NOTE

I love the month of July! In fact, 4th of July is one of my favorite holiday’s. It’s hard to believe it’s already come and gone. I hope you had a great time celebrating the independence of our great nation.

Don’t forget to savor each moment you have with your family, because somehow the busyness of life will return—and you’ll miss the time you’ve had together during this season of life.

Recently, I read this Wade Boggs quote, “A positive attitude can cause a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results.” These words have kept me encouraged as our world continues to change.

As we continue to practice social distancing, please support local businesses as you take care of the many things around your home that need attention.

The theme for this month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is cultivating a positive attitude.

Rather than reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic through a negative lens, I’d like you to think about what positive things have resulted from adjusting to your “new normal.”

I know for my boys and I, we have spent a lot more time together. We’ve also taken some amazing road trips and had the opportunity to have some great conversations.

ATTITUDE AJUSTMENT Find the positive in every situation

Life right now isn’t how anyone planned for it. Plans have been cancelled, family has be distant, and in reality, all you want to do is getaway. While a better day is on the horizon—you can make today better by transforming your attitude. Here are some ideas to help you:

Quit being a victim. It is easier to assume the role of a victim during tough times than taking responsibilities for yourself. But doing so will only prolong your suffering, and put off people who may be able to help you out. Letting go of the victim label also frees you from resentment and bitterness, which will only jam up the creative energies you need to get out of the mess.

Focus on the positives. No matter how dire a situation may be, there are always some positives you can find in it. It is our unwillingness to look at them that blind us to the brighter sides. Think of ten positive things that will happen from this pandemic.

Give thanks. Having listed the positives you can think of, give thanks for the current situation as well as the things that you already have. For one, things could be a lot worse! It won’t be easy to be thankful in the face of harsh challenges, but focusing on what you do have, instead of what you have lost, will put you in a better position to solve problems on hand than being in a self-pity and sorrowful state.

Get enough sleep. During stressful times, we’re likely to skimp on sleep, either voluntarily or not. But in reality, you will need more quality sleep during stressful times than ever, so that you can remain energetic, clear-headed and focused to figure out your next steps.

Limit bad news intake. Being constantly fed with gloomy news is enough to make even a dog panic for no reason. Hearing bad news once is enough, not ten times of the same news in different versions from every gadget that you own.

Join forces with others. When bad things happen, it is easy to become close-minded. But the reality is, you are not alone during difficult times. There are many people who feel the same way as you do, even though they may not voice it out loud.

Get close to nature. Researchers found that spending time in your favorite outdoor area is more relaxing and restorative than time spent in your favorite urban settings or city parks. Taking a mindful walk outdoors is also a great way to clear the mind and regain mental balance.

We can all agree healthy relationships require a lot of effort. But sometimes, all you really need to do is relax and have fun. It’s time to take a step back, and take time to play with your partner. Here are some ideas to get you started: Play Lover’s Olympics — no money needed, just some creativity. Don’t forget a special prize for the winner.

Some ideas are:

• Shot for Shot – paper and a trash can

• Race – from one point to another

• Timed Task – who can complete a task the fastest

Pillow Fight. Enough said – so much fun and great stress relief.

Stop saying “no” and start saying “yes” to your partner’s wishes for one evening. Remember to take turns, perhaps go ride bikes and race to see who wins.

Feed one another – chocolate, ice cream, or any yummy treat your partner loves. For extra surprise and fun… blindfold the receiver.

Get reacquainted – ask each other interesting questions that will enhance and deepen your connection and understanding of one another and that facilitate conversation. Such as:

• If you could never speak again, how would you express your love to me?

• What was your first thought when we met?

• What was your favorite part of your childhood?

• What is one value you learned growing up that you bring into our relationship today?

• If we only had one more day together, how would we spend it?

Power Outage – pretend for one night there is a power outage in your home!

No electronics, no stove, no microwave, what would you do?

Have an “Attitude of Gratitude” – write down 25 or more things you appreciate about your beloved, take turns sharing with one another what you wrote.

Go on a trust walk – one person leads the other while blindfolded and then switch. Talk about the experience, how well did you trust this person? Was this an easy task or hard task, why?

Have a surprise day for no reason. Surprise your beloved with something, as if it were a special occasion.

Cook a meal together – select the meal, shop for the ingredients, and divvy out the tasks. Cook, eat, and make sure you clean up together.

Game Night – pull out a board game, bring on the appetizers and enjoy.

Make sure there is a prize for the winner.

Roll the dice – grab 2 dice, for 1 of the die assign tasks such as 1 = hug, 2 = kiss, 3 = foot massage, so on and so forth. For the other die this would be for the amount of times or minutes. For example, roll the pair of dice. On 1 die you roll a 3 and the other die rolled 6.

This would be a 6-minute foot massage.

Take a walk or a stroll hand in hand if you feel like it, break out into a skip or hop like a kangaroo, just get your silly on!

Either create a bucket list or get out your bucket list, go down the list and start planning to make one of those items a reality.

Pick an activity you used to do when you were dating and go recreate the moment.

Ideas to help teens manage social distancing • For juniors, suggest they check out virtual tours of colleges, and visit Kahn Academy for some SAT prep.

• Let them pick where to order take-out from.

