REDUCE THE HEAT Make life a little cooler Feeling a little hot under the collar lately? You’re not the only one! Summer in Arizona is guaranteed to be sweltering hot. Even though we know what to expect, try some of these great ideas when you can’t take the heat anymore.

Reduce your body temperature

Place bottles in a container big enough to hold a number of bottles and enough ice to surround it with little room to spare. Pack ice and a cup or two of salt (rock or table salt) around the bottles and then fill the container with water.

Salt triggers a chemical reaction that lowers the temperature of the water, so drinks chill in 10-15 minutes.

Refresh sticky sheets

On those unbearably hot nights, place your pillow case and top sheet in the freezer for a few minutes before bedtime.

You can also fill a hot water bottle with water and freeze it. Place it at the foot of the bed to cool your sleeping area down by several degrees instantly.

Make a cooling body spray

If you are spending an extended period of time outdoors in the summer heat, be sure to carry along some liquid

Make an “Ice Box Fan”

This stay-cool trick is straight out of the icebox era! Make a DIY air conditioner by positioning a shallow pan or bowl full of ice in front of a fan. The breeze will pick up cold water from the ice’s surface as it melts, creating a cooling mist.

DIY Cooling Pad

For a cold compress on really hot nights, fill a sock with rice, tie it off, and stick it in the freezer for an hour or so. The compress will stay chilly for up to 30 minutes, definitely enough time to nod off.

July 12, 1979 Disco music died at Chicago’s Comiskey Park when a “Disco Demolition” night is held. Organizers grossly underestimated the number of fans who would want to blow up their disco records: a sellout crowd inside the stadium and 40,000 outside who stormed the field and lit bonfires on the diamond.

July 14, 1881 Sheriff Pat Garrett kills Henry McCarty, better known as Billy the Kid. Garrett had

CARRY ON It’s possible to relax your mind

Are you overwhelmed by worries? Do you feel you need to rest, but can’t manage to find a way to do it? Do anxious thoughts invade your mind and you can’t focus on what’s really important? If you want to learn to relax your mind, you first need to trust that it is possible to relax your mind.

Your restless mind won’t stop just because you want it to. It’s more about willpower and practice. Try some of these ideas to find your calm.

Exercising goes hand in hand with relaxation techniques.

A sedentary lifestyle makes it difficult for you to sleep and diminishes your self-esteem. Swimming or walking can clear your mind and keep you in good shape.

Stop multitasking

Stop and think for a moment how many things are you doing at once? Are you reading this article while doing something else? It is difficult to concentrate on a single issue when you feel pressured to respond to an immensity of stimuli at the same time. Try making a list of the things you need to do and prioritize with numbers, so you will know where to start.

Tidy your space

Keeping calm in chaotic, noisy and suffocating places is extraordinarily difficult. On the other hand, by having a small “sanctuary” that allows you to feel at ease and avoid unnecessary distractions, you will achieve mind relaxation easily.

Silence your cell phone

Nomophobia or the anxiety you feel when you are without your smartphone is becoming more and more common. It’s hard to separate from your cell phone when you’re expecting an important call. However, if you really want to relax, you need to be away from your phone.

Listen to soothing music

Select a playlist that conveys peace, and keep in mind it’s not enough to just put songs in the background while you’re doing other things.

Watermelon-Tequila Cocktail

INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup water 1/4 cup granulated sugar 8 cups (1 lb.) diced seedless watermelon 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 3 calamansi limes, juice only, optional 1/2 cup lightly packed fresh mint leaves, plus 8 sprigs for garnish 1 1/4 cups silver tequila ice DIRECTIONS In a small saucepan, bring the water and sugar to a simmer. Stir until the sugar is dissolved, about 1 minute; let the sugar syrup cool.

In a blender, puree the watermelon until smooth. Strain the watermelon juice, pressing gently on the pulps to extract as much juice as possible. Discard the pulp.In a pitcher, combine the sugar syrup with the lime juice, calamansi juice and mint leaves. Using a wooden spoon, lightly muddle the mint. Add the watermelon juice and tequila. Add ice to the cocktail and garnish with the mint sprigs and serve cold.

Triple-Layer Piña Coladas

INGREDIENTS 3 oz. rum 1 1/2 c. pineapple 3 tsp. agave syrup 3 tbsp. coconut cream 3 oz. lime juice 1 c. ice 12 strawberries, chopped 2 small peach, chopped Strawberries, for garnish DIRECTIONS Fill blender with 1/3 of the rum, pineapple, agave nectar, coconut cream, lime juice, and ice. Set aside. Repeat two more times, first adding strawberry, and then peach.

Blend mixture and pour into serving glass in layers starting with base mix, then strawberry mix, and lastly peach. Make sure to chill each layer before adding the next.

ADOPTING A 3-LEGGED PET How do you handle exercise?

Q: I have an opportunity to adopt a wonderful 3-legged, overweight, 4-year-old Shepherd. I’m happy to help him lose the weight, as I already walk 2 to 4 miles almost every day. I’m not sure, however, if he can walk those distances. Can he be trained to walk with me that far? Do you think he would be able to swim for exercise?

A: I’ve met so many animals that, despite a challenge such as a missing limb or paralysis, are still energetic and participate in every facet of life that they can.

Your potential new family member may be able to train up to walking a couple of miles, eventually. He’s young enough, and Shepherds are certainly energetic enough. His extra weight will make it difficult to manage on three legs. You can best control his weight through a diet prescribed by a veterinarian, rather than relying on exercise alone. Swimming, if he is comfortable doing it, can be a great option to keep him exercising while putting much less stress on his joints. Introduce him to this activity gradually.

If you have been out in the sun, and accidently overlooked a portion of your skin while applying sunscreen, try some of these suggestions to reduce the pain.

1. Place a cool compress on sunburned skin for immediate sunburn pain relief to comfort and soothe sunburn.

2. Take a cool shower to cool your sunburned skin.

3. Take a cool bath and try these therapies to soothe sunburn pain: • Add one cup of apple cider vinegar to a bath to help balance the pH (acid or alkalinity) of sunburned skin.

• Soak in an oatmeal bath. This is especially helpful for itchy, sunburned skin.

• Add some lavender or chamomile essential oil to the bath to help relieve some of the stinging and pain.

• Add 2 cups of baking soda to the bath to help ease irritation and redness from sunburn.

4. Use lotions that contain Aloe Vera to soothe and moisturize sunburnt skin.

Some aloe products contain lidocaine, an anesthetic that can help relieve sunburn pain.

5. Apply teabags soaked in cold water to sunburned eyelids to soothe the burn and reduce inflammation.

6. Apply petroleum jelly or Aquaphor ointment on sunburned lips to keep them moisturized.
