Sellers get ready for record breaking spring property market •

By Mike Crane Mike Crane, of Crane & Co Estate Agents, reports that the property market is set to see record breaking prices this spring. He encourages local people who are thinking of selling to get in touch as soon as they can. So far this year the property market has seen: •

Prices 9.5% higher than a year ago, the highest annual rate of growth since September 2014 More potential buyers sending enquiries to agents, with the number 16% higher than this time last year New property listings up 11% compared to the same period last year, suggesting more sellers are coming to market before looking for a property to purchase, to avoid missing out on their next home

The number of people requesting a home valuation from an estate agent is up 11% compared to last year London records the biggest annual jump in number of buyers sending enquiries of any region, and the highest annual rate of price growth since 2016, as the end of pandemic restrictions and a return to the office fuel renewed demand in the capital

Mike comments, “My advice to those thinking of selling is to bring your property to market as soon as possible. With prices set to reach a record high in May, this could be the strongest market for years to come. “Locally, we are seeing demand rise with many properties being sold within a week of being listed. We are very proud to have been recognised by Rightmove as the leading Hailsham Estate Agent for sales agreed so far in 2022, maintaining our position as the number one selling estate agency every year.” Crane & Co are recommending that sellers get in touch with them to discover the unique opportunities that define the current market as one of the best for property sellers in many years. Did You Even Intend To Hit Your Goals? Joby Johnson from Atomic Personal Training...

The above sentence is a really strange question! But asking it opens up an amazing way of looking at the goals you are trying to hit. My area of expertise is health and fitness, but I believe the principles apply nicely to any aspect of life.

So let’s dive into this question! We are a good chunk into 2022 and I would hazard a guess a lot of New Year resolutions are distant memories. So, as you review the first part of the year. ask yourself do you even plan to hit goals? Let’s take completing a couch to 5k as an example!

Is it scheduled?

Have you scheduled in your runs just like you would work or other important commitments? Have you carved out time in your diary to allow for you to complete this goal? Or are you hoping it will just happen? Are you leaving up to how the day goes to see if you have time?

Who have you told?

Telling people creates a huge amount of accountability. Do you tell people your goals or do you keep them to yourself because its easier to fail in private and you’ve not even convinced yourself you will commit to it? Telling people makes it real. If you’re planning on changing food habits or cutting down on alcohol you will likely need to tell people so they give you the support you will need.

Is it visual?

Take our couch to 5k example. Is the app on your home screen? Are your running shoes packed and ready? Do you have things to keep you focused like running podcasts or books? Maybe you track your progress on a sheet on the fridge? Perhaps you include the goal in some simple daily journaling, so you keep the goal fresh in your mind!

Is it booked?

Another incredible way of increasing accountability and the likely hood of success is to book something that will test your results. Imagine that couch to 5k leads to your first race? Maybe you do it for charity? How likely would you be to hit your goals with those easy to follow tips above? A ton of people would have set this exact goal at the start of the year…. They would have failed because they missed a run because they were busy, it was easy to fail because nobody else knew it was a goal and there would have been no consequences because there wasn’t a deadline looming anyway! So make sure you add this rocket pack to your results the next time you set a goal!

Action!

Schedule in your workouts , meals , runs , walks , weigh ins etc Tell the right people in your life to hold you accountable and give you the support you need when you need it. And book yourself a deadline so you can’t back out!

EYE ON FINANCE

The cost of a comfortable retirement The Retirement Living Standards explain exactly what a happy and enjoyable retirement will cost you.

We now have more information, more choices, and more responsibility for our retirement savings. But will the future we want be the future we are able to get? The Retirement Living Standards, launched by the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association (PLSA), has been developed to help people picture what kind of lifestyle they could have in the future. Pitched at three levels: minimum, moderate and comfortable, the standards have been designed to act as a practical and meaningful starting point for anyone who is unsure about how much to put away.

So what are the numbers? According to the trade association, a single person will need £10,200 a year to achieve the minimum living standard, £20,200 a year for moderate, and £33,000 a year for comfortable. For couples it is £15,700, £29,100 and £47,500. The minimum living standard covers most people’s basic needs plus enough for some fun - including participation in social occasions. For example, you could holiday in the UK, eat out about once a month and do some affordable leisure activities about twice a week. The moderate lifestyle provides, in addition to the minimum lifestyle, more financial security and more flexibility. For example, you could have a two-week holiday in Europe and eat out a few times a month. At the comfortable level, retirees could enjoy some luxuries like regular beauty treatments, theatre trips 10 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

and three weeks in Europe a year. By giving savers a general figure that they can understand, the hope is that savers can then start to develop their own personal targets based on their individual circumstances and aspirations.

