Happy 2020! I hope you and yours had a magical holiday season and are off to a productive new year. I’ll be honest, I’m having a hard time believing 2019 is over! The year seemed to fly by at a record pace. As I reflect on 2019, it was one of my favorite years! My family celebrated many milestones and accomplished several personal goals we’ve been working towards for years.

This quote from e.e. cummings has resonated with me as I’ve prepared this issue of The Grand Season Family: Once we believe in ourselves, we can risk curiosity, wonder, spontaneous delight, or any experience that reveals the human experience.

This month’s issue of The Grand Season Family is about Fresh Starts. The new year is full of so much potential and opportunity, the question is: What are you going to do to make this year different?

Do you believe in yourself enough to risk curiosity?

Wonder? Or, spontaneous delight? This quote makes me want to pack my self-doubt and discard it, so I can experience life in unexpected ways.

This time of year, it’s natural to focus inward, thinking about healthy new habits, self-improvement and professional advancement. Consider channeling part of that fired-up New Year’s spirit into your bond with your partner, too, resolving to not just spend more time together—but to do it all better, with these easy tips for improving a relationship at any age or stage.

CAN’T SHAKE IT?

You could be making your cold worse

The average American, after all, gets two to three colds a year, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Most colds last only three to five days, but you can still be congested or have a cough for up to two weeks. The trouble is, colds can linger longer or get worse as a result of lifestyle habits and behaviors, including those you might otherwise have thought were healthy. Have you made any of these mistakes?

Mistake #1: Not backing off your intensity at the gym.

Exercise can be a mental godsend when you’re sick, lifting your spirits at the very least. But don’t take this as permission to give it your all when you’re sick, or you could make yourself worse. If you have a fever, cough, chest congestion or upset stomach, hold off on all exercise until those symptoms resolve.

Mistake #2: Telling yourself you’re not sick.

If you’ve always subscribed to the mind-over-matter philosophy when it comes to recovering from colds, give it up. Pretending you’re not sick might not encourage you to dial back your activities, which means you could overexert yourself, thus making symptoms worse and delaying recovery.

Mistake #3: Skimping on sleep.

Sleep might sink to the bottom of your regular to-do list—the CDC reports that one in three Americans don’t get the sleep they need—but when you’re sick, sleep becomes even more critical. Inadequate sleep can reduce the function of the immune system and prolong recovery from colds. The problem is, cold symptoms like coughing and congestion can keep you awake when you’re trying to sleep. If that’s the case, try using over-the-counter medications to sleep better.

Mistake #4: Consuming alcohol.

Forget the myth that alcohol kills all germs, therefore it’s okay to indulge. When you’re under the weather, avoid all alcohol. Why? Because, alcohol directly suppresses your immune system and tends to be dehydrating, thus harming your immune system and prolonging your illness. Alcohol can also interfere with your sleep, which is a crucial part of recovery.

Mistake #5: Overusing decongestants.

Decongestants can certainly make you feel better, and even sleep better, which can shorten the course of your cold. Using a nasal decongestant for longer than one or two days, however, could spell trouble. When used beyond three days, experts say topical decongestant nasal sprays can make your congestion worse.

If your answer is “Having one card totally paid off,” then throw as much money as you can toward the card with the lowest balance first. If your answer is “Boosting my credit score,” then tackle the card with the highest utilization rate (that’s your balance divided by the card’s limit).

2. Ask your creditors for lower interest rates Often, a simple phone call to the issuer, is all it takes to get a reduced rate—provided that you have good credit (a score of 730 or higher) and you are a long-term customer who makes payments on time. You could get a percentage point

or two shaved off, which can add up to hundreds of dollars saved annually. One tip to try: If you’ve been offered a lower rate by a competitor, tell a customer service rep from your card issuer. There’s a chance they’ll match the offer.

3. Transfer your balance (cautiously) It’s tempting to move a balance from a card with a high interest rate to a card with a substantially lower one. And potentially that’s a smart move; you can save hundreds of dollars a year. But be careful. You should transfer a balance only if you’re committed to paying off the debt within an introductory low-interest-rate window and to making monthly payments

on time. Otherwise your rate could skyrocket, possibly ending up higher than the one you just got rid of.

4. Make two minimum payments each month.

Card issuers typically charge interest on a daily basis, so the sooner you make a payment, the faster your average daily balance is reduced, which translates into fewer dollars in interest that you ultimately pay. If you’re on a tight budget, go ahead and pay the minimum due each month, then try to make the same payment again two weeks later. Keep making a payment of the initial minimum-due amount twice a month until your debt is paid off.

Parenting resolutions for the New Year This year, it’s time to eliminate parenting guilt by making resolutions you can implement.

