The holidays are a reminder to take inventory of all the blessings we have in our lives. Making gratitude a habit can have positive benefits to your own happiness, as well as those around you, by creating stronger bonds in your relationships, finding kindness in others and carving new “good mood grooves” into your brain. Is it time to buy the turkey? In 1939, it would have been difficult to plan your Thanksgiving dinner for 12.

Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. But that was not always the case. When Abraham Lincoln was president in 1863, he proclaimed the last Thursday of November to be our national Thanksgiving Day. In 1865, Thanksgiving was celebrated the first Thursday of November, because of a proclamation by President Andrew Johnson, and in 1869, President Ulysses S. Grant chose the third Thursday for Thanksgiving Day. In all other years, until 1939, Thanksgiving was celebrated as Lincoln had designated, the last Thursday in November.

Then, in 1939, responding to pressure from the National Retail Dry Goods Association to extend the Christmas shopping season, President Franklin D. Roosevelt moved the holiday back a week, to the next-to-last Thursday of the month. The association had made a similar request in 1933, but at that time, Roosevelt thought the change might cause too much confusion. As it turns out, waiting to make the change in 1939 didn’t avoid any confusion.

At the time, the president’s 1939 proclamation only directly applied to the District of Columbia and federal employees. While governors usually followed the president’s lead with state proclamations for the same day, on this year, 23 of the 48 states observed Thanksgiving Day on November 23, 23 states celebrated on November 30, and Texas and Colorado declared both Thursdays to be holidays. Football coaches scrambled to reschedule games set for November 30, families didn’t know when to have their holiday meals, calendars were inaccurate in half of the country, and people weren’t sure when to start their Christmas shopping.

After two years of confusion and complaint, President Roosevelt signed legislation establishing Thanksgiving Day as the fourth Thursday in November. Roosevelt, recognizing the problems caused by his 1939 decree, had announced a plan to return to the traditional Thanksgiving date in 1942. But Congress introduced the legislation to ensure that future presidential proclamations could not affect the scheduling of the holiday. Their plan to designate the fourth Thursday of the month allowed Thanksgiving Day to fall on the last Thursday in five out of seven years.

Peanut Butter Dessert Lasagna INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 c. heavy cream 1/2 c. powdered sugar 1 (3.4-oz.) package vanilla instant pudding mix, plus ingredients called for on box 1 (16-oz.) package Nutter Butters 1 (16.3-oz.) jar peanut butter, melted 3 King Size Butterfingers, roughly chopped 1/2 c. semisweet chocolate chips, melted DIRECTIONS Make whipped cream: Using a stand mixer with the whisk attachment or hand beaters, beat cream and sugar until medium peaks form, about 3 minutes.

Set aside. Prepare pudding according to package directions.

In an 8”-x-8” baking dish, spread a thin layer of whipped cream. Top with a layer of Nutter Butters and top those with a layer of melted peanut butter, spreading to completely cover cookies. Top with half the vanilla pudding, spreading into an even layer, then half the remaining whipped cream in an even layer; top with half the crushed Butterfingers and drizzle with more melted peanut butter. Repeat layering with remaining Nutter Butters, pudding, whipped cream, and crushed Butterfingers.

Cover loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate until cookies are soft, (6 hours and up to overnight). Drizzle with remaining melted peanut butter and melted chocolate, then slice and serve.

3-1/2 cups apple cider or juice 3 cups apricot nectar 1 cup peach nectar or additional apricot nectar 1/4 cup water 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 cinnamon sticks (3 inches) 1 teaspoon finely chopped fresh gingerroot 1 teaspoon grated orange zest 8 whole cloves Orange slices and lemon peel strips, optional

9 cups water 2 cups sugar 1 can (12 ounces) frozen cranberry juice concentrate, partially thawed 1 can (12 ounces) frozen orange juice concentrate, partially thawed 3/4 cup thawed lemonade concentrate 2 cups vodka 8 cups lemon-lime soda, chilled

DIRECTIONS

In a 3- or 4-qt. slow cooker, combine first seven ingredients. Place cinnamon sticks, ginger, orange zest and cloves on a double thickness of cheesecloth. Gather corners of cloth to enclose seasonings; tie securely with string. Add to slow cooker. Cook, covered, on low until flavors are blended, 3-4 hours. Discard spice bag. Serve warm. If desired, garnish with orange slices and lemon peel.

DIRECTIONS

In a 5-qt. bowl, mix water and sugar until sugar is dissolved. Stir in juice concentrates and vodka until blended. Transfer to freezer containers, allowing headspace for expansion; freeze overnight.To serve, place 2/3 cup slush in each glass. Add 1/3 cup soda.

DIRECTIONS

In a small saucepan, bring 1 cup cider, 1 cup caramel topping, cinnamon sticks and cinnamon to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer until liquid is reduced to 1 cup, about 15 minutes.

Cool slightly; discard cinnamon sticks.

Place sprinkles and additional caramel topping in separate shallow bowls. Hold each glass upside down and dip rim in caramel topping, then dip in sprinkles. tTo serve, fill glasses with ice. Add 2 tablespoons cooled cinnamon syrup to each; top with remaining cider and champagne. If desired, garnish with apple slices and additional cinnamon sticks.

SOCIAL SECURITY INCREASE IN 2021

The news is out. Our Social Security benefit increase starting in January 2021 will be less than it was for 2020.

Instead of the 1.6% increase we received this year, they’re cutting us back to 1.3% for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income. For the average recipient, this comes to a whopping $20 per month.

The average benefit will be $1,543 per month and $2,596 for a couple.

The retirement earnings test exempt amount will change in 2021 as well. If you’re not yet at full retirement age, the annual exempt amount will be $18,960 per year.

During the first year you reach full retirement age, the limit will be $50,520 per year (before the month you reach that age).

The way this is supposed to work is that when the annual inflation rate goes down, our cost of living adjustment also goes down. We allegedly don’t need as much money to get through the month. (Although the cost of our groceries has gone up, the price of gas has gone down because no one is going anywhere now.) The Senior Citizens League guesstimated correctly a few months ago that our increase would be 1.3% — the second lowest increase ever.

Meanwhile, our Medicare Part B premium continues to climb. The good news there is the “hold harmless” clause in the regulations. If the Medicare premium rises enough that it overtakes our Social Security increase, the dollar amount of the Part B premium will be reduced so we don’t end up with fewer Social Security dollars than we received this year. This applies to most, but not all of us.

Keep an eye on the Senior Citizens League (www. seniorsleague.org). They fight for us when it comes to drug costs, veterans benefits, Medicare, Social Security and more. They’re in Alexandria, Virginia, right across the river from Washington, D.C., and the halls of Congress.