Reality check Assuming you qualify for the full State Pension of £9,339 a year, the PLSA says you’ll still need to build up a pension pot worth at least £599,667 to achieve a comfortable retirement1. This is if you want to turn your pension into an annuity, which pays you a guaranteed annual income for life in retirement. Given that the average amount sitting in pension pots after a lifetime of saving is £59,2242, many retirees may be shocked to learn how little income their savings will provide. A financial adviser will give you an idea of what your retirement income will be, based on how much you’re saving. Read more about how much money you need to save for retirement. EYE ON MUSIC

June 1972 Hold on to your vinyl as Hailsham music writer Sharon Davis races back to the 1970s, to celebrate the music of T Rex... We’re jumping up a decade to get reacquainted with the pioneer of the glam rock movement and founder of the psychedelic folk group Tyrannosaurus Rex, who was first introduced to the viewing public by a performance on Top of the Pops for his first number one single “Hot Love”. Yeah, who else but Marc Bolan! In June ‘72, and now simply known as T Rex, Marc enjoyed his fourth but last number one single with “Metal Guru”, which further cemented his simple, easy, hippy musical style with (almost) nonsensical lyrics. His songs were cleverly honed for the mood of the moment, and his clothes, erm, somewhat unpredictable – top hats, feather boas, flowing blouses often trimmed with lace, brightly coloured satin trousers and jackets with the matching accessory of twinkling glitter across his face and in his hair, a shoulder length mass of beautiful curls. He was a cute young man with a cheeky smile. There was a real meaning behind “Metal Guru”. Marc used to say he sometimes wished for a place where he could go for a little peace and quiet; a place without telephones. He felt such an existence would be similar to that of a god - “’Metal Guru’ is that god….. It was an easy song to record. The band laid down their basic tracks in under two hours and went home, leaving Tony (Visconti, his producer) and

12 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

me to stay on to (finish) the guitar work.” Such was Marc’s loathing for phones that he never answered his own at home unless he knew exactly who was calling. To this end, he would issue his friends with either a specific time to phone or their own number of consecutive rings. This was of course before caller identity and mobile phones, and, as far as I can remember, his system worked pretty well. When “Metal Guru” was released on his own record label, T.Rex Wax Co, Marc’s previous record company, Fly, issued a ‘greatest hits’ package “Bolan Boogie” on the same day. Both single and album topped their respective chart, two weeks after being released. Marc was at the height of his career; his records sold hand over fist, his tours were sold out within hours and he was in demand the world over. “I am serious about my music” he said. “The glamour is just a fantasy thing.” Sharon Davis www.radio-illumini.com

EYE ON FOOD

In this edition of The Hailsham Eye we have guest reviewers Lesley and Duncan for our Where to eat in Hailsham article, as Chicken Pox has visited our household. If you are in search of a good breakfast in Hailsham take a short stroll down St Mary’s Walk just off the High Street. There you will find Bucklers Café offering an extensive breakfast menu as well as serving other delicious meals right throughout the day. Bucklers is open Monday – Saturday: 8am – 4pm and Sunday 9 – 3pm. They have plenty of choice for all tastes, including a good selection of vegetarian and vegan food. They also offer a Deli style take away menu of drinks, sandwiches, sausage rolls, homemade cakes and lots more! 14 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

“an extensive breakfast menu as well as serving other delicious meals right throughout the day.” We received a warm welcome as we walked into the café which was already busy on this sunny Good Friday morning. Whilst the café was full of happy customers, we did not feel overcrowded as the tables were well spaced apart in the modern, trendy style décor with a shabby industrial style and there are tables outside too. Our server, Mia, was very friendly and soon had our drinks, Earl Grey tea and an Americano coffee on our table as we waited for breakfast. Duncan who likes attention to detail was impressed by the large

teapot of loose-leaf tea and a fine china cup. Breakfast arrived and was a feast for the eyes. Lesley had ordered garlic mushrooms with additional poached eggs and bacon; a generous helping of succulent garlic mushrooms with halloumi, beautifully cooked and came served on sour dough toast. Duncan was equally happy with his choice of the Full Bucklers breakfast, a good helping of food if you are

