elsie turned her sights to a profession. She chose the law. Elsie was accepted as a student by the Middle Temple in 1921 and was called to the Bar in 1924. She became the first woman barrister to appear at the Old Bailey when she won a libel action brought by the National Union of Seamen against a communist. This was perhaps ironic, given her anti-union beliefs.

Elsie became one of the first women Election Agents when she acted in that capacity for Christabel Pankhurst, who stood unsuccessfully for the Women’s Party at Smethwick, in the first General Election in which women were permitted to stand as candidates.

In her diary

Elsie described pitching tents for the field hospital, sleeping in the open air, having singing par ties with soldiers around camp fires and going on a cross-country ride with Russian officers. She was in St Petersburg in 1917 and her diary contains eye-wit ness testimony of living in the midst of the Russian LaterRevolution.in1917

In July 1916 the Honourable Mrs. Haverfield, a lead ing light in the pro-war movement, invited Elsie to go to Serbia as a driver. This all-female unit travelled via Scandinavia, Archangel, Moscow and Odessa, to serve the Serbian and Russian armies in Romania. In No vember 1916 they set up a hospital near the Danube, and then had to dismantle it and join the retreat to the Russian frontier.

In 1918

Elsie was then 63, an assertive, no-nonsense woman, who drove an impressive black Rover car and is re ported to have once had a council parking restriction lifted because it inconvenienced her. Throughout her life Elsie retained her connections with Wycombe Abbey. She was a member of the school council. She helped set up an endowment fund and established the Dove-Bowerman Trust, dedicated to the fortunes of Wycombe Abbey and in 1965 pro duced a book about its founder Dame Frances Dove, entitled Stands There a School. After her mother died in October 1953, Elsie purchased Batchelors, in Cowbeech. Her legal career ended in 1963 when she closed her chambers. Elsie died on 18th October 1973, aged 83, leaving over £143,000 - the equivalent of over £1.7 million today. She made a number of bequests, to friends and charities, including Warbleton Parish Church but the bulk of her possessions and estate went to Wycombe Abbey School. Although her funeral was held at War bleton PC, Elsie was buried in the family grave, along with her parents, in Hastings cemetery. A Blue Plaque was unveiled on 19th November 2005 at 23 Silchester Road, St Leonards, in memory of Elsie.

The Titanic lifeboat No. 6

After her return to England in the late 1940s, Elsie spent weekdays at her London flat and weekends at one of her properties: 23-25 Silchester Road, St Leon ards. Edith, now 87, was in a nearby nursing home.

Elsie supported the Pankhurst’s in or ganising mass meetings to encourage men to join the Forces and women to volunteer for war work. She later joined the newly-formed ‘Women’s Guild of Em pire.’ as honorary secretary. The Guild believed that strikes caused misery and unemployment and that unions should keep out of politics.

The project will be funded by using the Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money and fu ture-proof the play areas for the next 10-15 years.

“The proposed revamp of some of the maintained play areas is part of the Town Council’s continued commitment to improve local parks and open space,” said Works Manager Richard Gillett. “Children’s play areas play a vital role in outdoor recreation, providing children with an area to relax, meet friends and play.”

“The Town Council’s play areas strike a balance be tween providing stimulating play and meeting current safety requirements, which is why we pride ourselves in maintaining our facilities to the highest standards and undertaking regular inspections, repairs and replacements where necessary, as well as upgrades such as those discussed by town councillors recently.”

The Council has already agreed a budget of over £40K for the overlaying of the wet pour surface at the sites and the Town Council has fur ther agreed to invest between £100K to £120K for upgrades and improvements to play areas.

It was highlighted at a recent meeting of the Assets Management Committee that the play areas locat ed in Battle Road, Stroma Gardens and next to the Maurice Thornton Playing Field require the replace ment of some play equipment, due to coming to the end of its serviceable life or the onset of corrosion.

In addition to Battle Road, Stroma Gardens and Maurice Thornton, the Town Council currently manages play areas in Western Road and Quinnell Drive, in addition to two outdoor gym sites and a children’s skate park.

Children in Hailsham can look forward to new improved facilities as plans to improve some play areas were discussed by town councillors, with proposals set to deliver an exciting upgrade to play equipment.

“The Battle Road, Stroma Gardens and Mau rice Thornton play facilities are well-used and the proposed improvement works on those sites will see the installation of new and more inclu sive equipment, plus it will also help the Town Council tackle the challenge of a growing num ber of families with children in the Hailsham area.”

