CULTIVATE HAPPINESS It’s no secret that marriage takes work. After all, we’re only human, and humans make mistakes, and have bad days. Nevertheless, some couples are able to foster happy, healthy, great marriages that actually do last a lifetime. A recent survey asked the happily married to reveal their secrets to success. Here’s what they had to say:

1 Be nice.

Choose kindness whenever you can — you should be AT LEAST as nice to your spouse as you would a stranger or as you were when you started dating.

2 Say “I love you” as much as possible.

3 Be honest.

Be honest about the things that make you mad, and don’t sweat the small stuff.

5 Cherish each other.

Don’t forget how important the little things are, like a hug or a compliment. Don’t take each other for granted.

6 Build a strong foundation of friendship.

You have to be friends. Your husband or wife should be someone that you’d want to hang out with. Of course, you

have to have the sexual aspect, but that’s not enough to sustain a relationship. You’re going to go through hard times and you need someone who you want to spend your time with.

7 Know that relationships are a two way street.

Be honest about what you want and need, and listen to your spouse about what they want and need.

8 Lastly, no marriage is perfect—and that’s okay.

Understand that nothing is perfect forever. There are going to be disagreements. There will be times when your partner says or does something that hurts you. People in happy relationships will talk about it and work through it. Those in bad relationships will let it stew until it becomes a bigger problem.

Poison Apple Cocktail INGREDIENTS

1/3 c. apple cider 1/3 c. cranberry juice 2 oz. fireball 1 oz. grenadine 1/4 tsp. edible gold glitter Ice

DIRECTIONS

Combine all ingredients in cocktail shaker, then fill shaker with ice. Shake until contents are mixed and shaker is cold, about 30 seconds. Pour into glass and serve.

1.In a shallow dish, rim two glasses with caramel and cinnamon sugar and set aside. 2. In a blender, combine ice cream, bourbon, vanilla, honey, and cinnamon and blend until smooth. Pour mixture into glasses and garnish with whipped cream and ground cinnamon.

3 c. apple cider 1 lemon, juiced 1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon 2 mini cinnamon-sugar doughnuts

DIRECTIONS

1. Pour cider, lemon juice, and cinnamon in a loaf pan, whisking to combine. Freeze for 1 hour. 2. Remove the cider mixture from the freezer and use a fork to scrape the slushy mixture, so it doesn’t turn into a giant ice cube. Once fully scraped and stirred, return it to the freezer for 1 hour more. 3. Remove the cider mixture from the freezer once again, using a fork to scrape and stir it into a consistency like shaved ice. If it’s not frozen enough for your taste, pop it back in the freezer for another 45 minutes. Otherwise, spoon into 2 glasses and garnish each rim with a mini doughnut.

HERE’S A TIP

To speed the healing of bruises, try eating pineapple. Drink lots of water, too. If you need to pick up small shards of glass, use a cotton ball that’s been moistened, or a slice of white bread (insides only) wadded up. Glass and chrome will shine if you clean them with newspaper. You can mist the paper with water first, but not too much. Rub ... and the shine comes right out, plus no streaks or lint!

Use purified water in your coffeemaker to lengthen its life. Water deposits build up and affect both the flavor and function of your machine. They can be cleaned, but it’s much better if you use purified drinking water from a jug. It makes it very easy to fill the machine, too. When you are frying up ground beef, add a tablespoon or two of water. It will help the excess grease to pull away from the meat, making it easier to drain off.

Have your carpets cleaned. High-traffic areas may require cleaning as often as every three or four months, but bedrooms can go as long as 18 months. An easy way to remove a bandage: Rub a little baby oil or vegetable oil over it. The oil will soak in and make it easier to remove. Tiny tears in your window screen can be secured with clear nail polish. Dab the spot, then use tweezers to line up the tiny wires, then dab again. Just make sure the window is open, or the screen might stick to the windowpane.

GET HAPPY Happiness is good for your health

1. Happiness protects your heart

Love and happiness may not actually originate in the heart, but they are good for it. Researchers have found that happiness predicts a lower heart rate and blood pressure. In the study, participants rated their happiness over 30 times in one day and then again three years later. The initially happiest participants had a lower heart rate on follow-up (about six beats slower per minute), and the happiest participants during the follow-up had better blood pressure.

3. Happiness combats stress

Stress is not only upsetting on a psychological level, but also triggers biological changes in our hormones and blood pressure. Happiness seems to temper these effects, or at least help us recover more quickly.