feeling particularly hungry! This was a traditional English breakfast option with sausages, bacon, black pudding, hash browns, beans, tomato, mushroom, toast and a choice of eggs. Duncan chose scrambled on this occasion, and they were cooked to perfection. When further refreshment was required we chose a Folkington juice, Folkington is a local company based up the road in Arlington who provide a quality product who put an emphasis on quality and sustainability, we loved that Bucklers are supporting local businesses, so much so that all of the meat products used in Bucklers comes from Sussex Larder, literally 10 steps across from them. If we hadn’t been so full after breakfast, we may have stayed a little longer and sampled the many cakes and pastries on offer that sit temptingly on the top of the counter, perhaps another visit soon will be in order. Chris and Jack in the kitchen had done a great job. The food was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented, and we cannot recommend Bucklers café highly enough. As we were leaving we were told about the new Bucklers Club, this is a loyalty scheme that is linked with your phone and you can earn points every time you drink or dine with them and use these points to receive complimentary food and beverages. Fertilise your trees and shrubs as part of your normal annual program and finally, weed beds, cut back perennials and trim Autumn flowering shrubs as appropriate. See our new website for more details at www.townandcountrytreeservices.co.uk As our gardens start to come alive again after a long winter, the experts from Town and Country Tree Services highlights some essential jobs you can be doing as we approach Spring. Check over your trees for any damage that may have occurred over the winter months, and in addition check mulch to see if additional material needs to be added. Ideally the mulch should be 3-4 inches deep. Pests and diseases become more active during the spring months, so check your trees and shrubs regularly for any signs of past activity. If the spring weather is particularly dry, it is a good idea to water your trees and shrubs when necessary. Water uptake is critical during leaf and shoot development. Avoid using herbicides beneath trees that warn

SPONSORED EDITORIAL

Support needed for local plan.

When and where new homes are built is always a controversial subject. I receive a lot of correspondence on planning in Wealden, and I recognise the level of frustration at the current housing targets for Wealden. I fully acknowledge that we do need more homes, and a level of development in Wealden is inevitable. I see the need for affordable homes pop up daily in my casework. However, I am concerned about the unachievably high numbers for Wealden and about the data behind the current methods used for the housing need calculations. Having lobbied the Department of Housing since 2015, I have had meetings with many Housing Ministers over the years and a huge amount of work is going on behind the scenes to address the current situation. I continue working with Wealden District Council and the Department of Housing and last month I led a parliamentary debate to raise the matter with the Minister. I stressed that the current numbers for Wealden are absurdly high, they are based on outdated population projections, ignore the environmental constraints on the area and are not accompanied by any meaningful delivery of infrastructure such as road and rail upgrades, nor adequate provision of health and dental care, sewage and broadband. It is unfair that Wealden has to shoulder local needs 22 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

elsewhere in East Sussex because neighbouring authorities are not delivering their fair share. I urged the Minister to review why, considering that Wealden Council builds more homes than its neighbouring councils, we are not being prioritised for any Government funding to support the delivery of adequate infrastructure. I am pleased that the Minister has committed to continuing working with me and Wealden Council and confirmed that calls for making housing targets advisory, not mandatory were being “heard loud and clear” by the Department. Please remember that social media posts and emails to your MP do not count as objections in a formal Council consultation and that I have no jurisdiction over individual planning applications or what local Councillors approve or dismiss on local planning. But please be assured that I am supporting Wealden District Council where I can, to address the unfair housing numbers currently imposed on Wealden by the Government and I will continue to support the Council on this matter and in producing a local plan. I continue to work hard to ensure that your concerns are heard in Westminster. If you are a Wealden resident and require my assistance, please email nusrat. ghani.mp@parliament.uk.

Town Centre Businesses Invited To Take Part In Hailsham Jubilee Day Event Preparations by Hailsham News - in partnership with Hailsham Town Council - are under way for a string of events taking place in the town this June to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. In conjunction with the national celebrations to mark the milestone, plans are being finalised for a programme of events and entertainment taking place in and near the town centre from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June to coincide with the extended bank holiday, which will involve thousands of residents, local community groups, charities and schools. On Saturday 4th June in particular, the Town Council is organising a ‘Hailsham Jubilee Day’ shopping event - similar to the ‘Celebrate Hailsham Day’ events organised in recent years - whereby as many town centre shops, eateries and service providers are invited to participate by offering special discounts and promotions on their goods/services on the day. People will always come out for a bargain!” Mr Caira added: “Summer 2022 will be an exciting time for Hailsham, and on behalf of the Town Council, I’m delighted that we have been able to finance the cost of organising the celebrations, so ably being carried out by Hailsham News with our staff and Council member support. This year, as we’ll be celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we’re aiming to do something bigger and better than ever before.” “We are confident that the programme of events to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be well received by residents and visitors alike, as well as bringing energy and atmosphere to the town.