Town Council Plans ToPlayImproveAreas

With the success of the new play area at Western Road, the Town Council has taken this opportu nity to bring the three play areas up to optimum standard, offering excellent play value for all users.

Encouraging people to mark the date of the event in their diaries now, Town Mayor Councillor Paul Holbrook said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is always one of the highlights of the year in the town centre and indicates that festivities are underway. I hope many people decide to attend the event, enjoy the entertainment on offer and get in the festive spirit with their friends and family.” Fur ther information on both Christmas events will be announced soon. Hailsham Farmers’ Market will hold a special Christ mas event at the Livestock Market site in Market Street on the same day, selling local, quality, traceable food and crafts. There will also be festive entertainment on-site, details of which will be announced soon.

The town centre will be home to a range of stalls selling fine food, Christmas gifts, confectionery and other items at the Christmas Market event in December, and various festive refreshments will be on sale to tempt visitors.

Following the success of last year’s Christmas town events, Hailsham Town Council and project partners are in full swing with the planning and organisation of this year’s Christmas Lights Switch-on and Christmas Market, which take place in Vicarage Field on Friday 25th November and Saturday 10th December respectively.

Countdown To Christmas Events In Hailsham

Market traders can benefit from booking a free stall on the day and are encouraged to do so by calling 01323 841702 or emailing enquiries@hailsham-tc.gov.uk.

The event will also feature Santa and his Sleigh as well as live music, plus there will be carol singing in Vicarage Field and at the Cattle Market site (details to be announced soon). Hailsham FM will be play ing popular Christmas tunes throughout the day.

Pupils from Hailsham Community College and Hailsh am Primary Academy will be carol singing before the official switch-on and Santa will be attending (courtesy of Hailsham Rotary Club), handing out sweets to chil dren. Hailsham FM will be broadcasting live at the event.

Councillor Nigel Coltman, Vice-Chairman of the Town Council’s Communities Committee said: “It may only be September, but we’re already getting into the Christmas spirit here on the Committee. We received encouraging feedback from both shoppers and stallholders in previous years and are looking forward to doing it all again this Decem ber and making the event an even bigger success.”

Step Two Add the marshmallows and cook gently until they are completely melted and blended, stirring con stantly. Step Three Take the pan off the heat and im mediately add the cereal, mixing lightly until well coated.

(makes 24 squares)

You’d think this was designed to keep the children happy, and while that’s okay with me, it is the adults who seem to find this baked treat particularly irresistible. If I can find a tub of edible disco glitter in one of my cup boards, I sprinkle some on while the marshmallow is still sticky, but it has a certain pearly, luminescent appeal as it is. It’s also beautiful cut into squares. Alternatively, you could turn this into more of a pickable pud, by cutting the slab into teeny-tiny squares so that people can pop one straight into their mouth.

Ingredients

Step Five Let the marshmallow crispy squares cool completely in the tin and then cut them into 24 squares.

For the cakes

StepMethodOne Melt the butter in a large, heavybased saucepan over a low heat.

Step Four Press the mixture into a greased 32cmx23cm tin /13x9” pan; you may have to put on vinyl CSI gloves and press it down into the corners, as it will be very sticky. Flatten the top and then scatter over the edible glitter or sprinkles, if so inclined.

The 2022/23 pre-season is well under way and the numbers have been excellent with over 30 players reporting every week, with the first league game for both the 1st and 2nd XV starting on the 24th of Sep tember the boys will be hitting the ground running there is no doubt.

The squad this year sees returning senior players but there has been a huge influx of players from the U23 category who are showing real promise and a shining light toward the future. The great numbers at train ing have shown the coaches that there will be some fierce competition for places this year, but the one thing the players have shown already is that there is a real unity for a whole club squad approach with everyone not only looking to propel both teams and the club forward into a strong starting position but also to achieve their best results individually.

The league restructure this year in Sussex 1 sees the return of some fixtures against sides such as Steyning who the club have not faced for some time but will bring superb competition and highlights. It will cer tainly be a very competitive league with other excellent fixtures to look forward to, non other than Jersey away.

EYE ON FARMING

On the farm Whilst grass stops growing when it’s too hot, clo ver will continue to grow, as it is deeper rooted and more drought resistant than grass. However, it’s also been too hot for the clover! The fields on the farm in the middle of August looked like a bone-dry farm in Australia. Fortunately, our fields on the marsh have been still producing grass. These fields are two me tres below sea level and have a higher water table. They can still produce grass when the fields on the higher ground don’t. Indeed, in July, seventy acres of our fields on the marsh produced a fantastic cut of grass for silage. Our silage clamp is full which is great, as it means we have plenty of grass forage to feed the cows next winter. We’ve also had a bumper crop of hay. All this forage has already proved to be extremely useful as our grass completely dried up in the hot dry August, resulting by the cows’ milk yield dropping significantly. To try to save the milk yield, we have had to start feeding our winter forage already.