• Remind them how much they used to enjoy playing an instrument, then put out that guitar, ukulele, flute, or book of piano music.

• Put out a set of oil or watercolor paints, and text them a link to a free online painting lesson.

• Loan them a good camera and suggest they go outside and do some nature photography.

• Suggest they use YouTube to learn a new hobby.

• Have them pick out a comedian they like, or suggest one, and watch a stand-up act.

• Invite them on a hike or a walk, or encourage them to meet friends for one (at a safe distance.)

• Ask them to learn a new way to braid hair, with a sibling, or with you as the guinea pig.

• Teach them how to cook a favorite meal. If lacking inspiration, follow a chef online.

• Ask them to bake something with you, or on their own, if they would prefer.

• Suggest a series to binge-watch together, or ask them to pick one.

• Find a really interesting documentary and invite them to join you.

• Ask them if they’d like help organizing, cleaning out, or rearranging their bedroom.

INGREDIENTS 1 c. fresh lemon juice 1/2 c. pure maple syrup 1 1/2 strawberries, hulled and halved 1 c. sparkling water 1 c. blueberries (optional) DIRECTIONS Combine lemon juice, maple syrup, 3/4 pound strawberries, and 2 cups water in a blender. INGREDIENTS 1/2 c. water 1/2 c. granulated sugar 2 jalapeños, halved 1/4 c. chopped strawberries 8 fresh mint leaves, plus more for garnish 2 oz. bourbon Ice 1 (12-oz.) can seltzer Strawberry, for garnish Red jalapeño, sliced, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine water, sugar, and jalapeños.

Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Discard jalapeños. In a cocktail glass, muddle strawberries and mint. Add bourbon and 1 tablespoon simple syrup, then fill with ice and top off with seltzer.

Garnish with mint, a strawberry, and red jalapeño slices.

Spicy Grapefruit Sidecar INGREDIENTS Grapefruit wedge, for rimming 2 tsp. granulated sugar 2 tsp. chili powder Ice 2 oz. cognac 2 oz. grapefruit juice 1 oz. Cointreau Grapefruit slice, for garnish

DIRECTIONS Rim glass with a grapefruit wedge.

Combine sugar and chili powder on a small plate and dip rim into mixture, turning to coat. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add cognac, Cointreau, and grapefruit juice. Shake until chilled.

Strain into rimmed glass and garnish with a grapefruit slice.

Spin a Story from the Past Think of this as “who can lie better?”

Essentially, one player begins by telling a story about their past (could be dating stories, but you know, proceed with caution), and the other person has to say whether they are telling the truth or spinning

Riff Off While the traditional license plate game involves finding a plate from each of the 50 states (yawn), this game involves finding a license plate with random letters and

creating a word with those letters— think of it like Road Trip Scrabble.

(So if the license plates is YMT23, you could say Yosemite.) Instead of taking turns, just yell when you see one and can come up with a word.

The other person can challenge you by coming up with a longer word that features those letters. Two extra points for those who spot a vanity plate out in the wild. First one to 10, wins.

Explain a Movie Plot Badly This one’s a game that others play outside of road trips, but it also works when you’re trapped in a car. It goes something like this: One of you thinks of a movie and then explains the plot in a way that is both factual, but also terrible.

(Need some inspiration? Look at #ExplainaFilmPlotBadly.) Then, the other person has to guess. If they guess correctly, they get a point. If they don’t, you get a point.

Radio Roulette This is essentially a game of Name That Tune. It’s easy—flip to a station (best to do with presets, though advanced points for truly just seeking the next station), and let it play for 15 seconds. The other person has to name the artist and name of the song. One point for each. Bonus point round—name the album. First one to pass 15 wins.

INGREDIENTS 1/2 c. strawberries, sliced 1/2 c. blueberries 1/2 c. raspberries 1 bottle Prosecco Pink lemonade DIRECTIONS Divide fruit between two popsicle molds. Fill each popsicle mold three-quarters full with Prosecco.

Fill molds to top with lemonade of your choice and insert popsicle sticks. Freeze for 6 hours, or until frozen. Before serving, run the molds under warm water to loosen the popsicles.

PICKLE POPS

INGREDIENTS 2 1/4 c. pickle juice 1 tbsp. granulated sugar 1/2 c. pickle chips DIRECTIONS In a large liquid measuring cup, whisk together pickle juice and sugar. Place a few pickle chips in each popsicle mold then pour in pickle juice mixture.

Cover and add popsicle sticks. Freeze until solid, 4 hours. Run warm water over molds to loosen popsicles and serve immediately.

LOVE

INGREDIENTS 1 box instant vanilla pudding 1 1/3 c. cold milk 1 can sweetened condensed milk 3 large bananas, thinly sliced 2 c. crushed Nilla wafers DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, combine vanilla pudding mix, milk and sweetened condensed milk and whisk until smooth. Stir occasionally until the pudding has thickened, about 5 minutes. Place a banana slice into the bottom of each Dixie cup. Top with a big spoonful of pudding mixture. Place a couple more banana slices on top then sprinkle crushed Nilla wafers on top. Top with more pudding to fill the cup completely, then sprinkle with more wafers. Freeze until solid, at least 5 hours and up to overnight.