EYE ON HAILSHAM

Enjoy Hailsham Country Park This Summer Do you enjoy the outside life? The Town Council has launched another campaign to encourage residents to visit Hailsham Country Park and enjoy the beauty of the forthcoming summer season. The Council-maintained Country Park, situated off Gleneagles Drive, covers approximately 22 acres and incorporates woodland, a recreational grass area, two ponds and a lake. A water course skirts the open field area and all-weather footpaths can be found throughout the park to encourage people of all ages to enjoy this precious open space area. “Offering a peaceful and relaxing environment and with so much to offer, the Country Park is an ideal place to get away from it all,” said Karen Giddings, Environment & Planning Officer at Hailsham Town Council. “Residents and visitors can bring their family and a picnic, do a spot of fishing at the Gleneagles lake, jog, spot wildlife, exercise their dog or encourage their children to let off steam using the open space to have a run around!” Hailsham Town Council is proud of its many improvements to the site in recent years, including the construction of a new path around Wentworth Pond and other area-specific projects such as the more recent upgraded and resurfacing of the pathway around the lake, making it more accessible for disabled users. Furthermore, the park’s high level of maintenance by Town Council works staff, together with regular monitoring of the area by two Water Bailiffs, has ensured that the site remains a safe and clean public green space for the whole community to enjoy. Town Clerk John Harrison said: “The Town Council maintains over 20 acres of public space, which includes a variety of formal parks and recreation grounds, woodland, lakes and heathland.” “With the compliments of the Town Council, I would encourage people to take a stroll around Hailsham Country Park and enjoy it during the remaining spring and upcoming summer months.”

Lakes & Ponds Fishing is currently permitted on season at two Town Council managed sites: Hailsham Country Park lake (off Gleneagles Drive) and Hempstead Pond (adjacent to Tilehurst Wood). Both fishing areas are well-stocked with fish including carp, bream, roach, rudd, tench, perch and pike. Daily fishing permits can be obtained from MFC supplies in Station Road and yearly season tickets are available from the Town Council offices (£40 adult; £25 senior citizens, disabled and children 16 years and under). If you wish to purchase a season ticket, please telephone Karen Giddings on 01323 841702.

Woodland The various woodland sites have a very good selection of tree species including birch, oak, ash, maple and wild cherry. Wildlife residing in the area includes voles, mice, lizards and weasels.

Access & Parking There are two car parks on the boundaries of the Hailsham Country Park, situated off Holyhead Close and Gleneagles Drive). Car parking is free of charge. Ample directional signage is posted throughout the park.

EYE ON ADVENTURE

Our latest ‘Experience’ review takes The Hailsham Eye team on an exclusive trip to Knockhatch Adventure Park near Hailsham and the Meerkat enclosure. We met the ‘Meerkat mob’ and were thrilled to see their new addition, a pup born a few weeks ago in February. As you can see, this youngster is an absolute cutie but there are a few more weeks to wait until the Knockhatch team can tell if it is a boy or a girl, and they are hoping for more pups soon. During our visit to the Meerkat enclosure we learned about their feeding routine. Each of them has a specific amount of food that is tailored to their needs and

keepers at the park have a sneaky way of getting all the nutrients they need into the Meercats by feeding the mealworms with foods the Meerkats don’t like to eat, such as mushrooms, broccoli and other vegetables. The Meerkats enthusiastically eat the Mealworms and gain the vitamins and minerals they need from the vegetables. Might try that at home!! There is a saying; ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ and for these animals this saying rings very true. The Meerkats take on very strong roles in raising and educating the young pups. Learning the ways of the community is a very important process. The ethos of the ‘mob’ is very straight forward and the community has a no nonsense approach to raising the young. The Hailsham Eye team was very surprised at the range of noises that are used by the Meercats to communicate and they have 30-40 different noises that mean a variety of things mostly relating to threats of danger from predators. The alarm calls used as a warning are very varied and range from from ‘Severe’ to ‘Low’ threat. This is their only protection apart from their sub terranean living quarters.

carefully weighed out by the staff. Whilst they enjoy a varied diet, the Meerkats particularly like to eat mealworms, chick legs and beetles and other insects. The 32 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

The Meerkats use a rotation system to decide who will go on ‘century duty’ or lookout to protect the group from predators. If a predator is seen, they all dive for cover until they think it’s safe, and sometimes they will send a baby out to see if it has gone. If the baby comes back then all is well, if the baby doesn’t come back then the predator has been appeased! Gulp.