Give your children your best self by embracing these habits on a daily basis.

Be present

Commit to becoming a more mindful parent in 2020. Start by reducing distractions: lock your phone in a drawer until your kids are at school, check emails only at specific times and set your to-do list aside until they’re in bed. Give each one of your children your undivided attention for at least 10 minutes a day. Look them in the eye when they speak, listen carefully to what they’re saying and respond thoughtfully.

Manage screen time

Studies have found that too much screen time reduces brain connectivity in children and that smartphone addiction creates an imbalance in the brain chemistry of teens. Resolve to reduce your family’s screen time by a certain percentage this year.

Reduce yelling

We all yell at our kids sometimes, but we know deep down that it isn’t a positive parenting practice. Learn to interrupt the yelling cycle by using techniques such as S.T.O.P.: Say it out loud (I’m feeling frustrated), Turn around (away from your kids), Observe the situation (take some deep breaths and decide how to turn it around), and Praise (yourself for breaking the cycle).

Focus on the positives

Research shows that the brain tends to recall negative events more accurately than positive ones.

Although you can’t avoid scolding your children, you can balance it out by creating two positive interactions for every negative one. Positive exchanges can include a simple smile, hugs and kisses, praise for a job well done, reading a book together and going out for ice cream.

Lighten your load

Are you constantly running from one activity to the next and barking at your kids to hurry up? You’re not alone. We live in an overscheduled world where busyness is highly valued because we equate it with success. Resolve to schedule fewer after-school activities and social engagements this year.

Practice self-care

You’ll be a calmer and happier parent if you take care of yourself by getting enough sleep, exercise, healthy food and downtime. Write out a self-care plan that’s both realistic and effective when it comes to keeping you happy and sane. It might be three yoga sessions, two coffee dates with friends and only two candy bars per week.

GAME DAY SNACKS Try these tasty treats for the big day

Pull-Apart Garlic Bread Pizza Dip

INGREDIENTS 3 c. shredded mozzarella, divided 2 (8-oz.) blocks cream cheese, softened 1 c. ricotta 1/3 c. plus 2 Tbsp. freshly grated Parmesan, divided 1 Tbsp. Italian seasoning 1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes Kosher salt 3/4 c. pizza sauce 1 c. mini pepperoni 2 (16-oz.) cans refrigerated biscuits (such as Pillsbury Grands) 1/4 c. extra-virgin olive oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 Tbsp. freshly chopped parsley DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups mozzarella, cream cheese, ricotta, 1/3 cup Parmesan, Italian seasoning, and red pepper flakes.

Season with salt. Transfer mixture to a 9”-x-13” baking dish, then spread pizza sauce on top. Top with remaining 1 cup mozzarella and pepperoni. Halve biscuits and roll into balls, then place on top of dip. In a small bowl, whisk together oil, garlic, and parsley.

Brush on biscuits and sprinkle with remaining 2 tablespoons Parmesan. Bake until biscuits are golden and cheese is melty, about 45 minutes, then cover with aluminum foil and bake until biscuits are cooked through, another 15 to 20 minutes. Let cool 10 minutes before serving.

Trash Can Nachos Oven-Fried Pickles Maple Bacon Smokies

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. mini hot dogs, patted dry 8 slices bacon, cut into 3” strips 1/4 c. maple syrup 1/4 c. brown sugar 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350° and line a medium baking sheet with parchment paper. Pat mini hot dogs dry with paper towel and wrap with bacon. Place on baking sheet seam side down. In a medium bowl, combine maple syrup with brown sugar and cayenne pepper. Brush onto mini hot dogs and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until bacon is crisp. Serve.

INGREDIENTS 1 c. panko bread crumbs 1/4 c. freshly chopped dill 2 Tbsp. melted butter 1/2 tsp. garlic powder 1/4 tsp. cayenne pepper Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1/2 c. all-purpose flour 2 large eggs 1 c. pickle slices, patted dry with paper towels Ranch dressing, for dipping DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 450° and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. In a shallow bowl, stir together bread crumbs, dill, melted butter, garlic powder, and cayenne and season with salt and pepper.

Put flour in another shallow bowl.

In a third bowl, beat eggs. Working in batches, toss pickles in flour until lightly coated, then dip in eggs, then toss in panko mixture until fully coated. Place pickles on prepared baking sheet and bake until golden and crispy, about 15 minutes. Serve with ranch.