The 5-year lease agreement is now signed, and the Borough Market Trust has just approved the final proposed layout of the shop, along with the new proposed plumbing and electrics to service the raw ice cream making, chilled and freezer display units, light

News from the farm Camping and Ice Cream from the farm.

Our five-week aged grass fed dairy has incredible fla vour. It is so different to the beef you can buy in a supermarket. Normal beef breeds of cattle are good at converting the food they eat into putting on mus cle, and to do this quickly, they are fed corn and soya and finished at around 18 months old. This is the fast grown beef sold cheaply and is widely available. How ever, dairy breeds are good at converting the food they eat into producing milk and grow their muscles very slowly. In addition, our cattle are not fed any corn or soya… just grass. Our animals are between four to fourteen years old, resulting in so much more marbling of the meat, texture and flavour. Our fiveweek aged grass fed dairy beef is amazing. Why not try some or take advantage of the discounted prices we’re offering on our frozen beef. Once tried, you won’t buy anywhere else! Whether its burgers, beef sausages, mince for an incredible spag bog, diced beef for an unbelievable casserole (you won’t need stock cubes to give it flavour) or steaks or a joint for a Sun day roast, you will realise what beef should be!

ing etc. We can now appoint a contractor to con struct, and shop fit our unit. The images shown here are virtual structural modelling of our shop without the artwork, branding, and storytelling which are currently being finalised. At the moment, there is not a shop in London that you would call ‘the dairy shop,’ it doesn’t exist. This is the opportunity we have! Behind the till area, will be the food processing area where the raw ice cream will be made. The ice cream maker is an incredible piece of kit. We will be able to make up a two and a half litre ice cream mix using our ingredients in front of the public and put it into the top of the ice cream maker. Ten minutes later, wonderful raw ice cream comes out at the front of the machine! Real food theatre! We feel the new shop at Borough Market will really be incredible for our brand. We hope it will become the ‘go to’ shop in London for the very best in dairy produce and dairy beef. It is an opportunity to bring the story of our farm in Hailsham into the heart of the food world in TheCampsiteLondon!newcampsite on the farm is proving to be a suc cess. We have had a few campers in August. They have all absolutely loved its rural setting, with long views facing east over the Pevensey Levels. It is a beautiful peaceful setting with the added charm of the cows walking past twice a day! For further information about camping on the farm, please email camp ing@hookandson.co.uk

The park has been operating for over 23 years and has seen some amazing changes and additions which have only enhanced your experience whilst visiting. The latest attraction to be opened to the public is Jungle Kingdom, there is 10 additional species added to the zoo animal collection with a new Meerkat mob where little Chewie is housed (see issue 67), there’s even a slide you can go on that goes through their enclosure. The enclosures are all open air and with curved glass panels allow anyone to get ‘nose to nose’ with them. This feature is throughout the Jungle King dom. Special mention must go to the Asian small claw otters. Their enclosure features a 2 meter deep pool complete with a two tier cascading waterfall. The otters are hungry little mammals and are fed five times a day. If you see a crowd then you are in for a treat as the animal team throw the fish and shellfish into the enclosure. Seeing the otters swim underwater to locate their food is mesmerising. This section is phase 1. I have some inside knowledge on phase 2 and phase 3 and it’s going to be amazing and we can’t wait to tell you about it in due time. The Dragon Castle, is a 5 story beautifully crafted wooden castle sitting on about an acre of land which is relatively new as it was constructed in lockdown. It has many slides, tunnels, zip wires and spiral stair cases to ascend to the top for magical views of the park and the surrounding area, it is worth squeezing through the tight passages to get to the top!

time. The Sherlock Holmes Experience is officially licensed by the Conan Doyle Estate. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes and The Lost World, great nephew Richard Doyle opened the Experience last Easter. He said that the experience was beyond his expectations and ‘Arthur’ would have approved with his whole heart. Sherlock Holmes was actually retired by the famous author to East Dean (9 miles from Knockhatch Adventure Park) to read his books, keep bees and live the life of a hermit. There is also a statue of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in near by Crowborough. This October Half Term, Sherlock Holmes will have a new case for the public to solve. Apparently there have been several suspicious deaths and a large hound has been seen in the vicinity!