Knockhatch Adventure Parkww.hookandson.co.

Meerkats can have quite a brutal but clever approach to most things, but especially reproduction. They have very strong rules about who are the lead male and female in the gang or mob. If another female becomes pregnant the lead female will eat her baby and cast out that female out of the gang. Whilst we felt this might be a little unfair we learned that this is part of the natural law and it is nature’s way ensuring the strongest blood line survives by preventing any genetic mutations. We were allowed to enter the enclosure for feeding time, Ben (the Zoo Manager) told us whilst the meerkats would be very inquisitive around us, we were not to worry as they feel very comfortable around people because of the ‘safe house’ they have. This is their safe space where only they go and therefore they never feel the need to be aggressive because of this. As our visit drew to a close we were able to watch as they all enjoyed feeding time. It was very interesting to see that the adults allowed the pup to be first to eat and it was even able to go and take food from an adult without any reaction from them.... a bit like our house!

*C OM PE TI TI O N TI M E! * The Hailsham Eye and Knockhatch Adventure Park have teamed up to celebrate the Queens Platinum Jubilee by giving you a chance to win tickets for a Meerkat Experience. You will get entry into the park for 4 people and 2 tickets for the experience (Only 2 people allowed in the enclosure). All you need to do is suggest a name for the new little pup, and it has to be Star Wars themed. Submit your entry via our Facebook competition @HailshamEyeMagazine or email your entry to competition@eyemediagroup.co.uk

There is so much more to Knockhatch than just the Meerkats, and it is a wonderful family day out. There are still many more interesting Meerkat facts that we haven’t talked about so to find out more about the adventure park and meet the mob for yourself, you can find all the information on the website www.knockhatch.com

EYE ON SUSSEX

The Hailsham Eye & Days Out Sussex are teaming up to bring you features on local attractions and restaurants that you can save money on - around Sussex. For our latest ‘Days Out in Sussex’ review, The Hailsham Eye team went for a thrill-seeking adventure and we weren’t disappointed. Branching Out Adventures, located on the Bentley Estate, Halland, East Sussex is a treetop activity centre with a range of exciting challenges for all ages and abilities. We took the youngest members of the Hailsham Eye team, a 5 and a 2 year old and were pleasantly surprised that there was something for everyone to enjoy. An all-round fun family day. We began the day strolling around the grounds of the estate taking in all the sights and sounds that this natural walk had to offer. The paths are well made and so the walking trail can be enjoyed throughout the seasons. Along the walk there are some swings and a small obstacle course for the little ones which they enjoyed. When it was time to move above the ground we 38 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

We left plenty of time between our sessions which meant we could take a rest from climbing and enjoy our picnic on one of the many tables scattered around the grounds. After lunch with energy renewed it was time to attack the high ropes. A long way off the ground, but well worth it as the view from the top was just amazing and worth the initial nerves at the start the climb.

were introduced to our harnesses. The safety talk given by Joe our instructor was very thorough, and we certainly felt safe and ready to start our adventures in the tree tops. All the rope activities have an age requirement, Mini ropes (3-5yrs), Low and High ropes (8-12yrs need an adult to supervise, 12 years and over can climb free). We began with the low ropes which is a perfect introduction. Some of the course was actually a little trickier than the higher ropes and Isabelle (5yrs) faced some fears and found it a challenge, but once the nerves had been overcome, and with renewed confidence she went on to tackle and enjoy the ropes and zipwires feeling a real sense of achievement when

Branching Out Adventures take safety very seriously and the safety procedure does mean you are connected to the wire all the time that you are on the course, so all fears disappear and what is left are beautiful sights through the tree tops, adrenalin pumping around the body and an incredible experience. The highlight of which, was the exhilarating 80m zip wire. There are other activities onsite such as the bounce about nets, climbing wall, speed zipwire and the giant swing, making a whole day out for a birthday party, team building event or just a lovely family day out. If you want to know how to get a ‘Day’s Out Sussex Card’ and get a 15% discount on activities, then head over to their website: towncitycards.com for more info.

