SPEAK EASY Even the happiest couples need help communicating. When life gets busy and you feel stressed, you often lose sight of the person that you are married to. Though you love each other, sometimes you forget to talk. You may be mentally drained or just need some alone time, and it’s so easy to take each other for granted in those moments.

Talking to each other shouldn’t be a chore. It can be fun, it can be enjoyable, and you can get back to a time where the conversation was easy and seamless. Here are some communication tips that can help you coonnect again.

Build your communication skills

1. Respect on another.

This sounds like it should be a given, but far too many of us lose respect for one another along the way. It may be due to a significant reason, or just because you take each other for granted.

If you can make each other’s needs a priority, communication will be easier when you prioritize one another.

2. Send a love note.

How much does it make you smile when you get a love note from your spouse? Even if it’s been awhile, send a text to say you’re thinking about them. Leave them a love note in the morning out of nowhere, and for no particular reason at all.

3. Say “I love you” every day.

One of the most helpful tips is to tell each other you love one another more often. Take the time to look your spouse in the eye and say, “I love you.”

4. Talk about things that make you both happy.

If you love talking about current events or political views, then do it.

If it makes you both happy to talk about your jobs or the industry or the stock market, then go for it. There is no right or wrong here, just find some sort of common ground to ignite the conversations.

Communicate with your kids effectively.

No matter how often your leadership skills are tested at work, you may feel as if your ability to communicate with your children is not up to par.

Even though you may not feel equipped, developing effective communication with your children is possible. These tips may help you get started:

Mind your facial gestures.

While verbal communication is incredibly important as it conveys a message to children, watching your facial gestures and making sure that they reflect what you really mean is one of the keys to effective communication with children.

Create routines that encourage interaction.

Children need structure in their lives. Make sure the routines you create for your kids encourages interaction and communication.

This not only provides them with the opportunity to practice their speaking and listening skills, but it also affords you some time to understand what is happening in their lives.

Ask questions and demand less.

There is no denying that many of us become bossy with our kids, and this is no way to bolster effective communication with children. In fact, it can cause them to become resentful and stop communicating with us altogether. Instead, ask open-ended questions when something needs to be done, so they can participate in the conversation.

Be a role model

When it comes to communication, your children will learn most of their skills from you in their first few years of life. If you are always grunting demands, yelling, sighing, avoiding difficult subjects or failing to look your child in the eye when you speak to them, they will pick up on these habits.

Say “I’m Sorry.”

Saying “I’m sorry,” is a difficult for many people, even when they do feel remorseful. If you find yourself upset over something, and you snap at your child over an innocent question, always take the time to say you’re sorry. Remember, it is never too late to change our habits and begin encouraging good communication skills not only for our kids, but also for ourselves.

If you’re reattaching a button to shorts or pants, try using dental floss, the unwaxed kind. It’s much stronger, and can hold the button better than regular thread. Use a marker to darken it if the color is an issue.

Trying to spot roof damage but not quite sure you’re ready for a trip up the ladder? Before you get up on the roof, get out your binoculars. You’d be surprised how much you can see from the ground, and you can do a cursory examination and then decide if anything needs a closer look.

Upcycle an unused bread box as a charging station. Simply mount a power strip in the back of the box on the inside, and you can put phones and other small devices directly inside to charge. Run a cord through the side so that larger tablets can sit on top of the box to charge.

Use lip balm to help a tootight ring slide off of a finger.

Using cold water for laundering protects colors and uses less energy.

Store brooms either handle down or on a hook that allows the bristles to suspend over the floor. When brooms rest their bristles on the floor, it bends them and breaks the ends. Broken ends make it hard for the broom to work efficiently. www.grandseasonfamily.com
