SET YOUR LIMITS

Boundaries are essential to a healthy life. Setting and sustaining boundaries is a skill—a skill that many of us don’t learn. It’s possible to pick up pointers here and there from experience or through watching others set boundaries. But for many of us, boundary-building is a relatively new and challenging concept.

Having healthy boundaries means “knowing and understanding” what your limits are. Below, are some insights into building better boundaries.

1. Name your limits.

You can’t set good boundaries if you’re unsure of where you stand. So, identify your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual limits. Consider what you can tolerate and accept and what makes you feel uncomfortable—those feelings help you identify what your limits are.

2. Be direct.

With some people, maintaining healthy boundaries doesn’t require a direct and clear-cut dialogue.

Usually, this is the case if people are similar in their communication styles, views, personalities and general approach to life. With others, such as those who have a different personality or cultural background, you’ll need to be more direct about your boundaries.

3. Practice self-awareness.

Again, boundaries are all about listening to your feelings and honoring them. If you notice yourself slipping and not sustaining your boundaries, ask yourself: “What’s changed?” or “What is the situation creating that’s making me resentful or stressed?”

4. Be assertive.

Of course, you know that it’s not enough to create boundaries; you actually have to follow through.

5. Start small.

Like any new skill, communicating your boundaries takes practice. Start with a small boundary that isn’t threatening to you, and then incrementally increase to more challenging boundaries.

As a couple, establishing boundaries is imperative to protecting the integrity of your marriage. It is vital that you are on the same page when it comes to what’s acceptable behavior for your relationship. While all relationships are different, listed below are several boundaries that should be non-negotiable in every healthy marriage.

1. Ignoring your spouse

This probably seems obvious, but tragically, this happens all-too-often in marriage. Some spouses do this to punish their spouse when they don’t get their way. CAUGHT NOT TAUGHT Teaching kids about healthy boundaries

Setting healthy personal boundaries and recognizing others’ as well, is paramount for building strong relationships on a foundation of respect. But, maintaining boundaries can be complicated. And if you’re not used to examining your own, it can feel uncomfortable to begin to do so as an adult.

That’s why it’s so important to teach your children about healthy boundaries from a young age. The earlier they learn about their own limits, and see the importance of respecting other’s, the easier it will be for them to navigate healthy relationships as adults.

Here are some ideas on how to teach your children healthy boundaries:

Set a good example Like with many other lessons passed from parents to children, teaching children about healthy boundaries is easier when parents can do so by example. Take stock of your own personal boundaries and do an honest assessment.

Start by asking yourself the following questions. Are you managing your boundaries consistently? Are the boundaries that you set healthy, rigid, or porous? When you have to enforce your boundaries with your children, do you have a

discussion with them about why you are doing so?

Healthy boundaries often require us to be confident in our own opinions, desires and needs. In order to build that confidence, children need to learn how to identify what they need, where their limits are, and the types of interactions they like.

Practice early and often with your child. Run through different scenarios—saying “No” to a family member asking for a hug, for example, will sound different than saying “No” to a friend’s peer pressure—and emphasize that a simple “No” is sometimes more than sufficient.

While practicing how to say “No”, follow-up with discussions about how to react when on the receiving end of one. Understanding the situation from its opposite viewpoint can give your child some much-needed insight. They will learn that another person’s “No” deserves to be respected and that, in turn, can give them confidence in the validity of their own “No.” Healthy personal boundaries are essential for healthy relationships, and parents should begin teaching their children about them from a young age.

Cheesy Baked Brussels Sprout-Artichoke Dip

Enjoy the flavors of football at home.

INGREDIENTS 12 slices bacon, cut into 1” squares 1/4 c. lime juice 2 tbsp. sriracha 1 tbsp. brown sugar Ranch, for dipping DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 375° and line a medium cooking sheet with parchment paper. Lay bacon pieces in a single layer on the baking sheet. In a small bowl, combine Sriracha, lime juice and sugar in a bowl and whisk to combine. Brush onto bacon pieces. Place in the oven and bake until bacon is crisp, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool slightly, then serve with ranch dressing on the side, for dipping.

Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeño Poppers

INGREDIENTS 1 (8-oz.) block cream cheese, softened 1 1/2 c. shredded Pepper Jack 1 clove garlic, minced Kosher salt Freshly cracked black pepper 12 jalapeños 12 slices bacon, halved DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 400°. In a large bowl, combine cream cheese, Pepper Jack, and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Halve jalapeños lengthwise, then use a spoon to remove seeds and veins.

Fill with cheese mixture and wrap each with a halved slice of bacon.

Place on a baking sheet and bake until bacon is crispy and peppers are tender, about 25 minutes.

INGREDIENTS 8 oz. cream cheese 1/2 c. mayonnaise 1 c. freshly grated Parmesan, divided 1/2 c. shredded Gruyere 2 c. artichoke hearts packed in water, chopped 2 c. Brussels sprouts, blanched and chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper Pita chips or baguette, for serving DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, mix together cream cheese, mayonnaise, half the Parmesan, Gruyere, artichokes, Brussels sprouts, and garlic, then season generously with salt and pepper.

Transfer mixture to cast-iron skillet or baking dish and sprinkle with remaining Parmesan. Bake until mixture is warmed through and browned and bubbly on top, 18 to 20 minutes. Serve hot with pita chips or baguette slices.