EYE ON DESIGN

Designer, writer and television presenter, Kevin McCloud leapt into our consciousness with his vastly successful Grand Designs show on Channel 4. This month, the affable architectural business owner talks about the very first and most basic element of any project, communication. I take it as a huge compliment when I see the Grand Designs format taken to foreign shores. In particular, our Grand Designs Abroad project, which is going back well over 15 years now, saw us working with ambitious homeowners in France, Italy and Spain in undertaking ventures to make their design dreams come true. What dawned on me is the fact that anything is possible when you are able to communicate a concept… clearly, concisely, properly. In reality, that’s no more difficult to do in a foreign language than it is in English. After all, how often do we see home improvement shows here in the UK where the concept of what someone wants ends up a million miles from what they get?!

get others investing in your project. Above all else, it’s about communicating. And that communication doesn’t end when you’ve had your house extension done; it should carry on over time. When we returned to France to catch up with some of our couples, it was great to see so many of them fully integrated into their communities. Their contribution wasn’t just about adding to the local economy but learning the language and forming genuine friendships so that they could be really engaged with becoming part of that place.

It all comes down to interaction and being clear as far as what we want and what we don’t want.

After all, a home is an entity not just in the context of what’s inside it, but what’s around it as well, and that’s always worth bearing in mind.

I do believe in rural areas it’s a bit easier to harvest contacts and make a difference, but wherever you are, city or countryside, the Loire Valley or London, ultimately what makes a difference is working on and solidifying personal relations. It’s about sitting down, being firm but polite, offering incentives and trying to

People buy into people, and it’s amazing the extra lengths all of us will go to when we like, trust and believe in the people who come to us for help and support. So as I said at the start, communication is the first step… and sometimes the biggest one you’ll make, as well, so get it right!

EYE ON FARMING

News from the farm An amazing Turn Out Day! ... Steve Hook reports...

This year’s Turn Out Day was very special. It wasn’t just be the milking herd that was turned out. There were also in calf heifers and bulling heifers in with the cows. These are younger animals, equivalent to teenagers! Full of excitement being back out on grass, though the older bigger cows put these youngsters in their place! That’s the wonderful thing about small herds that have less than a hundred cows. They all know each other. They have a social structure, a hierarchy, whereas cows in big herds of hundreds of cows get lost in the huge numbers. They don’t know their role and lose their character, their identity. It’s a bit like living in a village where you know everyone, as opposed to living in a city where you know hardly anyone. Cows are the same, and it’s great to see how they interact with each other when they can run around in a lovely grass field as they did on the 18th April, with hundreds of people watching and seeing just how important being outside in a field of grass is to a cow. It wasn’t just the cows who performed though! Big Billy our thirteen year old one tonne steer isn’t quite as energetic as he was....he’s more pipe and slippers age now and doesn’t put on the show he used 42 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

to. However, this year, he was joined by Billy the Kid, a four year old Limousin cross steer who is nearly as big as Big Billy and full of youthful energy. It was fantastic seeing these two huge steers running around almost twice the size of the cows! There were also some great farmers market and around fifteen food produce stalls. Some were local, and some from London from Farmers Markets in London where we also trade every weekend, in-

uk 01323 449494 to open in June, it will hopefully become the dairy shop in London. We will be making raw ice cream on site and will bring the story of our Hailsham dairy farm into the heart of London.

Camping and Glamping This summer will see the construction of 5 glamping units down overlooking the Pevensey Levels. These will be built off grid to limit any disturbance to the area and will have uninterrupted views of the beautiful marsh land we call home for our milking herd and beef animals. Under the 28 day planning exemption rule, we will be able to have a camping area in one of our fields which would allow us to have approximately ninety pitches. There will be showers and toilets onsite with fresh produce available to purchase for your morning coffee to your meat for the bbq. This will be offered in August.

On the farm March and April have been fairly dry months, which has allowed us to get some muck spreading done on our grazing fields. A bit of warm rain is needed to really get the grass growing so that there is a decent bite for the cows to graze. We’ve got plenty of silage still which is good, as we may be able to carry some over for next winter. We had our half yearly dairy inspection carried out by the Food Standards Agency. Our previous inspector has been promoted, so this time we were visited by a new inspector. He was very impressed. The milk sample he took also passed with flying colours. In addition to the Food Standard Agency inspections, we are also inspected twice per year by an Environmental Health Officer from Wealden District Council, an inspector from the Soil Association, and sometimes Trading Standards from East Sussex County Council too! Procedures, animal husbandry, hygiene protocols, food processing and storage must all be top notch which we believe ultimately shows in our milk, butter, cream yoghurt and dairy beef!