INGREDIENTS FOR PICO DE GALLO 2 small tomatoes, chopped 1/2 c. diced red onion 1 jalapeño, seeded and minced 1/4 c. freshly chopped cilantro 1 Tbsp. lime juice Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper FOR BEEF 1 Tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1 lb. ground beef Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1/2 tsp. paprika 1/2 tsp. Cholula® Original Hot Sauce FOR CHEESE SAUCE 2 Tbsp. butter 2 Tbsp. all-purpose flour 2 c. whole milk 1/2 tsp. Cholula® Original Hot Sauce 2 c. shredded cheddar Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper FOR ASSEMBLY 2 c. shredded cheddar 1 lb. sour cream 1 (12-oz.) bag thick tortilla chips 1 (15.5-oz.) can black beans, rinsed and drained Cholula® Original Hot Sauce, for drizzling DIRECTIONS

Jalapeño Popper Crisps

INGREDIENTS 4 slices bacon 1 c. finely shredded Parmesan 1/2 c. shredded cheddar (preferably aged) 1 jalapeño, sliced thinly Freshly ground black pepper DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 375º. In a large nonstick skillet over medium heat, cook bacon until crispy, 8 minutes. Drain on a paper towellined plate, then chop. Spoon about 1 tablespoon of Parmesan into a small mound on a large baking sheet and top with about tablespoon of cheddar cheese.

Carefully pat down cheeses and top with a jalapeño slice. Sprinkle with bacon and season with pepper.

Repeat with remaining ingredients.

Bake until crispy and golden, about 12 minutes. Let cool slightly on pan before serving.

Salsa Verde Ranch Taquitos INGREDIENTS Cooking spray 12 small corn tortillas 2 c. shredded cheddar 2 c. salsa verde ranch chicken dip 1/3 c. freshly chopped cilantro DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 425° and grease a small baking sheet with cooking spray. Place tortillas on a small, microwave-safe plate. Cover with a damp paper towel, and microwave until tortillas are warmed through.

Keep warm.

Assemble taquitos: Spread about 3 tablespoons dip on one side of tortilla, sprinkle with cheese and cilantro. Roll up tightly and place on prepared baking sheet, seam side down. Bake until golden and cheese and is melty, 10 minutes.

MAKE THE PICO DE GALLO In a medium bowl, combine tomatoes, onion, jalapeño, cilantro, and lime juice. Season with salt and pepper.

MAKE THE BEEF In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and season with salt and pepper. Cook, stirring occasionally, until no pink remains, about 6 minutes. Drain excess fat, then add garlic, cumin, paprika, and Cholula hot sauce, and cook, stirring until fragrant, about 1 minute more.

Remove from the heat and set aside.

MAKE THE CHEESE SAUCE In a medium pot, melt butter over medium heat. Add flour and stir, 1 minute. Slowly whisk in milk, then continue to cook over medium, stirring constantly until thickened, about 6 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in Cholula hot sauce and cheddar. Season with salt and pepper.

ASSEMBLE THE NACHOS Set aside ½ cup of the pico de gallo, ½ cup of the shredded cheese, and ½ cup of the sour cream, for garnishing the nachos. In the bottom of a 110-oz. tin can, spread a thin layer of cheese sauce. Using a ¼ of the tortilla chips, make an even layer of chips over the cheese sauce. Top with 1/3 of the remaining cheese sauce, 1/3 of the cooked beef,1/3 of the black beans, 1/3 of the shredded cheese, 1/3 of the remaining pico de gallo, and 1/3 of the remaining sour cream. Drizzle with Cholula. Repeat layering the chips, cheese sauce, beef, black beans, remaining shredded cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, and Cholula two more times. Layer the remaining nacho chips on top. Place a dinner plate on top of the can and carefully flip over and slowly remove the tin from the nachos, leaving a nacho tower behind. Top the nacho tower with the reserved sour cream, pico de gallo, and shredded cheese.

Drizzle with Cholula before serving.

THINGS TO SAY When your teen is stressed out

1. I love you. The first thing because it’s the most important thing. I’m saying it even though I hope you know it’s true without being told. I’m saying it even though you might give me an eye-roll in return.

2. Take a deep breath. Slow breath in, slow breath out. Repeat. You might have to fight yourself to do what feels like nothing, when what you want to do is something.

But the point is to hit the pause button and reset your racing mind and emotions so you can fix the problem, not feed it.

3. I’m already proud of you. How I feel about you does not hinge on this test, this paper, this project, or this game. Entirely apart from any of this, I’m proud of who you are and of who you’re becoming. I’m proud of what you’ve already done and of the effort you’ve put into the doing.

5. How you feel at this moment is not how you’re going to feel forever.

You’re not going to be stuck here for the rest of your life. This is not your new normal. HERE’S A TIP

Be sure to eat a hearty breakfast before heading out to the airport. Pack a piece or two of whole fruit or a portion of nuts for snacking, and bring an empty water bottle so that you can make it through airport security and fill the bottle when you are at the gate. Being hydrated and having healthy snacks will make your travel experience more pleasant.