Before exposure, researchers called them six times in two weeks and asked how much they had experienced nine positive emotions—such as feeling energetic, pleased, and calm—that day. Apple Coffee Cake INGREDIENTS FOR THE CAKE Cooking spray 2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tsp. kosher salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 c. unsalted butter, softened 3/4 c. packed brown sugar 3/4 c. granulated sugar 2 large eggs 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

1 c. sour cream 2 medium sweet-tart apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and chopped

FOR THE STREUSEL TOPPING 12 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted and cooled slightly 1 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 3/4 c. packed brown sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon Pinch kosher salt Powdered sugar, for topping

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat oven to 350° with a rack in the middle position; lightly coat a 9”-x-13” baking pan with cooking spray. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cinnamon, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. 2. In a large bowl using a hand mixer or in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat butter and sugars together on medium speed until creamy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and beat to combine. Scrape down sides of the bowl to make sure all is evenly incorporated. Add dry ingredients and beat on low speed until just a few dry streaks remain. Add sour cream and beat until just combined. Fold in apples. Transfer batter to prepared pan and smooth top with a spatula. 3. In a medium bowl, combine melted butter, flour, sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Sprinkle crumbs over top of the batter. 4. Bake until golden and a toothpick inserted in the middle of the cake comes out clean, 50 to 60 minutes. Let cool completely. 5. Top with powdered sugar, if desired.

FORGIVE YOURSELF

I can’t believe you did that. You idiot. You can’t be trusted. You’re terrible. And I’ll never forgive you. These words can be devastating to someone who is asking for forgiveness. But when these are the words you say quietly to yourself, they can be crippling. Some of the harshest words you may ever hear are the words you say in your heart: “I’ll never forgive myself.” Forgiving yourself can be hard work, but it’s worth it. Here are some tips to consider when you can’t forgive yourself:

Decide to let it go

In the process of forgiving, the first barrier you have to remove is within your own mind. You must make the decision: I will not dwell on this incident. That decision doesn’t guarantee you’ll stop the mental video, but it draws a line in the sand that you have that goal. It’s a starting point.

Look at what you’ve done…objectively

A big obstacle to forgiving yourself is the inability to see things objectively. Perhaps, what you did was a big deal. Or maybe, it just feels like it was. Pretend it was someone else that you love who did what you did. Ask yourself how you would view them.

Own it, but don’t be owned by It

Taking responsibility for what you did is important. But one bad choice doesn’t have 26 THE GRAND SEASON • OCTOBER 2021

to define you. You can’t control how others define you, but you can control how you define yourself.

Grieve your loss

If a tragedy was averted in your situation, focus on the good of that, and be thankful. If, however, a tragic loss occurred, know it’s okay to grieve the pain. Beating yourself up constantly is not a requirement of grief.

Seek forgiveness from others

Forgiveness from others can free you up to forgive yourself. If you haven’t yet, seek forgiveness from the person you hurt.

Focus on what you can learn

Everyone fails. Everyone hurts others eventually. It’s part of the human experience and condition. But not everyone will learn from what they do. Be someone who is willing to learn from your past to benefit your future.

Record your reflections

Sometimes capturing a record of your thoughts and feelings can help you face them honestly. Do some light journaling for a few days. Focus on what you are struggling to let go of and what you would do if you could be free of the burden of guilt you feel.

Steps to Grow Your Happiness

Happiness is circular. Happy people have happy habits, which, in turn, makes them happier. Here’s a list of habits that have a high chance of giving you a happiness boost.

1. Savor the moment. Look around your

environment and take note of one thing that you often take for granted. Bring mindful attention and awareness to it. Try to engage all your senses. Notice the positive feelings and associations that go with it.

2. Connect with others. We are inherently

social and have a basic need for belonging. Having social support is a buffer in times of stress. Connecting with others can also help put problems in perspective; others can give you useful feedback.

3. Resolve conflicts proactively. Treat

emotional issues as temporary and solvable. Realize you can be kind without having people walk all over you.

4. Share gratitude and love. Express

gratitude to those who have made a difference in your life. Send a card. Write a letter. Visit in person.

5. Have fun and laugh. Laughter has been

shown to lower blood pressure, reduce certain stress hormones, defend against respiratory infections, increase memory and learning, improve alertness, and increase creativity.

6. Simplify. Too many things, too many

activities, too many choices—really too much of anything—can cause stress and decrease happiness.

7. Don’t compare. Remember that we

all have joys and sorrows. Too often we’re comparing how we feel on the inside to how someone else looks on the outside.

8. Live an authentic and meaningful life. Be true to yourself and live in line with your values. Ask yourself, What do I want in life? What small steps can I take to move in that direction? 30