The Hook and Son Dairy Shop Our new shop in Borough Market is progressing well. The lease is in place and the shop is designed. Aiming

Booking information will soon be available for both the camping and glamping so keep an eye out on our website.

EYE ON FOOD

Paul Hollywood’s Authentic Cornish Pasty A Cornish pasty is one of those things we almost always buy, yet in baking terms the concept is really very simple. After all, this was a home-baking staple for the tin miners of Cornwall, with its thick crust ready to be disposed of, so ensuring dirty hands wouldn’t contaminate the meat. Delicious, wholesome, and able to be added to vegetables or salad to form a main meal, the pasty really is one of my favourites.

Ingredients (serves 5) For the pastry 450g plain flour salt 115g cold lard, diced 75g cold unsalted butter, diced About 90ml ice-cold water 1 egg, lightly beaten, to glaze For the filling 1 large onion 120g swede 1 large floury potato, such as King Edward or Maris Piper 400g beef skirt 50g butter Salt and pepper to season

44 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

Method 1. To make the pastry, mix the flour and salt in a large bowl, add the lard and butter and rub in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in enough water to make a fairly firm dough, then knead briefly until smooth. Shape into a ball, wrap in cling film and chill for at least 30 minutes. 2. Now move on to the filling, slicing the onion finely to start. Cut the swede and potato into small, thin strips; keep each separate. Cut the beef into small, thin pieces and divide into five portions. 3. Heat the oven to 200°C/Gas mark 6. Divide the pastry into five equal pieces. Roll each out on a lightly floured surface to a 3mm thickness and cut out a 24cm circle, using a plate as a guide. 4. Scatter a scant layer of swede on the pastry semi-circle, leaving a

1cm border. Add a similar layer of potato, season lightly and top with some onion. Repeat the swede and potato layers, seasoning as you go. Check the pasty will close, then add the beef. Add a final layer of onion, season and dot with butter. 5. Brush the pastry border with a little beaten egg, then close the lid of the pasty, making sure that the edges meet. Press together firmly and then crimp the edges together by pinching all the way round between your thumb and forefinger. 6. Fill and seal the remaining circles of pastry in the same way. Place the pasties on two baking trays and cut two small slits in the middle of each one. Brush the pastry with beaten egg. Bake for 20 minutes, then lower the oven setting to 160°C/Gas mark 3 and bake for 30 minutes longer.

EYE ON SPORT

Mixed season of highs and lows at post-covid Hellingly Rugby Club It was never going to be an easy season. Returning from the disruption of covid, fragmented training and fragmented rugby fixtures, has required a determination and commitment never called upon before. As the season comes to a close it has been a time to reflect on those things that have gone well and those things that can be made even better next season. Off the field, the club maintained monthly Touch RugbyTournaments through the summer, attracting a number of new players to the game and re-engaging some older players who wanted to get back into social rugby. Numbers at social events, such as our Curry Evening at the Raj Doot, were a healthy testament to the club’s ethos of enjoyable, social rugby. Summer BBQs and cooked food after Tuesday Night Training sessions has built the camaraderie within the club across both senior teams. A significant uplift in new players joining the club, and possibly having beers from Gun 50 Brewery on tap, boosted membership lev50 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

els to an all time high. On the field, a new Player Leadership Team stepped up to introduce some fresh coaching ideas and playing strategies to adapt the style of play to the team’s strengths. As with all new structures, huge opportunities come with risks attached. The usual cocktail of injury, work and now covid hampered consistency of player availability. Many fixtures being supported by mixed teams, stretching players but also giving many an introduction to the physical demands of Sussex 1 rugby. As with all small social clubs, as the going got tough, the tough rose to the challenge. After a difficult year we have finished on 2 convincing wins at Cinque Ports and at home v Shoreham. The season came to a close on Saturday 16th April, with an interclub game followed by the AGM and annual awards ceremony. Touch and 7’s training will be arranged in May with all details available on the hellinglyrugby.com website.