A potato peeler plus a bar of chocolate makes for a very fancy garnish for cake tops or even for hot drinks.

Potatoes can be boiled whole, then plunged into icy water briefly when cooked. The skins should slip right off. No need to spend all that time peeling potatoes!

According to waste management company Republic Services, approximately 30% of what Americans place in their curbside recycling bins does not belong there, including greasy pizza boxes, wet cardboard, plastic bags, food-tainted materials, and even bowling balls and garden hoses. Meanwhile, only one in four plastic bottles is recycled.

Paper lunch bags make excellent receptacle for cat litter waste. They are much more environmentally friendly than plastic bags, and can be folded down and placed directly into an outside trash can. The bags are easily stored near the litter box, because they lay flat.

Do you need to go to a fancy liquor store for simple syrup? No way!

Simply mix equal parts sugar and water, bring to a simmer and store in the fridge in a covered jar. Use in drink recipes and to sweeten iced tea.

Touchdown Punch

INGREDIENTS 1 L Sprite 4 c. seltzer 1 (750-ml.) bottle prosecco 1 c. vodka 1/4 c. blue curaçao 1 lemon, thinly sliced 3 c. ice DIRECTIONS Combine all ingredients in a punch bowl. Stir to combine and serve into glasses.

Apple Cider Mojitos

INGREDIENTS Ice Juice of 1 lemon 1/2 c. gold rum apple cider Mint, for garnish Apple slices, for garnish Cinnamon sticks, for garnish DIRECTIONS Fill 2 glasses with ice. Add the juice of half a lemon to each glass.

Divide the rum between the two glasses, then fill 3/4 of the way full with apple cider. Top each with a splash of seltzer and stir to combine.

Garnish with mint, thyme, and a slice of apple.

Brunch Rum Punch

INGREDIENTS 1/2 c. light rum 1/2 c. dark rum 3/4 c. fresh orange juice 3/4 c. pineapple juice 3/4 c. cranberry juice 2 tbsp. grenadine Ice Orange slice Seltzer, optional DIRECTIONS Place the rums, orange juice, pineapple juice, cranberry juice, and grenadine in a large pitcher and stir together. Fill four tall glasses with ice and divide the rum mixture among them. Garnish each glass with an orange slice and serve immediately.

Prosecco Slushies

INGREDIENTS 2 c. prosecco 1 1/2 c. chopped strawberries 1/4 c. lime juice 1/2 c. vodka ice Mint, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a blender, combine prosecco, strawberries, lime juice, and vodka. Fill the blender about halfway full with ice, then blend until the mixture is slushy. Divide slushies between glasses and garnish with mint.

Moscato Lemonade

INGREDIENTS 1 (750-mL) bottle pink moscato 6 c. strawberry lemonade 1/2 c. vodka Lemon slices DIRECTIONS In a large pitcher, stir together moscato, lemonade, and vodka.

Garnish with lemon slices. Serve over ice.

Boozy Sherbet Punch

INGREDIENTS 3 c. ice 1 (2-L) bottle lemon-lime soda 1 (750-mL) bottle prosecco 1/4 c. grenadine 2 c. pink lemonade 1 c. pineapple juice 2 c. chopped pineapple 1 c. sliced strawberries 1 qt. sherbet 1 c. maraschino cherries DIRECTIONS To a large punch bowl, add ice. Add lemon-lime soda, prosecco, grenadine, pink lemonade, pineapple juice, strawberries, and pineapples. Top with sherbet and maraschino cherries and serve immediately.

Blue Moon Jell-O Shots

INGREDIENTS 2 3-oz. packages orange Jell-O 2 c. boiling water 1 c. Blue Moon beer 1 c. vodka 1 c. cool whip 1 orange, cut into tiny slices, for garnish DIRECTIONS In a large heatproof glass bowl or measuring cup, empty Jell-o powder. Pour over boiling water and whisk until Jell-O is completely dissolved, 2 minutes. Stir in Blue Moon and vodka.

Pour mixture into plastic shot cups and refrigerate until firm, 2 to 3 hours. Top with Cool Whip for “foam” and garnish with a tiny orange slice.

Piña Colada Sangria

INGREDIENTS 1 750-ml. bottle white wine, such as sauvignon blanc 2 c. pineapple juice 1 c. seltzer 1 c. chopped pineapple 1/2 c. coconut rum 1/4 c. maraschino cherries DIRECTIONS In a pitcher combine white wine, pineapple juice, seltzer, pineapple, coconut rum, and maraschino cherries. Refrigerate until chilled.
