FROM THE

It’s hard to believe we’ve made it to August! I hope your summer has been filled with family, fun and friendships.

This month, The Grand Season’s focus is on the issue of family estrangement. I’ve seen a lot of social content trending about adult children going “no contact” with their parents for all kinds of reasons. If you’re one of these parents, I cannot imagine the pain you must feel. Hopefully, the tips in this issue will give you the courage to move forward.

Despite the crazy heat, I’d like to encourage you to spend a little time each day pursuing something you love, whether it be writing, crafting, cooking, exercising or coloring.

Also, if you find your home is in need of a little TLC, I hope you’ll reach out to one of our amazing advertising partners—you’ll not only receive incredible craftmanship, you’ll support the local economy.

Savor each day,

GROWTH

LEAN IN

Losing your relationship with your adult child isn’t something any parent imagines. It’s understandable to feel powerless when there’s no contact or chance to negotiate. Figuring out how to move forward isn’t straightforward. Here are some suggestions:

1. Get Support

Being cut off by your child, with no way to understand or resolve things, is hard. That’s why staying connected to others who love and understand you is so important. In addition to friends and family, consider joining a support group.

2. Don’t Cut Off in Response

You’re not the one ending the relationship—your child is. Don’t respond by cutting them off. Continue reaching out to express love and your wish to repair things. Send birthday or holiday messages, and brief notes or emails. Share warmth and compassion as you live your life.

3. Don’t Feed the Anger

Anger is natural, but not helpful. Step back and try to understand the estrangement. What patterns played out in your family? Viewing things more factually can make it feel less personal.

4. Listen to Your Child Without Defending Yourself

If your child opens up, listen with an open heart. Hear their perceptions, even if you disagree. Look for truths, and be willing to reflect on yourself. Criticism is hard, especially if your intentions were misunderstood. Your child may hold on to blame to manage anxiety. Simply hearing them can mean a lot.

5. Focus on Yourself, Not Your Child

If communication returns, you’ll be better able to learn from the past and build a healthier relationship. Focus on your growth, not changing your child. Let go of resentment. Understand their need for distance—and forgive.

AAA SENIOR PLACEMENT AZ

A Message from Sue Royer

“I was born and raised in inner city Chicago, the sixth of eighteen children with fifteen brothers. Being the oldest daughter, I was always a caregiver which I believe influenced me to pursue work in the healthcare industry. Today, I have three daughters and five grandchildren.

Years ago, I volunteered for hospice and knew immediately that helping seniors was my calling. I was soon employed by hospice but I felt something was missing. I realized it was the limited time I was able to spend with my clients. Having my own business allows me to provide the intimate hands on service needed in our community. I am committed to our seniors throughout their lives and I thank the community for the opportunity to serve.”

He’s also in Netflix’s “UNBAOM” (about Unabomber Ted Kaczynski), “Bear Country” with Aaron Paul and Luke Evans, and the sports drama “The Beast in Me” with Luke Hemsworth.

Meanwhile, Cavill’s upcoming in Guy Ritchie’s “In the Grey” with Jake Gyllenhaal, “Voltron” with Sterling K. Brown, and “Enola Holmes 3” with Millie Bobby Brown. The former “Man of Steel” had a child in January with his girlfriend, Natalie Viscuso, but they’re mum on the child’s name and gender.

DINING GUIDE

Dill planted near tomatoes will draw caterpillars away from the fruits. And it’s delicious.

Potato salad will have more flavor if you whisk together all the dressing ingredients and add it to the potatoes when they are warm. The potatoes absorb the ingredients better and the flavor will develop even more during refrigeration.

Here’s a great recipe for an icy treat. Freeze orange juice or apple juice in ice trays. Throw a handful in the blender for a fruit slush that can’t be beat on a hot day.

Rubbing alcohol can be used to remove ball point pen from most upholstery.

Locally-owned businesses create more jobs locally and often provide better wages and benefits.

There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power. They speak more eloquently than ten thousand tongues. They are the messengers of overwhelming grief, of deep contrition, and of unspeakable love.

Washington Irving

Grief can be the garden of compassion. If you keep your heart open through everything, your pain can become your greatest ally in your life’s search for love and wisdom.