EYE ON HISTORY

Cortlandt, George Street

Philip van Cortlandt Most people in Hailsham are aware of the building in George Street opposite the Police Station known as Cortlandt. This 240 year old house was named after Philip van Cortlandt born on 10 November 1739 in Westchester County, New York the son of Stephen and Mary Walton Van Cortlandt. He was a descendant from the rich and influential van Cortlandt family of Dutch descent who were one of the founders of New York. Philip was the eldest of their three children. He attended Kings College (now Columbia University) and graduated in 1758 with a Master of Arts degree. He returned in 1761 and was awarded an MA. He married Catherine Ogden of Jamaica, Long Island on 2 Aug 1762 in New York. Philip and Catherine went on to have at least 17 children and possibly more – up to23! Their first child, Mary was born when Catherine was aged 18 and Philip 23. Catherine was aged 44 and Philip 49 when Sophia their last child was born. Philip van Cortlandt fought in the American War of Independence on the British side. Having first refused a commission in the American army, Philip accepted the rank of Major with the 3rd and 4th battalions of the New Jersey Volunteers where he was deployed on Staten Island, New York. This led to him suffering many humiliations at the hands of the American authorities. These included his house being requisitioned on the direct orders of George Washington. The house was 52 w w w . h a i l s h a m e y e . c o . u k

then used as a hospital for up to 600 wounded patriot soldiers. Writing in Hailsham and its Environs (1982), Charles Robertson stated that Philip van Cortlandt, “displayed both strength and integrity in his decision to fight his fellow countrymen as a loyalist in the American War of Independence. The decision was to cause him great hardship and personal loss.” Regrettably for Van Cortlandt, he found himself on

EYE ON HISTORY the losing side and as a result the American authorities confiscated most of his land and property, which included a mill, a granary, farm lands and pearl ash works. His circumstances were therefore greatly reduced. Following the evacuation of New York in 1783 he had no alternative but to flee with his wife and family to England where he was placed on half pay by the British Army. However, over the next four years he made repeated requests for a pension sufficient to meet the needs of himself and his family. Eventually he was given a compensation award against some of the losses he had incurred fighting as a Loyalist on behalf of the British Crown. Having spent some time living in Chelsea and later in Chester he decided, in 1786, to sail to Nova Scotia with his wife and nine of his children in an attempt to find security and happiness. It was perilous journey and after three months at sea the ship arrived in Madeira where Catherine gave birth to a son. They arrived in Nova Scotia in late 1787. However, whilst he was a granted some land and relevant supplies and equipment, their new life was not a success and in 1794 they returned to England. With the help of others both in America and England Philip recovered some of his property in America which resulted in an improved financial situation. Philip then went on to have a brief but significant association with Hailsham. He arrived in the town on 3 August 1803 as the newly appointed barrack master for the troops stationed in Hailsham to counter any invasion by Napoleon. He was 63 at the time of his appointment. The role of barrack master for individual barracks up and down the country had been developed over the previous ten years. Their task was to oversee and maintain their barracks and to ensure the actual buildings and the soldiers were adequately supplied. This included ensuring there were such supplies as food, straw, coal, candles and furniture. Whilst there was a central ordering system under the command of Barrack Master General responsible for advertising and awarding contracts, individual barrack masters had the discretion to source supplies locally if they were cheaper than those supplied by the central command. Many local barrack masters were retired or unattached army officers on half pay. Philip van Cortlandt was one such officer. On arrival in Hailsham the family settled in the house, then known as Newhouse which

they rented from the Slye family. This property was built (1783) for John Bristow. The buildings opposite, the current police station and the buildings beyond, were not there at that time and thus Newhouse being south facing was in a superb location with views towards the Pevensey Levels. In addition to a garden with fruit trees it had eight acres of land plus stables and a coach house. It was large enough to provide accommodation for the family plus their servants. Philip van Cortlandt died on 1 May 1814, and was buried inside the Parish Church, St Mary’s. Subsequently a mural monument was erected in the Parish Church. In 1814 his widow moved to Torquay to join her daughter, Lady Gertrude Buller, wife of Vice-Admiral Sir Edward Buller. Newhouse remained in the ownership of the Slye family but was sold in 1881 to William Strickland for £1250 who renamed it Cortlandt. William Strickland died in 1918 and his wife remained in the property until her death in 1931. It was then acquired by the then Hailsham Rural District Council later Wealden District Council who used it as offices until the erection of the current offices in Vicarage Lane in the mid 1970’s.
